The urgent need to restructure Nigeria’s policing system and enhance its capacity to manage internal security challenges without relying heavily on the military was highlighted during the screening of service chiefs in Abuja today.

Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, the former Chief of Army Staff and now Chief of Defence Staff designate, stressed this point while responding to questions from Senators.

He warned that ongoing battles against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry are stretching the military too thin, which could undermine their operational effectiveness.

He urged a collective approach to security, calling for the provision of modern warfare equipment to strengthen Nigeria’s security framework. Lt. Gen.

Oluyede emphasized that lasting peace and stability require a close collaboration between civilian security forces and the military.

Welcoming the nominees, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the screening as a constitutional mandate to ensure that only competent and patriotic officers are entrusted with the nation’s security.

He highlighted the exercise as vital to the Senate’s oversight role, aimed at enforcing discipline and professionalism within the armed forces.

The screening also included other service chiefs: Chief of Army Staff Major-General Waheedi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke; and Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Idi Abbas

The Senate looks forward to a productive dialogue to reinforce Nigeria’s security system.
