The Owerri Zone Awareness Coalition, OZAC, has urged the Governor of Imo State Hope Uzodinma to avoid making the mistake of producing a wrong successor after his administration, to avoid moving the state backwards at a time the world is moving at breakneck speed.

OZAC gave the advice in an open letter addressed to the Governor, signed by its President, Emmanuel Okwu, and Secretary, Austin Echefu.

It stated that the letter is written at a defining moment for the state when the legacy of the Governor will no longer be limited to roads, buildings, or political victories, but the quality of leadership been midwifed by him as successor, noting that power ends but its consequences do not.

The group maintained that Who comes after Uzodinma matters a lot as it will either consolidate on his gains or dismantle them with frightening speed.

“Let it be said clearly that your administration has not been without visible effort. From road rehabilitation across key urban centres, to improved security coordination, urban renewal projects, and renewed activity in health and education infrastructure, your Government has restored a measure of structure where chaos once thrived. These are tangible footprints that history will record.

“But history will also demand an answer to a larger question: did you secure the future or mortgage it? Succession is not a gamble. It is the final and most decisive test of leadership. Any error here will erase years of effort in a single reckless political transaction.”the letter read.

OZAC stated that it aligns firmly with the legitimate aspiration of Owerri Zone to produce the next Governor of the state, pointing out that equity, balance, and fairness justify the demand.

It, however, made it clear that zoning is not a substitute for competence, maintaining that the zone must not be reduced to a shelter for mediocrity simply because it is its turn.

The Nigerian Senate has approved the request by President Bola Tinubu to deploy the country’s military forces to Benin Republic.

Naija News reports that the decision of the lawmakers was approved during plenary on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The approval follows the earlier consideration of the request by the Senate Committee of the Whole, in which the lawmakers unanimously backed the decision of the federal government to deploy troops to the Benin Republic to restore peace and stability following last weekend’s attempted coup in the West African nation.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this on Tuesday during plenary after lawmakers considered the request in the Committee of the Whole in line with section 5, Part 11.

“An injury to one is an injury to all,” Akpabio declared while announcing the decision of the Senate.

The Senate’s consent letter will be transmitted to President Tinubu immediately.

It would be recalled that President Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate requesting consent for the deployment of Nigerian troops to Benin Republic.

This was disclosed on Tuesday in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary.

Tinubu stated that the deployment is for a peace mission in response to the ongoing attempted coup in Benin.

The President explained that the deployment is to provide support in the country as requested by President Patrice Talon, following the recent failed coup attempt.

The deployment is in line with the protocol of the regional bloc, Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.

Tinubu said it also in tandem with section 30 sub 5 of Nigeria’s constitution in consultation with Nigeria Defence Council.

The N4.6 billion arms procurement fraud trial of former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki and his co-defendants stalled on Tuesday at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja due to the absence of a prosecution witness.

Mr Dasuki is standing trial in the 10-year-old case alongside former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa, his son Sagir Bafarawa, former Minister of State for Finance Bashir Yuguda, and Dalhatu Investment Limited.

Prosecution lawyer Rotimi Jacobs, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), told the judge that the second prosecution witness, Kazeem Yusuf, an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigator, was unavailable due to bereavement.

Reflecting on the prolonged time the case has taken in court, the trial judge, Halilu Yusuf, said, “This is one case that we all agree has to be disposed of.”

Mr Jacobs, who regretted the further delay caused by the absence of the witness, said he was recently informed of the witness’ bereavement by his boss.

He said he had made efforts to contact the witness directly to no avail.

The prosecutor then applied for an adjournment of the case following the absence of the witness.

The defence lawyers did not object to the application for adjournment.

Mr Yuguda’s lawyer, A. O. Ayodele, told the court that they were “intimated” about the circumstances surrounding the witness unavailability.
The judge then adjourned the case until 28 January 2026 for the cross-examination of the second prosecution witness.

Mr Dasuki and his co-defendants are facing 25 counts of misappropriation, criminal breach of trust and receiving stolen property.

The charges accused them of diverting N4.6 billion from the NSA office’s account. The money was said to be meant for procurement of arms to firm up the offensive against Boko Haram terrorists during former President Goodluck Jonathan administration, between 2014 and 2015.

They all pleaded not guilty.

What the prosecution has said so far

The first prosecution witness, Hamza Abdullahi, who served as the second-in-command of the EFCC’s Special Task Force that investigated the alleged arms procurement fraud in the NSA office, had testified that N4.633 billion was traced to Dalhatu Investment Limited. He said Mr Sagir, the son of the former Sokoto governor, is the company’s sole account signatory.

The second prosecution witness, Mr Yusuf, had also testified that funds were released from the NSA office for supply of security equipment but that the contracts were not executed.

He said, during investigation, Mr Sagir brought a list showing how the funds were used.

The witness said the funds were used to sponsor pilgrimage to Mecca and partly used for the 2015 political campaigns of the then-ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He listed the recipients of the funds to include Sheikh AbdurRahman Al-Sudais Foundation (N500 million), belonging to former Governor Bafarawa, and 2015 Sokoto PDP governorship candidate, Abdallah Wali, who allegedly received N580 million through a company.

The case is one of the twin arms procurement fraud matters filed against Mr Dasuki and his co-defendants over the streams of funds he released from NSA office’s accounts between 2014 and 2015.

In the trial, EFCC prosecution Mr Dasuki, a retired colonel, alongside a former General Manager at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Aminu Baba-Kusa; Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited on 32 counts of fraud involving diversion of 33.2 billion arms funds entrusted to the NSA office.

In March, the EFCC re-arraigned the defendants on criminal breach of trust, among other charges, following the reassignment of the case that started in 2015 to a new judge, Charles Agbaza.

The defendants denied all charges as they did when they were first arraigned in 2015.

These trials suffered multiple adjournments in their early years, largely due to the State Security Services (SSS) refusing to release Mr Dasuki on bail despite multiple court orders.

The cases are part of Nigeria’s longest-running high-profile corruption trials, reflecting systemic delays in the country’s judicial system.

Mr Dasuki served as NSA between 2012 and 2015, at the height of Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria’s North-east, during the administration of then-President Goodluck Jonathan.

An audit panel set up by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to office after defeating Mr Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election, revealed that about $2 billion entrusted in the office of the NSA, then led by Mr Dasuki, for procurement of arms could not be accounted for.

The EFCC, which instituted multiple charges against diverse persons who received funds from the NSA office, alleged that the arms funds were doled out to friends, relatives, political allies, particularly members of the PDP for purposes unrelated to the purchase of arms.

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have urged the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to sustain ongoing kinetic operations against bandits, terrorists and kidnappers who refuse to lay down arms.

This call was made during Peace and Development rallies held in Gwagwalada and Lugbe in the FCT on Tuesday.

The rally, organized by the Ayudent Empowerment Initiative, aimed to enlighten citizens on the role of peace in socio-economic development and garner citizens support and cooperation with the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

At the rally, the residents attributed the rescue of 318 kidnap victims and other operational successes across the country to the synergy in the AFN under the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede.

They emphasize that synergy is crucial to defeating bandits and terrorists, highlighting the importance of cooperation among security agencies, government, and locals to tackle insecurity in the nation.

Anselm Gambo, who spoke to journalists during the rally in Gwagwalada, attributed the various successes against kidnappers, bandits, and terrorists across the nation to the sustained synergy of the AFN.

“We must commend the Armed Forces under the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, for the intensity of operations against the enemies of the country. We urge them to intensify operations against those who refuse to lay down arms,” he said.

Gambo added, “We are seeing massive successes in Sokoto, Kano, Kogi, the South East, and elsewhere. All these achievements result from the synergy of the different arms under the able leadership of the CDS. It is highly commendable. We want them to sustain it.”

In Lugbe, a taxi driver commended the AFN for their ongoing operations across the country, saying that bandits and kidnappers are currently facing the consequences.

The Team Lead of the Ayudent Empowerment Initiative, Victor Benson, lamented the negative effects of the security situation in the country and urged the people to support and cooperate with security agencies to restore peace. He emphasized that socio-economic development will remain elusive as long as insecurity persists.

The Peace and Development rallies were held in several cities, including Lagos, Kaduna, Keffi, Agbor, Nyanya, Zuba, and Mararaba.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Okechukwu Osohua, has described as a mere Christmas carol and gathering of friends the November convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Osohua made this statement on Tuesday when he appeared in an interview on ‘Sunrise Daily’, a programme on Channels Television monitored by DAILY POST.

“As far as I’m concerned, it was just a gathering of friends, and I can even call it a Christmas Carol because it was not known to law; there was no convention,” he said.

DAILY POST reports that the PDP held the convention between November 15 and 16 in the South-Western state.

Recall that at the event, the group, backed by Governor Seyi Makinde, expelled the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike; former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, and Samuel Anyanwu, among others.

The group cited anti-party activities as the basis for the decision, further dividing the PDP.

The party later issued a certificate of expulsion to Wike and the expelled members.

However, Osohua said the expulsion was driven by selfish interest. According to him, the expulsion certificate is novel and unknown to the law.

The abducted schoolchildren from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Niger State have shared the harrowing experience on how their abductors forced them to sleep on a trampoline inside the bush and were warned not to make noise.

One of the schoolchildren rescued, Florence Michael, spoke on Monday shortly after the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, officially handed the children over to the Niger State Government.

According to her, the terrorists forced them to lie on a trampoline inside a thick bush near a river, warning them that any noise would attract beating and delay their return home.

“They told us if we make noise, they would beat us and we would not go back home,” she said.

“They gave us a trampoline to lie on and kept us in the bush near a river.”

She appealed to the government to intensify protection measures so that schoolchildren across the country can learn without fear.

Speaking during the handover, Ribadu disclosed that the joint rescue operation was coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Armed Forces, and other security agencies.

Ribadu was represented by Wing Commander Abdullahi Idi Hong said the federal government had already rolled out immediate short-term protection strategies for schools in high-risk areas, while also partnering state governments, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to develop community-driven, long-term security solutions.

According to him, insecurity will not be allowed to trample on the right of any Nigerian child to education.
