Besiktas manager Sergen Yalcın has explained his decision to appoint Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as the club’s new vice-captain.
Besiktas boss Yalcın confirmed that Turkish midfielder Orkun Kokcu will serve as the team’s first captain, while Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was chosen as the deputy to replace goalkeeper Mert Günok and veteran Necip Uysal.
The manager explained the reasoning behind removing the previous vice-captain: “Necip and Mert are already the oldest in the team,” Yalçın revealed, as reported by Fotomac.

“Having a goalkeeper as captain is a bit problematic. Mert is a goalkeeper, and he gets booked when he goes out of bounds. We decided to develop the captains from within.”

Ndidi, who joined the Turkish giants this summer after eight years at Leicester City, has quickly become an integral part of the Besiktas squad.
The Nigerian international has impressed with his tireless work rate, defensive awareness, and ability to dictate play in midfield.
In the Turkish top flight, the 28-year-old has averaged 1.4 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, and 2.8 clearances per game.
Having previously worn the captain’s armband with the Super Eagles and at Leicester City, Ndidi is no stranger to leadership responsibilities.
Ndidi and Besiktas will look to turn things around when they face Konyaspor this weekend, after losing their last league match 2-1 to Genclerbirligi at home.
