The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed that a fire incident occurred at one of its offices in Abuja on Saturday morning, with no loss of life recorded.

The incident took place at the FIRS office located at No. 15 Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, and was said to have broken out on the fourth floor of the building.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Technical Assistant (Print Media) to the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Sikiru Akinola, the service said the situation was swiftly brought under control through the prompt action of security personnel and emergency responders.

“The fire, which broke out on the fourth floor of the building, was promptly responded to by our security personnel on duty,” Akinola said.

He explained that the timely intervention of the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service, alongside other emergency agencies, ensured that the fire did not escalate or spread to other parts of the building.

According to him, “With the swift support of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service and other emergency responders, the fire was successfully contained and prevented from spreading further.”

Akinola confirmed that no casualties were recorded in the incident, adding that all staff and occupants were safe. However, he noted that some offices on the affected floor suffered damage as a result of the fire.

“The Service can confirm that no lives were lost in the incident. However, a number of offices on the affected floor sustained damage,” he said.

The affected floor houses the executive office suites of past Executive Chairmen of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, though the extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire. Akinola disclosed that early findings suggest the incident may have been triggered by an electrical fault.

“An investigation into the cause of the fire has commenced, with preliminary assessments pointing to a possible electrical fault,” he stated.

He added that the Service has begun a comprehensive review of its internal safety procedures in response to the incident. According to the statement, all existing safety protocols are being examined and reinforced to prevent a recurrence.

“In the meantime, all internal safety protocols are being thoroughly reviewed and strengthened to mitigate against future occurrences,” Akinola said.

The FIRS assured the public that operations would continue while necessary remedial measures are taken to address the impact of the incident and improve safety across its facilities.

BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, on Saturday mourned the passing of former Commissioner of Information in the state and unarguably one of the most vocal politicians in the state, Charles Idahosa.

Idahosa reportedly died on Saturday afternoon after his daily routine of receiving visitors in the morning at his house along Airport Road.

He was 72 years old and hailed from Ehor in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area where he once served as the chairman of the council in the early days of his political career.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, said Governor Okpebholo sent his heartfelt condolences to the family of Idahosa over the death of its patriarch.

He said, “Governor Okpebholo who expressed shock at the sudden passing of Hon Idahosa, described him as a strong party leader and eminent Edo Indigene, who has given a lot for the growth and development of the state.

“The Governor eulogized late Hon Idahosa, who in time past was a Commissioner, board member, and Special Adviser as a genuine party stalwart who believed in the establishment of institutions and gave his all towards entrenching these beliefs.

“Governor Okpebholo prayed for the repose of his soul and for God to comfort his wife, children, family and the people of Ehor for this great loss.”

On his part, Obaseki described the late Idahosa as “an illustrious son of Edo State and a respected leader from the Edo South Senatorial District, who served our State and nation in various capacities.

“Charlie Tempo was someone with whom I shared a personal bond. We attended the same secondary school, worshipped in the same Anglican Church, and our families share longstanding ties, which makes this loss even more painful for me.”

Obaseki added, “I commiserate with the entire Idahosa family, the Oshodin family, the people of Edo South, friends and associates of the great Charlie Tempo and pray that God grants all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

Though no official statement has been issued by the family as his younger brother, Andrew Idahosa, did not pick several calls, a source close to the family confirmed his death.

According to him, “Daddy was full of life this morning, as usual he came downstairs receiving people. I don’t know what happened; it is shocking.” He said.

Idahosa, popularly known as Akakasiaka and Charlie Tempo, was a very vocal politician and was the Political Adviser to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for the eight years he was governor of the state.

He pitched a tent with Godwin Obaseki when he fell out with Oshiomhole as governor and even wrote a book titled “The Fall of the Last Godfather”. He also defected with Obaseki to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for his second term election in 2020.

The late Idahosa also fell out with Obaseki after his re-election and he was among the first politicians to publicly say so. He went back to the APC and was also the first to release jingles for Governor Monday Okpebholo’s election.

Community leaders, local government chairmen, and health experts in Niger State have raised concerns over farmers drying crops on dusty roadsides, where they are  exposed to dirt and thereby exposing the public to health risks.

The urgent appeal was made at a sensitisation event in Mokwa and Lavun, titled Against Roadside Drying, organised by the Federal Government, IFAD, and the Value Chain Development Programme, VCDP, for farmers from Edati, Lavun, and Mokwa councils.

“Drying crops on roads or bare ground is a recipe for disaster,” warned Nurse Leah Hassana Yisa, a health worker with IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna. “When farmers prioritise convenience over safety, we all pay the price.”

The event targeted farmers from Lavun, Edati, and Mokwa local government areas, highlighting the consequences of careless food handling and the need for a change in attitude.

Nurse Leah Hassana Yisa sounded the alarm on the dangers of the practice, saying, “Drying cassava, rice, or other crops on roadsides or bare ground exposes food to vehicle dust, stones, and animal waste, risking food poisoning, cancer, and intestinal problems like appendicitis from swallowed stones.”

She also emphasised the need for farmers to use cement floors and tarps instead, and to avoid harmful chemicals for storage, or ensure that any chemicals expire before the produce is sold to the public.

The chairmen of Lavun and Mokwa local governments, Alh Isah Maali, represented by Mal Lawan Mohammed, Director of Agriculture, and Hon Abubakar Usman, Mokwa council secretary — described the sensitisation as “impactful” and pledged to sustain the initiative.

“The councils will support the farmers to replicate what they have learned in their communities to help change the way they handle food,” the LG leaders noted.

Religious leaders also committed to preaching safer practices in their places of worship and communities, stressing the importance of adopting better ways of drying food crops and abandoning long-standing unsafe practices.

The Chief Imam of Mokwa, Alh Musa Ibrahim, stated, “We will use three Fridays to speak against this in the mosque and visit communities to sensitise farmers. What you will not eat, don’t give to others, that is what we want them to understand.”

Mrs Elizabeth Yisa, Business, Marketing and Development Officer of VCDP in the state, announced that tarps and cement floors will be provided to support farmers in adopting cleaner practices, aimed at protecting consumers and improving agricultural standards.

“The initiative is a step towards safer food handling in Niger State by farmers, with community leaders in attendance. We want farmers to understand that they must properly process what they eat and what they sell to the public to prevent contamination and enhance quality. We are pleased the farmers have agreed to embrace the shift,” she noted.

Mrs Aisha Mohammed and Lami Ndakotsu, beneficiaries of the sensitisation from Edati and Mokwa, admitted that they had been careless before, saying, “Now we will switch to cement floors and use tarps, no more roadsides!”

The immediate past Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Charles Idahosa, a former Commissioner for Information in the state.

Naija News reports that Idahosa, popularly known as “Charlie Tempo,” served in the Edo State Executive Council during the administration of former Governor Lucky Igbinedion and was regarded as one of the prominent political voices from Edo South Senatorial District.

Senator Magnus Abe from Rivers State has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fits all the boxes in addressing Nigeria challenges.

Abe, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Rivers State, made this remark at the Headquarters of the Tinubu Support Group (TSG) in Abuja.

Saturday Telegraph reports that the TSG on Saturday commenced distribution of rice to members all over the country with Abuja as the starting point.

Leadership of TSG, led by Hon James Faleke were present at the event.

Senator Abe, who spoke at the event said, “Tinubu is answer to the present challenges of our country.

“The past few years have shown that the president has done things in this country that no other leader has ever done.

“He has changed the narrative of our country, and he’s looking for real solutions to the problems of Nigeria in ways that no leader has done before.

“So the vision of TSG, the thing we saw, the thing we pursued, is still very valid, and we are all proud to still stand together to say today, as we said that day, that Tinubu will make Nigeria great.

“But I want to tell you that bags of rice, will be going to all the 36 states of Nigeria, including FCT. Faleke does not only remember members of TSG, he remembers all the sub-groups that have worked for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

James Abiodun Faleke that we are celebrating today make sure that many of our support group members have found a position in the federal government.

Many of them have become director generals of different agencies, many of them have become executive secretaries of different agencies, and many of them have become board members.

In fact, the board members are over 501,000, all because of Rt Hon. James Abiodun Faleke. But of course, when you have over 5,000 registered support groups, each support group has over 100 or 1,000 members, there are a number of positions that can go to support group members and all of us cannot be appointed.

“Let me also say that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has reposition Nigeria, he has brought down the prices of commodities. He has stabilised our economy.

He has paid our foreign debt $7 billion and $3.5 billion. He has provided funds for students to go to tertiary education. He has sent money to the state, where states have enough resources.

He has also ensured that there is regional development commissions in all the six geopolitical zones. He has also ensured that local governments have autonomy. Sir, we want to use the opportunity to thank the President for all that he has done.

Let’s continue to pray for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Let’s continue to pray for our country. Let’s continue to pray for James Abiodun Faleke.”

The Nigerian soldiers detained in Burkina Faso have arrived in Ghana following their release by the Burkinabe government on Wednesday.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed this in a statement issued on X on Saturday.

Mr Tuggar confirmed that the “eleven personnel of the Nigerian Air Force arrived safely in Accra, Republic of Ghana, from Burkina Faso, aboard a Nigerian Air Force C-130 (913) aircraft.”

The soldiers were released about 10 days after a high-level delegation from Nigeria, led by Mr Tuggar, met with Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré and other members of his administration.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that Burkina Faso and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) had accused Nigeria of violating Burkina Faso’s airspace following an emergency landing of the air force aircraft.

The AES is made up of three West African countries, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, led by putschists. The three countries withdrew from the West African bloc, ECOWAS, and have maintained an adversarial relationship with the bloc despite the efforts of ECOWAS.

In its response to the AES’s claim, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) denied the allegation. It said that the aircraft was travelling to Portugal but landed in Burkina Faso for safety reasons and “in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols.”

The air force said the NAF C-130 crew “observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield.”

In his Saturday post on X, Mr Tuggar said the soldiers arrived in Ghana on Friday and were set to leave for Portugal, their original destination, on Saturday.

Upon arrival in Accra, the officers were received by a representative of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, Ghana’s Special Envoy to the AES, alongside officials of the Nigerian High Commission in Accra and senior officers of the Ghana Air Force, Mr Tuggar said.

“The personnel were accorded a warm reception and hosted by their Ghanaian counterparts.”

Reports also revealed that after the abduction, the bandits allegedly demanded large ransoms for each victim. While there is no evidence that ransom was paid, the kidnapped victims were later released to the government and reunited with their families.

After multiple attacks on innocent lives and several religious centers, including mosques and churches, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, spoke out.

The Jigawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has strongly condemned the suspension of a former governor of the state and one of the party’s founding fathers, Alhaji Sule Lamido by the party’s Board of Trustees, BoT, describing the action as unjust, vindictive and inimical to party unity.

The state chairman of the party, Dr Babandi Ibrahim Gumel, disclosed this in a statement signed and made available to journalists on Saturday.

According to the statement, the Jigawa PDP received news of Lamido’s suspension with “profound shock and disappointment”.

The statement added that the suspension, which was reportedly based on allegations that Lamido attended meetings capable of undermining party unity, amounts to an affront to justice, internal democracy and the reconciliation efforts recently championed by the PDP leadership.

The party stressed that the exercise of legal and constitutional rights within the party should not be interpreted as an act of disunity. It recalled that Lamido approached the court after he was allegedly denied the opportunity to purchase a nomination form to contest the position of National Chairman of the PDP.

The statement further noted that the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, ruled in Lamido’s favour by restraining the PDP from proceeding with its national convention until his right to contest was determined.

The Jigawa PDP argued that the suspension appeared to be a punitive action against Lamido for seeking judicial redress over an issue on which the court had already found merit.

The party also faulted the decision of the BoT for contradicting recent public statements by its chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, who had emphasised reconciliation within the party, admitted past mistakes and appealed to aggrieved members to return fully to the PDP fold.

However, it maintained that suspending a founding member who sought justice through legal means runs contrary to the spirit of reconciliation and healing publicly advocated by the party leadership.

The chairman said the suspension was premature and prejudicial, as the matter remains before the courts. He also described Lamido as one of the few founding fathers of the PDP who has remained loyal to the party without defecting, warning that punishing such loyalty sends a negative signal to other committed members.

The party further argued that the action undermines party unity at a time when the PDP requires cohesion to effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. It also insisted that there is no provision in the PDP constitution that allows for the suspension of a “life member”.

The party called on the BoT to immediately and unconditionally withdraw the suspension of Alhaji Sule Lamido.
It also demanded that the BoT publicly affirm the right of all party members to aspire to leadership positions in line with the party’s constitution and the laws of the country, without fear of victimisation.

It further urged the BoT to retrace its steps, align its actions with its reconciliation agenda, and tender an apology to Lamido.

The Jigawa PDP reaffirmed its commitment to a united, democratic and law-abiding Peoples Democratic Party.
