The halls of power are buzzing with a story far more dramatic than any official statement. While the Nigerian military calmly announced the detention of sixteen senior officers—ranging from Captains all the way up to a Brigadier-General—claiming their arrest was simply due to “indiscipline” and failing promotion exams, top-tier intelligence sources are singing a very different tune. Forget the boring talk of “career stagnation.” Insiders claim the real reason these high-ranking officers were snatched up from their homes across the country is a chilling plot: they were allegedly planning a full-blown coup d’état to overthrow President Bola Tinubu and install a military regime.

A highly-placed official within the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) spilled the tea, confirming the official military statement was just “diplomatic” cover. “They have started doing secret meetings on how to overthrow the President and other top government officials,” the source revealed. Their alleged plan? To step in and take over from “selfish politicians.”

But it doesn’t stop there. Another source suggests this alleged plot is the real reason the grand October 1st Independence Day parade was abruptly cancelled. Intelligence reports supposedly showed the officers planned to use the military parade as their stage, intending to shoot the President and other top politicians during the event! The National Security Adviser and service chiefs reportedly intervened, pushing for the cancellation to thwart the deadly scheme, while the military’s public statement about promotions was just a quick effort to “douse tension.” Right now, these officers are reportedly still locked up in a DIA facility. It seems the Nigerian military’s long history of coups, which has seen five successful takeovers since 1960, is casting a very long shadow over the current administration.
