The President of the Ijesa Development Council, IDC, Supo Shadiya, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s refinery management and the broader petroleum sector.

Shadiya, who is an oil industry expert, spoke at the 50th edition of the Frontliners organised by the Osun State chapter of the League of Veteran Journalists, LVJ, on Wednesday in Osogbo.

Shadiya noted that all refineries in the country are government-owned and criticised the absence of effective maintenance culture within the sector.

He stressed that regular maintenance was essential for operational reliability and long-term efficiency.

According to him, inadequate attention to maintenance had contributed significantly to recurring breakdowns and the inability of the refineries to function optimally.

He added that improved practices would enhance productivity and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.

Shadiya also highlighted the impact of the Dangote Refinery, saying its commencement had led to a reduction in petroleum product prices and a decline in importation volumes across the country.

He stated that the prevailing issues in the sector were “closely linked to market dynamics. The current situation was a reflection of demand and supply forces at play.

“Good competition would have made it easier but we still need to recognise that Dangote seems to have the interest of the country at heart.”

The IDC president pointed to the foreign exchange situation as another challenge for the industry and explained that despite the positive developments brought by the Dangote Refinery, fluctuations in the dollar rate continued to influence operations and product pricing.

Shadiya commended Dangote for the significant contributions to petroleum distribution nationwide.

“Dollar aspect is also a challenge despite the fact that Dangote has done something very beautiful,” he stated.

He added that the refinery’s owner had invested in distribution channels, trucks and manpower to ensure products reached consumers across the country.

According to him, these moves had helped stabilise supply despite persistent industry hurdles.

Shadiya also alleged that the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, had placed considerable pressure on Dangote Refinery from the beginning, but maintained that the company had stayed committed to its distribution objectives.

He added that subsidy removal by President Bola Tinubu has been of immense benefit to Nigeria but its implementation has been the bane of the process.

“Subsidy removal was done in good faith but what has Nigeria done with it? The benefit from it is not trickling down to the people

The Federal Government has brought former Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah, and Gloria Odita, before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Maitama, Abuja, on charges related to alleged fraud, obtaining by false pretence, and criminal breach of trust.

Naija News reports that the charge sheet presented to Justice Hamza Muazu stated that in January 2014, Oduah and Odita allegedly conspired to obtain a total of ₦2,469,030,738.90 from the Federal Ministry of Aviation through Broad Waters Resources Nigeria Ltd and Global Offshore Marine Ltd under fraudulent claims.

The first count of the charge claims that the defendants agreed to secure the sum by falsely presenting it as payment for “Cost of Technical Supervision” and “Security Integrated and Logistics Support Services.”

The prosecution said the representation was false. This offence is linked to Sections 8(a) and 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud Act.

The second count alleged that on January 13, 2014, Oduah and Odita obtained N839,780,738.90 by claiming it was for “Cost of Technical Supervision.”

The third count stated that on February 12, 2014, the defendants obtained N1,629,250,000 from the ministry through Global Offshore Marine Ltd, claiming it was for “Security Integrated and Logistics Support Services,” which the prosecution said was false.

Counts four and five accuse Oduah, in her capacity as minister, of misappropriating funds meant for a contract awarded to 1-Sec Security Nigeria Ltd by authorising transfers that breached her official trust.

The charges reference Sections 311 and 315 of the Penal Code.

When the charges were read in court, both defendants pleaded not guilty to all five counts.

Their lawyers, Chief Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, for Oduah, and Wale Balogun, SAN, for Odita, applied for bail. Ikpeazu requested bail on self-recognition, saying that Oduah voluntarily returned from the United States to comply with court orders and had previously been on administrative bail with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, representing the prosecution, did not oppose the bail but asked the court to set a firm trial date, saying that the defendants had been served with the case since November 27, 2025.

Justice Muazu granted bail on self-recognition, ordering the defendants to deposit their international passports with the court.

The trial was adjourned to February 12 and 13, 2026, for commencement.

President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the party’s primary scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025.

The President’s endorsement follows that of the APC Elders’ Council in Osun, Igbimo Agba Osun, led by Engr. Sola Akinwumi, former Chairman of the Odu’a Group of Companies, which had earlier thrown its weight behind Oyebamiji.

With this decisive move, Oyebamiji is now positioned as the party’s unified choice going into the primary.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, had in attendance the National Chairman of the APC, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and the party leader in Osun, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

The high-level engagement successfully resolved earlier controversies, including issues surrounding the disqualification of some aspirants, resulting in a strengthened and more united party structure.

In a unanimous decision, other aspirants—including Prince Oyedotun Babayemi, Barr. Adegoke Rasheed (SAN), Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, Mr Benedict Alabi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Mr Babatunde Oralusi, Dr. (Mrs.) Mulikat Abiola Jimoh and Senator Mudashiru Husain agreed to set aside their ambitions and fully support Oyebamiji to boost the party’s chances in the 2026 governorship election.

However, the meeting convened by President Tinubu was boycotted by one aspirant: former National Secretary of the APC, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

The Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, on Wednesday, said the State government expended a total of N49.77 billion on the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport.

The foundation-laying ceremony for the airport was performed by the immediate past Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, on 18 October 2019.

On 15 October 2022, the first aircraft, the Nigerian Air Force aircraft ATR 42, piloted by E.A. Balogun, a flight lieutenant, with Mr Sirika on board, landed at the airport.

However, speaking at the inauguration of the inaugural commercial flight into the Ekiti Airport by United Nigeria Airlines, Mr Oyebanji said that from May 2019 to October 2022, when the trial flight landed under the administration of Governor Kayode Fayemi, the state had expended approximately N14 billion on the project.

The governor stated that,, as indicated in Mr Fayemi’s speech, there was still much to be put in place for the airport to be fully ready for operation.

From 28th October 2022, after we took over the government, we have committed in excess of about N34 Billion to continue the outstanding works on the Airport.

Mr Oyebanji said the Founder, Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, made a direct donation of the navigational aids (CVOR/DME) and control tower equipment worth a total of $1.6 million to the airport.

“In addition, Aare Afe Babalola has also built a 100-car capacity car park, opposite the terminal building, at a cost of N356 million.

“On behalf of the good people of Ekiti State, I wish to use this opportunity to once again appreciate and thank Aare Afe Babalola for his selflessness, generosity and unflinching fatherly support to the airport project and Ekiti State in general “, he said.

He noted that the making of the airport is a collective legacy of at least three governors before him, including Segun Oni, who first conceived the idea, Ayo Fayose, who acquired and initially cleared the site and MrcFayemi, who, despite all odds, braved the wind of challenges to commence the building of this airport six years ago.

“Today’s event is therefore an applause to our collective determination.”

In his address, Mr Babalola commended Mr Oyebanji for his resilience to ensure the full operation of the airport.

He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the growth and development of the state, emphasising that he remains fully prepared to continue offering support in every humanly possible.

According to him, this would provide a faster, safer, and more affordable means of transporting goods and residents in a modern economy.

The United Nigeria Airlines, which touched down at the airport, brought three former governors – Adeniyi Adebayo, Ayodele Fayose, and Mr Fayemi – as well as members of the National Assembly from Ekiti State, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and others to the airport.

Two civic organisations, operating under the umbrella of the Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI) and the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), have issued a joint response to recent remarks by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, regarding the security detail attached to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The groups noted that Seyi Tinubu had previously come under attack during the charged political atmosphere preceding the 2023 party primaries, an incident they said underscored the genuine threats that accompany his public visibility and influence.

In a statement jointly endorsed by GMI’s National Coordinator, Samaila Musa, and DWI’s Director of Strategic Communications, Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele, the organisations argued that Seyi Tinubu’s status as the first son of a sitting president naturally subjects him to heightened scrutiny and, at times, hostility.

According to the statement: “We hold Professor Soyinka in high regard for his contributions to literature and his advocacy for justice, we believe that his comments on this matter merit a thoughtful and reasoned rebuttal.

“Professor Soyinka’s critique appears to stem from a perspective that overlooks the unique circumstances surrounding Seyi Tinubu’s public life and the potential threats he faces.”

The groups emphasised Seyi Tinubu’s sustained interactions with young Nigerians, his involvement in youth-focused initiatives, and his efforts to expand opportunities for everyday young people. While these engagements have strengthened his influence, they said, they have also increased his exposure to risks.

GMI and DWI urged Soyinka to refrain from politicising issues of personal safety, warning that his remarks could unintentionally diminish the seriousness of the threats individuals like Seyi Tinubu encounter.

“In a nation where political tensions and violence can escalate rapidly, it is imperative to recognize the need for adequate security measures for individuals in high-profile positions and especially members of the first family whenever the need arises.

“Seyi Tinubu has not only embraced his role as a public figure but has also actively engaged with the youth of Nigeria, advocating for their interests and facilitating appointments that resonate with their aspirations.

“His commitment to youth empowerment and involvement in advocating for ordinary Nigerian youths has positioned him as a pivotal figure in the current administration, a role that, regrettably, also heightens his vulnerability.

“It is essential to emphasize that the provision of security for Seyi Tinubu is not merely a matter of privilege; it is a necessary precaution to ensure his safety and well-being. In a society where political violence is not uncommon, the protection of individuals who are influential in shaping the future of the nation must be prioritized.

“To dismiss the need for such protection is to disregard the realities of our political landscape and the potential dangers that accompany public service. Furthermore, we urge Professor Soyinka to refrain from politicizing issues of security and safety.

“The implications of his remarks could inadvertently undermine the seriousness of the threats faced by individuals like Seyi Tinubu. While it is crucial to engage in healthy political discourse, it is equally important to approach matters of personal safety with the gravity they deserve knowing fully well the security situation in Nigeria for the past twenty years can not be compared with other claims that Professor Soyinka was trying to reference.”

“Security is not a luxury; it is a fundamental right that should be afforded to all citizens, especially those who have chosen to serve their country in the public eye. The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative and Democracy Watch Initiative stands firm in our belief that Seyi Tinubu, given his unique position and the challenges he faces, is deserving of police protection,” the statement read.

Reiterating their position, the groups maintained that Seyi Tinubu’s circumstances justify the security provided to him. They encouraged all stakeholders, including Soyinka, to prioritise safety above political disagreements.

They added: “Let us move beyond political rhetoric and work together to ensure a secure environment for all Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliations or familial ties.”

The Vice Chairman (Central) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Mr Hakeem Olalemi, has stated that the party will not miss Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Olalemi, who spoke on Wednesday in Lagos, said the governor’s decision to leave the PDP was purely personal and driven by his desire for political protection.

“Every individual has the right to belong to any political party of their choice. I believe Governor Fubara’s defection is his personal decision. He is looking for protection, and he believes that President Bola Tinubu is the one who can provide it,” he said.

The PDP chieftain dismissed claims that the defection was linked to internal crises within the party, arguing that the challenges in Rivers State existed long before the current issues affecting the PDP at the national level.

He attributed the party’s lingering problems to what he described as the refusal of some members to follow due process and adhere to the party’s constitution.

Olalemi expressed confidence that the PDP would soon stabilise and return to a trajectory of progress.

When asked if the party would miss Fubara, he replied that the governor had not been active in party affairs and therefore would not be missed. He added that the PDP wishes him well in his new political journey.

Politics Nigeria had earlier reported that Fubara announced his defection from the PDP to the APC at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

The governor said he made the decision to support President Tinubu, noting that he would have become a former governor without Tinubu’s support.
