There has been renewed outrage on social media as Nigerians call for #JusticeForOchanya, the 13-year-old girl who died after allegedly suffering years of sexual abuse in Benue State.
Ochanya, who dreamed of becoming a medical doctor, was reportedly sent to live with relatives in Makurdi for better educational opportunities. However, investigations revealed that she was allegedly assaulted repeatedly by her guardian, a university lecturer, and his son over several years.
The case sparked national attention in 2018 when her death from related health complications was confirmed, leading to widespread condemnation and protests from civil society and human rights groups.
Advocacy organizations have since urged authorities to ensure full prosecution of the suspects and stronger legal protections for minors against sexual violence.
On social media, Nigerians have revived the hashtag #JusticeForOchanya, calling on law enforcement and the judiciary to ensure accountability and justice for the late teenager.
