Relationships can be complicated enough on their own, but when money enters the picture, things often get messier.
For one woman on Reddit, a recurring financial request from her boyfriend has her questioning not just her generosity, but the dynamics of their entire relationship.
In a post, she explained that her boyfriend owes the IRS around $1,650 in taxes, which were originally due in March but delayed thanks to an extension until mid-October since he “couldn’t afford it.”
Recently, he asked to borrow the full amount from her, which might initially sound like a one-time emergency, but it’s far from the first financial favor he’s asked for.

“I have let him borrow money for his rent before 4 months ago and I have yet to see that money and promised to pay back, but hasn’t,” she explained. On top of that, when they go out together, she’s often the one footing the bill.
What makes the situation more difficult is the imbalance in their financial lifestyles. She described herself as someone who is “fortunate to have a well paying job and fair savings,” while her boyfriend “is barely making the minimum wage at his job” and doesn’t seem inclined to change that.
“All he likes to do is spend,” she noted, despite her repeated reminders that he needs to save in order to pay off his looming taxes.
“I am very generous when it comes to money but when he asked today again, I told him no,” she wrote.
Now her boyfriend is calling her a “mean person” and claiming she doesn’t care about him, even going as far as saying “he will end up in jail if he doesn’t pay up.”
After denying his request and putting her foot down, her boyfriend is now giving her the cold shoulder. “He has been acting pretty dry with me this morning now,” she revealed.

Reddit users ran to the comments, questioning why the original poster is still in this relationship.
“You have to understand that your relationship can’t last,” one user wrote. “Financial issues are one of the biggest reasons that couples break up. Being on different pages when it comes to your life philosophy around budgeting and money does not work.”
Another warned her about the high possibility of getting used by her boyfriend: “Don’t let it happen to you!! Keep your hard earned money and demand better!”
