A college golfer died last week after being struck by a car, leaving the school’s campus in mourning.
Sydney Barnes, a junior biology student at Millersville University, a DII school in southeastern Pennsylvania, died on Monday, October 13, as a result of traumatic brain injuries sustained in the horrific accident.
Barnes was rushed to hospital with critical injuries after being hit by the driver of a vehicle in Franklin County, PA, before succumbing to her injuries a week later.
Greencastle Borough Police Department announced on Thursday that no charges will be filed in connection with the accident. Police said that they had conducted a ‘thorough investigation’ into the incident, involving Pennsylvania State Police and other first responder agencies.
‘The Greencastle Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Barnes during this difficult time,’ the news release said.
No further details about the tragic incident have been released.

In her honor, The Sydney Hudson Barnes Memorial Scholarship has been launched. The fund is administered by the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Greencastle-Antrim Education Foundation and donations can be made at this link.
‘Sydney’s greatest academic and professional goal was to serve others through a career in the medical field,’ a statement provided by her brother, Nicholas, read.
‘Tragically, that dream will remain unfulfilled as originally expected.
‘But this scholarship bearing Sydney’s name-is offered in the prayerful hope that it will nurture scholars whose pursuit of knowledge and dedication to service reflect Sydney’s spirit and her noble aspiration to heal through medicine.
‘Sydney has already touched countless lives, and through this scholarship, her light will continue to shine for generations to come.’
Millersville University, where Barnes was a valued member of the women’s golf team, described her as ‘an exceptional student, a dedicated teammate, and a friend to many.’
‘Millersville Athletics mourns the loss of Sydney Barnes, who was a light in our community,’ a statement from the school’s athletics department read on social media.
‘She played the game of golf and lived life with a smile and joy that was infectious. She will be greatly missed. We extend our most sincere prayers and thoughts to her family and friends.’

Barnes recorded six top-25 finishes in the 10 events she competed in last season. In the team’s lineup for six events, contributing to Millersville’s first-place finishes in the MU Spring Invitational and Husky Fall Invitational
‘Sydney had a unique and fierce mental game that rose above any challenge she faced,’ assistant coach Sharon Barley told WGAL.
‘She would often ask me to ‘walk with her’ to help her and lighten the intensity with laughter during tournament play. She truly was a great scholar, athlete, and person.’
Barnes was named Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete.
She even recorded the first hole-in-one in the history of the program during her freshman year in 2023.
