Terror at Bondi Beach: Ten dead after two gunmen open fire on innocent beachgoers and attendees at a Jewish holiday festival
Ten people, including children, are dead after two gunmen armed with rifles opened fire at Bondi Beach where a Jewish holiday celebration was unfolding on Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses said two men stepped out of a vehicle on Campbell Parade, near Bondi Pavilion, and opened fire about 6.40pm on Sunday with footage showing blast after blast on the tourist strip. Some witnesses report more than 30 shots.
Video and photos taken by a Daily Mail photographer show a gunman opening fire from an elevated bridge using a large rifle.
One gunman has been shot dead. The other one was also shot, and is now in custody.
A festival, Chanukah by the Sea, advertised as a night of family fun, was taking place, with children attending the event when the gunmen opened fire.
An ambulance spokeswoman confirmed to Daily Mail that 13 patients have so far been transported to various hospitals around Sydney.
She said 40 units – including ambulances, intensive care specialists, and 3 helicopters are on the scene. The number of units are steadily increasing.
NSW Police are urging people to avoid the area.

A witness told Daily Mail: ‘These men pulled over their car put a black flag with an emblem on the windshield then walked over the footbridge and started firing.’
Tim Hamilton was with friends in North Bondi when he thought he heard a car backfiring but ‘more violent than that, like a little bit louder’.
‘I stood up and looked over and then I just saw people on the beach running really fast away from that area, like the Bondi Pavilion but the north side of it,’ he told Daily Mail.
He added that people were hiding behind the concrete wall and running into the ocean to try and stay clear of the shooters.
Tim said he did not receive an emergency alert on his phone following the incident.
‘When we were walking home, we saw this guy who was up at Speedo Cafe, which is kind of near the North Bondi grass, and he was on the pavement bleeding.
‘That was quite far away from where the shooters were. So I think one of the bullets must have travelled quite far. There were people helping him.’
The beach was crowded with hundreds of tourists and locals at the end of a 30C summer day.

Kirk Gehri, a local who was at Depot in Bondi when the shooting took place, said that it was chaos.
‘They were just shooting openly at that bridge,’ he said.
‘I saw some people were running away when I first arrived.’
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: ‘We are aware of an active security situation in Bondi.
‘We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police.’
Police also confirmed there was no incident at Dover Heights, where a similar Chanukah event was expected to be held.
‘Please do NOT share unconfirmed rumours,’ it said.

Police are responding to “shocking and distressing” scenes at Sydney’s Bondi Beach after reports of multiple shots being fired.
New South Wales police said two people are in custody at Bondi Beach but added the operation is ongoing.
“We continue to urge people to avoid the area. Please obey ALL police directions. Do not cross police lines,” the force said on social media.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the incident is “shocking and distressing” and that emergency services are on the scene working to save lives.
“I saw at least 10 people on the ground and blood everywhere,” 30-year-old local Harry Wilson, who witnessed the shooting, told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“We are aware of an active security situation in Bondi. We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police,” a spokesperson for the prime minister said.
Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, told Sky News in an interview that the
shooting happened at an event at the beach celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, which began at sundown.
“This is the Jewish community at its best coming together to mark a happy occasion. If we were targeted deliberately in this way, it’s something of a scale that none of us could have ever fathomed. It’s a horrific thing,” he said, adding his media adviser had been wounded in the attack.

Sky News correspondent Nicole Johnston, in Sydney, said she has seen some of the graphic video that is now circulating on social media.
“It is graphic and it is shocking. You can see two men, active shooters, firing from a pedestrian bridge right at Bondi Beach,” she tells Sky News.
“There’s also video of injured people on the ground. They’re receiving medical treatment. There is blood on the ground. So clearly that have been sort of at least a number of injured people there.”
Sky News has not yet been unable to verify video circulating on social media.

Police in Australia say they are responding to a developing incident at Sydney’s Bondi Beach after media outlets reported a shooting incident.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported shots at the beach on Sunday, saying multiple people had been injured. Television networks Sky and ABC aired footage showing people lying on the ground.
The New South Wales (NSW) police said two people were in custody, adding that the operation was ongoing.
“Anyone at the scene should take shelter,” they posted on X, calling on the public to avoid the area.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government was aware “of an active security situation in Bondi”.
“We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police,” said the spokesperson.

Six people rushed to hospital after Bondi shooting

The NSW Ambulance service has confirmed that six people have been taken to local hospitals following a shooting incident at Bondi beach.
An ambulance spokesperson could not say the nature of the injuries or the condition of the people taken to hospitals, but that ambulance staff had been treating people on the scene with gunshot injuries.
The service was called to area at 6.45pm to reports of multiple people shot, the spokesperson said. There were 25 units at the scene, including helicopters and intensive care units.
Four people had been taken to St Vincent’s hospital, one person had been taken to Royal Prince Alfred hospital and another to St George hospital.

There was a Hanukah event on at Bondi beach tonight. A listing describing the event said it was set to take place from 5pm to 9pm at the Bondi Park playground, with free admission.
The event was called Chanukah By The Sea and it was hosted by the Chabad of Bondi.
Sunday was the first day of the Jewish festival Hanukkah.
“Join Chabad of Bondi for our Annual Chanukah Festival as We Celebrate Jewish Life by lighting up the Iconic Bondi Beach,” an advertisement for the event states.

A NSW police spokesperson has told the Guardian they have received “multiple calls” from the public about shooting in the Bondi area.
A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said there had “definitely been a shooting in the area”, but that the situation was developing rapidly. They said:
We have many, many units in the area. We are definitely treating multiple people and have multiple vehicles [responding].
The ambulance service received their first calls for assistance just before 7pm. Incidents were centred on the Queen Elizabeth Drive area, the ambulance spokesperson added.

Five men have been arrested in Germany suspected of being involved in a plot to drive a vehicle into people at a Christmas market.
Three Moroccans, an Egyptian and a Syrian were detained on Friday over the plan to target a market in the southern Bavarian state. Authorities said they suspected an “Islamist motive”.
Prosecutors said the Egyptian – a 56-year-old – was alleged to have “called for a vehicle attack… with the aim of killing or injuring as many people as possible”. The Moroccans allegedly agreed to carry out the attack.
Officials in Germany have been on high alert after previous attacks at Christmas markets, including in Magdeburg last December that killed six people.
Authorities did not say when the planned attack was supposed to take place or which market was the target, though said they believed it to be one in the Dingolfing-Landau area, north east of Munich.
German newspaper Bild reported the Egyptian man was an imam at a mosque in the area.
Police said the Moroccan men – aged 30, 28 and 22 – were arrested accused of having agreed to commit murder, while the Syrian man, a 37-year-old, was accused of encouraging the suspects “in their decision to commit the crime”.
The five suspects appeared before a magistrate on Saturday and remain in custody.
Joachim Herrmann, Bavaria’s state interior minister, told Bild the “excellent cooperation between our security services” had helped to prevent “a potentially Islamist-motivated attack”.
Christmas markets are popular festive attractions throughout Germany, frequently attracting large crowds and significant tourism.
Security at events has been increased in recent years, since an attack in Berlin in 2016 when a man drove a lorry into a market crowd, killing 12 people.

Ukraine’s Zelenskyy confirms attendance in Berlin
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that he intends to participate in talks in Berlin on ending the conflict in the country.
However, it remained unclear whether he would arrive in Berlin on Sunday and meet the US special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
“The most important are my meetings with representatives of [US] President [Donald] Trump, as well as meetings with our European partners and many leading politicians about the foundation of peace — a political agreement to end the war,” Zelenskyy said in a video message posted Saturday on Facebook.

The talks in Berlin, which are to be held at an as yet undisclosed location, are initially planned at an adviser level on a potential ceasefire in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy is also expected to attend an economic meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz by Monday at the latest

At least two people have been killed and nine others injured after a shooter opened fire on Brown University’s campus, sparking a major manhunt.
More than 400 law enforcement personnel are searching for the suspect, hours after the mass shooting in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday afternoon.
The Ivy League university reported that at least two people died in the attack, while seven people were in critical condition late on Saturday, with all the victims likely students.
An emergency text message alerted students to a shooter near the Barus and Holley engineering building near Hope Street at around 4.20pm. The university told students to lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice, or run, hide or fight as a last resort. It said students were forced to barricade themselves in buildings using desks and tables.
Brown’s campus has been on lockdown, and Providence officials asked students and residents to shelter in place and reach out to the police with any information.
Officials released a video of the suspect, a male possibly aged in his 30s and dressed in black, who has not yet been identified.
President Donald Trump and other officials have been briefed on the shooting and are monitoring it for updates.

Rhode Island governor says security review will be conducted in the wake of the shooting
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee told CNN that state authorities would conduct a review of Brown University campus buildings to make sure they are safe enough for students. He said that review would occur some time after the active situation is under control.
“Everything needs to be looked at on a daily basis and we do that, and we prepare for emergencies,” McKee said. “This is no exception… Until we actually know more, it’s difficult to make comment in terms of whether the situation was as safe as it should be, but we’ll follow up.”

A masked gunman sparked chaos on the Brown University campus on Saturday evening after opening fire on a classroom of students preparing for a final exam, killing two people and injuring at least nine others.
The horror shooting triggered an urgent manhunt that plunged the Providence, Rhode Island community into lockdown overnight, as terrified students were made to shelter in place for hours.
Over 400 armed law enforcement agents including the FBI and ATF were deployed to the ongoing search, with authorities stressing that ‘every minute counts’ in tracking down the at-large killer.
The shooting unfolded inside the campus’ engineering building at 4:22pm local time, and hours later surveillance footage was released showing the suspect fleeing the scene after unleashing a barrage of bullets on students.
The footage did not reveal the shooter’s face, but showed the stocky suspect fully outfitted in dark clothing and what appeared to be a bomber jacket with black boots, a beanie and gloves.
At a press conference Saturday evening, officials said they believe the gunman was in his 30s, and may have been wearing a dark camouflage mask during the horrific episode.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, however Brown University President Christina Paxson said all of the victims were students at the university. Six survivors are in stable condition, one in critical condition, and one sustained minor injuries.
During the chaotic aftermath of the shooting, officials released conflicting reports that a suspect had been arrested and a secondary attack occurred blocks away – sparking confusion before both reports were later walked back by authorities.

The first reports of shots fired were issued at 4:22pm local time inside the Barus and Holley Engineering Building, where students had gathered to prepare for final exams.
Police arrived minutes later and a huge law enforcement response descended on the scene, but by the time officers swept the building the suspect had escaped onto the adjacent Hope Street.
It was during this getaway that investigators captured the chilling surveillance footage showing the suspect walking briskly away from the carnage left behind.
Chaos overwhelmed the campus as students barricaded doors and desperately texted loved ones, with the campus issuing an emergency alert warning anyone in the area to ‘RUN, HIDE, FIGHT’ if they encounter the killer.
Social media was swept with images from terrified students and faculty, showing desks, chairs and possessions pushed up against doors.
Timothy O’Hara, the deputy Providence police chief, issued a desperate plea for answers from the public as cops released the footage, which did not show the suspect’s face and offered little detail on his identity.
‘If anybody should recognize this person in any way – seen him earlier, recognize his gait – obviously, we want to know about that,’ O’Hara said at a press conference.
A strict police perimeter was maintained across an area of several miles throughout Saturday night, and anyone in the area was urged to shelter in place while the killer remained at large.

Providence mayor Brett Smiley urged anyone with information to contact authorities, as he told reporters: ‘Every minute matters. We know every minute matters.’
Investigators have not yet recovered any weapons used in the shooting, however O’Hara said at the press conference that investigators had recovered key forensic evidence in shell casings from the scene.
A source told the Associated Press investigators believe a handgun was used by the gunman, who fired a barrage of bullets inside a single classroom during the massacre.
The shooting spree unfolded as the campus was in the midst of final exams, and Smiley said the gunman ‘walked right into’ the building because doors were left unlocked for students taking the tests.
Soon after the shooting, horrific witness accounts surfaced from students and faculty swept up in the agonizing scenes.

A huge law enforcement presence remained at the campus through Saturday night, as officials appealed to the public for help in in tracking down the at-large gunman
Brown University student Wayne McNamara said he saw two people bleeding outside his dorm room, around a block from where the shooting was reported.
‘People started running and I sprinted downstairs and back outside, took my clothes off and tried my best to stop the bleeding on the two kids by wrapping my clothes around their wounds,’ he told the Boston Globe.
McNamara said one of the people shot was ‘bleeding severely,’ while the other was ‘panting and [was] shot around his shoulder.’
Sophomore Zoe Weissman, who survived the Parkland school shooting in February 2018, described her horror at being plunged back into the chaos of a shooting.
‘I think mentally, you know, I feel like I’m 12 again. This just feels exactly like how I felt in 2018,’ she said while speaking on MS NOW. ‘But honestly, I’m really angry. I’m really angry that this is happening to me all over again, and I’m just in shock.’
Officials urged the public to come forward with any information that could track down the killer
Amid the confusion over a possible suspect in custody during the shooting, President Donald Trump quickly announced that a suspect was in custody soon after university officials did so, before the alert was soon reversed.
‘The Brown University Police reversed their previous statement — The suspect is NOT in custody,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Law enforcement sources told CNN that the conflicting reports were sparked by a ‘confrontation’ with an individual blocks away from the campus, which resulted in gunfire.
The police source said that the connection between the second incident and the suspected shooter was found to be ‘unfounded’, but the ‘confrontation’ was the reason for conflicting reports that a suspect was in custody.

In 2019, Harry and Meghan, with seven-month-old Prince Archie in tow, spent the festive period in Canada with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland and they were allegedly ‘tipped over the edge’ during the late Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas broadcast. As the monarch addressed viewers, family portraits were clearly visible on her desk, however, one was missing as there was no picture of Meghan and Harry with their then-newborn son.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were ‘furious’ at the late Queen during their last Christmas with the royals
In the book Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claimed the Sussexes believed the Royal Family were “conspiring against them” with the move, as they said the couple felt they had “long been sidelined by the institution and were not a fundamental part of its future”.
They wrote: “One didn’t have to look further than the family photos displayed during the Queen’s Speech on Christmas Day. In the Green Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace, where the Queen delivered her address, viewers glimpsed photos of the [Waleses] and their children, Charles and Camilla, Prince Philip, and a black-and-white image of George VI.

“Noticeably absent was a photo of Harry, Meghan, and their new baby, Archie.” The authors explained the Palace’s reasoning behind the snub, as royal sources insisted the photos were chosen to represent the “direct line of succession”. However, Omid and Carolyn said Harry and Meghan felt it was “yet another sign that they needed to consider their own path.”
During the 2019 Christmas period, the royal couple missed the Queen’s pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace and were not present for the traditional royal family gathering at the monarch’s private Sandringham estate on Christmas Day.
It was the second time Prince Harry has missed spending December 25 with his immediate family, the first being when he was on a tour of Afghanistan while in the Army in 2012.
In 2020, the couple decided to step back from life as senior royals and moved overseas to America, where they still live today with their children Archie and Lilibet.
