The immediate past Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Charles Idahosa, a former Commissioner for Information in the state.

Naija News reports that Idahosa, popularly known as “Charlie Tempo,” served in the Edo State Executive Council during the administration of former Governor Lucky Igbinedion and was regarded as one of the prominent political voices from Edo South Senatorial District.

In a condolence message released on Saturday, Obaseki described the late Idahosa as an illustrious son of the state who served Edo and Nigeria with dedication and commitment.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Hon. Charles Idahosa, fondly referred to as Charlie Tempo,” Obaseki said.

According to him, the late politician distinguished himself as a respected leader whose contributions to governance and public communication left a lasting imprint on Edo State.

“The late Idahosa was an illustrious son of Edo State and a respected leader from the Edo South Senatorial District, who served our state and nation in various capacities,” he added.

Beyond his public service, Obaseki noted that Idahosa’s death was particularly painful for him due to their long-standing personal relationship.

The former governor revealed that both men shared deep personal and family ties that went back many years.

“Charlie Tempo was someone with whom I shared a personal bond. We attended the same secondary school, worshipped in the same Anglican church, and our families share longstanding ties, which makes this loss even more painful for me,” Obaseki stated.

Obaseki also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, friends, associates and the people of Edo South, praying for strength for all those affected by the loss.

“I commiserate with the entire Idahosa family, the Oshodin family, the people of Edo South, friends and associates of the great Charlie Tempo, and pray that God grants all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.

Senator Magnus Abe from Rivers State has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fits all the boxes in addressing Nigeria challenges.

Abe, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Rivers State, made this remark at the Headquarters of the Tinubu Support Group (TSG) in Abuja.

Saturday Telegraph reports that the TSG on Saturday commenced distribution of rice to members all over the country with Abuja as the starting point.

Leadership of TSG, led by Hon James Faleke were present at the event.

Senator Abe, who spoke at the event said, “Tinubu is answer to the present challenges of our country.

“The past few years have shown that the president has done things in this country that no other leader has ever done.

“He has changed the narrative of our country, and he’s looking for real solutions to the problems of Nigeria in ways that no leader has done before.

“So the vision of TSG, the thing we saw, the thing we pursued, is still very valid, and we are all proud to still stand together to say today, as we said that day, that Tinubu will make Nigeria great.

“He needs our support, and we are here to give that support. So I thank our leader”

Hon. Faleke, addressing the members of TSG said, “All our TSG members in all the states, and all the support groups that we worked together for the actualisation of our presidential mandate,

“I want to tell you that since we won the election, we have not had time to come together, to jolly, to relax together. I promise you, by new year, January, we will relaunch, and then come together in a better and bigger venue.

“I use your contact to reach out to all our members in all the states to appreciate them for standing firm despite all the issues that we have had.

“The Director General had enumerated very briefly some of the achievements of the president, but you’re all aware that despite all the crisis, despite the Nara redesign, I don’t know, all of us have forgotten there was a time there was a Naira redesign.

“There was a time, because of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, they don’t want him to win election, the Naira was redesigned. And so many of us cannot even afford to buy bread because we have no Naira, there was no cash.

“We went into election without cash, without anything but God, who has anointed Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said he will win election, and he won election. Congratulations to all of us.

“We are here to thank you, and to say in the spirit of Christmas, we cannot just go home without reaching out to all of you.

“And so 2020, so many people were afraid to come and join us, to show face. And I told them, I said, this man is going to be the president.

“And to God be the glory, that we didn’t labour in vain.Today he is the president. Today, even those who were against him are with him now. I mean, so we say kudos to all of you. Kudos to all of us.

The TSG Director General, Dr Umar Tanko -Yakasai in his remarks said, “We join in the celebration and be able to merry by giving out rice to all our sub-groups, leaders who are in Abuja.

“But I want to tell you that bags of rice, will be going to all the 36 states of Nigeria, including FCT. Faleke does not only remember members of TSG, he remembers all the sub-groups that have worked for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

James Abiodun Faleke that we are celebrating today make sure that many of our support group members have found a position in the federal government.

Many of them have become director generals of different agencies, many of them have become executive secretaries of different agencies, and many of them have become board members.

In fact, the board members are over 501,000, all because of Rt Hon. James Abiodun Faleke. But of course, when you have over 5,000 registered support groups, each support group has over 100 or 1,000 members, there are a number of positions that can go to support group members and all of us cannot be appointed.

“Let me also say that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has reposition Nigeria, he has brought down the prices of commodities. He has stabilised our economy.

He has paid our foreign debt $7 billion and $3.5 billion. He has provided funds for students to go to tertiary education. He has sent money to the state, where states have enough resources.

He has also ensured that there is regional development commissions in all the six geopolitical zones. He has also ensured that local governments have autonomy. Sir, we want to use the opportunity to thank the President for all that he has done.

The Nigerian soldiers detained in Burkina Faso have arrived in Ghana following their release by the Burkinabe government on Wednesday.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed this in a statement issued on X on Saturday.

Mr Tuggar confirmed that the “eleven personnel of the Nigerian Air Force arrived safely in Accra, Republic of Ghana, from Burkina Faso, aboard a Nigerian Air Force C-130 (913) aircraft.”

The soldiers were released about 10 days after a high-level delegation from Nigeria, led by Mr Tuggar, met with Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré and other members of his administration.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that Burkina Faso and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) had accused Nigeria of violating Burkina Faso’s airspace following an emergency landing of the air force aircraft.

The AES is made up of three West African countries, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, led by putschists. The three countries withdrew from the West African bloc, ECOWAS, and have maintained an adversarial relationship with the bloc despite the efforts of ECOWAS.

In its response to the AES’s claim, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) denied the allegation. It said that the aircraft was travelling to Portugal but landed in Burkina Faso for safety reasons and “in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols.”

The air force said the NAF C-130 crew “observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield.”

In his Saturday post on X, Mr Tuggar said the soldiers arrived in Ghana on Friday and were set to leave for Portugal, their original destination, on Saturday.

Upon arrival in Accra, the officers were received by a representative of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, Ghana’s Special Envoy to the AES, alongside officials of the Nigerian High Commission in Accra and senior officers of the Ghana Air Force, Mr Tuggar said.

“The personnel were accorded a warm reception and hosted by their Ghanaian counterparts.”

Reports also revealed that after the abduction, the bandits allegedly demanded large ransoms for each victim. While there is no evidence that ransom was paid, the kidnapped victims were later released to the government and reunited with their families.

The Jigawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has strongly condemned the suspension of a former governor of the state and one of the party’s founding fathers, Alhaji Sule Lamido by the party’s Board of Trustees, BoT, describing the action as unjust, vindictive and inimical to party unity.

The state chairman of the party, Dr Babandi Ibrahim Gumel, disclosed this in a statement signed and made available to journalists on Saturday.

According to the statement, the Jigawa PDP received news of Lamido’s suspension with “profound shock and disappointment”.

The statement added that the suspension, which was reportedly based on allegations that Lamido attended meetings capable of undermining party unity, amounts to an affront to justice, internal democracy and the reconciliation efforts recently championed by the PDP leadership.

The party stressed that the exercise of legal and constitutional rights within the party should not be interpreted as an act of disunity. It recalled that Lamido approached the court after he was allegedly denied the opportunity to purchase a nomination form to contest the position of National Chairman of the PDP.

The statement further noted that the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, ruled in Lamido’s favour by restraining the PDP from proceeding with its national convention until his right to contest was determined.

The Jigawa PDP argued that the suspension appeared to be a punitive action against Lamido for seeking judicial redress over an issue on which the court had already found merit.

The party also faulted the decision of the BoT for contradicting recent public statements by its chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, who had emphasised reconciliation within the party, admitted past mistakes and appealed to aggrieved members to return fully to the PDP fold.

However, it maintained that suspending a founding member who sought justice through legal means runs contrary to the spirit of reconciliation and healing publicly advocated by the party leadership.

The chairman said the suspension was premature and prejudicial, as the matter remains before the courts. He also described Lamido as one of the few founding fathers of the PDP who has remained loyal to the party without defecting, warning that punishing such loyalty sends a negative signal to other committed members.

The party further argued that the action undermines party unity at a time when the PDP requires cohesion to effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. It also insisted that there is no provision in the PDP constitution that allows for the suspension of a “life member”.

The party called on the BoT to immediately and unconditionally withdraw the suspension of Alhaji Sule Lamido.
It also demanded that the BoT publicly affirm the right of all party members to aspire to leadership positions in line with the party’s constitution and the laws of the country, without fear of victimisation.

It further urged the BoT to retrace its steps, align its actions with its reconciliation agenda, and tender an apology to Lamido.

The Jigawa PDP reaffirmed its commitment to a united, democratic and law-abiding Peoples Democratic Party.

Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that his party will closely monitor the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso said the role of INEC remains central to the survival of democracy in the country, stressing that public trust in elections depends largely on how the commission conducts its duties.

He spoke in Abuja on Saturday during the NNPP national convention, shortly after the party’s newly re-elected executives were sworn in.

The event was attended by INEC officials, party leaders, and delegates drawn from different parts of the country.

While addressing the gathering, the NNPP national leader acknowledged the presence of INEC representatives and congratulated the commission on the appointment of its new national chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan.

“I want to say so far so good, we are keeping our eyes on INEC because its job is so critical that it can make or mar democracy in this country,” Kwankwaso said.

He added that the NNPP expects a more productive relationship with the electoral body, while assuring party members that the leadership would continue working to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.

Kwankwaso also expressed appreciation to party supporters who travelled long distances for the convention and commended Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, for his consistent backing of the NNPP.

The convention ratified resolutions reached by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and formally confirmed members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

It comes as the NNPP steps up early preparations for the 2027 polls, following its improved showing in the 2023 general election.

In 2023, the party gained national attention after winning the Kano State governorship and recording strong results in parts of the North-West. Kwankwaso finished fourth in the presidential race but dominated voting in Kano State.

However, the election period was marked by widespread criticism of INEC, particularly over the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and delays in uploading results to the iReV portal. These issues triggered legal battles and renewed calls for electoral reforms.

NNPP leaders at the convention said those experiences would shape the party’s approach as 2027 approaches.

President Bola Tinubu has hailed the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, for continuously investing in education, health, and transportation and for steadily improving the livelihoods of indigenes.
The President, who was on a three-state official tour of Borno, Bauchi and Lagos States, arrived Maiduguri at 12.30 pm, and proceeded to inaugurate the international wing of the Muhammadu Buhari Airport, a new VIP extension, Electric Vehicles, intra-state buses, tricycles, and three model primary, junior secondary and secondary schools.
“I am commissioning this primary, junior secondary school and senior secondary schools to the glory of God, and continuous education of our children,” President Tinubu said in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Saturday.
The President also participated in the marriage ceremony of Sadeeq Sheriff, son of the former Governor of the State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and his heartthrob, Hadiza Kam Salem.
President Tinubu stood in as the father of the groom, in accordance with Kanuri culture and marriage rites, while Prof. Zulum acted as the father of the bride to receive the traditional bride price in the form of gold coins.

The events were attended by seven state governors, Dikko Umaru Radda, Katsina State; Agbu Kefas, Taraba State; Mai Mala Buni, Yobe State; Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State; Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State; Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State; Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; senators and ministers.
The President departed Maiduguri for Bauchi State at 3.25 pm.
