The Edo State Government has stepped up its campaign against illegal drugs, arresting seven individuals in a series of coordinated raids across Uromi, Ubiaja, and Auchi in Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial Districts.
The suspects, three men, four women, including a breastfeeding mother, were presented to the public in Benin City by the Edo State Taskforce.
Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Hon. Festus Ebea, revealed that the arrests followed intelligence-led operations targeting known drug hotspots. He confirmed that various quantities of illicit substances were recovered, providing solid evidence of their involvement in selling and distributing hard drugs.
“This operation was carried out on November 26, 2025, in Esan North-East, Esan South-East, and Etsako West. Seven persons were arrested, including a breastfeeding mother. Our youths are increasingly being lured into drug abuse, which fuels deviant behaviour and criminal activities,” Hon. Ebea said.
The Commissioner emphasised that all evidence links the suspects to illegal drug trade, which has contributed to rising antisocial behaviour. He stated that the state government is committed to dismantling drug networks, restoring public safety, and protecting young people from the dangers of narcotics.
Hon. Ebea added that the suspects will be profiled and handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution. “This operation will be sustained. It is not a one-off effort. The Edo State Government will continue to smoke out drug dealers and criminals wherever they hide to ensure a peaceful and safe society,” he said.
The Commissioner reiterated Governor Monday Okpebholo’s directive to make Edo a drug-free state. “Narcotics destroy lives and endanger communities. The impact of this Taskforce will be far-reaching. We will take the fight to the doorsteps of both sellers and consumers,” he added.
CSP Michael Anetor, Chairman of the Edo State Taskforce, affirmed his team’s dedication to tackling drug-related crime and thanked the Commissioner for his support. He also issued a warning to others involved in the illicit drug trade, urging them to desist before the law catches up with them.
The Edo State Government confirmed that these operations will continue until every community in the state is secure, safe, and free from the scourge of illegal drugs.
