At least eight persons have been abducted after gunmen invaded Biresawa village in the Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State late Monday night.
The assailants were said to have stormed the area between 11 pm and midnight, moving from one village to another during the coordinated attack.
A resident who spoke with Daily Trust under anonymity confirmed that two men and six women were taken away.
“They came as usual, and from our findings so far, two males and six females were taken away by the bandits. Up till now, there is no news on their whereabouts,” he said.
A relative of some of the victims, Kabiru Usman, said the attackers gained entry through neighbouring Tsundu village.
“They came on foot, armed with guns. They kidnapped my wife, Umma; my 17-year-old daughter, Fati; my brother’s wife, and two other women,” Usman lamented.
He added that the villagers attempted to resist but were overpowered.
“We tried to stop them, but our weapons were no match for them as they were carrying guns,” he said.
Usman revealed that residents had contacted security agencies beforehand after receiving information that bandits were heading towards the area.
“Before the attack occurred, we got a report that they were heading towards us, and we notified the security agencies, including the police and military, ahead of time because they gave us their numbers and asked us to call if we got any information,” he stated.
Sources told Daily Trust that the bandits also attacked Sarmawa, Yan Chibi, and Gano villages in the same local government.
A resident of Yan Chibi said the attackers came in large numbers.
“About 50 bandits riding motorcycles came into our community, shooting in the air. We all ran for safety. Later, we discovered they had abducted some people, mostly women,” he said.
He added that over 10 people were kidnapped across the affected communities.
A vigilante source in the area confirmed that residents had earlier reported the movements of “strange faces.”
After the abductions, vigilantes and local volunteers attempted to pursue the attackers but lost track of them as they crossed into Katsina State.
Residents say fear has gripped the region following serial attacks in neighbouring Shanono and Bagwai LGAs.
The vigilante source added that many families had begun sleeping outside their homes at night to avoid being attacked unawares.
