New curriculum: Senate summons Education Minister, moves to stop WAEC registration
The Senate, on Tuesday, mandated its Committee on Basic and Secondary Education to summon the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, and heads of other relevant agencies over what it described as the sudden implementation of a new curriculum and registration guideline issued by the West African Examinations Council, WAEC.
This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi (APC Kogi West), who warned that the move could cause widespread failure among students scheduled to sit for the 2026 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE).
Presenting the motion, Karimi highlighted an abrupt and “ill-prepared” policy change by the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC, adding that the new guideline requires all SS3 students nationwide to adopt a curriculum originally planned to take effect in two years for candidates currently in SS1 and scheduled to write WAEC in 2027–2028.
He noted that the shift had led to the removal of subjects such as Computer Studies, Civic Education, and other pre-existing courses from the WAEC syllabus for the May/June 2026 examination, despite students’ years of preparation. He warned that most students would now be left with only six examinable subjects instead of the required minimum of eight and maximum of nine.
The Senate, he said, must act in line with Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which places the welfare of citizens at the centre of governance, and Section 18, which mandates the government to ensure equal and adequate educational opportunities at all levels.
Contributing, Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC Edo North) condemned what he called a “culture of anarchism” in policy implementation. He faulted the introduction of a new curriculum without adequate teachers, laboratories, equipment, or proper notification to parents and schools.
“You cannot wake up overnight and say that in June students will be examined in a subject they have not been taught. Intentions are not enough. Proper homework must be done,” he said.
He urged the Senate to invite the Minister of Education and relevant agencies to provide evidence of preparedness before such a major policy shift is allowed.
Similarly, Senator Idiat Adebule (APC Lagos Central) noted that major educational decisions must pass through the National Council on Education, involving all state commissioners, and called for a wider investigation into the entire proposed curriculum review.
In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, ruled that the Minister of Education, heads of relevant education agencies, and the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education should meet to address the concerns raised.
Akpabio noted that the Senate had already adopted one of the prayers regarding the exclusion of current SS3 students but agreed that full engagement with the ministry was necessary before any final directive.
“These are very weighty issues,” he said. “We cannot risk mass failure in the 2026 WAEC examinations. The relevant committees should invite the Minister immediately and report back within two weeks.”

Malami Spends Night At EFCC HQ As Probe Of 46 Bank Accounts Intensifies
Former Attorney‑General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, spent Monday night at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as interrogations over a widening probe intensified, TheCable has learnt.
An associate of the ex‑minister told TheCable that Malami was invited for questioning on Monday but arrived late in the evening, forcing him to stay overnight to continue responding to investigators’ queries.
The investigation reportedly centres on 46 bank accounts allegedly linked to Malami, a major focus of the EFCC’s inquiry.
Following the extended interrogation, the former AGF is expected to report daily to the EFCC as the investigation continues.
Malami had earlier undergone questioning on November 29. Afterwards, he posted on 𝕏 that the session was successful and disclosed he had been scheduled for “further engagement” with investigators.
“The engagement was successful, and I am eventually released while on an appointment for further engagement as the truth relating to the fabricated allegations against me continues to unfold,” he said.
Malami dismissed the EFCC’s claims that he duplicated a recovery process allegedly completed by Swiss lawyer Enrico Monfrini before Malami assumed office in 2015.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Mohammed Doka, Malami described the EFCC’s claims as “baseless, illogical, and devoid of substance.”

Nigerian lawmakers summon aviation minister, others over exorbitant flight ticket increases
The Senate on Tuesday summoned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, along with heads of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), over the sudden and steep increase in domestic flight ticket prices.
The minister and heads of the agencies are expected to appear before lawmakers in a closed-door session on a date to be announced.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Buhari Abdulfatai.
While presenting his motion, Mr Abdulfatai lamented that airfares across Nigerian airlines had risen sharply due to the festive season, a development he said would force many Nigerians to forgo travel because of insecurity on the roads.
The senator, who represents Oyo North Senatorial District, said he had previously engaged airline operators on the issue, but the high fares persisted. He therefore urged the Senate to empower its aviation committee to intervene.
One-way airfares on some domestic routes have risen by as much as 150 per cent, with tickets costing at least N300,000. Before the festive period, domestic flight tickets averaged around N120,000, but prices have reportedly surged to as high as N400,000.
Given the worsening insecurity on major highways, many Nigerians prefer to travel by air, but the soaring cost of tickets is a major hindrance.
Debate
Contributing to the debate, Adamu Aliero (APC, Kebbi Central), described the fare hike as unacceptable in a country where the minimum wage is N70,000. He noted that a civil servant would have to save for up to six months to afford a one-way flight.
“The synopsis of the motion was given that the minimum wage for Nigeria is 70,000 Naira. It means a civil servant will have to save five months’ salary or even six months’ salary before they could afford a one-way ticket to Lagos,” he said.
Mr Aliero, a former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), questioned the rationale behind the sudden increase in air fares and insisted that the Senate must summon all stakeholders to explain the hike.
“Mr President, this is unaffordable, and there has not been a corresponding increase in aviation fares. There has not been a corresponding increase in the airport charges from either FAN, NCAA or Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. So we need to summon all the stakeholders and question them on why this hike is announced.
“And not only that, Mr. President, we need to halt this increase in order to save Nigerians from exploitation. Mr. President, it is normal for airlines at the end of the year to increase fares, but not as it is announced today. An increase of 10 to 15 per cent is understandable, but not an increase of over 200 per cent. So if we do that, honestly speaking, Mr. President, we are allowing exploitation of Nigerians,” he added.
Peter Nwebonyi (APC, Ebonyi North) also condemned the sharp increase, saying he attempted to book a flight from Abuja to Enugu and was shocked to discover that Air Peace Airline was charging N500,000 and Ibom Air, N460,000.

“Just this morning, I called my personal assistant to get a ticket for me for the 13th of December from Abuja to Enugu, and shockingly, Mr. President, the cost for a one-way ticket from Abuja to Enugu is N500,000 for Air Peace and N460,000 for Ibom Air. Mr. President, this is unheard of. This is over a 400 per cent increment at a go. We never had it this way,” he said.
Adeola Olamilekan (APC, Ogun West) called for a comprehensive engagement with all aviation stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the problem.
In his remarks, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, accused airlines of exploiting Nigerians.
“It is very clear that Nigerians are being exploited and people are taking advantage of Nigerians,” he said.
Mr Akpabio subsequently put the motion to a voice vote, and it received overwhelming support.
After taking the vote, the senate president said the planned meeting with the aviation minister and relevant agencies was necessary to address the abysmal fare increase and to prevent disruptions to travel during the Christmas period.

BREAKING: Gov Adeleke joins Accord Party
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has formally declared the Accord Party as his new political platform ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
The governor made the announcement at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Osogbo, on Tuesday, in the presence of national and state leaders of the party.
Adeleke revealed that he officially joined the Accord Party on November 6, 2025, following weeks of consultations with stakeholders and opinion leaders across the state.
A statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, quoted the governor as saying stakeholders in Osun were already aware of the reasons behind the political realignment.
Adeleke said his decision was driven by the party’s ideological alignment with his administration’s commitment to welfarism.
“We opted for the Accord Party because its mission of welfarism aligns with our passionate focus on citizens’ and workers’ welfare,” he said.
Welcoming party leaders to the Government House, the governor emphasized the need for unity as preparations intensify for the 2026 governorship race.
“We are united in progress and good intentions for the good people of Osun State and Nigeria at large,” he stated.
He urged members to maintain cohesion and work collectively toward victory, stressing the need for inclusive leadership that accommodates the interests of all groups.
Speaking on his experience since joining the Accord Party, Adeleke said he had been encouraged by the party’s philosophy.
“The focus on people’s welfare should always be at the heart of public leadership. The primary essence of government is the welfare and well-being of the people,” he noted.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving the lives of residents through policies and programmes centred on citizen welfare.
He also presented the Accord Party as the new political vehicle for the state, calling on residents across all zones, Osun West, Osun East, and Osun Central, to rally behind the platform.

North-Central APC Forum hails Al-Makura’s appointment as Renewed Hope zonal coordinator
The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has described the appointment of former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, as the Renewed Hope Coordinator for the region by President Bola Tinubu as strategic and well-deserved.
President Tinubu recently named six zonal coordinators to drive the activities of the Renewed Hope Initiative Committees across the country.
The appointees, who will work with Renewed Hope Ambassador and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, are Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa (South-South), Isah Yuguda (North-East), Aminu Bello Masari (North-West), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim (South-East), Oladipupo Oyinbade (South-West), and Al-Makura (North-Central).
The coordinators are expected to lead grassroots engagements, mobilisation efforts, and socio-economic interventions in line with the administration’s national renewal agenda.
In a statement by its Chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, the North-Central APC Forum said Al-Makura has the competence, experience, and party credibility to effectively prosecute the mandate.
While commending President Tinubu for appointing “a capable and highly acceptable personality” and pledging its full cooperation, the Forum emphasized that Al-Makura’s appointment will strengthen its earlier pledge to mobilise six million votes for Tinubu in the 2027 election.
The Forum highlighted Al-Makura’s longstanding contributions to the APC, recalling that he was the only governor from the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) during the merger that birthed the APC in 2013, making him one of its founding pillars.
Tracing his political background to his days as Youth Leader of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in Plateau State in 1979 to buttress his political sagacity and justify President Tinubu’s choice, the Forum noted, “Mr President could not have made a better choice, and we hereby congratulate Senator Tanko Al-Makura on this well-deserved appointment.
“Senator Al-Makura was the only governor in the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC bloc, during the merger talks that resulted in the birth of the APC, making him one of the founders of the party.
“He is a two-term governor with clout and experience, and both former and sitting governors see him as one of their own. As a former senator, he is regarded as part and parcel of the legislature.
“He was among the chairmanship aspirants who accepted without grudges the consensus option that threw up Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman during the APC National Convention in 2022. His loyalty to the APC and Mr. President is not in doubt.
“He has discharged critical party assignments in the country, which gave him firsthand and intrinsic knowledge of the party nationally.”
The Forum listed assignments handled by Al-Makura to include chairing the Ekiti APC Governorship Primary that produced Kayode Fayemi in 2018, serving as Chairman of the North-East Reconciliation Committee the same year, and membership of the Bisi Akande-led National Reconciliation Committee in 2020.
The Forum also congratulated Governor Hope Uzodinma on his appointment as Director-General for Party Outreach, Engagement and Mobilisation, expressing confidence that both appointments will strengthen grassroots acceptance of the Renewed Hope Agenda ahead of the 2027 polls.

PDP Failed to Protect Me – Fubara Explains Why He Defected to APC [VIDEO]
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has explained the reasons behind his decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the party.
He stated that PDP failed to protect him during his political battles.
Politics Nigeria earlier reported that Governor Fubara on Tuesday officially announced his defection at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
Speaking during the meeting, Fubara said his move to the APC was necessary because he could not continue giving “backyard support” to President Bola Tinubu while still in the PDP.
According to him, openly identifying with the President’s leadership was the only way to guarantee stability and development for Rivers State.
“PDP failed to protect me,” the governor declared. “We can’t support President Tinubu if we don’t fully identify with him, not just backyard support. Our decision this evening is that we are moving to the APC.”
Fubara added that his defection was in the best interest of the state, noting that governance requires alignment with the centre for effective collaboration.
The governor joins a growing list of political figures who have crossed over to the APC in recent months.
