Alexander Isak Undergoes Surgery After Ankle Fracture
Liverpool have confirmed that Alexander Isak has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a fracture to his left leg, dealing the club an early-season injury blow.
The Sweden international required an operation on an ankle injury which included a fractured fibula. While the Merseyside club stopped short of putting a precise timeframe on his recovery, it is understood that the 26-year-old is expected to be out for at least a few months.
Alexander Isak picked up the injury during Saturday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham. Introduced from the bench, he marked his appearance by finding the net for Arne Slot’s side, only for the moment to quickly turn sour.
The striker was injured by a challenge from Micky van de Ven immediately after striking the shot for his goal. He was unable to continue and was clearly in distress as medical staff assisted him off the pitch.
The setback is a major concern for Liverpool, particularly given Isak’s status as the club’s record signing following his £125m move in the summer. Since arriving from Newcastle in September, the forward has scored three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.
The injury also extends a frustrating spell for the striker. During the summer, Isak was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia with what was described as a minor thigh problem, amid growing uncertainty over his future. He later trained alone at former club Real Sociedad before sealing his switch to Anfield on deadline day.
Nigeria’s top-ranked male doubles tennis player, Yusuf Abubakar, and the country’s highest-ranked female junior player, Ohunene Yakubu, emerged champions in the men’s and women’s singles events respectively at the Merit Tennis Open, held at the National Stadium tennis courts, Surulere, Lagos.
Abubakar defeated Daniel Adeleye, the current No. 1 player in the Nigeria Tennis Federation men’s singles rankings, to secure the men’s singles title and a ₦500,000 winner’s prize. Adeleye received ₦250,000 as runner-up.
In the women’s singles final, Yakubu overcame Bright Emmanuel to claim the ₦500,000 top prize, while Emmanuel earned ₦250,000.
The tournament, organised by Merit Petroleum Nigeria Limited in collaboration with the Mainland Tennis Club, also featured junior and wheelchair tennis events, underscoring its commitment to inclusivity.
In the junior category, Issa Yahya defeated Nathaniel Aluko to emerge champion, earning ₦150,000, while the runner-up received ₦100,000.
In the wheelchair tennis events, Nigeria’s top-ranked men’s wheelchair player, Alex Adewale, claimed the men’s title and ₦400,000, with Yusuf Wasiu finishing second.
In the women’s wheelchair final, Nigeria’s number one-ranked female wheelchair player, Chituru Nwaozuzu, defeated Andrea Usoh to win the title and a ₦400,000 prize.
Speaking on the rationale behind the sponsorship, the Chief Executive Officer of Merit Petroleum Nigeria Limited, Tokunbo Onasanya, said the initiative was designed to promote local talent and encourage inclusivity in sports.
“Every time I come to the stadium, I see the hard work these players put in, from children to women and the physically challenged. This is our third year of supporting tennis here, and we hope to continue to grow the tournament and show our local talent”, she said.
Onasanya stressed that the company was deliberate about equitable rewards across all categories, adding that every participant received some form of incentive.
“Whether they are men, women or wheelchair players, everyone is rewarded fairly. We want to encourage them to represent Nigeria locally and internationally”, she added.
President of Mainland Tennis Club, Tochukwu Adino, described the event as a maiden edition at this scale, noting that plans were underway to elevate it to a national tournament.
“We decided to make it an open tournament to invite players from Lagos and its environs to showcase their talents. Next year, we are planning a bigger edition that will be included in the Nigeria Tennis Federation calendar”, Adino said.
He noted that sports remained one of the most effective tools for youth empowerment and urged government and corporate organisations to invest more deliberately in grassroots competitions.
“There are many empowerment programmes by politicians, but sports is the language young people understand. Through sports, we can get many youths off the streets, help them discover their talents and even build careers”, Adino said.
He added that tennis had helped transform the lives of several youngsters at the National Stadium, noting that many started out as ball boys before being mentored by club members.
“Some of these boys you see today came from the streets. They started by picking balls and, through mentoring and scholarships from club members, they have developed into competitive players”, he said.
Adino called on corporate bodies to see tennis sponsorship as a viable corporate social responsibility (CSR) platform, stressing that sustained funding was key to the sport’s survival.
“Tennis is an expensive sport. Without corporate sponsorship, it is difficult to sustain development. We are building a structure that will outlive our tenure and continue to support young talents,” he added.
Also speaking, Yemi Onasanya said the cumulative prize money for the tournament exceeded ₦10 million, noting that most of the players were nationally ranked.
“The winners of both the men’s and women’s categories earned ₦500,000 each. The tournament is open, but seeded players are selected based on national rankings”, he explained.
The wheelchair tennis champions used the platform to highlight challenges facing para-sports athletes in the country.
Adewale described the Merit Tennis Open as the highest-paying para-sports tennis tournament in Nigeria, while calling for improved sponsorship and equipment support.
“We have the talent, but we lack equipment and sponsorship. If we get the right support, we can compete internationally”, he said.
Nwaozuzu, who recently won three gold medals at the West African Para Games in Abeokuta, said inadequate equipment and funding continued to hamper wheelchair tennis development in Nigeria.
“I believe that this new president will do better. Because in the wheelchair tennis, they don’t have a standard wheelchair to play the tennis. If at all we have a standard wheelchair, because I have been in tournament outside country, I don’t see what they are playing.
But what they are using to defeat us is the wheelchair that they are using. They are using a better wheelchair than us” .

DK Metcalf’s suspension could cost him an eye-watering $45million after the Steelers star swung at rival fan
Pittsburgh Steelers star DK Metcalf’s suspension could prove to be extremely expensive for the wide receiver, if upheld by the NFL.
Metcalf was slapped with a two-game suspension on Monday after he was caught taking a swing at a Lions fan during Sunday’s victory in Detroit.
The wide out was found to have violated league policy specifying ‘players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day.’
Metcalf intends to appeal the punishment, but if it is upheld, it could come at an eye-watering cost to the 28-year-old.
Based on his contract with the Steelers, the suspension would void not only the rest of his salary for this season, but also $45million he is owed in future guaranteed money, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
Metcalf is reported owed $25m fully guaranteed in 2026 and $20m guarantee for injury in 2027.

Metcalf will be eligible to return to the Steelers active roster on Monday, January 5, following the remaining two games of the regular season.
He will lose about $555,000 in salary as a result of the two-game ban but, if upheld, the financial penalty could be far worse than that.
Metcalf signed a four-year, $132 million contract extension with the Steelers in March after he was traded from the Seattle Seahawks.
CBS cameras caught Metcalf jawing with a man in a blue wig during the second quarter before grabbing the fan by his shirt collar and punching at his face. Metcalf only made minimal contact, if any, with his swing.
At the time, commentator Jim Nantz remarked: ‘That is not going to have great consequences for the Steelers and Metcalf.’
The former Ole Miss star did not discuss the incident with reporters after Sunday’s controversial win in Detroit, but Metcalf and the fan do have a shared history dating back to his time in Seattle. According to NFL Network, Metcalf reported the same fan to Seahawks security in 2024.
As reported by NFL Network, Metcalf claimed on Sunday he heard that fan use a derogatory term to describe his mother and called the receiver ‘something we both know you don’t call a black man.’

However, the fan, identified by the Detroit Free Press to be Ryan Kennedy, strongly denied those allegations.
A statement from his lawyer on Monday said that Kennedy ‘categorically denies using… any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based slur.’
The statement continued: ‘At no point before, during, or after the incident did Mr. Kennedy use racial slurs or hate speech of any kind. The claims suggesting otherwise are untrue and are not supported by video evidence, eyewitness accounts, or any contemporaneous reporting.’
Kennedy’s lawyer claimed that, ‘since these false statements began circulating,’ his client ‘has been subjected to harassment, threats, and messages advocating violence, creating serious concern for his and his family’s personal safety and well-being.’
The statement concluded: ‘Mr. Kennedy is a lifelong Detroit Lions football fan who attended the game lawfully and never anticipated becoming the subject of national attention, much less false accusations of racism. He respects the game, the players, and fellow fans – and rejects hate and discrimination in all forms.’
Kennedy claimed to the Free Press that he had called Metcalf by his full name -DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf – which triggered the furious outburst from the NFL star.
‘Like everyone’s talking to me,’ he said before the final whistle. ‘I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.’
‘He doesn’t like his government name,’ Kennedy said. ‘I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked.’

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has expressed disappointment over the absence of teammate Benjamin Fredrick from Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Nigeria begin their AFCON campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday evening, but Fredrick will miss the tournament after sustaining an injury that has ruled him out for the duration.
Speaking to reporters in Morocco ahead of the opener, the Super Eagles defender said the setback was difficult to take, especially given the stage the competition offers.
“No, I’ve not spoken to him. But it is very upsetting,” the Fulham player said of Fredrick’s absence from the team.
“I feel like it would’ve been amazing for Fredrick to showcase his talent on this AFCON stage.
“I just wish him a speedy recovery, and hopefully, he can be back with us in no time.”
Fredrick, who is on loan at Belgian Pro League club Dender EH from Brentford, had been hoping to make his tournament debut before injury stopped him.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has moved to calm fears over Nigeria’s defensive options ahead of the Group stage opener.

Fredrick’s injury will keep him sidelined throughout the tournament.
Despite the absentees, Chelle insisted he remains confident in the players available to him.
“No, I’m not worried,” Chelle told reporters at the pre-match press conference ahead of the Tanzania clash when asked about the absence of the three players.
“I trust my players. Of course, I’d prefer these guys [Troost-Ekong, Fredrick, and Aina] to be here, but now I’m with my squad, and I trust them so much.
“We have a strong defence, we’ve worked a lot on it. We are focused on our game plan and when you want to defend, it’s not only about the defenders; it’s about all the players on the pitch.”

Troost-Ekong was named in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the competition but announced his retirement from international football days before the final list was unveiled by head coach, Eric Chelle.
The centre-back is confident the team will have a good outing in Morocco despite his absence.

Former Nigeria international William Troost-Ekong has expressed his believe that the Super Eagles will not disappoint at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Troost-Ekong made this known while thanking Nigeria President Bola Tunibu for fulfilling his house and land pledges made to members of the Super Eagles squad that finished second at the 2023 AFCON which he was the captain.

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen has issued a heartfelt apology to Nigerian football fans following the national team’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, admitting that the pain and disappointment felt by supporters is fully shared by the players.

Jake Paul is facing a nine-month recovery after Anthony Joshua fractured his jaw during their heavyweight bout, it can be revealed.
Paul, 28, who banked an eye-watering £69,000 per second for the fight at Miami’s Kaseya Center, was sent crashing to the canvas in the sixth round after Joshua, 36, delivered a devastating knockout blow.
The defeat left ‘The Problem Child’ with a parasymphysis fracture on the right-hand side of his jaw, as well as a fracture to the body of the mandible. The injuries are expected to take around eight weeks to heal.
However, due to the fracture running through the roots of Paul’s teeth, he is likely to require dental implants, with the procedure expected to take place roughly three months after the fractures have healed.
Paul may then need crowns fitted to the implants – a process that typically takes a further six to seven months – meaning it could be at least nine months before the influencer-turned-boxer even regains around 90 per cent of his jaw strength.
As a result, Paul faces a prolonged spell away from the ring and is expected to return to the cruiserweight division should he wish to box again, having weighed in almost 30lbs lighter than Joshua for his most recent fight.

The Super Eagles have demanded for a bigger bonus at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations from the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, DAILY POST reports.
According to SCORENigeria, the NFF have proposed a bonus package that increases as the team progress in the tournament in Morocco.
The players are however seeking for more money from the Federation.
They believed they should get more money as the prize money has been increased.
The Confederation of African Football, CAF, announced last weekend that prize money for the winner has been increased to $10m.
Defending champions, Cote d’Ivoire went home with $7m for winning the title on home soil in 2023.
The Super Eagles received $4m for finishing as runners-up.
Former Nigerian international Benedict Akwuegbu has warned the technical crew not to depend solely on Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen for goals at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The three-time AFCON champions will be aiming to kick off their campaign today against Tanzania on a winning note before Tunisia and Uganda, respectively, in Group C.
Speaking with Footy Africa, Akwuegbu, who expressed optimism that Nigeria will excel at the tournament, urged Eric Chelle to adopt more varied tactics and a different style of play.

“I’m optimistic that the team will excel; we just need to keep hope alive. We must continue to support the NFF and the entire team. We have the players and the quality needed to win the tournament.”
“My only advice to the coach is to adopt more varied tactics and a different style of play. The team currently relies too heavily on Osimhen, and whenever he doesn’t play or score, the team tends to struggle. Many countries are now familiar with our approach and will focus on marking Osimhen and Lookman out of the game.
“It’s important for the coach to develop a system in which goals can come from any player and where there are multiple match winners, as this is an area the team currently lacks.”

When you’re 3–0 down and the world is watching every move and seizing on every gaffe, it just looks like a mistake.
Had England won in Adelaide, as they might have done but for a couple of dropped catches and some bad luck with Snicko, the excursion to Noosa after the second Test in Brisbane would have remained in the rear-view mirror.
Instead, it is now being used in evidence against a team who stand accused of a fundamental lack of seriousness, with head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key both admitting they failed to give the players proper preparation, and the whole of Australia laughing at them, as if they ever needed an excuse for that.
And if it’s true that it is the victors who get to write up history, the losers should be more careful about the material they provide. Even if it turns out that England’s players did nothing worse in Noosa than boost local bar receipts, it shouldn’t have been beyond the wit of the management to see how the trip might be interpreted.
During a gap between games in the 2023 Ashes, the Australian players went their separate ways before reconvening for the fourth Test in Manchester. It meant there was no question of a media circus. England, by contrast, invited scrutiny by sending everyone off to a tiny resort with one main street and plenty of prying eyes. It was an accident waiting to happen.

Key himself, who did not join the trip to Noosa, could have restricted himself to the observation that – as far as he was aware – the players had enjoyed a few quiet beers as they escaped the Ashes cauldron for a few days.
But he went further than that, saying heavy drinking is ‘completely unacceptable’, and confirming England were looking into the matter.
That may have been a nod to his paymasters back at Lord’s, with ECB chairman Richard Thompson and chief executive Richard Gould understandably sensitive about stories depicting their highest-profile team as indulging in some 18-30s jolly.
Even so, his comments have not helped the perception of a side viewed by many as too loose, insufficiently willing to put in the hard yards, and out of touch with reality.
The public utterances on this tour have played into critics’ hands. Ben Stokes called ex-players ‘has-beens’, which smacked of arrogance.
Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick said there had been no discussion of the faulty strokeplay that led to a two-day defeat in Perth, while McCullum angered fans by saying England had ‘over-prepared’ for Brisbane.
The coach then tested the supporters’ patience even more by saying after the Adelaide defeat that his team had ‘definitely improved’, when results suggest the opposite.
‘Alright on the night’ may be an attitude that works for a naturally gifted cricketer like Stokes, who lifts himself for the big occasion.

But most players need fine-tuning before big series, and Key echoed the alarming comments made by McCullum after the 82-run defeat in the third Test about the lack of preparation.
‘We had a team that actually hasn’t played anywhere near its potential,’ said Key. ‘Have we got the most out of the players? There’s no question for me: I don’t think we have.
‘And then you have to think, did we give the players the best chance to come out here and succeed from the start? I don’t think we did, to be honest, and that’s on us, really.’
Key also confirmed his support for McCullum, describing him as an ‘excellent coach’. He added: ‘This is only the third series we’ve lost in four years. His win record is very good as well.
‘Clearly we’ve mucked up on the big occasions, whether that was the home Ashes series, or last summer against India, which we should have won as well. The big ones have eluded us.
‘There’s been some brilliant moments along the way. I still feel like there’s plenty of life in this whole thing now, but we have to evolve.’
The question now is whether Key is given the chance to preside over whatever evolution comes next, and that may depend on the results at Melbourne, where the fourth Test starts on Boxing Day, and at Sydney in the new year.
Some indication of progress may be central to the chances of both Key and McCullum extending their involvement, with Key insisting that – above all – England have simply been outplayed.

‘Sometimes the opposition is just bloody good. But there’s no doubt that coaches and management never survive just doing the same thing over and over again.’
Change, or perish: the last couple of weeks of this tour have assumed existential importance.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria step into their 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign on Tuesday night in Fès with a familiar sense of expectation as they face Tanzania in a Group C opener that leans heavily in their favour on paper.
Forty-five years after the two sides first met at the tournament, the Super Eagles return to the continental stage carrying pedigree, experience and an imposing record against a Taifa Stars team still chasing a first-ever AFCON victory.
Their only previous meeting at the finals came on March 8, 1980, when hosts Nigeria opened a title-winning run with a 3-1 win over Tanzania at the National Stadium in Surulere. Led then by Christian Chukwu, Nigeria laid down an early marker on the way to their maiden continental crown, while Tanzania, captained by Leodegar Tenga, were left to regroup.
Since that afternoon in Lagos, the balance has barely shifted. Across seven meetings in all competitions, Nigeria remain unbeaten, recording four wins and three draws. The most recent encounters came during qualifying for the 2017 finals, with a goalless draw in Dar es Salaam followed by a narrow Nigerian victory in Uyo.
The broader contrast between the sides reveals why Nigeria began as a firm favourite. This is their 21st appearance at the finals, more than any nation outside Egypt, and their 105th match at the tournament, the third-highest tally in AFCON history.
Three-time champions in 1980, 1994 and 2013, the Super Eagles have reached the podium in 13 of their last 15 appearances and have exited at the group stage only twice in their entire AFCON history. Their record in North Africa is similarly strong, with top-three finishes in five of the six tournaments hosted in the region.
Tanzania’s story is more modest. This is only their fourth appearance at the finals and their second in a row. In 10 AFCON matches, they have yet to record a win, managing three draws and seven defeats. They have scored just once across their last four finals matches and have lost all three of their previous opening games.
Nigeria’s own record in the first matches offers further encouragement. They have won 13 of their 20 AFCON openers, drawn two and lost five, and are unbeaten in their last three opening fixtures. They have also lost only one of their last 14 group-stage matches and have been beaten just four times in their last 25 AFCON outings.
Qualification for Morocco was equally assured. Nigeria went through unbeaten, winning four matches and drawing two, with Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen finishing as joint top scorers.
Inside the 35,000-capacity Complexe Sportif de Fès, Coach Eric Chelle is expected to rely on a settled core. Stanley Nwabali is set to start in goal, with Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey at the heart of the defence and Bright Osayi-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi providing width as wing-backs.
Wilfred Ndidi, newly named captain, should anchor the midfield alongside Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, while Simon Moses, Lookman and Osimhen are tipped to lead the line.
Depth remains one of Nigeria’s strengths, with Ryan Alebiosu, Bruno Onyemaechi, Chidozie Awaziem, Raphael Onyedika, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Samuel Chukwueze and Paul Onuachu all available from the bench.
Tanzania, coached by Miguel Gamondi, will look to resilience and organisation. Captain Mbwana Samatta, now with Le Havre in Ligue 1, remains their standout figure, supported by winger Simon Msuva and creative midfielder Feisal Salum. Wing-back Mohammed Hussein is expected to provide energy down the flanks.
There is also a subtle Nigerian link within the Tanzanian camp, with goalkeeper Amas Obasogie plying his club trade alongside Hussein Masalinga and Khalid Iddi in the Tanzanian league.
Cold conditions are forecast in Fès, in line with much of Morocco, but the Super Eagles will be hoping to generate early warmth with a strong start to their campaign and give supporters at home and across the diaspora something to rally behind.

Members of Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have officially received their national honours certificates as well as title documents for houses and land allocations promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The presentation took place on December 22, 2025, at the team’s hotel in Fez, Morocco, ahead of the Super Eagles’ opening match of the new AFCON qualifying campaign.
President Tinubu had pledged the rewards following Nigeria’s runners-up finish at the 2023 AFCON tournament held in Côte d’Ivoire in January and February 2024.
The brief ceremony was led by Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, and attended by several dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi; Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu; Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale; President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau; Senior Special Assistant to the President, Mrs. Nathan-Mash; Nigerian High Commission officials; and Mallam Saleh Amadu, among others.
Speaking at the event, Dikko clarified that most players were awarded the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).
However, Ahmed Musa and Victor Osimhen received the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), having previously been conferred with the MON.
Team captain William Troost-Ekong was awarded the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in recognition of his emergence as Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2023.
Dikko confirmed that all national honours, housing allocations in Abuja or Lagos, and land grants in Abuja approved by President Tinubu had been fully processed, with allocation letters issued in line with the President’s commitment to rewarding excellence and national service.
He also disclosed that similar rewards approved for the Super Falcons and Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have been processed. Title documents for houses and national honours certificates are ready for collection, while the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation are finalising the direct payment of the cash awards — equivalent to $100,000 per player — into the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
The development highlights a renewed focus on structured athlete welfare and accountability, as the Super Eagles shift attention back to their on-field responsibilities in the ongoing AFCON qualification campaign.
Rivers United head coach Yemi Olanrewaju has expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance against Katsina United.
The Port Harcourt club held their hosts to a 1-1 draw in a Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, matchday 18 encounter in Ilorin on Monday.
Azeez Falolu gave Katsina United the lead in the 23rd minute, while Stephen Manyo equalised for the hosts 15 minutes from time.
Olanrewaju declared that they deserved more from the game.
