Intelligence agencies aren’t ‘all knowing’ says Burke

Tony Burke says the 24-year-old alleged shooter, Naveed Akram, is still in a coma, but couldn’t provide any more details on the man or the status of the investigation. His father, the 50-year-old alleged shooter was shot dead by police.

The government is facing questions over why Asio, Australia’s spy agency, stopped monitoring Akram.

Speaking to ABC News Breakfast, the home affairs minister says some of the criticism of the intelligence agencies “isn’t right”.

Our intelligence agencies can only work with what they have and work with what they know. They will never be all seeing and all knowing … now in hindsight, people look back, and obviously ASIO always reviews its processes and always looks back to make sure that things are getting stronger and stronger …

There was none of the evidence more than half a decade ago that this person was going to turn out the way that they did.”

Sombre scenes at Bondi

The crowd of mourners at Bondi Pavilion continues to be quiet and sombre. There is a diverse array of people here, from dog walkers to babies in strollers and elderly couples in running gear.

A Jewish group is handing out free sufganiyot – a traditional Jewish doughnut popular during Hanukkah – and leading prayers. There are many tears and many hugs.

Every major news station is broadcasting from the grassy hill this morning, and has been visited by the opposition leader, Sussan Ley, and the NSW Liberal leader, Kelly Sloane. The CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Alex Rivkin, is also here.

PM says one alleged gunman was interviewed by Asio in 2019 but was not at that time a ‘person of interest’

Albanese said Naveed Akram – one of two alleged gunmen – and his family and acquaintances were interviewed by Asio while under investigation in 2019, but he was “not seen at that time to be a person of interest”.

“He was drawn to their attention because of his association with others. Two of the people he was associated with were charged and went to jail,” Albanese told ABC Radio Sydney.

“Now, whether he was radicalised further after that, what the circumstances are, that’s the subject of further investigation.”

National cabinet agrees gun licences will not be issued in perpetuity

The home affairs minister, Tony Burke, says the government has already acted on a series of recommendations to combat antisemitism by the government’s special envoy, Jillian Segal, including to make doxxing illegal, and banning Nazi symbols.

Things like making doxing illegal, which we’ve done, you’ll see in the report wanting to strengthen our laws on hate crimes. We’ve now got the toughest laws at we’ve ever had in fuelling violence.

Speaking to the Today show this morning, Burke is facing questions on how the 50-year-old father was able to keep a gun license when his 24-year-old son had been monitored by spy agency Asio.

Burke says he acknowledges security checks can’t be “one and done”. Last night’s national cabinet meeting agreed gun licenses would no longer be issued in perpetuity. Burke says:

There’s a separate issue as to whether or not within family groups how how this is looked at. There is another issue which national cabinet dealt with yesterday about once a gun license is issued, how regularly it needs to be renewed. These licences should not be something where security checks are done at the start and then not revisited it.

Australia must combat extremism while ‘learning how to disagree well’, Spender says

People are wrapping their arms around each other, Spender says, but at the same time, the broader response needs to go beyond care and sympathy.

How do we as a country do whatever we can to prevent this happening again? And that is combating antisemitism and combating extremism.

I don’t think this reflects Australia – these were Islamic extremists, and the person who did most to save people was a Muslim man. He is a better reflection of our country, but we do have extreme elements here, and that creates fear. That said, there is more prevalent antisemitism now than I’ve ever seen it. Most of it is nowhere near the extremism we saw on the weekend but it does mean the Jewish community feels very isolated.

You have to combat the extremism which I think led to the physical attack but we also have the question of how to make sure we as a country can disagree well, but we still belong.

The local member for Wentworth, Allegra Spender, pays her respects

Among those paying their respects at Bondi Pavilion on Tuesday morning is the local member for Wentworth, Allegra Spender.

Spender was seen wrapping her arms around a Rabbi and hugging community members who have come down to lay flowers.

Like “so many people”, Spender was at Bondi on Sunday afternoon until about 5pm with her children in the waves. She was celebrating a family Christmas dinner in Bronte when news of the attack broke.

She tells Guardian Australia, “everybody is really struggling”.

The community is completely devastated and it’s still incredibly hard to comprehend. People coming like they are today to show their respect is really, really important … those shows of support. Many people I know lit candles for Hanukah tonight … those are the things that really matter.

PM outlines potential gun reforms in wake of Bondi terror attack

Asked about gun reforms, the PM said the government was going to look at limiting the amount of guns one person can own, the type of guns people can own and only allowing citizens to be able to own guns.

He said many jurisdictions don’t use a digital system and don’t talk to each other about gun ownership:

Some state governments still have paper processes for the registration of firearms, so it’s impossible to check if you don’t have a digitised system. And so we’re accelerating that $100m and $60m program. More than $100m has been provided to states and territories, which is where guns are registered, to enable them to digitise their system.

He said the juristictons need to work together:

The system is only as strong as its weakest link, and if you have New South Wales laws tightened, but no changes were made in all of the other states… [it won’t work] … which is why I brought together the national cabinet.

Albanese defends antisemitism record

The PM has been asked if his government has done enough to combat antisemitism:

It would appear that this was motivated by Islamic State ideology, the ideology that has been around for more than a decade, which led to this ideology of hate, and, in this case, preparedness to engage in mass murder.

We are working as hard as we can. Antisemitism, tragically, has been around for a long period of time. We have been the first government to legislate for hate symbols, for Nazi symbols, for hate speech. We have established an envoy on antisemitism. We have appointed a national ombudsman to look after those issues.

We have a program as well into schools that has been the first one that’s been established as a result of those recommendations, we have been working as hard as we can, engaging with Jewish community leaders.

PM says Five Eyes network being brought into Bondi shooting investigation

The PM has just been speaking on ABC Sydney:

This was a meticulous, calculated, cold-blooded attack.

Now the investigations will, of course, continue. Those investigations are being led by New South Wales police, but through the joint counterterrorism team. That will involve not just the Australian Federal Police, but also our agencies Asio, who look after domestic security and ASIS, who look after our international issues, and we are certainly reaching out to Five Eyes partners, our security partners internationally as well.

Those investigations will continue, and will continue to inform Australians as those investigations proceed.

Opposition leader continues attacks on Labor’s handling of antisemitism

The opposition leader, Sussan Ley, has now joined Sunrise, and says the government failed by not addressing antisemitism in the community.

She reiterates that the government should implement the recommendations from special envoy on antisemitism Jillian Segal’s report, and says that the opposition will offer bipartisan support to increase resourcing for security agencies.

Segal said yesterday that her 13 recommendations – handed to the government in July – focus on education, and cracking down on education, arts and cultural institutions that fail to address antisemitism.

Ley claims to Sunrise the government hasn’t acted on antisemitism as a priority.

This scourge of antisemitism that is talked about needs to be acted on in a way across government and given the priority that, sadly, it hasn’t had.

I hear from young women at university about what they have experienced on-campus, and I know there’s been nothing coming from this … to actually [hold] universities to account.

Dozens of mourners have gathered at the Bondi Pavilion on Tuesday morning to pay their respects to the victims of Sunday night’s terrorist attack.

Some wrap their arms around each other, whilst others carry flowers to lay at an ever-growing memorial. A woman still in her bathers and towel stares at the display with tears flowing down her cheeks. Many stand arms crossed in reflective silence.

The Australian and Israeli flags are hung at the pavilion’s gates.

A portion of Campbell Parade is still cut off to traffic with police tape hung by strewn electric bicycles. There is still a large police presence on the ground, as well as council vehicles sweeping the streets.

Multifaith coalition reiterates solidarity with Jewish community in joint statement

There was a meeting last night between religious leaders from the city’s largest denominations, convened by the state minister for multiculturalism.

A statement from the New South Wales (NSW) Faith Affairs Council said they “expressed their deepest sympathies for the people killed in the horrific attack” and “reiterated their solidarity with the Jewish community”.

Jewish clergy leaders addressed the meeting which included Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu faith leaders, with one senior rabbi saying communities could show support by lighting a Hanukah candle or engaging in charity.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack on Sunday, the council had declared:

We will not let hatred and violence divide us. Across all our cultures and faiths, will stand united in sympathy, compassion and solidarity.”

Minister Kamper said: “Australians of all faiths must work together, unambiguously, to restore faith in NSW’s multiculturalism.”

Sydney in particular is a highly multicultural city, viewed by residents as largely harmonious and peaceful – where nearly 40% of the population was born overseas and more than a third of people speak a language other than English at home.

Ley says gun law investigations ‘ongoing’

Yesterday, Ley said it was too early to talk about gun laws. Asked about it now, she said:

Following the national cabinet, we’ll take a sensible, proportionate examination of the proposals, of course we would. And Australians are rightly saying this doesn’t make sense.

But that investigation is ongoing, and we’ll let it take its course. Important though that is, we cannot take a step away from the issue that is underpinning so much of the pain here in the community. And that’s antisemitism.

Opposition leader continues attacks on government over alleged lack of action on antisemitism

Sussan Ley is being interviewed by ABC at Bondi. She says the government needs to do more about antisemitism.

This has come against a backdrop of anger and despair and disappointment. Because, for every day, for the last two years, the lives of Jewish Australians have been made harder by the rising tide of antisemitism.

And that’s what so many spoke to me about yesterday. That they’ve heard a lot of words, they want to see action.

Dreyfus backs stricter gun laws

Asked about gun laws, Dreyfus said there should be stricter regulations on how many guns people could have and only allowing citizens to own them.

People having six guns, possibly rapid firing, in their position, is more than anyone could want, and so for the national cabinet to meet yesterday and say right away, we think we should require citizenship to get a gun license, and we think there should be more limitations on the number of guns.

They seem like obvious reforms.

Health minister says 26 people still hospitalised, including children

There are still 26 people in hospital who were injured in the Bondi terror attack, the NSW health minister, Ryan Park, has told Nine’s Today program.

A dozen of them were still in critical condition and “will have ongoing surgery for devastating injuries”, Park said.

A number of children were in a serious condition, Park confirmed.

He commended hospital clinicians and staff who have “no doubt saved lives”.

The couple were found dead in their home with multiple stab wounds, according to the BBC’s US partner CBS News

A son of film director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner has been arrested and booked on suspicion of murder after the couple were found dead in their Los Angeles home.

The Los Angeles Police Department said on Monday that Nick Reiner, 32, had been arrested and that he was in custody with no bail.

The deceased couple’s 28-year-old daughter, Romy, found her parents in their home with multiple stab wounds on Sunday, sources told the BBC’s US partner CBS News.

Rob Reiner is known for directing several iconic films in a variety of genres, including When Harry Met Sally, This is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, Misery and A Few Good Men.

Emergency services were called to provide medical aid at the Reiners’ Brentwood, California, home at around 15:38 local time (23:38 GMT) on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said two people – later identified as Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 68 – were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Nick Reiner was arrested several hours later, at about 21:15 local time on Sunday. Investigators have not publicly outlined a motive and said the investigation remains ongoing.

Nick Reiner has spoken publicly about his struggles with addiction and homelessness. His experiences formed the basis of the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he made with his father in 2015.

The family’s home is in Brentwood, a wealthy celebrity enclave full of large mansions, boutique shops and restaurants. On Monday morning, a security guard stood outside the home as media gathered outside the front gate.

Rob Reiner, the son of comedy great Carl Reiner, began his career in the 1960s and rose to fame playing Meathead in the TV sitcom All in The Family.

He cemented his success with the cult mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, which he directed and starred in.

Reiner was married to Laverne & Shirley actress Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and is the adoptive father to Marshall’s daughter, actress Tracy Reiner.

He married Michele Reiner in 1989, who he said he met during the making of the romantic comedy-drama film When Harry Met Sally. The couple have three children together.

Michele Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer, and the founder of Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company.

Rob Reiner was also known for his outspoken political activism and support for Democratic candidates.

In a post calling their deaths “very sad”, President Donald Trump criticised Reiner, saying that they “reportedly” died “due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction” with “Trump Derangement Syndrome”.

“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump,” the president wrote.

It is not clear what reports the president was referring to, and while the investigation is being treated as a homicide, police have yet to comment on any possible motive.

The president and his allies often used the term Trump Derangement Syndrome in reference to those who are critical of him. Reiner was a vocal critic of Trump’s.

Several Republicans criticised Trump over the post, including former ally Marjorie Taylor Greene, who said the deaths were a “family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies”.

“Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder,” she said.

Trump’s post was also met with anger by some of the Reiners’ friends.

In a post on X, Maria Shriver, the former first lady of California and longtime friend of the Reiners, said the couple were “devoted parents”.

“They deeply loved all their children and they never gave up trying to care for them,” she said.

Sir Elton John, who made an appearance in this year’s Spinal Tap sequel, said: “I am in disbelief at today’s news of Rob and Michele.

“They were two of the most beautiful people I’d ever met and they deserved better.”

Fellow actor John Cusack, who appeared in Reiner’s 1985 film The Sure Thing, called him “a great man”, while Elijah Wood, who starred in 1994’s North, said he was “horrified” by the couple’s deaths.

Australian leaders on Monday promised to strengthen the country’s already restrictive gun laws in the wake of the weekend mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach that left 15 victims dead.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced several proposed actions, including one to limit the number of guns someone can own and a review of licenses held over time. 

“The government is prepared to take whatever action is necessary. Included in that is the need for tougher gun laws,” he said after meeting with his National Cabinet. 

“If we need to toughen these up, if there’s anything we can do, I’m certainly up for it,” he added.

Australia already has strict gun control laws, which heavily restricted civilian firearm ownership after a gunman killed 35 people in Tasmania in 1996.

Among other proposed actions include limiting the number of firearms any one person can have, requiring Australian citizenship as a condition for obtaining a firearms license and limiting open-ended firearms licensing and the types of guns that are legal.

Sunday’s shooting came during a Hanukkah celebration as thousands of people gathered at Bondi Beach, a popular local and tourist destination. The event – the Chanukah by the Sea – celebrated the start of the Jewish holiday.

Albanese called the shooting “a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah.” 

Two gunmen, a 50-year-old father who died at the scene, and his 24-year-old son, opened fire, killed 15 people. Those killed range in age from 10 to 87, authorities said. Both gunmen were shot by police. The son is recovering in a hospital.

At least 38 other people are being treated in hospitals. Among those is a man captured on video appearing to tackle and disarm one apparent assailant, before pointing the man’s weapon at him, then setting the gun on the ground.

The man was identified by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke as Ahmed al Ahmed. The 42-year-old fruit shop owner and father of two was shot in the shoulder.

Al Ahmed’s family said he migrated from Syria in 2006, and underwent surgery on Monday. His parents recently moved to Australia. They said he had a background in the Syrian security forces.

“My son has always been brave. He helps people. He’s like that,” his mother, Malakeh Hasan al Ahmed, told Australian Broadcasting Corp. through an interpreter.

The son of Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner is in custody after the couple was found dead at their Los Angeles home Sunday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Nick Reiner, 32, was booked into the LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center, sheriff’s department records show.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed that Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested and “booked for murder” and is being held on $4 million bail at the LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center, sheriff’s department records show. Nick, who stands at six feet three inches and weighs 250 pounds, was arrested at 9:15 p.m. Sunday and booked into the jail at 5:05 a.m.

It was previously reported that investigators were interviewing a family member Sunday evening regarding the deaths, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told multiple news outlets. Authorities are investigating the deaths as apparent homicides.

There was no sign of forced entry at the Reiners’ sprawling Brentwood home and the couple had injuries consistent with being stabbed, sources told the Los Angeles Times. The city’s fire department said the bodies of a 68-year-old woman and a 78-year-old man were discovered in a property on Chadbourne Avenue.

TMZ reported that the couple’s throats were “slit” following an argument at the home.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a family spokesperson said in a statement. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

Actors Billy Crystal and Larry David were spotted at the home Sunday night, a neighbor told ABC7, adding that Crystal “looked like he was about to cry.”

Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said the death investigation was being handled by the LAPD’s robbery homicide division, and would “continue over the coming days.”

Paramedics were dispatched to the residence at roughly 3:30 p.m. Sunday, and Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived minutes later for an “ambulance death investigation.”

A sizable police presence was observed outside the home Sunday evening. Neighbors told NBC News that Reiner and his wife lived together in the home, and property records confirmed that they own the property.

Their middle son, Nick, was taken into custody Sunday night and booked into jail on Monday.

The 32-year-old, who has been open about his struggles with addiction, co-wrote the 2015 film “Being Charlie.” The movie, directed by his father, was inspired by his own experiences with drug addiction, rehab, and homelessness.

“I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas,” he has said. “I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.”

After he became sober, he told People in 2016: “I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family.”

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Independent.

Reiner was one of the most prolific directors in Hollywood, and his work included some of the most memorable movies of the 1980s and ’90s, including “This is Spinal Tap,” “A Few Good Men,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Princess Bride.”

Tributes have been paid to Reiner, who was an American actor, writer and liberal activist as well as a director. His films included “A Few Good Men” and “Misery.”

He first rose to prominence after playing Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the CBS series “All in the Family,” a role that garnered him multiple Emmy Awards.

The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Reiner was married to photographer Michele since 1989. The two met while he was directing When Harry Met Sally and had three children together, Jake, Nick, and Romy.

Reiner was previously married to actor-director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. He adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner died in 2020 at age 98 and Marshall died in 2018.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement that it was “a devastating loss for our city and our country.”

“Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” she said, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.

John Stamos is mourning the loss of two Hollywood legends.

On Monday, Dec. 15, the actor shared a tribute to his longtime friend and former General Hospital costar Anthony Geary, while also honoring Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

All three died on Sunday, Dec. 14. Geary and Rob were both 78, while Michele was 65. Geary’s husband Claudio Gama told TV Insider the actor died from complications following an operation. Rob and Michele, meanwhile, were found dead in their L.A. home, and their son Nick, 32, has been arrested for their murder.

In Stamos’ post, he wrote that he is “deeply saddened” by Geary’s death and reflected on what’s been a heavy 24 hours in Hollywood.

“Coming on the heels of the tragic deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, whom I admired immensely — this feels like a heartbreaking moment for so many of us who grew up watching and learning from these giants of our craft,” Stamos wrote.

In the rest of Stamos’ post, he reflected on the profound impact Geary had on his career. He recalled the first day he met the actor when he was 19 on his first job, General Hospital.

“Tony could not have been kinder or more welcoming. At that age, everything feels big. He made it feel safe,” Stamos wrote. “I was mesmerized by his acting. I would stay after my scenes were finished just to watch him work — not because I had to, but because I wanted to learn. Watching Tony was like watching someone rewrite the rules in real time.”

Calling Geary “one of a kind,” Stamos said the actor “changed the face of daytime television” and “changed my life.”

“What always stood out to me was how real he was. He never fell into the traps or tricks that can happen when you’re doing the volume needed for an hour show every day. He attacked every character and every script with honesty, intelligence, and fearlessness. There was no autopilot with Tony — ever.”

Geary supported Stamos when he got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009, which the Full House star said “meant the world to me” and was emblematic of who Geary was. “He showed up — quietly and generously.”

In his post, Stamos included photos from the 2009 ceremony as well as two shots of him, Geary and Demi Moore. Stamos and Moore both joined General Hospital in 1982 and starred together on the soap for two years.

Stamos said that Geary is “part of my foundation as an actor” and “will always be part of my work” as he concluded the lengthy tribute.

“Thank you, Tony, for your brilliance, your kindness, and for setting the bar so impossibly high,” he said. “You really stood out. Rest easy, my friend.”

Geary was best known for playing Luke Spencer on General Hospital, a role he played on the soap opera from 1978 until his exit in 2015.

Part of Luke’s footprint was his relationship with Laura (Genie Francis), the other half of daytime’s biggest supercouple. When the characters wed in 1981 on the soap, it was watched by 30 million people, making it the most-watched episode in soap opera history.

Thousands of innocent motorists have been clocked for speeding due to a fault with EVERY speed camera on smart motorways across the UK, the Mail can reveal.

In a scandal which could cost the Government millions in compensation, a glitch has existed within the variable speed camera system on all smart motorways and some A-roads for four years.

Police have secretly switched off the cameras across the UK as the speeding data can no longer be relied on.

More than 36,000 speeding cases have been axed so far, with court cases and speed awareness courses cancelled by 22 police forces.

Over the weekend, ministers and police chiefs agreed a temporary fix which will enable forces to switch the variable speed cameras back on in the coming days.

The malfunction only emerged after motorists were able to show the courts dashcam footage proving their vehicle was travelling below the speed limit when they were caught.

An investigation revealed a critical time delay between a new speed limit being displayed on an electronic speed camera sign and the motorway cameras reacting to the change.

As a result of the delay, the mandatory speed limit signs and cameras are out of sync for 10 seconds.

This means a motorist may see a 50mph speed limit displayed on an overhead gantry, but the cameras recording the vehicle are still operating under a previous 40mph speed limit.

The ‘anomaly’ has resulted in over 2,600 innocent drivers being detected as speeding when they were travelling below the legal limit.

Astonishingly, the camera fault has been catching out motorists since January 2021 when a National Highways software update introduced a time lag in the interaction between the sign and the camera.

But no one managed to prove that there was an issue with the cameras until a series of similar court cases in the summer started to raise concerns within National Highways and the Department of Transport.

Analysis by the National Highways suggests that around 2,656 motorists have been wrongly clocked as speeding in 22 police force areas as a result of the error.

In total 154 cameras are affected, which comprises all of the smart motorway cameras and a small number of variable speed cameras on A-roads around the country such as the A14 Huntingdon to Cambridge.

That represents 38 per cent of the speed cameras in Britain on the country’s motorways and major A-roads.

National Highways calculate that the fault impacts around 10 per cent of 4,500 miles of motorways and major A-roads that make up the Strategic Road Network, which accounts for around 2 per cent of the total road network in England.

On average, the impacted roads have 1.5 million camera activations – or flashes – a year, with the issue affected fewer than 0.1 per cent of activations during the time period, according to officials.

A compensation scheme is now being set up for those drivers who have been wrongly fined anything between £100-£2,500, made to go on unnecessary speed awareness courses or banned from driving.

In some instances, drivers who rightly challenged the fixed penalty notice believing they were not speeding may have received a criminal conviction at court which could have affected their employment.

The error has been found to occur on smart motorway variable speed cameras known as HADECS 3, which are mounted on poles at the side monitoring up to five lanes of a motorway.

The camera units are supposed to automatically adjust to changes in the speed limit displayed on variable speed limit gantry signs in red circles.

Under the law, motorists are supposed to have a 10 second grace period to allow them to slow down when the speed limit changes.

But an investigation revealed that motorists were being given no grace period after a speed limit change and drivers were being clocked because the update had not been recognised by the camera.

On Friday night, ministers held urgent talks to try to find a long-term fix for the problem after secretly switching off the cameras nationwide.

 In the meantime, National Highways are working with police on a ‘data check’ which will identify an estimated two cases a day affected by the glitch once the cameras are switched back on.

What can YOU do next?

If you have an ‘active’ prosecution for a variable speed limit offence from the HADECS camera system, police will be getting in contact to cancel this.

This will affect motorists waiting to attend court, who may have already elected to go on a speed awareness course or elected to pay a fine and accept penalty points after being caught on a variable speed camera.

Drivers will likely already have been contacted by a police force to advise that this has been cancelled.

If you have not yet been contacted and you are affected, you do not need to do anything, police will send out correspondence in due course.

If you have historically received a variable speed limit offence from the HADECS camera system since January 2021 and you have been wrongfully prosecuted, police will be contacting those affected in due course.

Policing is working with National Highways to identify and contact those affected.

The cameras are still capable of enforcing the national 70mph speed limit on the affected motorways and police are stepping up patrols in the interim.

A spokesman said: ‘National Highways apologises to anyone affected. They will be reimbursed and have points removed from their licence where relevant. Steps will be taken to remedy any incorrect enforcement action, and anybody affected will be contacted directly.

‘National Highways has developed a data check to ensure nobody will now be prosecuted incorrectly, and are liaising with police on its implementation this week.

‘Enforcement remains in place and anybody breaking the law could face prosecution. National Highways will also be increasing other safety measures, and policing will continue to enforce speeding and other offences on our road network.’

There has been a dramatic rise in speeding cases since 2021, which experts have atttributed to the increase in cameras on smart motorways.

Official figures show there has been a 10 per cent increase in people being convicted of speeding offences and the numbers going on speed awareness courses have risen by a third from 1.39million to 1.84 million drivers in 2024.

The number of fixed penalty notices being handed out has also risen.

According to figures from the Home Office, 96 per cent of the 2.71 million drivers caught speeding in England and Wales in 2023 were detected by speed cameras. 

The scandal will yet again raise concerns about the safety of smart motorways, which are stretches of road where variable speed camera technology is used to manage traffic flow and reduce congestion.

The Daily Mail has campaigned for better safety on the controversial roads as studies have shown almost 400 miles of smart motorways in the UK which have no hard shoulder are three times more lethal to break down on than those that retain the safety lane.

National Highways Chief Executive, Nick Harris, said: ‘Safety is our number one priority and we have developed a fix for this technical anomaly to maintain the highest levels of safety on these roads and make sure no one is wrongly prosecuted.

‘All drivers should continue observing the posted speed limits as normal. Anyone who has been impacted will be contacted by the relevant police force.’

A National Police Chiefs Council spokesman said: ‘Policing is working with National Highways to identify and contact a very limited number of motorists who may have incorrectly received a speeding penalty due to an anomaly impacting the way some National Highways cameras interact with their signs and signals on some A-roads and motorways. This issue affects a limited number of motorists.

‘Policing enforces a range of offences, including speeding, on the strategic road network through a number of tactics including mobile camera deployments, roads policing patrols and average speed sites. This remains unchanged.’

Snow is set to move across Europe towards the UK on Christmas Day, weather maps show, with more freezing conditions on the way – and some areas could be blanketed

Brits could be in for a freezing Christmas this year, with unsettling conditions set to continue over the next few days.

The latest weather maps from WXCharts, which uses MetDesk data, show snow moving across Europe over the UK from the east on Christmas Day. Based on the latest predictions, some mountainous areas across Scotland, northern England and Wales, could be blanketed on December 25.

The maps show snowfall spreading around the country from the south towards the north throughout the day, arriving in Scotland in the late afternoon. The weather front could bring back memories of the famous Beast From The East in 2018, when an air mass from Siberia caused unusually heavy snowfall and bitterly cold air, with some areas dropping as low as -14C.

The Met Office hasn’t confirmed yet whether they expect snow on Christmas Day, but their long-range forecast says unsettled conditions are set to continue for a few more days. From Saturday, December 20 to Monday, December 29, rain or showers, accompanied by windy conditions, could hit the UK. The Met Office said that in the run-up to Christmas, there is “a greater chance of high pressure developing in the vicinity of the UK compared to the previous few weeks.”

The forecast reads: “Whilst the chance of impactful rain or strong winds should reduce, there may be an increasing incidence of overnight frost and fog, the latter perhaps taking its time to clear, given the time of year. A gradual reduction in temperatures seems likely, falling closer to average overall. Some cold days are possible, if or where any fog persists.”

Towards the end of December and beginning of January, Brits are likely to experience dry, settled weather, with low temperatures on the cards, forecasters said. The Met Office’s long-range forecast from Tuesday, December 30 to Tuesday, January 13 reads: “High pressure will probably be close by to the UK at the start of this period, which would maintain a fair amount of dry, settled weather.

“With this comes the potential for fog and frost, and lower temperatures overall, though nothing unusually cold is currently signalled. Towards mid-January, perhaps a greater chance of more changeable conditions re-asserting themselves, though this is rather uncertain at present.”

It comes after several weather warnings, including an amber rain warning for parts of Wales, were issued across the UK today. Heavy rain is expected in south and south-west Wales, with 50mm to 80mm forecast widely and nearly 100mm in some areas, the Met Office said.

Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded and some communities could be cut off, according to the amber warning that started at 3am and runs until 9pm on Monday. Yellow rain warnings are in place for parts of north-east, north-west and south-west England, the East Midlands, the West Midlands and Wales.

The Environment Agency (EA) has posted seven warnings saying flooding is expected, including for parts of the Lake District. There are also 79 active EA alerts saying flooding is possible.

The Met Office said in its amber warning: “Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses (is) likely. Fast-flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life.” It added: “Given the recent wet weather and saturated ground, the likelihood of impacts is higher.”

A yellow rain warning is active for the East Midlands, the West Midlands, north-east and north-west England and parts of Wales until 11.59pm on Monday. Fast-flowing or deep floodwater is possible in those areas and could cause a danger to life, the Met Office said.

Forecasters warned that heavy rain could cause travel disruption, cut off communities and bring power cuts. The Met Office posted a yellow rain warning for the South West, including Devon and Plymouth, until 11.59pm on Monday.

Another is in place from 6am on Monday to 3am on Tuesday for north-east England and Yorkshire. A yellow warning is in force until 3pm on Monday for parts of north-west Wales.

The Met Office said in its amber warning: “Keep yourself and others safe; prepare to avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous road conditions. If you must travel, ensure you watch for possible danger and drive cautiously.”

Stephen Dixon, a spokesman for the forecaster, said the rain will ease for many on Tuesday and bring fairly clear skies, sunshine, and a chill. However, there’s another transition for the UK’s weather on Wednesday, as we return to more widely wet and windy conditions, initially in the west but spreading over much of the country through the day.

“This is likely to once again top up rainfall totals in already sensitive areas in south Wales and the south west of England. Further unsettled weather is likely on Thursday and in the latter part of the week, with low pressure continuing to influence the weather into the weekend.”

The appeals chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has rejected one of Israel’s legal challenges seeking to block an investigation into its actions in the genocidal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza, dealing a blow to Israel’s efforts to derail the case.

In their decision issued on Monday, judges refused to overturn a lower court decision allowing the ICC prosecutor to investigate alleged crimes in Israel’s war on Gaza following the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

The decision clears the way for the continuation of the court’s Palestine investigation, which led to the issuance of arrest warrants in November last year for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Israel does not recognise the jurisdiction of the Hague-based court and has repeatedly denied committing war crimes in Gaza.

The ICC had also issued an arrest warrant for Hamas leader Ibrahim al-Masri, but later withdrew it after credible reports of his death.

The appeal focused on whether the ICC prosecutor was required to issue a fresh notification to Israel before investigating events that took place after October 7, 2023. Israel argued that the post-October 7 assault on Gaza constituted a new situation, triggered by additional referrals submitted to the court by seven other countries since November 2023, including South Africa, Chile and Mexico.

Judges rejected that argument, ruling that the original notification issued in 2021 – when the ICC formally opened its investigation into alleged crimes in occupied Palestine – already covered later events.

They said no new notification was required, meaning the arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant remain valid.

The ruling comes as Israel’s assault on Gaza continues to exact a devastating toll. Since a ceasefire took effect on October 11, 2025, at least 391 Palestinians have been killed and 1,063 wounded, and 632 bodies recovered, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

Since October 7, 2023, the ministry says, at least 70,663 Palestinians have been killed and 171,139 injured.

Celebrities and lawmakers from both of the US’s major political parties are condemning Donald Trump after the president blamed the death of Rob Reiner on what he described as the acclaimed Hollywood director’s dislike of him.

After the apparent killings of Reiner, 78, and his 68-year-old wife, Michele, who were found dead at their home Sunday in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles, Trump took to social media to call the director “tortured and struggling”. Trump also claimed Reiner died “due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME”.

Trump then pivoted to praising his own accomplishments, asserting that Reiner’s alleged “raging obsession” and “obvious paranoia” toward him stood in contrast to his administration. Trump also maintained that he had “surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness … with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before”.

Los Angeles police on Monday confirmed the Reiners’ 32-year-old son, Nick, had been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the deaths of his parents. His bail was set at $4m.

Celebrities and lawmakers, meanwhile, were swift to lambast Trump over what they described as “petty” and “disgusting” comments.

“What a disgusting and vile statement,” actor Patrick Schwarzenegger wrote on X.

Similarly, television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner as her friend and “quite an amazing man,” condemned Trump.

Referencing Trump’s own attacks on critics of the far-right political activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead in September. That killing prompted reprisals from the White House against those who cited Kirk’s history of hostile rhetoric toward immigrants, women and other marginalized groups. And Goldberg said: “I don’t understand the man in the White House. He spoke at length about Charlie Kirk and about caring, and then this is what he puts out. Have you no shame? No shame at all? Can you get any lower? I don’t think so.”

Meanwhile, California’s Democratic governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X: “This is a sick man.”

Echoing Newsom, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost, a Florida Democrat, said: “What a despicable piece of garbage.”

US senator Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, similarly said of Trump: “He’s just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick.”

US House member Zoe Lofgren, another California Democrat, called Trump’s comments “a new low for this petty, hateful man”. Lofgren added: “His party needs to condemn this.”

Similarly, US House member Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, wrote: “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”

Greene also seemingly alluded to Nick Reiner’s past experiences with addiction and homelessness, writing, “Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”

Greene’s fellow Republican US House member Thomas Massie struck a similar chord. The Kentucky representative said: “Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered.”

Massie also said he challenged anyone in his party – including vice-president JD Vance and White House staff – to defend Trump’s commentary.

Reiner had long been a vocal critic of Trump. In a 2017 interview with Variety, he said Trump was “mentally unfit” to be president. And Reiner warned the Guardian that the US could slide into autocracy if Trump successfully ran for a second presidency in 2024 – which he did.

“We see autocracy making its move around the world,” Reiner said at the time. “If we [the US] crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumbles around the world.”

Despite his criticisms of Trump and far-right Christian nationalist movements, Reiner expressed “absolute horror” and unequivocally condemned political violence after Kirk was shot.

“It’s beyond belief what happened to him,” Reiner said at the time. “That should never happen to anybody. I don’t care what your political beliefs are. That’s not acceptable. That’s not a solution to solving problems.”
