A youth group in Plateau State, operating under the banner of Plateau Youth Conscience (PYC), has urged US Congressman Riley Moore to visit the state and witness the large number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) living across various communities.

Moore, who leads the US delegation conducting a fact-finding mission on alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, reported on Wednesday that his team’s visit to Benue State revealed more than 600,000 Christian IDPs in different camps.

A vocal critic of the Nigerian government’s handling of violence against Christians in the Middle Belt, Moore has been in the country with a delegation to investigate the allegations, which the Nigerian government has strongly denied.

However, PYC, in a statement issued by its Coordinator, Peter Agas, said what Moore and his team witnessed in Benue would be “child’s play” compared to the situation in Plateau State.

According to Agas, Plateau has endured violent attacks, killings, and mass displacements for over 25 years. He estimated that more than one million people are currently living as IDPs in various local government areas, including Bokkos, Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bassa, and Kanam, which have been the epicentres of attacks.

Agas said, “The visit of US Congressman Riley Moore and his team to assess the level of Christian genocide in Nigeria is a most welcome development. We have cried out over the killing of Christians in Plateau State by bandits and terrorists, but the Nigerian government continues to deny the reality.

“Even our father, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, who has been the most vocal voice, has been threatened, branded a liar, and told to shut up.

“With Moore and his team coming to find out the truth, we urge them to come to Plateau State and see things for themselves. Here, we have over one million people in IDP camps, and their conditions are appalling. Anyone visiting these camps would weep at the suffering of the inmates.”

Agas added that many of the displaced have been reduced to destitution, with some resorting to begging, while some women have turned to prostitution in a bid to survive. He further alleged that some security personnel in the camps exploit women, only providing rations to those who comply with sexual demands.

“We are begging Rep. Moore and his team to come to Plateau to see the situation for themselves,” Agas pleaded.

The Labour Party (LP) has described former presidential candidate Peter Obi as a “verbal member” of the party, saying he has not shown commitment to the party despite claiming to be a member.

The Labour Party publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, stated this in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP, saying Obi has not supported the party in any way and has withdrawn from its activities.

“He has not shown any cause to say that he is a member of Labour Party outside verbalizing it,” he said.

Ifoh explained that the party has been growing and expanding its reach, citing its performance in the 2023 presidential election where it almost won the presidency.

He attributed the party’s growth to Obi’s candidacy, saying it had attracted many supporters and sympathizers.

He stressed that the party has rules and regulations, and anyone seeking to join or contest for positions must abide by them.

“If you want to be a member of the party, please come in and obey the rules and regulations guiding the party,” the party spokesman added.

Ifoh dismissed allegations of crisis within the party, saying it was an “overflow of success” and that the party had remained united despite attempts by some individuals to create divisions.

“The Labour Party has begun preparations for the 2027 elections and will open its doors to supporters and sympathizers who want to join the party. The party will begin to open programs as early as possible in 2026 to ensure unity and prepare for the upcoming elections.

“We don’t have factions, what we have are imposters, people who were members of the obedient, but thought they could come because they supported us in the election to take over the party,” he said.

Between 2013 and 2022, Nigerian universities were closed due to a series of strikes embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over poor working conditions, infrastructure deficits in the Universities, and a lack of autonomy, among other issues.

During the 10 years, the universities were shut for 27 months, which had serious impact on the country’s education system. The strikes brought academic activities to a grinding halt, which took a toll on thousands of students, lecturers, and parents.

The uncertainty and unpredictability of the academic calendar had become the new norm, leaving students in limbo and struggling to chart their future until the Ahmed Tinubu Administration came into power on May 29, 2023. The administration has been able to keep universities despite several threats by ASUU to embark on strikes again over the same issues.

Recently, the lecturers announced that they had achieved a breakthrough in their renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with the federal government.

Timeline Of The Strikes And Their Duration

2013: ASUU went on strike for five months and 15 days, demanding improved funding and revitalisation of Nigerian public universities.

2017: The lecturers held a one-month strike over unresolved issues with the government.

2018: The union stopped work for three months over the government’s failure to meet their demands.

2020: A nine-month strike took place against the government’s plan to implement the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS.

2022: ASUU began a strike in February, which lasted for eight months to press for the revitalisation of the universities, payment of earned allowances and improved funding for state universities.

These strikes disrupted academic activities in the universities, affecting students, lecturers and the overall education system.

The Lagos State Government has moved to ensure the construction of safe and long-lasting structures across the state.

As part of moves to ensure this, the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) Agency, on Monday, 8th December, 2025 conducted a high-level physical tour to the ongoing projects in Eko Atlantic City.

According to a statement by the official X account of the Lagos State Government on Thursday, the tour included an inspection of ongoing construction activities and critical infrastructure within the iconic city.

The tour also helped to provide LSMTL experts with firsthand insight into the scale, Innovation, and Engineering standards employed at the site.

Speaking during the work visit led by the LSMTL General Manager (GM), Engr. Olayinka Abdul, said the Quality Assurance and Quality Control measures proffered by the visit were to assess structures in the region, with absolute compliance to the Lagos State’s building ethics and codes, which are at par with international best construction practices.

Abdul, represented by the Director Business Development Unit 1, Mrs Lara Awosanya, stated that the on-ground assessment tour underscores the agency’s unwavering commitment to promoting and enforcing the use of qualitatively tested materials in all construction projects across Lagos State, ensuring structural integrity, public safety, and sustainable development.

“Our mission at LSMTL is fundamental to the safety and longevity of every structure in Lagos State; hence, visiting a ground-breaking project like Eko Atlantic City is not only inspiring, but essential,” Awosanya said.

” This initiative allows us to align our Advanced Testing and Certification Frameworks with the realities of large-scale and ambitious developments. We are here to partner, support, and ensure that the materials used in constructing this city of the future meet and exceed the highest international standards.”

Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has described human rights as sacred and fundamental to building a just and progressive society.

Soludo made the assertion in a statement in Awka on Wednesday to mark International Human Rights Day.

The day, which is commemorated every December 10, had the theme ‘Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials’.

International Human Rights Day highlight the need to protect rights such as access to clean water, education, healthcare, and freedom of expression.

The Governor’s wife said that every individual deserves the right to live in safety, succeed and thrive without fear or intimidation.

She stressed that understanding and protecting human rights were essential to making society stronger.

Soludo added that peaceful coexistence depends largely on how people treat one another.

According to her, differences in race, background, gender and beliefs should serve as a source of unity rather than division.

“No one deserves to live in a society governed by fear, alienation and extremism,” she said.

Soludo emphasised that every person, regardless of cultural, political or religious differences, was entitled to full human dignity and fairness, describing such rights as non-negotiable.

The New Initiative for Social Development (NISD), in partnership with the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD), has launched a fresh advocacy movement aimed at mobilising men and boys to champion women’s rights and eliminate gender-based violence (GBV) in Ekiti State.

The project, themed Male Feminists Network, seeks to build at least 1,000 male allies across Ekiti and other Southwest states as part of a growing regional initiative.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day capacity-building workshop for young men and influencers on gender advocacy, feminist principles and GBV prevention, frontline civil society advocate, Professor Christopher Oluwadare, said the programme was part of a wider regional intervention engaging artisan leaders, religious figures and community influencers.

He explained that the goal is to develop a network of male feminists equipped and empowered to promote the rights and well-being of women, while actively working to curb violence in their communities.

Oluwadare challenged cultural beliefs used to deny women leadership roles, noting historical instances in Ile-Ife, Oyo and Ado-Ekiti where women served as traditional rulers. He also stressed that both the Bible and Quran affirm the equality of men and women, adding that many discriminatory practices are cultural inventions rather than divine instructions.

According to him, more than 25 participants, including pastors, imams, welders, electricians, mechanics, barbers and other artisan leaders, were engaged at the Ekiti session. He described the feedback as overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing strong commitment to becoming advocates for women’s rights.

He commended the Ekiti State Government for leading efforts against GBV, describing the state as number one in Nigeria in policy and legislative support for gender equality.

“Although men created patriarchy, women sometimes sustain it unknowingly. Through sensitization, mobilization and continuous social education, we aim to reorient both men and women. Women need men in this fight, and men must speak up. Activism has long been led by women, but without men’s full involvement, the impact is limited,” he said.

Oluwadare added that involving men amplifies results, noting that the male feminist movement is currently running across the 36 states and the FCT. He expressed optimism that many cultural and gender-based barriers will begin to disappear over the next two years.

Religious leaders such as Alhaji Abdulrasaq Alli and Primate Olorunleke Abe commended NISD for the initiative, pledging to take the message to their congregations in the fight against GBV.

Also speaking, a representative of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Muyiwa Falaye, said the Assembly is fully aware of the existing gender-based laws in the state and reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to supporting the programme.

The Commander of 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, has directed troops to provide enhanced security to ensure that farmers in Chanchanji area of Takum local government council in Taraba State, can safely harvest their crops.

He gave the directive on Tuesday when he visited the area following a series of recent attacks that claimed the lives of several farmers, many of whom are of Tiv origin.

The visit, according to a release made available to journalists in the state by the Brigade acting spokesperson, Lt. Umar Muhammad, formed part of ongoing operations under Operation Zafin Wuta, aimed at restoring security and public confidence in Southern Taraba.

He was also said to have authorised extended and sustained patrols across all affected communities before, during, and after the harvest period.

Brigadier General Uwa urged personnel to remain professional, vigilant, and respectful of human rights, emphasising the importance of strong civil-military relations in restoring lasting peace.

During the visit,the Brigade Commander, was also confirmed to have led troops on a fighting patrol through identified flashpoints and key routes leading to farmlands.

“The show of force was intended to deter criminal elements believed to be responsible for the attacks and to reassure residents of the military’s preparedness to prevent further violence.

“The patrols also support broader clearance and stabilisation operations currently underway in the region.

“The Brigade Commander met with displaced residents and farmers sheltering at the Chanchanji Market Square. Many recounted their fears of returning to their homes and farmlands, despite a successful farming season”, the troops confirmed.

At the time of filing this report, several communities, including Ayu, Dooshima, New Gboko, Adu Tyopaa, Peeki, and Tyojande, remain deserted following the attacks.
