Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo is confident that Nigeria can defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
She claimed that rivals like South Africa and Morocco will not stand in their way of a record-extending 11th continental championship in 2026.
The reigning champions secured their spot in the upcoming tournament, to be hosted by Morocco, with a 3-1 aggregate victory over neighbouring Benin Republic.
Okoronkwo played a pivotal role in the qualifiers, scoring in the 2-0 first-leg win in Cotonou and providing a crucial assist in the 1-1 return leg in Abeokuta.

While other opponents, including hosts Morocco, will be vying for the trophy, the AFC Toronto star believes the Super Falcons have what it takes to remain Africa’s top team.

Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sports Tonight” after qualification was confirmed, Okoronkwo left no doubt about the team’s ambitions.
“Yes. With Nigeria, everything is possible for sure,” she stated. “We’re not going there to not want to win or just go there for vibes. We want to win the 11th [WAFCON title] for sure.”
Okoronkwo was a key player in the Super Falcons’ 2025 WAFCON final victory, where they defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in Rabat.
Her performance earned her the Player of the Match award and a nomination for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year alongside team captain Rasheedat Ajibade.
The Super Falcons are the most decorated team in WAFCON history, having won ten of the thirteen tournaments held.
They also hold the distinction of being the only African nation to have qualified for every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
