Newly appointed Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brigadier General Samila Uba, assumed office on Tuesday assumed office with a pledge to deepen transparency, enhance unity of purpose, and drive digital innovation across Nigeria’s defence communication system.
The new DDI took over from Brigadier General Tukur Gusau at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
He described his appointment as a call to higher service and renewed commitment to national security communication
The DDI noted that in an era of fast-paced information exchange and complex security dynamics, the Directorate of Defence Information must be proactive, adaptive, and strategic in shaping the narrative of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“In an era defined by rapid information exchange, evolving defence and security challenges, and the pervasive influence of digital platforms, strategic communication is not merely a tool—it is a force multiplier,” he said.
General Uba emphasised that the Directorate of Defence Information serves as the critical bridge between the Armed Forces, the media, and the Nigerian public, with the mandate to inform, educate, and inspire trust.
“Our mission is foundational to national cohesion and the morale of our gallant men and women in uniform,” he added.
Drawing inspiration from the words of former U.S. Secretary of State, General Colin Powell, who once said “Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier,” the DDI affirmed his resolve to embody optimism and professionalism in all defence communications.
He outlined four key strategic priorities that would guide his leadership, Unity of Purpose, Timeliness and Transparency, Digital Innovation, and Effective Media Relations.
He explained that under Unity of Purpose, he would prioritise seamless coordination among the Public Relations and Information Directorates of the Army, Navy, and Air Force to ensure a unified national defence narrative.
“Our strength lies in a unified narrative that amplifies the collective achievements of our services while respecting their unique identities,” he said, adding that this cooperation would extend to other security agencies as exemplified by the presence of Nigeria Police Spokesman, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, at the ceremony.
On Timeliness and Transparency, General Uba pledged to ensure that the public receives accurate and timely information, especially in crisis situations, through proactive communication and a dedicated rapid-response team to counter misinformation and speculative reporting.
Under Digital Innovation, he announced that the Directorate would leverage modern technology, including data analytics, social media, and multimedia storytelling, to connect with younger audiences and strengthen the digital footprint of the Armed Forces.
“The battlefield of perception is increasingly online. Our digital footprint must mirror the agility and precision of our Armed Forces,” he remarked.
Speaking on Media Relations, he assured journalists of sustained partnership, announcing plans to establish a quarterly media forum to promote dialogue, strengthen collaboration, and ensure balanced reporting in the national interest.
“To our colleagues and partners in the media, we view you as allies in the pursuit of truth. Together, we can counter divisive narratives and celebrate stories of valour and sacrifice,” he stated.
The new Director warned against the dangers of misinformation and propaganda, which he said could erode public trust in seconds. He vowed that under his leadership, the Directorate would not “cede ground” to adversaries seeking to distort the image of the military. “Through rigorous fact-checking, public education campaigns, and partnerships with the media and cybersecurity experts, we will fortify Nigeria’s defence information architecture,” he said.
General Uba expressed appreciation to his predecessor, Brigadier General Tukur Ismail Gusau, for his achievements during his tenure, describing him as a dedicated officer who laid a solid foundation for the Directorate. He commended the staff of the Directorate for their professionalism and urged them to sustain their loyalty and support as he assumes duty.
“I sincerely appreciate the Nigerian media for its invaluable partnership and professionalism over the years. My doors will always remain open for constructive engagement,” he assured.
In his valedictory remarks, the outgoing Director, Brigadier General Tukur Ismail Gusau, reflected on his tenure, expressing gratitude to the Armed Forces and media stakeholders for their support. He commended his successor, describing him as a seasoned professional with vast experience in strategic communication, and pledged his full support for a smooth transition.
The event was attended by senior military officers, staff of the Directorate, and media representatives.
