Eight UNIJOS students killed in Jos road crash
Eight students of the University of Jos
(UNIJOS) have died following a road traffic accident on Zaria Road in the Plateau State capital.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when a bus carrying the students collided with a trailer opposite Unity Bank.
Eyewitnesses said eleven students were on board the bus. Seven were pronounced dead at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries at a hospital, bringing the death toll to eight. Three other students are receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. All the victims were male.
The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Peter Longsan, confirmed the accident in a statement on Thursday. “Today, 11th December 2025, FRSC Plateau State Sector Command received a distress call at about 0230 hours, reporting a road traffic crash opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road, Jos. The crash involved two vehicles, a trailer and a bus.
Eleven people were on board the bus and were said to be students of the University of Jos. On arrival, seven people were suspected to be dead on the spot, and they were eventually certified dead by a doctor. Another victim later died in the hospital, bringing the total number of deceased to eight. Three others are currently receiving treatment at the hospital. All victims were males,” he said.
Eyewitnesses indicated that the bus was speeding and attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre, causing the driver to lose control.
The Sector Commander of FRSC Plateau, Olajide Mogaji, called on motorists to exercise caution, particularly avoiding night travel, excessive speed, dangerous driving, driving under the influence, or driving when fatigued. “The government needs you alive and wants you to enjoy life to the fullest this festive season and beyond,” he said, urging the public to report accidents or emergencies via the FRSC toll-free number, 122.
Meanwhile, a Plateau State High Court in Jos has sentenced a police officer, Ruya Auta, to death by hanging or lethal injection for the killing of University of Jos student, Rinji Bala, on May 13, 2020. The ruling was delivered on Monday by Hon. Justice David Mann, who found the officer guilty of violating Bala’s fundamental right to life.
Speaking after the judgement, counsel to the Plateau State Government, Garba Pwul (SAN), said, “It has been five years of efforts and tenacity to bring justice to the deceased, the family, and even the government. Today, we have seen justice served.”
He added that the ruling should act as a deterrent to negligent security personnel who misuse their firearms. “We hope that this judgment will serve as a deterrent to trigger-happy and dangerously negligent uniformed men, and provide some measure of comfort to the deceased’s family,” Pwul said.

Lagos Police Debunk Theft Allegation Against Inspector Beaten by Mob, Arrest 13 Suspects — Akelicious
The Lagos State Police Command has refuted claims circulating in a viral video alleging that an Inspector of Police was caught stealing and subsequently beaten by a mob.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 11, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Adebisi, described the allegations as false and misleading, clarifying that the officer is attached to the Lagos State Taskforce.
According to her, the Inspector was on official duty enforcing the state government’s ban on wrongful parking along Brown Street, Oshodi, when he stopped a motorist attempting to park illegally. The motorist allegedly became violent, sparking a confrontation.
“During the incident, the Inspector accidentally discharged shots onto the road, and debris from the impact affected some passersby. The mob immediately gathered and violently attacked the Inspector, leaving him with serious injuries,” Adebisi said.
She confirmed that the officer has been subjected to disciplinary measures in line with police procedures for his unprofessional conduct.
The spokesperson further disclosed that 13 suspects captured in the viral video assaulting the officer have been arrested and are currently in custody. They will be prosecuted at the conclusion of investigations.

While condemning the Inspector’s misconduct, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, warned sternly against attacks on police officers performing lawful duties. He stressed that assaulting law enforcement personnel is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

No fewer than 17 persons have been reportedly murdered following an unprovoked attack by armed men, suspected to be the Jukun militia, in Tse Ajogo village, Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State.
The armed men were said to have launched a coordinated attack on returning Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs in the village, leading to the death of 17 persons while others are still missing.
According to popular security expert, Zagazola Makama, the sad incident happened on Wednesday at about 6 am.
Quoting reliable sources, Makama said that the latest incident marks the second attack on returning IDPs in Tse Ajogo within a two-month period.
The attackers were said to have stormed the village with dangerous weapons, firing indiscriminately at residents and IDPs.
Makama said authorities have called for heightened vigilance in the area and urged troops to sustain patrols along key routes to protect resettling communities.
“Security operatives are working to track and neutralise the attackers”, he said in a post on his official X handle.
A United States Air Force intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft is currently conducting operations over Babana, a strategic border crossing between Nigeria and the Benin Republic known for militant smuggling activity.
Babana has long served as a key transit route for armed groups, particularly Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), who exploit the porous border to smuggle weapons and supplies.
Security expert, Brant Philip, confirmed the ongoing surveillance in a post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, noting that Babana remains a hotspot of interest due to its proximity to Basso in Benin, which was recently targeted by armed militants.
The Nigerian Army had previously clashed with unidentified gunmen along the same axis in August, underlining the security volatility of the corridor.
Basso, just a few kilometres from Babana, came under attack in recent months, although the assault was mostly repelled. No group has formally claimed responsibility for the incident.
Both locations sit on the same smuggling route that security agencies say has increasingly become a corridor for cross-border arms trafficking.
In other news, operatives of the Benue Police Command have successfully repelled an armed bandits’ attack targeting vehicles along Adoka Road, rescuing passengers who were stranded by the assailants.
According to Zagazola Makama, sources disclosed that at about 00:30 hours on Wednesday, armed bandits attacked vehicles with passengers along the route. The DPO promptly mobilised patrol teams alongside tactical units within the area to intercept the assailants.
Upon arrival, officers engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to flee into the bush and abandon the victims.

The Ogun State Government has commenced a new phase of road maintenance across the state as part of preparations for the Yuletide season.
The initiative, coordinated by the Ogun State Public Works Agency, OGPWA, seeks to improve road conditions, ease traffic flow, and enhance safety for residents, commuters and tourists.
Speaking on the renewed intervention on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Works, Babatunde Adesina, reiterated that the intervention was part of a continuous road improvement programme aimed at boosting economic activities and ensuring safer mobility across the state.
Adesina said the state was committed to ensuring that major and inner roads remained motorable throughout and after the festive period.
“We understand that the Yuletide season comes with increased movement and it is our responsibility to ensure that the roads are safe and accessible. This new phase of maintenance demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing reliable infrastructure for the people of Ogun State.”
He explained that the ongoing repairs would focus on high-traffic corridors, link roads and critical routes connecting major communities, adding that the agency had already deployed multiple teams across the three senatorial districts to ensure timely completion.
“Our teams are on the field carrying out pothole patching and other essential repairs. We want residents and travellers to experience smoother movement as they go about their activities during this festive period,” Adesina added.
He encouraged the general public to support the agency by reporting areas requiring urgent attention, as community feedback would always play key roles in the agency’s rapid-response efforts.
Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, has strongly condemned both past and present administrations for their failure to deliver justice regarding the 2015 Zaria massacre and for the worsening insecurity nationwide.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday ahead of the anniversary of the bloody clash, El-Zakzaky declared the IMN to be “a power to be reckoned with,” praising the resilience and commitment of its millions of members against state force.
The IMN leader praised his followers for their unwavering commitment in the face of violent state opposition, referencing the 2015 clash where many were killed.
“In terms of numbers, even if you hate us, you know that we are millions. In terms of commitment, we have shown that guns cannot frighten us, because we have faced them. Pictures show when people bare-handed approach those who are shooting them,” he said.
When asked if he had forgiven the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, whose administration oversaw the military operation, El-Zakzaky stated they would meet on the Day of Judgment.
He recounted a phone call he received from one of Buhari’s ministers while he was injured.
He said: “I told the minister that now I am waiting for my blood to drain so that I will pass, and I told him my greetings to General Buhari. I hope they will do the government well. We will meet on the day of judgement.”
The 2015 clash in Zaria occurred during a Maulud celebration when IMN members occupied a major highway and reportedly blocked the convoy of the then Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai.
What began as a standoff escalated into violence as soldiers opened fire, claiming the blockage threatened the army chief’s safety. The IMN disputed the military’s account, insisting its members were unarmed and that the army used unjustifiable force.
In the hours that followed, soldiers launched coordinated operations on IMN sites, including El-Zakzaky’s residence, with human rights groups later reporting that hundreds were killed, figures the military denied.
After years in detention and prolonged legal battles, El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, were released in July 2021 when a Kaduna State High Court discharged and acquitted them of all charges.

The former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has officially accepted the choice of former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2026 Osun State governorship election.
Omisore, speaking on a television programme on Wednesday night, said he aligned with the decision following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s endorsement of Oyebamiji.
It will be recalled that Omisore was among seven aspirants disqualified by the APC Screening Committee over alleged violations of party guidelines and electoral provisions. Others disqualified include former Deputy Governor Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Prince Dotun Babayemi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), and Babatunde Haketer Oralusi.
Following agitations by the aspirants, who raised concerns that the screening process favoured Oyebamiji, President Tinubu convened a reconciliation meeting, during which all aspirants eventually aligned with his choice—except Omisore, who was absent.
However, speaking on TVC News’ Politics Tonight, Omisore said the party must follow the direction of its leader, adding that he fully supports the consensus arrangement.
He emphasised that he has no regrets about his past political decisions, describing himself as “an old wine that tastes better,” while noting that he still commands a strong base of organic supporters.
Omisore added that although he had proposed alternative approaches to the party leadership, he is committed to working with the President’s decision going forward.
He said he would soon brief his supporters on the new development and stressed the need for the APC to overhaul its strategy ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.

Democracy and governance experts recently convened in Gombe, northeast Nigeria, to examine the country’s electoral system and propose reforms aimed at strengthening democratic development.
The dialogue, hosted on 4 December by the Vice Chancellor of Federal University Kashere, Umaru Pate, featured PREMIUM TIMES publisher, Dapo Olorunyomi, as the chairman of the occasion, with former INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega serving as the guest lecturer.
In their respective speeches, Messrs Jega and Olorunyomi emphasised that Nigeria, along with other democratic nations, must continually enhance the integrity of its elections to make them more credible and more influential on democratic governance and socioeconomic development.
Mr Jega argued that strengthening electoral integrity remains one of the most critical pathways to securing “good democratic governance.”
Also, Mr Olorunyomi contended that credible elections can serve as the foundation for competent leadership, effective governance, and a renewed national purpose.
In his opening remarks, the vice-chancellor said the gathering came at a crucial moment for a country still searching for democratic renewal and institutional trust.
“As a public university, we bear a responsibility not only to train skilled graduates, but also to contribute meaningfully to national dialogue, democratic awareness, and responsible leadership,” Mr Pate, a professor of media and society, said.
He noted that Nigeria faces a crisis of public trust, declining civic engagement, rising misinformation and persistent governance failures, but added that citizens’ resilience and ongoing reform efforts offer hope.
Mr Olorunyomi, who also serves as the CEO of the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), stated that Nigeria’s elections have not yielded good governance, partly due to weaknesses in the architecture of electoral institutions.
He acknowledged reforms introduced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the years, including the BVAS and IReV systems. Yet, he said that gains remain fragile due to political interference, logistical problems and the growing judicialisation of elections.
“Increasingly, courts—not voters—determine winners, eroding trust in the sanctity of the ballot,” he said.
Mr Olorunyomi also faulted the state of political parties, describing many as hollow structures undermined by monetised primaries, godfatherism and imposed candidacies.
“When parties elevate poorly prepared or unqualified candidates, poor governance becomes not an aberration but an inevitability.
“Beyond institutions lies our political culture: the normalisation of vote buying, the persistent shadow of violence, and a growing cynicism that pushes many citizens toward disengagement. The consequence is a legitimacy deficit—leaders elected by a fraction of eligible voters are often unable to command the moral authority required for difficult reforms,” he said.
Despite these challenges, the veteran journalist said signs of democratic renewal are visible in expanding civic activism, rising youth participation, a more engaged diaspora, stronger independent media, and digital-driven public oversight.
He called for deeper reforms, including reinforcing INEC’s autonomy, democratising political parties, enforcing campaign finance transparency, and strengthening public institutions to prioritise merit over patronage.
Mr Olorunyomi emphasised the growing importance of accountability journalism and ethical artificial intelligence in defending electoral integrity and strengthening public scrutiny.
“In this rapidly changing landscape, accountability journalism and ethical AI are now indispensable. Nigeria’s media ecosystem demonstrates that investigative reporting, real-time fact-checking, and forensic electoral monitoring can counteract the distortions of digital platforms and opaque algorithms. At the same time, emerging ethical standards in AI—anchored in transparency, fairness, and protection from exploitative data practices—provide new guardrails for how political actors, platforms, and regulators deploy automated systems.
“Together, these forces form a counter-Leviathan: a democratic infrastructure of truth, scrutiny, and principled technological governance. They expand civic agency, protect electoral integrity, and reaffirm the principle that political choice must rest on fact, fairness, and a trusted public sphere.”
He added that Nigeria’s democratic performance carries continental significance, warning that failures embolden anti-democratic forces across Africa. He said the 2027 elections must serve as a watershed moment for rebuilding trust and signalling Nigeria’s commitment to democratic renewal.
“As Africa’s largest democracy, most populous country, and a cultural powerhouse, Nigeria sets precedents that reverberate across the continent. When our elections are credible, and our institutions work, we strengthen democratic norms in a region where they are fragile. When they falter, we unwittingly embolden anti-democratic forces elsewhere.
“This is why the 2027 elections must be a watershed moment—a chance to learn from past failures, repair broken bridges of trust, and signal to Africa and the world that Nigeria remains committed to the hard, necessary work of democratic renewal. If we rise to this historic responsibility, we will not only stabilise our own republic but also offer a model of hope and possibility for the developing world.”
The former INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, in his lecture, argued that periodic elections alone do not guarantee that citizens’ votes are unshackled or meaningful. He said only elections conducted professionally, efficiently and transparently and in which citizens vote with conscience, free of fraud, irregularities and inducement, can truly reflect the will of the electorate.
Mr Jega lamented that Nigeria has spent 26 years “muddling through” democratic development, constrained by poor electoral integrity, inadequate representation and a governance model that fails to address citizens’ basic needs for security, dignity and a decent quality of life.
“Free and fair elections, on which the political system and its governance model are predicated, have been essentially constrained, and their integrity undermined. This raises significant questions, especially about how Nigerians practice electoral democracy, and about the fate of Nigeria’s democratic development.”
The former INEC chairman said weak governance structures and institutions have contributed to a crisis of legitimacy, as citizens increasingly lose faith in the state’s capacity to protect their rights or address their needs.
“In present-day Nigeria, given what can aptly be termed as a crisis of governance at all levels, the processes, structures and institutions of governance are essentially weak, or have virtually collapsed, with regrettable consequences on desirable economic growth and socioeconomic development.”
This drift, he warned, has led to citizens becoming indifferent to political participation and constructive engagement in the governance processes, even losing hope in democratisation and governance processes, which is even more worrisome.
To reverse this, Mr Jega called for sustained reforms to strengthen electoral preparation and administration, insisting that integrity in elections has a direct correlation with quality representation and good democratic governance, which are primary requirements for democratic development and consolidation.
“One of the most important efforts to strengthen good democratic governance in Nigeria is to uplift the integrity of elections. This can and should be done by increasing the capacity, competence, and professionalism of INEC.”
He urged INEC to learn from global best practices, enforce sanctions against electoral offenders, deploy adaptable technology, expand voter education, and deepen partnerships with stakeholders on electoral integrity, nationally and internationally.
“It is also necessary to do whatever it takes to continue to enhance active citizen participation in political and electoral processes.”
The professor said these measures are essential in an era marked globally by democratic backsliding and autocratisation.

Mr Jega concluded that elections with integrity remain the kernel of democratic consolidation. Free, fair and credible elections, he said, give citizens hope and confidence in governance and help mobilise active participation, an indispensable requirement for Nigeria’s democratic development.
“No doubt, Nigeria and Nigerians are desirous of entrenching good democratic governance. Therefore, serious attention needs to be focused on making Nigerian elections among the best, as soon as possible, in terms of integrity,” he said.
“In countries like Nigeria, which are currently in the sphere of, and practising, liberal, representative, or electoral democracy, there is a need for constant vigilance and effort to prevent democratic regression or backsliding and ensure electoral integrity to nurture, sustain, and consolidate good democratic governance.”

The Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula has said his principal’s journey from the pulpit to public leadership offers a strong reminder that the gospel is most convincingly preached through acts of service to humanity.
In statement made available to THE AUTHORITY NEWS in Makurdi on Wednesday, Sir Kula, waxing biblical, pointed out that Gov. Alia’s dynamic approach in governance embodies the biblical teaching in James 2:18: which says, “Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith in my works.”
”Through consistent, deliberate efforts to improve the welfare of citizens, the Governor in his two years in office has demonstrated that the Christian ministry is not limited to sermons on the pulpit, but is deeply rooted in fulfilling covenants and meeting people’s basic needs”, Sir Kula stressed.
The statement pointed out that, “though a priest, he has refused to use God’s name for propaganda and theatrics the manner others who were claiming to be born again Christians were doing in the past”.
“And amidst challenges, including calculated evil mechanization from disgruntled elements in the state, Gov. Alia works quietly, yet delivers results that speak louder than any publicity. He is focused, disciplined, and driven by purpose rather than applause”, Sir Kula said.
The CPS stressed that Gov. Alia’s achievements which are the fulfillment of his social contract with the Benue electorates may not come with noise, but their effects are undeniable and long-lasting. He does not chase attention or propaganda; he simply gets the job done with humility and consistency.
He maintained that his Principal’s emphasis on compassion, community development, and responsible governance epitomises Christ’s instruction in Matthew 5:16: which says, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
The statement further said, “by prioritizing social welfare, restoring dignity to public institutions, workforce and championing policies that uplift the vulnerable, Governor Alia practically translates spiritual values into tangible action”.
The CPS quoting Governor Alia, said, “I am not just a Governor in the office; I am a field man. In priesthood, if you are not a field person, you cannot do the work. You must get in there, create the story, shape the narrative, and explain it to the people. When they understand, they choose to come on board, and then leadership moves forward. That is exactly what we are doing”.

He gave a hint at the demands of the kidnappers as he informed journalist Rufai Oseni about the update.
