The NYC President, who recently won elections to head the apex youth body with the manifesto of youth empowerment as well as tackling the twin menace of unemployment and underemployment has begun his presidency with wide consultantions with critical stakeholders, central to achieving his mandate.

In his address at the occasion, Comrade Jethro Annum thanked the Comptroller General for the opportunity to interact with him on behalf of members of NYC, which is the only recognized body that has consistently represented the interests of Nigerian youth.

“We are here because, the Congress has over the years, continued to use the instruments of advocacy and diplomatic engagements to seek policy directions and actions that will favour Nigerian youth towards increasing their productivity and participation in economic activities to enhance their well-being.

“The Congress wishes to appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his daring, bold and unprecedented reforms that have seen a stable forex regime, provision of clean and sustainable energy for businesses to thrive, drastically decreasing food inflation rates, improved monetary outlook and a positively growing economy.

“These policies are already having positive multiplier effects on the economy and Nigerian youth. This gains have inspired hope in multitudes and reaffirmed the Presidents commitment to driving up the fortunes of the Nigerian people”, he stated.

The NYC President also commended the Comptroller General for his professionalism and urged him to ensure merit based recruitment which will carry all eligible Nigerian youth along regardless of their social and political affiliations.

According to him, “permit me to say the Congress recognizes you and the immense efforts at positioning the Federal Fire Service to become not just a professional organization that delivers on its mandate but a pride to the nation that has continued to gain the attention of young Nigerians.

“To further create more opportunities for Nigerian youth, we call on the federal government to strengthen service delivery at the grassroot and provide state of the art firefighting vehicles to the 774 Local Government Areas (LGA) across the nation to mitigate the risk of fire accidents with their attendant economic and material losses.

“The high turnout for the ongoing recruitment exercise validates this position as we have an unprecedented number of youth indicating interest to be part of the service at this material time. This is not unconnected with the professionalism that the service has demonstrated during your stewardship, and therefore, you deserve great commendation.

“Therefore, the Congress wishes to appeal that just as your tale is a tale of hardwork, dedication and reward for sacrifice to nation, the opportunity of the ongoing recruitment exercise should reflect these virtues, so that our young sons and daughters who seek to serve are given the opportunity to serve based on merit, as this would be the highest demonstration of a renewed hope to our youth.

“The Congress equally appreciates the partnership and support it enjoys from your office and your organization, be assured of our continued partnership with the Federal Fire Service in advocacy for the repeal of the old Fire Service Act and the enactment of a new Act that reflects the collective hopes and aspirations of our people for a world class Fire Service that not just delivers but surpasses its mandate. The Congress shall continue to reach out and partner on areas of interest that advance the interest of the service and the Congress”.

In his response, the Comptroller General, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi thanked the President of NYC and his delegation for the vote of confidence in his administration and pleaded to “partner with and work closely with youth bodies to ensure inclusion and youth empowerment in the Service and beyond”.
