Six United Nations peacekeepers from Bangladesh were killed and eight more were wounded in a drone attack on a UN base in Sudan on Saturday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.

The drone strike hit a logistics camp of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the “unjustifiable” attack and said that such attacks “may constitute war crimes under international law.”

Sudan’s government and military blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the attack.

Army chief General Abdel Fattah Burhan called the attack a “dangerous escalation”.

The RSF in a statement on Telegram, however, refuted the allegations as “false accusations.”

Bangladesh Army says ‘situation still unstable’

Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus said in a statement that he was “deeply saddened” by the attack and urged the UN to provide emergency support to the Bangladeshi personnel.

“The government of Bangladesh will stand by the families in this difficult moment,” Yunus added.

The Bangladesh Army released a statement saying that the “situation in the area is still unstable and clashes with terrorists are ongoing.”

The statement said authorities were making every effort to provide medical care and carry out rescue operations for the injured.

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan

Sudan has been wrecked by civil war since April 2023 between the military and the RSF militias.

The war has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, killing tens of thousands of people, displacing millions, and pushing parts of the country into famine.

Efforts to end the war have so far failed.

Last month, US President Donald Trump said he would work to end the conflict after talks in Washington with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, but no concrete steps have followed.

An active shooter left at least two people dead and at least nine injured at Brown University when a suspect opened fire inside a building on campus. 

The Ivy League college in Providence, Rhode Island, remained on lockdown with the suspected gunman still at large after the shooting on Saturday evening. 

Brown University still in lockdown as students fear shooter ‘could be anywhere’

A Brown University student sheltering in place shared his concerns about the missing shooter.

Satvik Paduri, a university at the school, said he did not feel comfortable leaving his dorm room while the suspect remained on the loose.

‘Obviously, he could be anywhere,’ Paduri told NBC News.

Officials have described the suspect as a man wearing black clothing. The shooter fled out of an exit door after opening fire and had left the scene by the time police swept the building.

Paduri added: ‘It’s just horrifying that something like this has occurred so close to home.’

Students have been urged to remain sheltered in place.

The Buffalo Bills are currently in lockdown at their team hotel just a few miles away from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

The team is in town ahead of a game on Sunday afternoon against the New England Patriots.

All players and staff who have traveled are in their hotel and are safe, according to The Athletic.

A suspect has not been arrested in the shooting on Saturday evening that left two dead and at least nine injured.

Providence mayor says 400 officers looking for Brown gunman: ‘Every minute matters’

Providence mayor Brett Smiley ended the news conference, promising to provide more updates, as 400 officers searched for the gunman.

He said: ‘Every minute matters. We know every minute matters.’

Brown University shooter may be in 30s, walked away from area wearing gray mask

Authorities said the shooter was wearing dark clothing and may have been wearing a camouflaged, gray mask.

Timothy O’Hara, the deputy Providence police chief, said the video would show the suspect leaving the area of the shooting.

His face was not visible.‘If anybody should recognize this person in any way – seen him earlier, recognize his gait  – obviously, we want to know about that,’ he said at a briefing Saturday night.

The shooter was suspected to be in in his 30s, officials added.

He exited the scene on the Hope Street side of the engineering building and was seen walking toward Waterman Street.

All of the victims were believed to be students and inside the same classroom, according to officials.

Officials add another victim to injury list

In a second press conference, officials said the injury toll rose to nine after a victim sustained non-life threatening injuries after being hit by ‘fragments’ of an item that was shot.

Congressmen address ‘unimaginable tragedy’ at Brown following shooting

Rhode Island’s two congressmen have issued statements after the shooting at Brown University.

Gabe Amo, 38, called the two deaths an ‘unimaginable tragedy.’

He thanked law enforcement, first responders, and medical professionals.

‘I wish them safety as they work to apprehend whomever is responsible for this shooting,’ Amo added.

He urged lawmakers to ‘seek policies to ensure that these tragedies do not strike yet another community and no more lives are needlessly taken from us.’

Seth Magaziner, 42, lamented the tragedy and said the shooter had targeted ‘innocent members’ of Brown’s community.

‘I am deeply saddened by the shooting that occurred today on Brown University’s campus and am praying for the victims and their families,’ he said.

Second Rhode Island college goes on lockdown as search for Brown shooter continues

A nearby university urged students to also shelter in place following the shooting at Brown.

Providence College, which is about three miles from the Brown campus, said that an active shooter remained on the loose.

‘Avoid area until we get all clear,’ a statement issued by the Rhode Island school said.

‘We are strongly encouraging all students to remain in their residence halls and/or off campus houses at this time.’

Brown student says campus is in ‘chaos’ hours after mass shooting

A Brown University student described the chaotic environment at the school after the shooting.

‘There’s a lot of chaos and a lot of fear right now,’ Sophia Holman told CNN.

She was in the engineering building looking for a classroom to study in when shots rang out.

The Ivy League pupil thought it might be ‘an experiment gone wrong’ until she saw someone running past her.

That was when Holman fled the scene, ran one block east and called the police.

She added: ‘I think there’s also a lot of trust, trust that [police] were there as quickly as they were, and that the medical staff are doing everything that they can for everyone that was injured.’

A Brown University sophomore who survived the school shooting in Parkland, Florida said she was ‘angry’ after enduring yet another experience with a gunman on campus.

Zoe Weissman, 20, said her ‘brain immediately went’ to a shooting when a friend called her around 4.15pm to alert her about the shelter in place.

‘This just feels exactly like how I felt in 2018,’ she said while speaking on MS NOW. ‘But honestly, I’m really angry. I’m really angry that this is happening to me all over again, and I’m just in shock.’

She said she had been staying in her room and keeping her family updated.

‘There’s already students who survived the school shooting in Oxford in Michigan, and then went to Michigan State and survived another school shooting,’ she said.

‘This isn’t a new phenomenon, and we’re going to get to a point where there’s people like myself who survived two of these.’

Weissman added that ‘no one is safe’ from shootings until US lawmakers take action.

Senator from Rhode Island says ‘heart breaks’ over shooting while warning to ‘heed only official updates’

Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse extended prayers for victims and families of the Brown University shooting.

‘My heart breaks for the students who were looking forward to a holiday break and instead are dealing with another horrifying mass shooting, this time in our own Providence community,’ he wrote on X.

Whitehouse thanked first responders: ‘They put themselves in harm’s way to protect all of us.’

He urged locals to ‘heed only official updates’ from Brown and local police, as the suspect remained on the loose.

Handgun used in Brown University shooting: Police yet to recover weapon

The weapon used in the Brown University was a handgun, according to a law enforcement official cited by the Associated Press.

Two people were dead and at least nine were injured after a suspect opened fire inside an engineering building on campus Saturday.

The college in Providence, Rhode Island, remained on lockdown.

Authorities said the weapon has not yet been recovered.

Brown student describes harrowing scene outside dorm room

A Brown University student recalled seeing two people bleeding outside his dorm room, about a block from where the shooting was reported.

Wayne McNamara said he stopped at the scene to help.

‘People started running and I sprinted downstairs and back outside, took my clothes off and tried my best to stop the bleeding on the two kids by wrapping my clothes around their wounds,’ he told the Boston Globe.

McNamara said one of the people shot was ‘bleeding severely,’ while the other was ‘panting and [was] shot around his shoulder.’

A teenage girl has tragically died after falling from a cliff while trying to take a photograph on the Sunshine Coast.

The 17-year-old, who has not been formerly named, was reportedly visiting the lookout spot on Queen of Colonies Parade in Moffat Beach with her family when tragedy stuck. She slipped and fell around 30 metres to her death.

Queensland Police were called to the scene at around 6.40pm last night. While waiting for police at the scene bystanders and paramedics flocked to help the girl; however, despite their best efforts she died at the scene due to serious head injuries sustained in the fall.

Another woman reportedly suffered minor injuries while attempting to help the teenager.

Emergency services have warned people against getting too close to the cliif edge. Ryan Dubyk from Queensland’s Fire and Rescue told 9News people should “just stay back’ from the fences when visiting lookouts. Especially this time of year, but throughout the whole year, just please respect the barriers that are put in place. Just stay back.”

Authorities say the lookout, which offers sweeping views of Moffat Beach and the Coral Sea, is a popular spot for tourists and locals.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said: “A report will be prepared for the coroner following the sudden death of a teenage girl at Moffat Beach last night, 13 December.

“Emergency services were called around 6.40pm following reports a 17-year-old girl had fallen from a cliff. Police assisted in locating the girl who sustained critical injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. A second woman sustained a minor injury prior to the arrival of emergency services while attempting to provide assistance.”

Donald Trump has said the US “will retaliate” after three Americans were killed in a suspected Islamic State attack in Syria.

Two US service members and one civilian died and three other people were injured in an ambush on Saturday by a lone IS – also often called ISIS in Syria and Iraq – gunman, according to the he US military’s Central Command.

The attack on US troops in Syria is the first to inflict fatalities since the fall of President Bashar Assad a year ago.

“This is an ISIS attack,” the US president told reporters at the White House before leaving for the Army-Navy football game in Baltimore.

He paid condolences to the three people killed and said the three others who were wounded “seem to be doing pretty well”.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Mr Trump said “there will be very serious retaliation”.

The shooting took place near historic Palmyra, according to the state-run SANA news agency, and the casualties were taken by helicopter to the al Tanf garrison near the border with Iraq and Jordan.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacker was a member of the Syrian security force.

Syria’s Interior Ministry spokesman Nour al Din al Baba said authorities are looking into whether the gunman was an IS member or only carried its extreme ideology, and denied reports suggesting he was a security member.

Central Command earlier said in a post on X that the gunman was killed, while the identities of the service members killed wouldn’t be released until 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified.

Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell said the civilian killed in the attack was a US interpreter.

US defence secretary Pete Hegseth posted on X: “Let it be known, if you target Americans – anywhere in the world – you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you.”

The US has hundreds of troops deployed in eastern Syria as part of a coalition fighting IS.

The group was defeated on the battlefield in Syria in 2019 but the UN says the group still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq, and its sleeper cells still carry out deadly attacks.

Syria’s interim president, Ahmad al Sharaa, made a historic visit to Washington DC last month as Syria signed a political cooperation agreement with the US-led coalition against IS.

“This was an ISIS attack against the US, and Syria, in a very dangerous part of Syria, that is not fully controlled by them,” Mr Trump said in his social media post, adding that Mr al Sharaa was “extremely angry and disturbed”.

• Two people were killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on the Russian city of Saratov, regional Governor Roman Busargin said in a statement on Telegram. An unspecified number of people were also injured in the attack.
• Russia’s Ministry of Defence said it hit Ukrainian industrial and energy facilities with hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, in what it called a retaliatory attack for Ukrainian strikes on “civilian targets” in Russia.
• Ukraine’s southern port city of Odesa and the surrounding region have suffered major blackouts after a large overnight Russian attack on the power grid left more than a million households without power.
• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia’s overnight attack on Ukraine included more than 450 drones and 30 missiles.
• Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described the attack as one of the war’s largest assaults on Odesa, where supplies of electricity and water had been knocked out. She said supplies of non-drinking water were being brought to areas of the city.
• Ukraine’s power grid operator said a “significant number” of households were without power in the southern regions of Odesa and Mykolaiv, and that the Ukrainian-controlled part of the front-line Kherson region was totally without power.
• Ukraine’s navy has accused Russia of using a drone to deliberately attack the civilian Turkish vessel Viva, which was carrying sunflower oil to Egypt, a day after Moscow hit two Ukrainian ports. None of the 11 Turkish nationals onboard the ship was hurt, and the vessel continued its journey to Egypt.
• Earlier, it was also reported that three Turkish vessels were damaged in a separate attack.
• Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant temporarily lost all offsite power overnight for the 12th time during the conflict, due to military activity affecting the electrical grid, according to Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Both power lines are now reconnected, the IAEA said.

US-led negotiations

• Zelenskyy said he would meet US and European representatives in Berlin to discuss the “fundamentals of peace”. He added that Ukraine needed a “dignified” peace and a guarantee that Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of his country in 2022, would not attack again.
• US envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will meet Zelenskyy and European leaders in Berlin on Sunday and Monday, a US official briefed on the matter said.
• French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz were also expected to attend the Berlin meeting, The Wall Street Journal reported.
• Europeans and Ukrainians are asking the US to provide them with “security guarantees” before any territorial negotiations in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine, the French presidency said.
• British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have discussed work on US-led peace proposals for Ukraine and efforts to use frozen Russian sovereign assets to provide funds for Kyiv, a Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement.
• Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, fresh from a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Turkmenistan, said he hopes to discuss a Ukraine-Russia peace plan with Trump, adding that “peace is not far away”.

Politics and diplomacy

• Ukraine received 114 prisoners released by Belarus, including citizens accused of working for Ukrainian intelligence and Belarusian political prisoners, according to Kyiv’s POW coordination centre. The centre posted photos appearing to show the released captives boarding a bus, with some of them smiling and embracing.
• Zelenskyy spoke to Belarusian prisoner Maria Kalesnikava after her release, presidential aide Dmytro Lytvyn told reporters. Lytvyn told reporters that military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov was present when the prisoners released by Belarus were received.
• North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a welcoming ceremony for an army engineering unit that returned home after carrying out duties in Russia, North Korea’s KCNA news agency reported. At the event, Kim praised officers and soldiers for their “heroic” conduct during their 120-day overseas deployment.
• Russia has sentenced top International Criminal Court (ICC) judges and its chief prosecutor Karim Khan to jail, in retaliation for the court’s 2023 decision to issue an arrest warrant for Putin over alleged war crimes during the Ukraine war.

Providence’s deputy chief of police Timothy O’Hara has said that a weapon has not been found and searches for the suspect are ongoing.

O’Hara says he is working the federal agencies in the manhunt, but there remain a lot of unanswered questions.

The suspect remains at large, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley has said, adding that the situation is “evolving” as he addresses the media. The shelter in place order remains in place.

Another person has been delcared injured in the attack, Smiley has said. The injuries are not life threatening, but they are now the ninth person known to have been injured.

Zohran Mamdani, New York’s mayor-elect, has noted that tomorrow – 14 December – is the anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting, which saw 20 children and six adults killed at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012.

“We find ourselves in mourning once again,” Mamdani said.

The epidemic of gun violence stretches across America. We reckon with it when we step into our houses of worship and out onto our streets, when we drop our children off at kindergarten and when we fear if those children, now grown, will be safe on campus.”

• University officials initially told students and staff that a suspect was in custody, before later saying that was not the case and that police were still searching for a suspect or suspects. The mayor said a person preliminarily thought to be involved was detained but was later determined to have no involvement.

• President Donald Trump told reporters that he had been briefed on the shooting and “all we can do right now is pray for the victims.” Earlier he claimed a suspect was in custody before rowing back on that statement and confirming the shooter was still at large.

• The shooting occurred in the Barus + Holley building, a seven-story complex that houses the School of Engineering and physics department. According to the university’s website, the building includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and offices. Brown, one of the America’s most prestigious colleges, has roughly 7,300 undergraduates and more than 3,000 graduate students.

The manhunt for the shooter has been complicated by large crowds in downtown Providence, local media are reporting, with a large number of holiday shoppers and thousands of people attending concerts.

Federal law enforcement and police from surrounding cities and towns were assisting in the search.

The Providence Place mall has reportedly been closed due to the ongoing search, according to an employee from the centre who spoke to local media.

“Oh my God. I think she was nervous to work with me, but I tried to…” Theroux began, jokingly, before adding, “No, she was fabulous.”

He continued, “It goes without saying she’s a professional, but after a few minutes of nerves, you immediately realize, ‘Oh, she’s just a really quality actress that I’m getting to work with.’ That was really thrilling.”

In October, The Leftovers alum shared Instagram photos from his time in Italy with wife Nicole Brydon Bloom for filming of The Devil Wears Prada 2.

In the photos, the couple could be seen alongside Theroux’s costars Stanley Tucci, Anne Hathaway, B.J. Novak, Simone Ashley and Emily Blunt. 

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set for a May 1, 2026, release date.

Aside from The Devil Wears Prada 2, Theroux can also be seen in the upcoming second season of Prime Video’s post-apocalyptic drama series Fallout, which is based on the video game of the same name. 

Fallout season 2 will premiere on Prime Video on Dec. 17.

A drill rapper jailed for 24 years over multiple shootings has become a ‘prison influencer’ – amassing more than 13,000 Instagram followers with his brazen karaoke videos in his cell.

Richard Burnett, 30, sings with a microphone and speaker inside a high-security prison along with half a dozen criminals, before sharing the bizarre clips online.

In one song, the gang member reinvents the lyrics of Cyndi Lauper’s hit Girls Just Want To Have Fun to include references to how he was caught attacking a rival gang.

Burnett, who goes by his rap name Glockamoley, croons: ‘Whispered to my friend let’s go ride, we’re trying to pack [kill] someone tonight.’

He continues: ‘My phone rings in the middle of a splashing [stabbing]… why did you step [commit crime] with your phone?

‘…That’s how we all got caught.’

The video, featuring a number of other criminals, then sees the performers hold up plastic phones for the chorus, which carries their lyrics: ‘Leave your phone, leave your phones at home.’

The post, shared on Sunday, leads viewers to links to Glockamoley’s Spotify and iTunes store pages, meaning the crook is able to make money from behind bars.

Burnett’s page, which claims to be run by ‘management’, features 30 videos – many of which have clearly been recorded inside his supposedly high-security cell.

Another clip sees the gangster change the lyrics of Luther Vandross’s Never Too Much to include references to shootings.

His long series of clips has raised questions over how the inmate is able to share the videos with seeming impunity.

Burnett was jailed in 2022 over a series of gang shootings in Nottingham.

He was convicted of conspiracy to wound with intent, conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and three counts of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Before he was sentenced, the rapper released a series of drill music videos where he gloated of his crimes.

It comes after a murderer who gloated of his crimes on Instagram in vile rap videos had his account taken down after they were revealed by the Daily Mail.

He was jailed for a minimum of 27 years over the 2021 attack that year along with three others for their roles in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

But unrepentant Meanley amassed almost 10,000 followers on Instagram for his glorification of his crimes using self-made rap music videos.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson told the Daily Mail: ‘This behaviour is unacceptable. We immediately requested removal of these posts and we are investigating how this was able to happen.

‘We are investing £40 million in new security measures to clamp down on illicit items and those who break prison rules can face extra time behind bars.’

While usually harmless, persistent itchy feet can sometimes indicate underlying health conditions that require medical attention

Brits have been advised to take notice of an itchy sensation affecting their feet. This particular symptom, particularly when accompanied by additional signs, warrants a consultation with a healthcare professional.

Occasional itchy skin is quite common. Numerous benign causes can cause this sensation, including cold dry weather or insect bites.

However, continuous itchiness that doesn’t go away could suggest something more serious. Experts at Healthline have emphasised that the feet are particularly susceptible to developing such irritation.

They warned that itchy feet could point towards various health conditions, including diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disorders.

Liver disease

Whether caused by excessive alcohol intake or a build-up of fat in the liver, liver disease represents a grave condition that may become fatal without appropriate intervention. The Liver Foundation identified itching as one symptom of liver disease.

“You might itch anywhere on your body, but it’s most common on the arms and legs, or the palms of your hands or soles of your feet,” it said. “Some people itch all over. Itching in liver disease can vary from mild to exhausting.

“If your itching is caused by a liver problem, there won’t be a skin rash or an insect bite. But constant scratching can damage the skin. The more severe the disease, the worse the itching gets.

“You might notice it’s worse in heat, including a hot bath, at night, or when you wear certain clothes.”

The exact cause of itching linked to liver disease remains somewhat mysterious, although it has been associated with several factors, including the build-up of bile salts in the blood and changes to other blood components such as histamine, serotonin, female hormones and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) triggered by the illness.

Further signs of liver disease to be aware of include:

• Feeling constantly tired and weak
• Loss of appetite – possibly leading to weight loss
• Reduced sex drive
• Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
• Feeling or being sick

Diabetes

Diabetes.co.uk warns that itching which affects the feet alongside legs and ankles is “common” among those with diabetes. The organisation explains: “Itchy skin can be a sign of diabetes, particularly if other diabetes symptoms are also present.

“High blood sugar levels over a prolonged period of time is one cause of itchy skin. In some cases, itchy skin may be caused by complications of diabetes such as nerve damage or kidney disease.

“Itching of the feet, legs or ankles is a common complaint in people with diabetes that may occur as a result of a period of too high sugar levels.”

Other key symptoms of diabetes to look out for include:

• Experiencing excessive thirst
• Urinating more frequently than usual, particularly during the night
• Feeling extremely tired
• Loss of weight and muscle bulk
• Itching around the genital area, or recurrent thrush infections
• Vision problems

Kidney disease

Similar to diabetes, itching is “very common” among those afflicted with kidney disease. Kidney Care UK states that this symptom affects about half of people with advanced kidney disease and “almost everyone” experiencing kidney failure who undergoes dialysis or conservative treatment.

“You may find that you get itchier as your kidney function gets worse,” the organisation says. For those suffering from kidney disease, itching might be triggered or exacerbated by dry skin, high temperatures, inadequate dialysis, and increased calcium levels in the blood.

Additional symptoms of kidney disease include:

• Unexplained weight loss and decreased appetite
• Swelling in ankles, feet or hands – due to fluid build-up (oedema)
• Shortness of breath
• Tiredness
• Blood present in your urine
• Increased frequency of urination – especially during the night
• Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
• Muscle cramps
• Nausea
• Persistent headaches
• Sexual dysfunction in men

If you notice any of these warning signs, it’s crucial to seek medical advice from your doctor.
