A yet-to-be-disclosed number of persons are feared killed after unknown armed men launched a brazen attack near the Afor Market Junction in the Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

The gunmen invaded the area and immediately opened fire on unsuspecting community members, causing panic and chaos, with some victims fatally injured and others fleeing for safety. Eyewitness accounts suggest that several people, mostly youths, were killed during the violence.

One source told Punch that the sudden attack left the community shaken:

“The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people. Nobody knows the reason behind the attack; the attack has left our community shaken,”.

An eyewitness near the scene described the chaos: “It was chaos. The attackers came out of nowhere this evening in a commando-like fashion and started shooting indiscriminately”.

Community Leadership Condemns Attack

The President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, confirmed the tragic incident in a press statement on Sunday.

Chief Okoye condemned the violence and confirmed that the attack resulted in multiple casualties:

“This evening, I received with deep shock the tragic news of an attack at the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community. The incident resulted in multiple casualties, caused by unknown assailants who carried out this senseless act of violence,”.

He assured residents that relevant security agencies have been contacted and investigations have begun to uncover the perpetrators. The President General appealed to all residents to “remain calm, stay vigilant, and continue to cooperate with security operatives”.

As of the time of filing the reports, the Anambra State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

A social media post has stirred widespread discussion after a user on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that a Muslim man abandoned Islam and converted to Christianity because of his admiration for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The claim was made by an X user identified as Nikky Agnes, who shared the man’s alleged public declaration.

In her post, Agnes stated that the man credited Kanu’s courage, teachings and perceived truthfulness for his decision.

According to the viral post, the man reportedly said: “Because of Nnamdi Kanu, I am converting to Christianity. Because of him, I finally understand what it means to be a true human being. After Allah, Nnamdi Kanu comes first.”

He was also quoted as saying: “I have never in my life seen anyone who speaks the truth the way Nnamdi Kanu does — and still ends up in jail simply because he stood by what he believed about Biafra.”

The post further claimed that the man described Kanu’s warnings as fulfilled, stating: “Everything he warned Nigeria about is happening today. Every prophecy, every truth, every warning — it has all come to pass.”

Agnes added that the man hailed Kanu as “a voice of freedom” and “the greatest of his generation.”

The claim has generated strong reactions across social media, with many users questioning its authenticity, while others argued that it reflects Kanu’s enduring influence despite his prolonged detention.

The recent drop in petrol prices across Nigeria has been attributed to increased domestic refining by Dangote Refinery, a strengthening naira, and improved supply chain efficiency.

Oil marketers say these factors have helped ensure steady supply, subdued smuggling pressures, and brought competitive pricing into the downstream sector easing the burden on Nigerian consumers.

The Dangote Refinery has significantly altered the country’s petroleum product market since it began partial operations, with multiple price cuts recorded through 2025 and a fresh pledge to supply over 1.5 billion litres of petrol monthly beginning in December.

Marketers Credit Refinery Output and Naira Gains for Price Decline 

Speaking to Nairametrics, the Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chinedu Ukadike, confirmed that petrol prices are on a downward trend and attributed this to growing output from the refinery and gains in the naira’s value.

• “Yes, the prices are going down. It has to do with one, production increase by Dangote. Two, the value of dollar. So, you know now that the dollar is coming down. It’s getting better. The more the dollar goes down, the better,” Ukadike said.

Another marketer, Kingsley Smart, who manages a fuel distribution company in Abuja, explained that supply-side improvements have eliminated scarcity and stabilized the market.

• “The recent decrease in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) is primarily due to a combination of improved supply chain efficiencies. Previously, getting the products, especially at this time of the year, can be a bit challenging for independent marketers. But now, with government’s recent assurances that there will be enough supply, thankfully there is no panic buying,” he told Nairametrics.

He also highlighted how both NNPC and Dangote had reduced their depot prices in response to broader market dynamics, including a mild drop in international crude prices.

• “This may be as a result of the fact that there is improved domestic refining capacity now than before… All these and more put together make the price come down.” 

Dangote Refinery denies tariff reversal influence 

Dangote Refinery, for its part, has continued to adjust prices downward throughout the year.

In August 2025, petrol sold for around N850 per litre, later dropping to N820, and in November, the refinery further cut its gantry price to N828 and reduced coastal prices from N854 to N806 per litre.

However, reports that a government reversal of the 15% import tariff on petrol triggered these price cuts were flatly denied by the refinery.

In a November 17 report, the company stated that its pricing strategy was internally driven, based on production efficiency and competitive market positioning.

• “The reduction in our petrol price was not due to any change in import tariff,” the company clarified, calling it “a strategic decision to encourage domestic sourcing of refined products and create better market value.” 

This statement was also supported by actions on the ground, as independent marketers began adjusting pump prices to match and in some cases, undercut Dangote’s pricing.

1.5 Billion Litres Pledge to Begin December 

Reinforcing its commitment to national fuel sufficiency, the Dangote Group on December 1 pledged to supply 1.5 billion litres of petrol monthly from its Lagos-based refinery.

This move, announced by company management, is part of efforts to deepen local production and wean Nigeria off fuel imports permanently.

The development followed earlier expressions of full government support, including the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) October endorsement of the refinery’s scale-up to 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd) — aimed at meeting local and regional demand.

Nigerian Petrol Still 55% Cheaper 

Despite the progress, Dangote has warned that petrol smuggling remains a threat to domestic fuel stability.

During a press briefing after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, Aliko Dangote acknowledged that regional price disparities continue to incentivize smuggling.

• “Prices are going down. The reason why prices have to go down is that we also have to compete with imports. But you know, luckily for us, now smuggling has reduced — not totally,” Dangote said.

• “There is still quite a lot of smuggling, because the price we have in Nigeria is about 55% of the price of our neighbouring countries. So, it doesn’t matter how you police the borders, people will still smuggle because there’s so much money to be made. They are selling at almost N1,500, N1,600 [per litre], but we’re selling at about N800 and something.” 

Cross-Border Trade to Deter Smuggling 

To tackle this, the Nigerian government has intensified border enforcement, especially in the northern axis.

According to IPMAN’s Ukadike, efforts like “Operation Whirlwind”, spearheaded by the National Security Adviser (NSA) and Nigeria Customs, have improved border security.

• “They are trying to do their best to ensure that we close the borders, with also massive military presence… especially at the northern axis,” he said.

Ukadike also pointed out that Dangote Refinery is already exporting products legally to neighbouring countries, offering a sustainable alternative to black-market trade.

• “Dangote is also exporting to neighbouring countries at very good rates. So, the essence of smuggling will also be defeated… if these products are being supplied to these African countries surrounding Nigeria.” 

He added that independent marketers now operate extended hours, even into late nights, reflecting greater supply confidence.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again acknowledged that he does not know his exact age.

Speaking on Sunday, Dec. 7, during the Toyin Falola Interviews themed “A Conversation with His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo,” he explained that he can only estimate his age based on his primary school classmates, six of whom are still alive, all now older than 90.

The interview panel included Professor Toyin Falola, Bishop of Sokoto Diocese Matthew Kukah, and former presidential candidate Professor Kingsley Moghalu.

Obasanjo noted that one of the reasons he established the presidential library was to preserve historical records and institutional memory.

He revealed that over three million materials have already been digitised, with an equal number still awaiting digitisation.

“The idea is when these materials are digitalised, people can have access to them. That is number one. As document preservation, we preserve the past, take note of the present and we want all these to inspire the future,” the former President of Nigeria said.

According to him, the library holds documents ranging from his primary and secondary school records to personal letters, including one he wrote to General Abacha after his son died in an accident, and another to his wife during his time in prison.

Despite this extensive documentation, he maintained that he still does not know his actual birth age, though his surviving classmates may hold clues.

“I don’t know my exact age but I could judge from those who were in school with me, I have given you an example of Olubara (Oba Jacob Olufemi Omolade, the Olubara of Ibara) who is still alive.

“I believe there are six of my classmates in secondary school that I know are still alive and none of them is less than 90 years of age. So I leave it to you to guess what my age could be.

“My school record card in primary school, I have been able to keep them and when I became President and I wanted to establish the library, they were available to be exhibited. My records in primary and secondary school and even the manuscripts of books that I have written, those that I wrote in prison and so on, even crops of maize that I planted when I was in prison, they are there and somehow I was able to keep them.

“Why the Presidential Library? I believe one of the things we don’t do too well in our society is that we don’t keep records too well, institutional memory is not what we do very well.”

Seamfix has entered into a new partnership with the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), operated by Afreximbank, to boost compliance, as well as build a governance platform that supports real-time cross-border payments across Africa.

The collaboration has, however, introduced PGATE, a compliance and transaction-governance layer built by Seamfix.

In a statement made available yesterday to THISDAY, by the Group Chief Executive Officer of Seamfix, Chimezie Emewulu,  the organisation said the platform links identity, payment behaviour, and regulatory checks in a single workflow, giving central banks, commercial banks, and other financial institutions a unified view of cross-border transactions and helps them enforce thresholds and spot suspicious activity without slowing payment flow.

It stated that PAPSS would champion the platform across its network, which includes central banks and financial institutions already sending and receiving payments in local currencies.

Emewulu said: “Seamfix will build, operate, and maintain PGATE under a vendor-financed model. The move supports PAPSS’s push to grow participation and expand services tied to its settlement infrastructure. It also responds to feedback from institutions that want stronger visibility on identity-linked payment behaviour as transaction volumes rise across the continent.

“Payments move fast across Africa, but trust must move with them. This partnership helps banks and regulators see what they need to see, at the moment they need to see it, without getting in the way of the transaction.”

He explained that PGATE draws on Seamfix’s Fixiam identity engine to link customer identities across institutions and detect fragmentation of transactions.

According to him, it offers pre-transaction screening, quota governance, consent management,, and audit trails that regulators can review after settlements occur.

“The partnership reflects broader efforts to simplify payments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), making it easier for businesses and individuals to send money across borders without complex currency conversions or delays.

“Seamfix and PAPSS will begin joint stakeholder sessions ahead of a planned proof-of-concept with selected central banks and commercial banks.”

The statement noted that PAPSS is a continental payment and settlement system created to enable real-time cross-border payments in local African currencies, adding that it is backed by Afreximbank and the African Union.

Also, it added thax Seamfix is a technology company that helps businesses and their customers globally to seamlessly create, verify,, and access trusted digital identities and services. “They build digital identity and compliance infrastructure used by banks, telecoms, and governments. Its products support identity verification, regulatory complianc,,e and secure digital onboarding at scale,” it stated.

Peter Obi’s political fraternity with opposition leaders in the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC) may be going awry at a time the coalition needs every hand on deck to strengthen its base ahead of the 2027 general election.

When the ADC launched in July, with former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, former Senate President David Mark, and former governors Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai as its leaders, the coalition signified a major shift in opposition politics.

Consolidating the euphoria, the former governor of Anambra State, with his Obidient followers, joined his fellow ex-governors in the coalition to promote the ADC as the best alternative to the existing opposition parties, including his ‘estranged’ Labour Party.

Given his unprecedented performance in the 2023 presidential election, and his Obidient community at his beck and call, Obi — despite his membership of the Labour Party — was the first ADC stakeholder to run narratives to declare his presidential ambition in the coalition.

Notwithstanding his campaign against the political ‘structure of criminality’ and Nigerians’ perception of the politicians who formed the leadership of the ADC, the former governor was hopeful that the party could serve as a platform to actualise his goal of birthing a new Nigeria.

Dismissing what any Nigerian may think about the founding fathers of the coalition, Obi, seeing himself in the party’s driver’s seat, said he needed all ADC members to support him in fixing the country, including party leaders Nigerians perceived as ‘old and failed’.

“You need the experience of those who have failed and those who have succeeded to move on, and I need everyone. It is a critical experience because they know what can fail a system and they know what was wrong with the system,” he said in a TV interview.

In the interview, Obi emphasised that his ‘membership’ of the ADC is to contest for president and not to run as Atiku’s running mate.

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” he declared.

To further strengthen his agenda, Obi urged the North to trust him and vote for him, promising that his government would address the ‘criminality’ in the region if he got the chance to lead the country through the ADC platform.

“The criminality we face in the North today, I will deal with it. If I am president, the North will celebrate me. I have an idea of the problem in the North,” he claimed.

Taking a step further to endear himself to the North and its political class, Obi, considering the North-South zoning arrangement, pushed a single-term narrative, promising that his government doesn’t need eight years to fix the country.

All the while, Obi remains a card-carrying LP member, weighing his chances with the ADC. However, while popularising their principal’s one-term agenda, the Obidient Movement launched the ‘Obi-or-Nothing’ narrative, pre-empting other ADC presidential hopefuls.

The Obi-or-Nothing agenda implies that the ADC leadership must hand its presidential ticket to the ex-governor unopposed, because he’s the ‘most qualified aspirant’ and, going by zoning arrangement, the 2023–2031 presidency belongs to the Southern region.

So, whoever must emerge as the party’s presidential candidate must be a southerner, and, in the estimation of the Obidient, the candidate must be their principal.

Obi enjoyed the momentum that came with the launch of the ADC as a viable opposition party. He seizes every opportunity to promote his ‘A new Nigeria is Possible’ slogan with every comment about the APC government, always going for the jugular of the ruling party, while presenting himself as the unblemished presidential aspirant no party should miss out on.

Interestingly, Obi has started singing a new song, which somehow unsettles the coalition. The current disposition of the ex-governor to the ADC gives an impression that there’s a handwriting on the wall of the party, and the inscription from the invisible hand is at odds with his agenda.

In his recent interview, the former governor of Anambra believes the ADC is faltering because its leadership has yet to settle some ‘unsigned agreements’.

“Today, we have what we can say are unsigned agreements about the presidency, unsigned agreements about rotation of offices, which is why if you say this person will come from here and this person will come from there, all those things need to be organised,” he stated.

This ‘unsigned agreement’ is what destroyed the PDP with Atiku at the centre of the crisis during the build-up to the 2023 poll.

Ahead of the 2027 election, Obi, who is still an LP member, is already letting the ADC leadership know that the ‘unsigned agreement’ must be respected; otherwise, things won’t remain ‘organised’ within the coalition.

Ostensibly, Obi’s remark did not go down well with the ADC. In an interview with a national daily, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s spokesperson, urged the presidential aspirant to ‘calm down’, saying the coalition had not reached the stage where zoning should be considered.

‘Zoning or no zoning is not on the table now. If that is the condition for Obi to join us, maybe he should wait till that time,” Abdullahi said.

Abdullahi also expressed disappointment with the choice of words Obi used to describe the ADC’s situation.

“It’s unfortunate that he used a word like unstable, because instability is not contingent on whether we are able to make certain decisions on zoning at this point, he said.

Part of Abdullahi’s response played into the narrative against Obi by Atiku supporters, who claimed he was desperate to secure the party’s ticket without working for it.

In one breath, the ADC mouthpiece asked Obi “to make up his mind if he wants to be part of the coalition or not,” and in another, he advised him to contribute more actively to party-building efforts, especially in Anambra, “like other leaders have done in their respective states.”

Obi may have done much by playing the opposition figure and making moves to endear himself to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 election, but, as far as the coalition is concerned, he hasn’t done well in preparing the South-East for the party.

As things stand, the ADC is largely non-existent in the South-East. This is evident in the last governorship election in Anambra State, where the ADC candidate came fifth with a paltry 8,208 votes.

Moreso, despite Obi’s open support for Donald Amamgbo in the Anambra bye-election, the ADC candidate was distant third with 2,889 votes.

In essence, the ADC is asking Obi to show workings for the party in his region and leave the party’s presidential candidacy to be determined at the primary.

Meanwhile, Atiku has officially joined the ADC. The former Vice has been holding meetings with political stakeholders in the North. He’s presenting the workings in a way that suggests the ADC presidential ticket has no one else to take it but Waziri himself.

As for Obi, his dilly-dally with the ADC and the LP will have to end at some point. Will he get the ADC ticket or run with Atiku? Will the ex-governor abandon his ‘elder brother’ once again and return to the LP? We’ll wait to see. The song may seem to have changed, but the party is not yet over.

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke have foiled a robbery attack, rescued abducted travellers, and recovered weapons in a series of coordinated operations across Taraba State.

The operations were disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Brigade’s Acting Spokesperson, Lt. Umar Muhammad.

According to the statement, the first incident occurred on 6 December 2025 in Manya, Takum Local Government Area, where soldiers responded to a distress call after armed robbers barricaded the Manya–Takum Road and began dispossessing travellers.

“The troops launched a rapid clearance operation, forcing the criminals to flee and abandon their weapons. An AK-47 rifle, an AK-47 magazine, and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition were recovered. Their intervention restored safety and movement along the busy route,” the statement read.

In a separate mission in Kufai Amadu, also in Takum LGA, troops rescued two abducted travellers following reports that four men from Bauchi State were kidnapped in Amadu Town while seeking directions on their way to Baissa in Kurmi LGA.

“Preliminary findings revealed that two of the victims, identified as Mr. Musa Danji and Mr. Yusuf, were taken away by their abductors towards New City. Coordinated search operations led to the rescue of two others, Mr. Yusuf Musa and Mr. Muhammed Umar, who escaped from captivity. Search efforts for the remaining victims are ongoing,” the Army stated, adding that efforts to apprehend the perpetrators have been intensified.

In another operation on 6 December, troops deployed in Iware, Ardo-Kola LGA, recovered arms and arrested two suspects during an intelligence-driven raid in Garin Sambo, Tau Village. Items seized include two pump-action guns, 13 cartridges, two motorcycles, and four mobile phones. Two suspects, identified as Baba Wura Sambo and Mallam Adamu Darda, were arrested over alleged illegal possession of arms.

The Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their professionalism and swift response. He reiterated the Brigade’s commitment to sustained, aggressive operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks across the state.

Uwa also assured residents of heightened security throughout the Yuletide season and urged the public to remain vigilant while providing credible information to support ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in Taraba.

Hong Kong recorded one of its lowest election turnouts on Sunday as anger over the city’s deadliest fire in decades overshadowed voting, despite officials extending voting hours and opening additional polling stations to boost participation.

The Legislative Council poll, limited to candidates approved as “patriots”  saw a turnout of 31.9%, slightly higher than the 30.2% recorded in 2021, the lowest since the territory returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

However, officials confirmed that the total number of ballots cast was lower than four years ago.

Under Hong Kong’s election system, only 20 of the 90 seats are directly elected. The remaining seats are filled by an election committee dominated by Beijing loyalists along with special interest and professional groups.

David Lok, chairman of the Election Commission, said the recent tragedy had altered the “social atmosphere, making it a very difficult election for us to organise.”

Security presence was heavy in Tai Po, near the mainland China border, where a fire on November 26 ripped through seven residential towers, killing at least 159 people. Police maintained a strong patrol around Wang Fuk Court, the site of the blaze.

Residents remain furious over the disaster, which took nearly two days to extinguish. Authorities say the rapid spread of the fire was fuelled by substandard building materials used during renovation works at the housing estate.

Hong Kong leader John Lee said his administration would work with the new legislature to “drive institutional reform” following the tragedy, as calls grow for greater accountability and stronger regulation of the construction sector.

In a bid to manage public outrage, authorities have launched both criminal and corruption investigations into the cause of the fire.

The city’s anti-corruption agency also announced the arrest of four men accused of using social media to urge people not to vote or to spoil their ballots. An arrest warrant was issued for a fifth suspect.

Inciting a vote boycott has been a criminal offense since electoral changes that sidelined pro-democracy voices. Many pro-democracy supporters who once made up the majority of voters have continued to avoid the polls.

Late Sunday, authorities removed flowers and offerings from a small memorial in a park near the burned-out buildings, a move observers say reflects official concern over rising public anger.

China’s national security office in Hong Kong has warned against any attempts to use the fire to “disrupt Hong Kong” and cautioned foreign media editors against spreading “false information” about the government’s handling of the disaster.

For many residents, trust remains low. A 79-year-old man who lives near the affected estate said he chose not to vote.

“I’m very upset by the great fire,” he said, declining to give his full name. “I won’t vote to support those pro-establishment politicians who failed us.”

Registered voters for the election dropped to 4.13 million, continuing a four-year decline from a peak of 4.47 million in 2021.

Two separate road accidents in Lagos claimed two lives and left two others injured in the early hours of Monday.

Eyewitnesses said the crashes occurred around midnight after the vehicles involved reportedly lost control, resulting in the fatalities and injuries.

Emergency responders evacuated the victims, with the injured taken to nearby hospitals and the bodies of the deceased recovered from the scenes.

Confirming the incidents, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, disclosed that the first crash happened on Otedola Bridge, inward Berger, while the second occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge, heading toward the UNILAG waterfront.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, explained that both deaths were from the Otedola Bridge accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Preliminary findings indicated that an unregistered vehicle carrying two occupants, including the driver, was speeding when it rammed into a moving, heavily loaded trailer at about 2:30 a.m.

He said the collision was fatal, killing both occupants instantly.

“In a disturbing development, the operator of the trailer involved fled the scene with the articulated vehicle,” Bakare-Oki said.

He noted that LASTMA’s Night-Gang Teams, deployed for midnight surveillance and traffic management, arrived promptly at the scene. The bodies were cleared from the main carriageway to prevent further accidents, and the wrecked vehicle was removed from the expressway.

Police officers from the Isheri Division provided security backup, while officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SHEMU, handled the formal evacuation of the remains.

In a second incident around 5:00 a.m. on the Third Mainland Bridge near the UNILAG waterfront, a collision involving an empty tanker and a pure-water distribution van (plate number SMK 67 XH) resulted in severe injuries to two people.

The Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, administered first aid before the victims were transported to a nearby medical facility.

Bakare-Oki added that despite the tragic incidents, LASTMA officers maintained steady traffic management on both corridors to protect motorists and avert further risks.

He also extended condolences to the families of the deceased, warning that excessive speeding and disregard for traffic regulations continue to claim innocent lives.

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to enforcing speed limits, stressing that compliance remains crucial to preventing needless tragedies.
