A 25-year-old undergraduate of the state-owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, identified as Ayodele Peter, has been brutally killed in what police suspect was a cult-related attack in the Opomulero area of Owo, Ondo State.

The tragic incident occurred while the deceased was still grieving the loss of his mother, who reportedly died about three weeks earlier.

Findings revealed that the killing was linked to a violent supremacy struggle among rival cult groups operating within the institution.

The assailants were said to have forcibly entered Ayodele’s residence and launched a vicious attack on him.

The incident later drew the attention of other students, including suspected cult members, who rushed to the scene but reportedly found the victim critically injured.

He was subsequently taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where medical personnel confirmed his death.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Kazeem, disclosed that the command received a distress call indicating that the student had been shot by individuals believed to be cultists.

He said police operatives were immediately deployed to the area with tactical and intelligence support, adding that although the victim was rushed to hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Kazeem further revealed that a manhunt was launched for the perpetrators, leading to the arrest of one suspect who is currently in custody and has provided useful information.

Efforts, he said, are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, commended the swift and professional response of the officers involved, describing it as a reflection of the command’s improved capacity for rapid intervention.

Lawal reassured residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, noting that security measures have been strengthened across the state, particularly during and after the festive period.

He directed all area commanders, divisional police officers and tactical team commanders to remain vigilant and proactive, ensuring comprehensive security coverage across all parts of the state.

The police also urged members of the public to remain alert, cooperate with security agencies and promptly report suspicious activities, stressing that collective vigilance remains essential to maintaining a safe society.

Five workers at a construction site in Kwara State were abducted by suspected bandits on Monday morning, triggering an immediate security response across the region.

The incident occurred at about 11:40 a.m. along the Sabaja/Owa-Onire Road. The manager of Fix Contracting Engineering Company, Alhaji Suleiman Abdullah Olanrewaju, reported the matter to authorities around 4:30 p.m.

The five individuals forcefully whisked away by the gunmen have been identified as Engr. Ademola Afolabi, Engr. Umar Lade, Fatai (Labourer), Akin (Labourer), and Yusuf (Driver).

According to Zagagola Makama, the company manager confirmed he first reported the abduction to the military before officially notifying the police.

In response, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Oreke immediately mobilized a team of police operatives to join forces with the military and local vigilantes. The combined security team is currently combing the surrounding bushes in a frantic bid to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.

Nkanu Youth Organisation, NYO, the umbrella body for youths across the six Local Government Areas of Enugu East Senatorial Zone, has announced the impeachment of its President, David Nwachukwu.

The group alleged serious misconduct on the part of the former President.

The body, which comprises youths from of Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Isi-Uzo, Enugu East, Enugu South, and Enugu North LGAs,  made this known at a press conference addressed by its National Executive Council on Tuesday, saying that it had equally appointed NYO’s Vice President, Pharm Gideon Nwafor, as the Acting President.

In a statement signed by Pharm Gideon Nwafor; the National Secretary, Ugwu Chukwuemerie Padrepew and the remaining five national executives of the organisation, NYO said that it took the decision after investigations into allegations of financial malfeasance levelled against Nwachukwu.

They include alleged diversion of funds, “fraudulent collection of N10 million using the name of a non-existent faction,” persistent abuse of office, engagement in sponsored attacks on illustrious leaders of to the tune of N2 million, and diversion of money meant for the registration of the body with the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC.

“Upon the conclusion of this process, the Council established that the allegations were credible, weighty, and fundamentally incompatible with the standards of leadership expected in NYO.

“The findings revealed acts of financial misappropriation, abuse of office, diversion of organisational funds, unauthorised collection of monies in the name of NYO, actions undertaken to undermine government institutions, and repeated unilateral decision-making without recourse to the appropriate organs of the organisation.

“In view of the gravity of these findings and the need to safeguard the integrity, unity, and future of the Nkanu Youth Organisation, the National Executive Council hereby announces that Mr. David Nwachukwu is hereby suspended indefinitely as the National President of Nkanu Youth Organization (NYO), with immediate effect. All organisational privileges and authorities previously vested in him are accordingly withdrawn.

“In line with our constitution and to avoid a leadership vacuum and ensure continuity of operations, the Vice President, Pharm. Gideon Nwafor, has been duly appointed as Acting National President.

“He is mandated to stabilise the organisation, coordinate reconciliation efforts, restore financial discipline, and oversee the affairs of the union pending a substantive President within the appropriate timeframe,” the statement read.

NYO said its erstwhile President also lacked authority to speak or act on behalf of the organisation in any capacity whatsoever going forward.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the National Executive Council hereby notifies the general public, government institutions, development partners, and the media that Mr. David Nwachukwu (Dika Dave) no longer represents the Nkanu Youth Organisation in any capacity whatsoever.

“He is not authorised to speak for, act on behalf of, or engage with any individual or institution in the name of Nkanu youths.

“Any correspondence, appearance, negotiation, or public statement made by him henceforth should be regarded as null, unauthorized, and lacking the mandate of the youths of Nkanu land,” it added.

The youths tendered apologies to illustrious sons and daughters of Nkanu land, who they said had fallen victim of their former President’s alleged sponsored attack, saying that such did not represent the ideals, aims and objectives of NYO stands for.

When contacted, Nwachukwu described the allegations as frivolous, and insisted that he remained the National President of the group.

He said the onus lied on his accusers to prov how the organisation got the said N10 million and how it was diverted.

According to him, “They should make proof of if the organisation has 10 million Naira, then how did the 10 million Naira come in?

“So, in a sense, some people reached out to them and bought them off, so they can come and say whatever they want to say.

“If an organisation like this has 10 million, how did it come in? So, how did I, on what ground did I collect the money? Who sent it? What ground did I spend? And did I expect it?

“For some time, because I’m trying to address some things that are happening in the state, which some persons have refused to speak. You know, sometimes when you’re trying to talk to the system, the system doesn’t want people that are standing up to them.”

Nwachukwu went on to declare that he remained the President having been elected by the people.

Nigeria is set to receive 24 M‑346 fighter jets from Italy as part of a major agreement signed with Italian defence firm Messrs Leonardo.

The deal, struck in November 2023, is reportedly worth around €1.2 billion and is believed to be the largest acquisition of military aircraft in West Africa.

Under the contract, Nigeria will also receive 25 years of logistical support, with Leonardo holding exclusive rights for maintenance operations.

The M‑346 aircraft is highly versatile, featuring seven external attachment points and the capacity to integrate both air‑to‑air and ground‑to‑air ammunition. It also supports sight pods that can be linked to helmet‑mounted displays for enhanced targeting and situational awareness.

The first six jets are currently under production in Italy. Three jets are expected to be delivered in 2025, with full deliveries scheduled to continue through mid‑2026.

At the time the purchase was made, the Chief of Air Staff, Hasan Abubakar, said the acquisition would “bolster training capabilities and augment operational effectiveness in diverse mission scenarios.”

The introduction of the M‑346s is expected to strengthen the Nigerian Air Force’s ability to respond to a range of security challenges.

The aircraft purchase forms part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to enhance its security architecture. In particular, the jets are expected to support ongoing operations in the Northeast, where the military continues to battle Boko Haram militants and the Islamic State.

Beyond the northeast theatres, the jets are also seen as a boost in the fight against kidnappings and banditry affecting various parts of the country.

The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has declared his support for the proposed Anioma State, but warned that the agitation must strictly follow constitutional provisions.

Governor Oborevwori made this declaration, on Tuesday, December 16, amid renewed national debate over state creation and regional balance.

Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Prince Johnson Erijo, when Anioma youths from the nine Local Government Areas of Delta North staged a peaceful protest at the Government House, Asaba, to press their long-standing demand for the creation of Anioma State and its zoning to the South-East geopolitical zone, Oborevwori said his government harboured no opposition to the aspiration.

He described the demand as legitimate and deserving of serious consideration within the framework of the law.

He stressed that the state government remained committed to democratic choice, the rule of law and the expressed will of the people, but made it clear that state creation could not be achieved outside constitutional processes.

While commending the protesters for their peaceful conduct, which he described as a mark of maturity and responsibility, the Chief of Staff noted that the agitation was neither misplaced nor improperly articulated.

Drawing from religious references, he said government had a duty to respond to the genuine needs of its people, adding that “no earthly father would give a stone to a child who asks for bread.”

However, Erijo cautioned that internal divisions could weaken the agitation, urging Anioma stakeholders to speak with one voice.

According to him, a clear, common position would strengthen the campaign and eliminate conflicting narratives that often undermine similar struggles.

Earlier, the youths, operating under a coalition, reaffirmed their demand for Anioma State and its formal recognition as part of the South-East.

They argued that ancestrally, culturally and linguistically, Anioma people are Igbo, insisting that their identity had been historically downplayed and could no longer be denied.

Speaking through their leaders — Ofochi Atagana (Ukwuani), Ayo Ashiedu (Aniocha North), Kingsley Kainebi (Ika North East) and Chief Jude Ogbekile (Igbanke) — the protesters appealed to the Delta State Government to provide both political and moral backing for the agitation.

They acknowledged that creating a new state was a constitutional matter requiring approval from the National Assembly and other stakeholders, but maintained that the support of serving governors was often critical to advancing such demands.

The youths described the proposed Anioma State as a “win-win” arrangement, arguing that Asaba would naturally serve as the new state’s capital, while Delta State could designate a new capital to reflect a restructured political arrangement.

They also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly to support the Anioma State bill, reaffirming their resolve to be reunited with their kith and kin across the River Niger.

Across many communities in Nigeria, misconceptions, cultural resistance and religious misunderstandings continue to limit access to family planning.

Persistent myths suggest that contraceptives cause barrenness among women of reproductive age.

As a result, young and married women face unintended pregnancies, rising maternal deaths, pressure on household resources and reduced access to education and economic opportunities.

Albeit growing awareness nationally, access to and uptake of modern family planning methods remain uneven.

According to the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), the percentage of currently married women using modern contraceptives varies widely across states; from a high of about 43 per cent in Ekiti State to as low as three per cent in Kebbi State.

Against this backdrop, Enugu State is making relative progress.

The NDHS shows that 50.5 per cent of women in Enugu have never used family planning methods, with 35.6 per cent currently using them, figures that are comparatively higher than many states but still below optimal levels of demand satisfaction.

However, cultural barriers continue to make uptake difficult in some settings, especially where women cannot freely make reproductive health decisions.

Nationally, only three out of 10 married women report being able to make informed decisions on sexual relations, contraceptive use and personal healthcare, a key benchmark of reproductive autonomy.

Advocacy from traditional leaders

In Enugu, traditional and religious leaders are increasingly expanding family planning awareness and acceptance by providing the cultural legitimacy and moral framing that health workers often struggle to achieve on their own.

Through community dialogues, village meetings and faith-based gatherings, these leaders correct misinformation, reassure families that family planning aligns with cultural and religious values, and encourage couples to make informed reproductive choices.

The Traditional Ruler of Amorji Nike and former Chairman of the Enugu East Local Government Area Council of Traditional Rulers, Titus Okolo, stated that he is utilising his office to amplify campaigns and community demand for modern family planning.

According to Mr Okolo, in spite of Igbo culture’s encouragement of large families, he has sensitised couples to embrace modern family planning to reduce maternal and newborn deaths.

“Life is a stage. As we grow older and die, the community needs new ones who will help to keep the community going.

“So in Igboland, there is nothing that forbids a woman from giving birth to as many children as she desires if the family has the resources to train them.

“But the present condition of the country does not support giving birth to many children that the family cannot train. So we encourage them to adopt family planning to control the number of children,” Mr Okolo said.

He added that his advocacy has influenced other traditional rulers to speak openly about safer pregnancies and healthier, economically stable families.

“MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices and Nigeria Health Watch have been inviting me to their programmes through which they teach us about family planning and contraceptives.

“Based on that, I have made child spacing part of my leadership advocacy as I call on men and other traditional rulers to help disseminate these messages. Culture and religion are no longer a barrier,” he stated.

And religious leaders, too

Religious leaders are also contributing to the shift in attitudes.

Ifeanyi Ofili, a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enugu, said the church is using the pulpit to educate members on responsible reproductive choices.

“As Christians, we believe that sexual intercourse involves both partners who plan together and encourages child spacing,” Mr Ofili said.

He emphasised that family planning decisions should be made jointly by couples.

“We encourage spacing because a woman’s body undergoes a lot with continuous childbirth.

“We do not encourage giving birth to children you cannot cater for, because they (eventually) become a burden to the family and society.

“With my effort, our church now organises health talks two or three times a year. We invite experts.

“They even come for cervical cancer screening. We are not health professionals, so we allow them to do their work,” he explained.

Resident shares her experience

For Enugu residents like Jonnex Onu, the advocacy influenced her decision to adopt modern family planning for child spacing and to improve her health outcomes.

“I have been into modern family planning methods for over a year now.

“I went into modern family planning methods because of the economic hardship.

“I have two children now, and the main thing that motivated me to go into modern family planning is increased awareness.

“My first child is four years plus, and the second child is two years now. And when I talk of we, I mean my husband and I, because it is not only me that is in it.

“So he gave his consent for me to take the modern family planning method,” he said.

Mrs Onu also addressed early concerns about side effects.

“At the initial time I took the implant method, I was having spotting and irregular menstrual cycles, but later on it stopped”.

At the service delivery level, health facilities are also reporting an increase in demand.

A family planning provider at Hilltop Health Centre in Enugu Ngwo, Chidimma Nnamani, stated that the facility now attends to dozens of women each month.

The facility provides family planning services to 50 to 60 women per month.

“We also educate couples about family planning, especially those in rural areas, to prevent them from dying from unwanted pregnancies,” she said.

In spite this progress, national and state data suggest that unmet need for family planning remains high, and no Nigerian state has yet met the National Policy on Population target of reducing unmet need to 10 per cent by 2025.

State variations are also stark. While some southern states have doubled contraceptive prevalence in recent years, many northern states still report single-digit modern contraceptive use.

Policy experts argue that sustaining and accelerating progress will require more decisive government action.

This includes increased funding, improved supply chains, expanded community education and male engagement, alongside continued support from traditional and religious institutions.

Ultimately, while challenges remain, the consistent voices of trusted leaders in Enugu have helped soften resistance, reshape attitudes, improve maternal health outcomes, and empower families to plan their futures with dignity.

… Says Senator didn’t win 2023 election

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Paul Ikonne, has launched a strong rebuttal against Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe over his recent comments questioning the credibility of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election, describing the remarks as politically desperate and out of tune with current realities.

Ikonne made his position known on Tuesday while featuring on TVC popular Morning Show “This Morning”, where he argued that Abaribe’s comments were symptomatic of what he described as growing panic within the opposition political parties as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.

Senator Abaribe had on Monday claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not win in 2023 and that he can’t win again in 2027.

Responding to the claims, Prince Ikonne, said Abaribe’s sustained criticism of President Tinubu’s mandate is borne out of fear of the ruling party’s expanding influence across the country.

He maintained that President Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 poll was decisive and legitimate, stressing that the president enjoyed widespread support cutting across regions, ethnic groups and political interests.

Ikonne said attempts to cast doubt on the outcome of the election were not only revisionist but also ignored the verdict already affirmed by the nation’s electoral and judicial processes.

The APC chieftain further contended that Senator Abaribe lacked the moral standing to question Tinubu’s electoral strength, particularly in Abia State, alleging that the senator had become disconnected from grassroots realities.

He claimed that Abaribe no longer maintains active engagement with his constituents and therefore fails to appreciate the shifting political dynamics in the state and the wider South-East region.

He said: “If you know Senator Abaribe very well, you will realize that he is an attention seeker. He is always seeking attention. This is a man who did not win his own election in 2023. One young man defeated him during the election, and anybody who want to know the details should get what the young man filed at the Tribunal against Senator Abaribe.

“What Abaribe displayed showed clearly that the opposition, if any, are panicking. The President won election, not just in one state but across the country and his popularity has gone up more than what it was in 2023 because 90% of PDP in the entire South-east have collapsed into the APC.”

According to the former Executive Secretary of National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), recent political realignments point to a groundswell of support for the APC and the Tinubu-led administration.

“As we speak, about 90 per cent of the PDP structure in the South-East has collapsed into the APC,” Ikonne said. “The raw materials of politics are human beings, and those human beings are now gravitating towards President Tinubu. This is the reality in the South-East and Nigeria as a whole. I can assure you that there will be an Asiwaju tsunami in 2027.”

He dismissed claims that Tinubu would struggle electorally in Abia, accusing Abaribe of failing to keep tabs on developments in his constituency. Ikonne argued that tangible federal projects and interventions under the Renewed Hope Agenda are already reshaping public perception of the APC in the region.

According to him, ongoing infrastructure projects, including the rehabilitation of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, as well as Agricultural and Social Investment Programmes, are resonating strongly with the people of the South-East.

He said such initiatives have demonstrated the Tinubu administration’s commitment to inclusive development and equitable distribution of federal presence.

Ikonne also rejected assertions that Nigeria is drifting towards a one-party state, describing such claims as excuses by politicians unwilling to accept the growing appeal of the APC. He insisted that defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and other platforms were driven by performance and popular support, not coercion.

“Even the blind and the deaf can see that Nigeria is developing rapidly under President Tinubu,” he said. “That is why the APC continues to attract followership from across party lines.”

He said: “It is not about one-party state, it is about building a strong platform, and you know that chartered politicians when they see a strong platform they don’t waste time, they cross and it is obvious that APC is the platform to beat.

“Like in the South East now, the region is now the stronghold of APC if you look at very well. So the door is still open for those who have seen the light to join us and for those who have not seen anything we wish them well.”

When asked about politicians Cross-carpeting without ideology, Prince Ikonne liken political party to a Church or Mosque where people come and nobody send them back.

” When you begin to preach the word those who do do not have a vision will see vision, those without plans will begin to have plans. That’s what political platforms are meant to be.

” APC is a party of ideology, looking at the President, his programmes, he did establish a Blueprint for Lagos state when he was a governor, it was launched officially, and any governor that come after him will build on it. That’s Progressive, that’s where you see development.

“So, that Governor that played that foundation is now the President and that Blueprint will have been expanded to accommodate the diverse nature of Nigeria in order to develop the entire country. So APC has agenda, APC has ideology, ideology of development, ideology of raising the youths and ideology of inclusiveness.

“So, if those defecting to APC have seen the light because their houses were on fire and they need shelter, you accommodate them, educate them and when they will begin to see the difference. And that’s why they are not leaving. That’s the beauty of democracy. It is a global thing and not just about Nigeria. “
