Kate Winslet says she never set out to become a director – but after reading her son’s first screenplay, she simply “couldn’t let it go”.
In 2023, Joe Anders, whose father is director Sam Mendes, signed up to a screenwriting course at the National Film and Television School.
His mother read one of his assignments and insisted it was worth making into a film – so they did.
Anders created a story around adult siblings who reunite around Christmastime to say goodbye to their dying mother.
Abiding by Mark Twain’s phrase “write what you know”, it was inspired by the death of Winslet’s mother Sally Bridgers-Winslet from ovarian cancer in 2017.

Speaking to Sky News, the Titanic actress says they learned “how to develop a completely new relationship” as colleagues”.
“I’m incredibly impressed by him and really proud of him, not least because he wrote this screenplay and started writing it when he was 19,” she says.
“But he had to adapt and learn very, very quickly that when you’re developing something, you take notes, you take feedback.
“Netflix became involved at some stage that they were also giving notes to, and then I was sort of playing the role of kind of protecting the project and also protecting him at the same time from things that, you know, may necessarily not have been useful, things that actually were great ideas.”

Anders isn’t her only child to have got their start alongside their famous parent.
Mia Threapleton, who most recently starred in the Wes Anderson film The Phoenician Scheme, made her on-screen debut in the 2014 Winslet-led movie A Little Chaos.
They worked together again in the series I Am… which won Winslet a TV BAFTA award for best leading actress.

An actor’s director
Winslet has starred in some of the biggest films of all time, with Titanic, Avatar and Sense And Sensibility, to name a few.
She says it’s that experience in front of the camera that helped her tailor the on-set experience to help its actors explore their emotions and creativity.
“We know what works for us as actors from a director,” she says. “We know what does not work, and we also know what’s actively destructive and sometimes that can mean the environment, the working environment.
“Film sets are very busy places it can often be frantic, sometimes it’s hard to kind of follow what’s going on or what you’re doing next, and it mattered to me enormously that everybody always felt extremely safe, completely informed, and very free.”

American rapper Nicki Minaj has revealed why she chose to speak out publicly on the situation facing Christians in Nigeria, pointing to her personal connections to the country and disturbing reports of attacks on worshippers.
Minaj spoke on the issue during a surprise appearance at AmericaFest, where she responded to questions from the audience.
While answering a question about Nigeria, she said the country holds deep personal significance for her and that reports of attacks on Christians have been deeply distressing.
She revealed that her pastor is a Nigerian and that she has a strong fan base in the country, popularly known as “Nigerian barbs,” noting that these connections made it difficult for her to remain silent.
According to Minaj, reports of kidnappings and killings of Christians during church activities should provoke global concern.
She said, “Nigeria is a place I’ve always loved. Someone very dear to me, my pastor, is Nigerian, and I have lots of Nigerian barbs.
“So hearing that people are being kidnapped while they’re in church, people are being killed, brutalised, all because of their religion that should spark outrage.”
The rapper emphasised that silence only emboldens oppression, declaring that she is no longer willing to stay quiet on matters of faith and persecution. She said.
“We’re not backing down anymore. We are not going to be silenced by the bullies anymore. We will speak up for Christians wherever they are in this world,” she said.
Minaj also spoke on the broader issue of religious freedom, pointing out that many people globally do not enjoy the basic right to worship openly.
She warned that such freedoms are often taken for granted in countries where they are protected.
She said, “We take for granted that there, right now in this world, are people who cannot worship God as they please, where they please.
“Every time we pray in fellowship, we have to remember the people that are right now in this world hiding to pray in fellowship, and we have to pray for them.”
Her remarks come weeks after she reacted to a social media post by United States President Donald Trump, who claimed that “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria.”
At the time, Minaj expressed gratitude for the freedom to worship and condemned religious persecution.
She wrote, “Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practising their religion.”
During the AmericaFest event, Minaj also praised Trump and Vice President JD Vance, saying they understand the concerns of ordinary people.”
“She added that Christians face challenges even in the United States, stressing that leadership is crucial in safeguarding religious freedom.
“Christians have been persecuted right here in our country in different ways. So when we talk about Nigeria and other countries, know that prior administrations saw nothing wrong with that, and that’s what was wrong with them,” she concluded.
Controversial Nigerian influencer and social critic, Verydarkman, has pledged to expose what he claims is scandalous evidence involving Pastor Chris Okafor and Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin.
Verydarkman made the threat on Sunday afternoon in a video shared on his Instagram page while reacting to the arrest of actress Doris Ogala.
While calling for Doris’s release before Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Verydarkman vowed to make public alleged criminal evidence against Pastor Chris Okafor of the Grace Nation Bible Ministry and Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin.
Sharing details of his phone conversation with Doris before her arrest, Verydarkman claimed that the actress had already sent all the evidence to him.

Doris Ogala was arrested on Saturday, December 20, 2025, after calling out the founder of the Grace Nation Bible Ministry, Chris Okafor, over his alleged failure to fulfil a marriage promise to her.
In a series of posts on Instagram, the actress disclosed how she allegedly helped Pastor Chris Okafor and Jeremiah Fufeyin to silence the case of a missing child, Testimony, as well as other criminal cases levelled against them.
Siobhan MacGowan almost looks surprised as she remembers.
“It went very, very quickly. Even the first year went really quickly. Two years… you know,” she tails off.
The 24 months since her brother Shane died have flown by in one sense, but it’s clear that the family’s grief has barely subsided.
“It’s still very raw for me,” Siobhan says. “I can’t listen to Shane’s music, and I can’t watch him on video or listen to him speak.”

For his sister, the festive anthem – which he co-penned with the band’s banjoist Jem Finer – is now a visceral torment.
“You can be a genius, the way you can avoid it [the song]”, Siobhan says. “If it’s coming on, I just turn it straight off. If I’m in a supermarket, I just block it out, or I go into the loo, or I go outside, or I do something like that, but I have to block it.”
She can’t listen to Fairytale “at all”. “It’s just pain. Pain in my heart. It’s just so painful.”

“I remember him saying he wouldn’t have minded if it had been Michael Jackson that had beaten him,” Siobhan recalls. “But he couldn’t forgive the Pet Shop Boys. And it was a terrible cover of Always On My Mind! It was dreadful like, so he couldn’t forgive that.”
But Shane got over it? “No,” she bursts out laughing.

Since the death of the singer, born in the UK to Irish parents, fans have made the pilgrimage to this part of Ireland, desperate to seek out the places that shaped his music.
Siobhan, along with Shane’s widow, Victoria Mary Clarke, has launched a self-guided walking tour called Unravelling Shane, in a bid to give some structure to those journeys.
In the town of Nenagh, we visit some of the spots on the map, including Philly Ryan’s pub, Shane’s favourite watering hole. Philly is behind the bar, an ebullient force of nature, dressed like an undertaker. That’s because he is one. In time-honoured Irish fashion, he is both publican and funeral director.

In one role, he enjoyed many a raucous night with Shane MacGowan. In the other, he planned the funeral of his great friend. “Such a shock,” he says, recalling the phone call from Siobhan after her brother died.
Sitting among endless Shane and Pogues memorabilia, Philly reckons the late singer would enjoy the posthumous boost to Tipperary tourism.

“Shane loved Nenagh,” Philly says. “He’d have loved to get that attention onto Nenagh as a gift from Shane MacGowan to people of Nenagh. Nenagh was his town and he loved it dearly.”
Fans from all over the world wander into the pub now, looking for a tangible taste of Shane MacGowan’s legacy.
“We’ve had requests from places like Serbia, Italy, Germany, America, Japan,” says Carmel Ormond of the new walking tour. She’s a tourism officer with Destination Lough Derg.

“It’s a huge amount of people interested from Japan, from Australia. We’ve requests from all over the world. We constantly meet people that are rambling around trying to find an area. It has become a huge tourist attraction.”
Another stop in Nenagh is the St Mary of the Rosary church, where Shane used to attend Sunday mass with his mother. Two years ago, it was the venue for his funeral. Attended by Johnny Depp and Nick Cave, it was streamed live around the world, as family members danced in the aisle to Fairytale Of New York.

“I danced with my husband and my heart was absolutely breaking,” Siobhan remembers. “I danced through it, and I did it for him. It was a dance of defiance against death. I thought, death is not going to stop this song.”
As his family continue to grapple with their loss this festive period, Shane MacGowan’s legacy is continuing to be shaped. Siobhan says his passing made her finally appreciate the full gifts of her sibling as an artist and a person.
“It was then I realised the huge volume of work and people’s reaction to him and his work that, to me, was extraordinary. Like I thought, wow, look at what you did. That’s what I said, look at what you did, you know.
“It only seems to be getting stronger. His legacy only seems to be getting stronger.”

The wedding reportedly went ahead despite Ogala’s online accusations, which included claims of betrayal, emotional manipulation and a broken promise of marriage after what she described as a long-term relationship.
Over the past few days, Ogala had shared emotional videos online in which she accused the cleric of damaging her life.
She claimed the relationship began around 2017 and alleged that she ended her previous marriage at his request, only to be left distressed after the relationship suddenly ended.

The actress made the call during an appearance on the KAA Truths podcast, where she spoke about the church altar and said security authorities should examine what is beneath it.
Her comments comes on the heels of a long-running fallout between her and the pastor, which began over a marriage promise she claimed was made but never kept.
Ogala alleged that a tragic incident happened while the church altar was being built, claiming that the structure collapsed at a point and led to a death.
She also stated that a blogger later noticed something unusual at the site, which allegedly caused concern.
According to her account, the discovery pushed Pastor Okafor to reach out to her privately to ask how the situation could be handled and how the blogger could be silenced.
She insisted that the DSS should visit the church, dig up the altar area, and carry out a proper investigation to clear the air.
The actress has had several public clashes with the pastor in recent times, including sharing personal videos online.
She said: “DSS should go to that church and open his altar. I wouldn’t say further than that. When they were building that place, that place collapsed, somebody died.

“Never Again!”- Tunji Adeleke Alleges Harassment, Loss of $23k Bracelet at Popular Lagos Nightclub

In posts shared on X (formerly Twitter), Tunji said he had a terrible night at BOHO, a popular nightlife spot in Lagos. He claimed he lost a luxury bracelet worth about $23,000 during his visit.
Reacting to someone who said they enjoyed partying at the lounge, Tunji warned others, saying people may have fun but could also suffer huge losses.
He also accused the club’s security team of treating guests harshly, alleging that people were pepper-sprayed before being allowed inside.

In an official statement, Harvey Mason Jr, CEO of the Recording Academy, describes the honorees as “an extraordinary group whose influence spans generations, genres, and the very foundation of modern music”.
The Recording Academy recognised Fela as the “architect of Afrobeat,” highlighting his transformative influence on the genre and his enduring impact on generations of artists.
The Academy has previously inducted Fela’s 1976 album Zombie into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame.
