Ex-Blues midfielder questions Chelsea’s title credentials
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has cast doubt on the club’s chances of winning either the Premier League or the UEFA Champions League this season, insisting the squad remains “too exposed” to compete with Europe’s elite.
Chelsea displayed a highly impressive performance at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, edging Benfica 1–0 in their second Champions League group fixture.
What Mikel said
The Nigerian, who won both competitions during his time at Stamford Bridge, said on The Obi One Podcast.
“We can’t win the Premier League or Champions League; we are way too exposed,” the former Super Eagles captain said.
He added, “You can’t play with the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Dembélé, they would crush us.”
Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup after defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the final. They are competing in the Champions League this season and currently sit 8th in the Premier League after six games.
