Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday commissioned the newly built Omololu Olunloyo Relaxation Park, a tourism and leisure facility named in honour of a former governor of the state, Dr Victor Omololu Olunloyo.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Barrister Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, said the park, located along Airport Road, Alakia, Ibadan, would serve both recreational and cultural purposes while preserving the rich heritage of Oyo State.

Makinde noted that the facilities and artefacts displayed at the park would enable residents and visitors to better understand the history, culture and uniqueness of the various geopolitical zones of the state.

He explained that the project was conceived from an abandoned site and developed to immortalise Dr Olunloyo, whom he described as a brilliant and outstanding statesman who made immense contributions to Oyo State and Nigeria.

According to him, Dr Olunloyo distinguished himself early in life, becoming a commissioner in his twenties and excelling in all his endeavours.

He said the decision to immortalise the late elder statesman was taken while he was still alive, recalling the earlier commissioning of a dual carriageway named after Olunloyo, which connects the city to the airport.

Makinde added that the area where the park now stands was previously occupied by shanties, stressing that the state government decided to restore order, beautify the environment and honour a notable son of the state.

He described the park as unique, noting that it houses cultural artefacts representing different parts of Oyo State, including Ibarapa, Oke Ogun, Ogbomosho and Ibadan.

He urged users of the facility to maintain it properly and use it strictly for its intended purpose, noting its proximity to the international airport and the likelihood of frequent visits by investors and foreign tourists.

He said the park should project the serenity and beauty of the state to visitors.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Abulmojeed Mogbonjubola, described the park as another milestone in Governor Makinde’s efforts to redefine Ibadan’s skyline and enhance the aesthetics of the rapidly developing metropolis.

He said the project was designed as a centre for leisure, history and culture, and reflects the administration’s commitment to urban renewal and physical development.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by the Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Mohammed Fadeyi; the Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni, mni; members of the State Executive Council; the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade; co-chairman of the Oyo State Elders’ Council, Chief Wole Oyelese; and former President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Chief Bayo Oyero.

Other dignitaries present included Oloye Lekan Alabi; President-General of CCII, Barrister Ajeniyi Ajewole; Chairman of Local Government Chairmen in Oyo State, Sikiru Sanda; service commanders, traditional rulers and religious leaders.

The Borno state Police Command has dismissing claims circulating on social media that the major suspect in the rape case of a five-year-old girl was arrested and later released.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso said the Command received a formal petition on November 24, 2025, concerning an incident that allegedly occurred on November 13, 2025, at about 9:00 a.m.

According to the police, the petition alleged that the minor was sexually assaulted while on her way to school by a suspect identified as Abdulsalam M. Adakwaki, also known as Yaro.

The Command said investigations commenced immediately after the report was received, with the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) handling the case.

“Contrary to claims circulating on social media that the suspect was apprehended and subsequently released by the police, no arrest has been made in respect of this case,” the statement said.

The police confirmed that the suspect is currently at large, adding that intensive efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest him. As part of the search, the Command said it has engaged community leaders, including the Lawan, and requested the support of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) to help track down the suspect.

To ensure transparency and public confidence, the Command noted that the investigation is being conducted under appropriate supervision and is open to monitoring by relevant civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, and the National Human Rights Commission, in line with established procedures.

The police appealed to members of the public with credible information on the suspect’s whereabouts to report to the nearest police station or assist in ensuring his arrest and handover to the authorities.

The Command assured the public that justice will be pursued and promised to provide further updates as investigations continue.

The Yobe State House of Assembly has given accelerated consideration to a bill seeking to repeal and re-enact the law establishing the Rural Electrification Commission, aimed at ensuring a sustainable power supply across the state.

The bill, presented by the executive arm of government, passed its second reading on the floor of the House following extensive deliberations by lawmakers.

Leading the debate, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, said, “The establishment of the commission is a critical step towards accelerating socio-economic development and improving the living standards of people in rural communities.”

Yusuf explained that, “The commission would enable the state government to facilitate the deployment of renewable energy sources such as solar mini-grids, wind, and biomass systems to ensure adequate, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply across the state.”

The Majority Leader urged members to support the bill in order to enhance social service delivery, transform rural economies, and boost revenue generation.

In their separate contributions, members representing Mamudo, Karasuwa, Damagum, and Gujba constituencies— respectively Hon. Mohammed Isa Bello, Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo, Hon. Bulama Bukar, and Hon. Digma Maina Gana—described the bill as a welcome development, given the persistent power challenges in most rural areas of the state.

Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, committed the bill to the House Standing Committee on Transport and Energy for further legislative action.

President Bola Tinubu has urged state governors to pass the State Police Bill into law to strengthen national security.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting at the Conference Center of the Presidential Villa on Thursday, the President also called on party leaders to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.

He stated, “You have to navigate this country, whether we like it or not. You are in leadership positions that must yield and continue to promote, tolerate, and be flexible. Get involved in whatever is happening in your various states, up to the local government level.

I had a very long discussion with US and European counterparts. I was bragging to them that definitely we will pass a state police to improve security. They asked me if I’m confident, and I said, yes, I have a party to depend on. If at this level we fail, God forbid, we will not fail.”

On local government autonomy, Tinubu added, “Let us equally look at the recent Supreme Court judgment. Local government autonomy is and must be effective. There is no autonomy without funded mandate; we will give them their money directly. That’s the truth. That is compliance with the Supreme Court. Take the leadership seriously.”

The President also acknowledged the limited participation of women at the caucus meeting and urged party leaders to explore ways to expand women’s involvement in future gatherings.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of the President, noted that the APC now has 28 governors, including recent defectors from opposition parties, and said the party’s national reach across all six geopolitical zones would secure victory in the 2027 elections.

APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda expressed gratitude to the President, Vice President, National Assembly leaders, and governors for their support, highlighting the party’s membership drive, significant defections from opposition parties, and commanding majority in the National Assembly.

He noted that the party recorded 80 percent success in recent by-elections and continues to promote internal democracy.

Chairman of the APC Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, commended President Tinubu for his bold economic policies since 2023, the declaration of emergency on insecurity, and the cordial relationship between the Federal Government and subnational governments.

The three-time champions arrived in the North African kingdom on Thursday, completing their journey from Cairo to Fès aboard a chartered flight, and officially opening the final phase of preparations for the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria’s delegation, comprising players, coaches and officials, flew out of Egypt after concluding a short but intense pre-tournament camp and a friendly match against hosts Egypt in Cairo.

The arrival in Morocco signals a shift in focus from build-up to business, with competitive action now just days away.

Head coach Eric Chelle and his backroom staff led the team as they settled into their base in Fès, where all of Nigeria’s Group C matches will be played.

The city, steeped in history and culture, will serve as the Super Eagles’ home throughout the group phase of the tournament.

Nigeria’s build-up has been deliberately measured. After opening camp in Cairo, the Super Eagles used the period to fine-tune tactics, assess new faces and restore match rhythm, with the friendly against Egypt providing a valuable test against continental opposition.

Despite the result, the technical crew viewed the exercise as an important step in sharpening the team ahead of the tournament proper.

The Super Eagles were initially scheduled to hold their first training session on Moroccan soil on Thursday evening, but that has been pushed forward until Friday.

The training sessions are expected to intensify as the countdown to their opening match continues.

Team officials say the focus is on fitness, tactical cohesion and mental readiness, as expectations rise back home.

Nigeria are drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania, a group that promises no easy fixtures.

The Super Eagles will begin their campaign against Tanzania on 23 December at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, followed by a match against Tunisia on 27 December and concluding the group stage against Uganda on 30 December.

For Nigeria, the tournament represents a fresh opportunity to end a long wait for continental glory. The Super Eagles last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2013, adding to earlier triumphs on home soil in 1980 and in Tunisia in 1994.

Since then, near misses and painful exits have defined recent campaigns, including a runner-up finish at the last edition.

As the team settles into Morocco, the mood within the camp is said to be calm but determined.

The Super Eagles have arrived with confidence, purpose and a clear target — to go one step further and bring the AFCON trophy back to Nigeria.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has granted an interlocutory injunction restraining a former Abia State Commissioner for Information, Barr. Eze Chikamnayo, from making or publishing allegedly defamatory comments against Governor Alex Chioma Otti, pending the determination of a ₦100bn defamation suit filed by the governor.

Justice J.E. Obanor, in a ruling delivered on Thursday, ordered Chikamnayo to desist from “writing, authoring, sharing, circulating, broadcasting, voicing, forwarding and/or syndicating” any defamatory content against the claimant on his Facebook wall, Iyierioba Chikamnayo, or on any other social or digital media platforms, including X, Instagram, Telegram, WhatsApp and TikTok, as well as traditional media such as newspapers, radio and television, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The judge stated: “Having carefully considered the application and all the processes before the Court, and there being no process challenging same, I am satisfied as to the need to grant the interlocutory order sought. Motion No. M/15807/2025 is hereby granted, and the orders are accordingly made as prayed, pending the determination of the substantive suit.”

The court adjourned the matter to January 19, 2026, for hearing.

The ruling followed a motion on notice filed by Governor Otti’s legal team, led by Dr Sonny Ajala, SAN, accusing Chikamnayo of continuing to publish offensive materials against the governor despite being served with court processes on October 17, 2025.

According to court documents, Chikamnayo allegedly published a series of posts on his Facebook page between October 17 and October 31, 2025, after being served with the originating processes in the suit. Some of the posts allegedly described the governor in derogatory terms.

In an affidavit in support of the motion, deposed to by Ifeanyi Michael Agbo, practice manager at Deeplaw Associates, the governor’s legal team stated that the defendant, described as a legal practitioner, continued to publish offensive materials against the claimant despite being aware of the pending lawsuit.

The affidavit further alleged that the publications were intended to cause reputational damage and incite public hostility against the governor.

In a written address accompanying the motion, Otti’s counsel argued that the continued publications violated the doctrine of sub judice, which prohibits actions or statements capable of prejudicing matters pending before a court.

Dr Ajala also submitted that the conduct complained of contravened Rule 30 of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2023, which enjoins lawyers to refrain from acts that may obstruct or adversely affect the administration of justice.

The substantive suit, filed on October 8, 2025, followed a demand letter dated October 2, 2025, requesting a retraction of the alleged defamatory publications, which the defendant allegedly failed to comply with within the stipulated seven days.

In the suit, Governor Otti is seeking a declaration that his reputation, goodwill and standing have been gravely injured by the alleged false and malicious publications. He is also claiming ₦100bn as damages for reputational injury, psychological and emotional trauma.

The governor is further asking the court to compel the defendant to tender an unreserved apology to be published on his Facebook page and in selected national newspapers, as well as an order of perpetual injunction restraining further defamatory publications and ₦250m as cost of the action.

Earlier, on October 16, 2025, Justice Obanor had granted leave to serve court processes on Chikamnayo through substituted means, including his Facebook wall and phone and WhatsApp number, after the court was informed that those were the channels through which he could be reached.

The defendant was ordered to enter an appearance within 30 days of service or risk judgment being entered in his absence.

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has announced the defection of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The announcement was made by APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, also from Plateau State, during the party’s 14th National Caucus meeting at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Yilwatda noted that with Governor Mutfwang’s defection, APC now controls all the states in the North Central region.

It is recalled that the meeting is currently in session, with President Bola Tinubu present, along with the six governors who recently defected from PDP to APC.

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved a 10-year jail term or a fine of N75 million for anyone found guilty of forging nomination papers or result forms, or willfully defacing or destroying election-related documents.

The decision followed the House’s consideration of amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act, during which lawmakers approved an upward review of the fine from N50 million. 

The House also approved a fine of N5 million for the improper use of a voter’s card.

However, the lawmakers rejected a recommendation seeking to impose a two-year jail term on individuals who financially or materially induce delegates to influence the outcome of party primaries, congresses or conventions. Members argued that such a provision could be abused by political opponents to witch-hunt candidates.

The House also deleted an existing provision that mandates the cancellation of votes and the conduct of a fresh election in polling units where over-voting is established.

Instead, it approved a new provision stipulating that where over-voting occurs, the excess votes should be deducted from the scores of all candidates, while the presiding officer at the affected polling unit should be prosecuted.

Addressing newsmen after the plenary, Chairman of the House Committee non Electoral Matters, Adebayo Balogun said the Electoral Bill 2025 was originally introduced as a Bill for an Act to repeal the Electoral Act 2022 and enact a new Electoral Act for Nigeria. 

He said, “This approach was informed by our collective desire to build on the gains of recent elections and to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities within our electoral system. The Committee, guided by stakeholder engagements, public hearings, and expert submissions, initially proposed far-reaching reforms intended to modernize and strengthen our electoral framework.

“Among the reforms canvassed were provisions on early voting, inmate voting, the replacement of the Permanent Voters’ Card with more technology-driven voter accreditation mechanisms, adjustments to electoral timelines, and other innovations that, if adopted, would have significantly altered the structure, philosophy, and core provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

“However, as the legislative process progressed, particularly during the sittings of the National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters, it became evident that many of these far-reaching proposals did not command the support of the majority of members across the two Chambers, nor did they enjoy sufficient consensus among key stakeholders.

“In legislative practice, a repeal of an existing law and enactment of a new law is appropriate where the proposed changes fundamentally transform the identity of the principal Act. 

“In this instance, because several of the proposed provisions such as Early Voting, Inmate Voting, Removal of the Permanent Voters Card (PVC), Election Timelines amongst others, that would have occasioned such a fundamental transformation were not approved at the committee stage, the House, sitting as a Committee of the Whole during the consideration of the report, wisely resolved that it would be more appropriate to proceed by way of amendment rather than outright repeal of the Electoral Act 2022.

“This decision is not a setback to the electoral reform. Rather, it reflects the maturity of our democracy and the responsibility of Parliament to legislate in a manner that is inclusive, balanced, and anchored on broad agreement.

“Courts, including Nigerian courts following common law principles, consistently hold that what matters is the effect of the legislation, not its label.

“You will notice that despite the rigorous work done by the Electoral Committee, there were also very meaningful amendments introduced by Members of the House during the consideration of the report in the Committee of the Whole, indicating a robust debate and reflection of the immense importance attached to the Electoral Bill 2025 by the House of Representatives.

“The Electoral Act 2022 remains one of the most progressive electoral laws in our history, and the amendments proposed under the Electoral Bill 2025 are designed to consolidate its strengths, address observed gaps, and improve implementation, without undermining the stability of the existing legal framework.

“I want to assure Nigerians that the House Committee on Electoral Matters has conducted this process with utmost transparency and diligence. We engaged widely with the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, civil society organizations, political parties, professional bodies, development partners, and citizens across the country. The outcome before the House today is a product of those engagements and reflects the realities of consensus-building in a democratic legislature.

“While some innovative proposals could not be accommodated at this stage, they remain part of our national discourse on electoral reform. As our democracy evolves and wider consensus is achieved, such ideas can be revisited in the future through further legislative intervention.

“As we have concluded consideration of this report, I reaffirm the commitment of the House of Representatives, and indeed the National Assembly, to credible elections, democratic stability, and the continuous improvement of our electoral laws. Our goal remains clear: to ensure that every election in Nigeria is transparent, inclusive, secure, and truly reflective of the will of the Nigerian people.
