Two men have been arrested after multiple people were stabbed on a train in eastern England, police in the United Kingdom said Saturday night.
“We are currently responding to an incident on a train to Huntingdon where multiple people have been stabbed,” British Transport Police said on X.
Cambridgeshire police said in a separate post on X that two men have been arrested.
In a statement, Cambridgeshire Constabulary said officers had received calls just before 8 p.m. “with reports that multiple people had been stabbed on a train.”
“Armed officers attended and the train was stopped at Huntingdon… A number of people have been taken to hospital,” police said.
PM Keir Starmer says train incident ‘appalling’ and ‘deeply concerning’
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the incident was “deeply concerning” and that his thoughts were with those affected in a post on X. He also thanked emergency services for their response.
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she was “deeply saddened to hear about the stabbings” and that her “thoughts go out to all those affected.”
“Two suspects have been immediately arrested and taken into custody,” she said in a post on X. She asked people to avoid speculation at an early stage.
Critical care teams mount ‘large-scale’ response to situation
The East of England Ambulance Service, responsible for urgent medical response for people in the region, said in a post to X they mobilized a “large-scale response to Huntingdon Railway Station which included numerous ambulances, tactical commanders, our Hazardous Area Response Team.”
Critical care teams including the East Anglian Air Ambulance and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were also at the scene.
“We can confirm we have transported multiple patients to hospital.”
