Meghan Markle had a simple three-word instruction for how she should be addressed by an Invictus Games staff member, it has been claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex travelled to Canada in February for the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025. Scott Moore, the new CEO of the Invictus Games, was tasked with overseeing the organisation’s inaugural winter event. In the lead-up to the annual Games, Mr Moore shared his experience of meeting the couple, who sensationally stepped down from their royal duties in 2020.

He revealed that when he asked how to properly address them, he was told by the Duchess that a simple “Ma’am is fine”. Similarly, he was informed that addressing the Duke of Sussex as “Sir” would be appropriate.

He told the Daily Mail: “I did make sure to ask how I should be addressing them when they get here, and I was told the simple sir and ma’am is fine.” Typically, male members of the Royal Family are first greeted as “Your Royal Highness” followed by “Sir,” while female members are initially addressed as “Your Royal Highness” and then “Ma’am”, the Express reports.

Harry and Meghan have since ceased to be working members of the Royal Family. Despite this, they continue to hold their full royal titles, including their HRH styles. However, they have agreed not to use them for commercial purposes following their departure, in accordance with agreements made with the Royal Family.

This isn’t the first time reports have surfaced regarding how Harry and Meghan prefer to be addressed. Just a month prior to this year’s Invictus Games, Vanity Fair published an explosive cover story filled with various claims about the Sussexes. Among these allegations was the assertion that some of their former staff were asked to address them as sir or madam, despite the couple no longer being working royals.

The report claimed: “Some people familiar with the production of Archetypes and Harry’s book tour said they were instructed to address the couple as sir or ma’am, though the request was dropped in one instance after the person pushed back. (Other people say they were encouraged by Harry and Meghan to call them by their first names.)”.

It comes as Meghan compared herself to the former US president and former First Lady, Barack and Michelle Obama at an event this week. Speaking at Fortune’s annual Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington DC, she discussed her and Harry’s brand new deal with Netflix.

She told the audience: “My husband and I were in an overall deal with Netflix, and then not just similar to Higher Ground in the Obamas’ deal, once that had come to its term, the extension of it, which was such an incredible sign of the strength of our partnership, was now being in a first look deal.

“Which is also exciting, because it gives us flexibility to go to our partners first, and then at the same time, to be able to shop content that might not be the right fit for Netflix, but has a home somewhere else.”
