NEED TO KNOW

  • A birthday party invite is rubbing one mom the wrong way
  • The mother explained on Mumsnet that another parent wants guests to put down a deposit in order to attend their child’s celebration
  • “My own mom would be in fits of laughter to be told someone was hosting a party and charging for food,” the woman said

A mother is in disbelief after being asked to pay for her child to attend another kid’s birthday party — but now she is wondering if this is normal.

In a post on the U.K.-based community forum Mumsnet, the woman said another parent is requiring guests to put down a deposit to attend the child’s celebration.

“They are having a party in a hall with a bouncy castle,” the mom wrote of the setup for the kids, who are about 5 years old.

She continued, “I have a text from the mom who invited us asking for a deposit of £5 [$6.67] for the pizza, and if my child has allergies, please send over the money for her own personalized small pizza.”

The woman said she thought it was a scam text at first, before realizing it was not.

“My own mom would be in fits of laughter to be told someone was hosting a party and charging for food,” the woman admitted.

She then asked fellow Mumsnet users, “Is this normal to charge for birthday food now? Seems very, very odd!”

One user responded to her question, “No, not normal. We bring a present, that’s enough. You throw the party you can afford!”

Another replied, “If you can’t pay for the party, don’t have a party.”

A third user added, “I hope they said they didn’t want gifts on the invite.”
