Experts have urged people with a smelly fridge to carry out some crucial checks before they reach out for help. If you open your fridge and notice a horrible odour, experts at Which? have said first of all, double check it’s definitely coming from where you think it is.
Which? suggests you “look around for a different culprit as it could be down to “blocked drains, the food-waste bin or a forgotten and rotten banana at the bottom of the fruit bowl” – and they could “all be suspects.” The reason for bad spells could that that you’re doing it all wrong.

The experts explained: “Strong-smelling food could be the issue, so make sure you’re storing your food properly in sealed containers.”
Which? revealed exactly where food should go. It suggests that because “the upper shelves in a fridge are warmer than those at the bottom” it is wise to put items in the right place by temperature.
They suggest: “Meat and fish should be on the colder bottom shelf, cooked food and cream cakes can go up top, while dairy and eggs will fare best in the middle of the fridge.”
If you are not sure where your items go, you can check exactly where to place things through an interactive website. Just visit the Food Standards website, click on an item and place it where you think it should go and it will tell you whether you are right or wrong.
Once you’ve checked for the obvious – we’re talking spilled milk and food – then you will next want to check its drip tray which is located behind the fridge. You should also check the condensation drain pipe that runs down the back of your fridge as these can easily become full of dirt.

Check to see if your has a chemical smell and if so, and your fridge has a water dispenser, you may want to clean it out. The experts stated that this could solve the issue.
All you need to do is ensure that it’s not old or clogged as if so, it could need replacing. The experts have urged people to check the user manual to see how to change the filter.
