Many people may know that eating too much salty food can raise your risk for high blood pressure and life-threatening heart disease.
But it may come as a surprise that foods high in sodium can also age the skin.
It may cause the skin to look dry or puffy and even interfere with our production of collagen: the protein that helps keep skin firm, hydrated and healthy.
“Salt plays an essential role in the body by helping regulate fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contractions,” Westlake Dermatology’s Dr. Timothy Tran said in a statement.
“However, when consumed in excess, sodium can lead to a host of issues, and the skin is often the first area to reflect these imbalances.”

It’s recommended that Americans consume around 2,300 milligrams a day. However, most Americans get 1,100 more than that.
As a result of that and other factors, nearly half of all American adults live with high blood pressure.
High blood pressure can weaken the skin and interfere with collagen production, according to dermatologist Dr. Michael Lin.
“When sodium disrupts the skin’s hydration and promotes oxidative stress, the skin becomes more vulnerable to collagen breakdown,” Tran explained. “Over time, this can result in sagging, fine lines, and a rough skin texture.”
A salt-heavy diet can make our skin look puffier by causing the body to keep excess water to try to counteract the effects of the salt, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
The skin may also appear dry, because it pulls the water from the cells.
“This will then prompt the body to pull water from your cells and skin, resulting in dehydration. It could mean dry and flaky skin, with more prominent lines and wrinkles, as well as a lackluster appearance,” Singapore’s Cutis Medical Laser Clinics notes.
Sodium that is stored in the skin could even play a role in developing eczema: an uncomfortable skin condition that causes the skin to become dry, red and bumpy. More than 31 million Americans suffer from some form of eczema, according to the National Eczema Association.
Just one extra gram of sodium a day increases the likelihood of flares by more than 20 percent, according to researchers in San Francisco.
Sodium may also have a role in the chronic inflammation in eczema that accelerates skin aging, and the skin naturally becomes drier as we age.

To fight the effects of sodium on our skin and keep it happy and healthy, experts recommend people limit their intake of ultraprocessed foods, such as chips, canned soups, fast food, meats, pickles and bread.
You can still get your salty fix eating healthier foods including nuts, beans, fish and reduced-sodium cheese or other options.
Low-sodium eating is made easier when cooking at home, because we often use less salt than is used in frozen or store-bought food.
Make sure to rinse any canned foods to remove excess salt from the preserving process and use herbs and spices for seasoning.
Rinsing canned beans can remove up to 40 percent of their sodium content, registered dietitian Amy Davis told Health.
And, eating salty foods with foods that are high in potassium – such as a banana – can also help to counteract some of the water retention caused by the sodium.
It’s important to keep the skin well-hydrated and moisturized, because it is our largest organ and protects the body in many ways.
“The skin provides a barrier to protect the body from invasion by bacteria and other possible environmental hazards that can be dangerous for human health,” National Institutes of Health dermatologist Dr. Heidi Kong said.

Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Heming Willis, has mixed feelings this holiday season amid her husband’s dementia diagnosis.
The 70-year-old actor’s family announced in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), only a year after they said he was “stepping away” from acting because he had aphasia.
Since announcing her husband’s diagnosis, Heming Willis has spoken often about his health and how it’s affected their two daughters, Mabel Ray, 13, and Evelyn Penn, 11.
In a blog post shared on Saturday titled “The Holiday Looks Different Now,” she wrote about how her feelings and holiday traditions have changed since her husband’s diagnosis.
“Traditions that once felt somewhat effortless require planning- lots of planning. Moments that once brought uncomplicated joy may arrive tangled in a web of grief,” Heming Willis, who is the Die Hard star’s primary caregiver, wrote.

“I know this because I’m living it. Yet despite that, there can still be meaning. There can still be warmth. There can still be joy. I’ve learned that the holidays don’t disappear when dementia enters your life. They change.”
She recalled her husband’s holiday traditions, including how he used to make pancakes in the morning and go out in the snow and play with his young daughters. Although Heming Willis’ family doesn’t have that holiday routine anymore, the actor’s dementia “doesn’t erase those memories.”
She went on to describe the unexpected ways her grief has surfaced this year.
“It can arrive while pulling decorations out of storage, wrapping gifts or hearing a familiar song. It can catch you off guard in the middle of a room full of people, or in the quiet moment when everyone else has gone to bed,” Heming Willis wrote.
As she comes to terms with how different the holidays look this year, she said she’s making space for new memories with her family, without erasing the old ones.

“There’s a misconception that if the holidays aren’t what they once were, they must be hollow. But meaning doesn’t require everything to stay the same. It requires connection. This holiday season, our family will still unwrap gifts and sit together at breakfast. But instead of Bruce making our favorite pancakes, I will,” she concluded. “There will be laughter and cuddles. And there will almost certainly be tears because we can grieve and make room for joy.”
Heming Willis’s blog post comes one month after she addressed criticism about moving Willis out of their family home due to the degenerative nature of his condition.
“F*** em! As Bruce would say,” she told the audience at End Well 2025, a Los Angeles conference focused on end-of-life care, in November.
She got emotional when she confessed that she was forced to make “impossible decisions” in the wake of her husband’s diagnosis.
“This is not how I envisioned our life,” she said through tears. “So I had to make the best and safest decision for our family. And I knew, by being honest and open about it, that it would be met with a lot of judgment.”

As I sit down to reflect on how 2025 has been, I am reminded of the profound lessons I’ve learned and the unyielding resilience that has defined my journey. At just 15 years old, I’ve faced challenges that have tested my spirit and pushed me to the brink of exhaustion.
This year was marked by periods of intense struggle, both physically and emotionally. A week-long illness left me bedridden, and for four arduous days, I couldn’t muster the strength to change out of the clothes that clung to my weary body. The cold seeped into my bones, and my feet felt like ice for three long days. It was a season of vulnerability, and I cried a lot, pouring out my heart to God in desperation.
The weight of financial struggles bore down on my family and me, leaving us feeling lost and uncertain about our future. There were months when it seemed like the darkness would consume us, but in the midst of the turmoil, I found solace in prayer and faith. And then, like a beacon of hope, God’s mercy broke through, lifting us out of the depths of our struggles and setting our feet on solid ground.
In the midst of these challenges, I made a bold decision to start my own business at the age of 15. I’m grateful for the leap of faith I took, as it’s been a journey of growth, learning and empowerment. My business is built around my passions, and I’m excited to share that I’m into Tote bags, self-care products, home essentials, and some other accessories like electric fans, influencer-led lights and more. Instacart has announced it is discontinuing a controversial pricing program that allowed some customers to see different prices for the same product, ordered simultaneously from the same store, when using its delivery service.
The move follows significant public scrutiny and concerns over transparency.
The decision comes after a report from Consumer Reports, alongside advocacy groups Groundwork Collaborative and More Perfect Union, revealed that Instacart presented nearly three out of every four grocery items to shoppers at multiple prices during an experiment.
This practice raised alarms, prompting Instacart to state in a blog post, “At a time when families are working exceptionally hard to stretch every grocery dollar, those tests raised concerns, leaving some people questioning the prices they see on Instacart. That’s not okay – especially for a company built on trust, transparency, and affordability.”
The program, which began in 2023, was initially intended to help grocers understand customer price sensitivity, mirroring how physical stores might offer varied prices across different locations.

Instacart clarified that this was neither “dynamic pricing,” where prices fluctuate with demand, nor “surveillance pricing,” which tailors prices based on personal data. Instead, prices were offered randomly, with some customers seeing slightly higher or lower figures. For instance, the Consumer Reports experiment found Instacart customers were shown one of five different prices for a dozen Lucerne eggs from a Washington, D.C. Safeway, $3.99, $4.28, $4.59, $4.69, or $4.79.
While retailers will retain the autonomy to set their own prices on the delivery platform and vary them in their brick-and-mortar outlets, Instacart confirmed that “from now on, Instacart will not support any item price testing services.” The company declined to specify how many customers were affected, but the service has ceased immediately.
This development follows a separate legal challenge last week, where Instacart agreed to pay $60 million in customer refunds to settle federal allegations of deceptive practices.
The Federal Trade Commission had accused the company of falsely advertising free deliveries and failing to clearly disclose service fees, which could add up to 15% to an order. Instacart denied wrongdoing in that case, stating the settlement was reached to allow it to move forward.
In its blog post, Instacart concluded, “Trust is earned through clarity and consistency. Customers should never have to second-guess the prices they’re seeing.”

The county government of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, has introduced a policy recognising menstrual pain as a legitimate reason for paid time off for women in its employment.
Under the new policy, female employees working for Nairobi County will be entitled to up to two days of paid menstrual leave each month. The leave can be taken without deductions from sick or annual leave and does not require medical documentation. The policy was approved by the county’s governor, Johnson Sakaja.
According to county officials, the measure is aimed at supporting women’s health and wellbeing while improving productivity and morale in the workplace. They also maintain that the policy is cost-neutral, as it has been incorporated into existing human resources systems.
The move addresses a challenge faced by many women in the workplace. Studies indicate that up to 80 per cent of women experience menstrual pain severe enough to interfere with daily activities, including work. Nairobi County employs a majority female workforce, making the policy particularly significant within the county’s public service.
Nairobi’s decision has sparked widespread discussion across Kenya, drawing both praise and criticism. Supporters describe it as a progressive step towards recognising menstrual health, while critics have raised concerns about fairness and implementation within the broader workforce.
Within Africa, Zambia remains the only country with a nationwide menstrual leave policy, granting women one paid day off per month for menstruation, locally referred to as Mother’s Day. Globally, countries such as Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Spain have also implemented various forms of menstrual leave.
With this policy, Nairobi County becomes the first public employer in Kenya to formally recognise menstrual pain within its workplace leave structure, placing the issue of menstrual health firmly into national conversations around labour rights and workplace policy.
