America’s most beloved animated family is making a return to cinemas. After a two-decade break, The Simpsons are gearing up for a new big-screen adventure.

Disney’s 20th Century Studios has confirmed that a sequel to The Simpsons Movie is in development and will hit theaters on July 23, 2027, exactly 20 years after the first film premiered. The long-awaited project takes over the release date of an untitled Marvel movie, which has now been removed from Disney’s schedule. As a result, there will be a rare yearlong gap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, between Avengers: Doomsday (Dec. 18, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (Dec. 17, 2027).

Plot details for the Simpsons sequel are still under wraps, but Disney stoked fan excitement by sharing a teaser poster on Instagram. Featuring a single pink donut and the tagline “Homer’s coming back for seconds,” the image hints at more classic chaos from Springfield’s favorite troublemaker.

Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons holds the record as the longest-running animated series and sitcom in television history. It’s currently renewed through its 40th season, set to air in 2028 and 2029. The show follows the iconic Simpson family bumbling dad Homer, patient mom Marge, mischievous Bart, brainy Lisa, and pacifier-loving Maggie as they navigate life in the fictional town of Springfield.

The original Simpsons Movie, released in July 2007, was a massive hit, raking in $536 million worldwide on a $75 million budget. Directed by longtime series director David Silverman, the movie centered on a catastrophic eco-disaster caused by Homer that led the government to seal Springfield under a giant glass dome.

Talks of a sequel have been floating around for years, but this is the first time an official release date has been locked in.

According to showrunner Matt Selman, streaming has played a huge role in keeping the series culturally relevant and even bringing in new fans.

“Now instead of the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever,” Selman told Variety. “Being on Disney+ has been somewhat rejuvenating for us. Not that we realized we needed rejuvenation, but we appreciate it.”
