Simba TVS, the pioneer of the Queen Riders Programme Nigeria’s largest women-focused automobile empowerment initiative, has strengthened its partnership with the Consumer Credit Corporation of Nigeria (CREDICORP) and Gamma Mobility in support of the Federal Government-led Mobility Programme aimed at economically empowering 10,000 women nationwide.

The collaboration was officially launched in the Federal Capital Territory, where CREDICORP, in partnership with Gamma Mobility, Sub-city handed over a fleet of “TVS King Deluxe Plus” Tricycles (popularly known as Keke), alongside certificates of proficiency, to women trained by Simba TVS as professional riders under the Queen Riders initiative.

The Programme is designed to expand access to consumer credit while accelerating women’s participation in Nigeria’s commercial transport sector.

Speaking on the initiative, Simba TVS management emphasised that the company intentionally prioritises women due to their critical role as drivers of economic growth. The Queen Riders Programme was described as a transformative initiative that empowers women through comprehensive tricycle riding training, technical capacity building and entrepreneurship support.

“At Simba TVS, women’s empowerment means access to skills, reliable tools and real opportunities platform to express independence, confidence and dignity. These TVS Tricycles are not just vehicles, they are income-generating assets that will enable women build sustainable businesses, earn steady livelihoods and support their families.

“We are proud to lead the Queen Riders Programme alongside partners who share our commitment to inclusive growth.”

The management further reaffirmed that the Queen Riders initiative represents a broader societal movement that challenges long-standing barriers limiting women’s participation in the transportation sector.

Simba TVS reiterated its long-term commitment to ensuring that the programme continues to open pathways for women in traditionally male-dominated industries, noting that inclusive economic participation is critical to national development.

Also speaking at the event, CREDICORP Managing Director, Uzoma Nwagba, highlighted the long-standing relationship between CREDICORP and Simba TVS, noting that the partnership has been built on trust, shared values and a commitment to delivering practical mobility solutions.

He revealed that the CREDICORP leadership has undertaken several visits to the Simba TVS assembly plant in Lagos which, according to him, reinforced confidence in the company’s manufacturing standards, local capacity and long-term commitment to Nigeria’s mobility and industrial development.

Nwagba explained that the initiative deliberately integrates consumer credit, asset provision, professional training and structured business support, adding that Gamma Mobility plays a critical role in programme execution and operational support, ensuring that beneficiaries are well-positioned for long-term success.

Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to Simba TVS, CREDICORP and Gamma Mobility, with one participant stating that the initiative gave her the confidence to pursue a livelihood she once believed was unattainable. She noted that the training and support received equipped her with essential riding and basic maintenance skills, enabling her to contribute meaningfully to her household income.

The Queen Riders Programme is a Simba TVS women-focused empowerment initiative that provides training, certification and access to tricycles for women from under-represented backgrounds, unlocking pathways to financial independence and economic resilience.

The Nigeria Police Force on Monday night released Sodeeq Atanda, a senior investigative reporter with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), hours after officers attached to the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit arrested him in Lagos.

FIJ reported that Mr Atanda was released a few minutes before midnight on Monday.

The President of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, Musikilu Mojeed, told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday that the journalist was released following the intervention of the institute.

Mr Mojeed who condemned the arrest, said he engaged senior police officials over the matter.

“I was able to convince the police to release the gentleman last night,” Mr Mojeed, who is also the Editor-in-Chief of PREMIUM TIMES, said during a phone interview.

Also, Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson, stated on Tuesday that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered Mr Atanda’s immediate release after being informed of his arrest.

Mr Hundeyin disclosed this in a post on his X handle while responding to a post by activist Omoyele Sowore on Monday evening.

He said the IGP was alerted to the arrest after Mr Mojeed contacted him and that the police chief expressed displeasure over the incident.

“I promptly informed the IGP, and he was miffed,” Mr Hundeyin wrote.

According to him, the IGP directed that the head of the unit responsible for the arrest be contacted and ordered to release the journalist immediately, adding that the officer would be sanctioned.

Mr Hundeyin said the IGP would not condone any action capable of undermining the police’s commitment to press freedom.

PREMIUM TIMES had earlier reported that police officers attached to the IGP Monitoring Unit, Lagos Annex, arrested Mr Atanda after allegedly detaining his wife and nine-month-old child to lure him out.

FIJ’s founder and editor-in-chief, Fisayo Soyombo, confirmed the arrest to this newspaper on Monday evening.

“They released the wife and the child and arrested Sodeeq. They handcuffed him. The wife confirmed this to me at 8:24 p.m.,” Mr Soyombo said.

According to FIJ, the officers had first arrested Mr Atanda’s wife and infant at their residence and detained them for several hours at the Owutu Police Station in Ikorodu, Lagos.

The organisation alleged that the officers coerced the wife into calling her husband under the pretext that their child was ill and hospitalised.

The journalist’s wife gave a similar account, saying the officers later drove her and the baby to a street close to their home and waited for Mr Atanda to arrive.

“When they realised my husband was no longer far from the house, the policemen drove me and my baby to a street not far from our home,” she said. “And when they saw him, they handcuffed him and took him away. That was when they released my baby and me.”

She said Mr Atanda was taken to the Force Headquarters in Obalende, Lagos.

As of the time of filing this report, the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit had not issued any statement on the arrest.

Calls by PREMIUM TIMES to the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, were unanswered.

This came just a day after President Bola Tinubu urged government institutions and officials to emulate the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi, who recently won recognition as a champion of press freedom by the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI).

Incidentally, the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, was among those blacklisted by the IPI Nigeria due to incessant harassments of journalists by the police, while Mr Ajayi was commended for his commitment to press freedom and respect for journalists and media organisations.

Disputed police invitation

The arrest followed a police invitation sent to Mr Atanda on 26 November by a person who identified himself as “Omo Eleniyan,” claiming to be attached to the IGP Monitoring Unit, Lagos Annex.

In a WhatsApp message seen by PREMIUM TIMES, the sender wrote: “I’m a police officer attached to IGP Monitoring Unit Lagos Annex… An approved petition was referred to my department from the office of the inspector general of police for further investigation.”

Mr Atanda responded by requesting that the invitation be formally sent to FIJ’s official email address. However, the sender replied: “The invitation Is [sic] for you not [sic] for the organisers [sic].”

When Mr Atanda explained that he worked for FIJ and that such correspondence should go through the organisation, the sender replied: “Alright, sir. No problem.”

Previous police interrogation

This is not the first time Mr Atanda would be arrested or interrogated by the police.

In September, he was detained and questioned for about 11 hours by the Ekiti State Police Command following petitions by Abayomi Fasina, the on-leave vice-chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).

The petition accused Mr Atanda of cyberbullying, blackmail and criminal defamation over FIJ’s reports alleging sexual harassment by Mr Fasina against Folasade Adebayo, a director at the university.

Mr Atanda said officers of the State Intelligence Department questioned him extensively about his sources and pressured him to disclose them, a demand he refused, citing journalistic ethics.

“They asked who my sources were and insisted there must be an origin of the information I published. I told them I was not obligated to disclose my sources,” he said.

He also alleged that investigators attempted to dictate the contents of his written statement and questioned him over reports not directly related to the petition.

Mr Atanda was eventually released that day following the intervention of the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, who, according to the journalist, acknowledged that he was only doing his job.

Pattern of arrests

PREMIUM TIMES has documented a growing pattern of harassment and arbitrary arrests targeting Nigerian journalists.

Friday Alefia, Lagos-based publisher of Naija News Today, was released after 22 days in detention at Kuje Correctional Centre following delays in meeting stringent bail conditions.

His detention followed allegations by Chinedu Ogah, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency in Ebonyi State, accusing him of publishing false reports.

Mr Alefia faced five cybercrime charges and remained in custody for two months while attempting to fulfil court-mandated bail requirements.

Rights activists criticised these conditions as unrealistic and “frivolous,” noting the difficulty defendants face in securing senior civil servants as sureties.

Earlier in January, rights activist and former AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore similarly rejected bail conditions requiring a Level 17 civil servant, describing them as “unrealistic and frivolous.”

FIJ had reported incidents to include the detention of their reporter, Daniel Ojukwu, who was abducted and held incommunicado for 10 days in May 2024 before being transferred to Abuja and released after public outcry.

Other FIJ reporters, including Emmanuel Uti, have also been summoned and detained by police units in Lagos and Abuja.

Also, Mr Soyombo had faced multiple arrests since the organisation’s launch in January 2021.

Rights groups and media advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about the use of police arrests, cybercrime charges, and restrictive bail conditions as tools to intimidate journalists and suppress investigative reporting.

Cybercrime law and media freedom concerns

The Cybercrimes Act and strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) have increasingly been criticised as tools to intimidate journalists and civil society.

In December, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) warned that authorities were exploiting legal loopholes to suppress criticism and limit civic space.

Veteran journalist Richard Akinnola described the Cybercrimes Act as being “weaponised by political leaders,” drawing parallels with the repressive Decree 4 of 1984.

The Centre for Journalism and Innovation Development (CJID) reported a rise in attacks on media practitioners nationwide, with Lagos recording persistent high-severity violations.

SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, warned that arbitrary arrests, digital surveillance, and SLAPP suits pose a serious threat to freedom of expression and democracy.

The organisation and NGE urged governments, security agencies, and lawmakers to release individuals detained solely for exercising their rights, withdraw SLAPP suits, review restrictive laws, including the Cybercrimes Act, protect journalists and human rights defenders, and respect court judgments.

They also appealed to the international community to hold Nigerian authorities accountable for human rights violations.

In a statement, Harrison clarified that he was neither arrested nor invited by the Edo State Police, but voluntarily presented himself for investigation. This counters VeryDarkMan’s earlier claim that he had the activist arrested.

He thanked his lawyers for their professionalism and for securing his release. Harrison further appreciated the Edo State Commissioner of Police for his professionalism, as he had expected to receive hostile treatment due to his years of advocacy against police brutality.

He also appreciated the police investigation team for their guidance throughout his detention. His statement read:

The All Progressives Congress has thrown its weight behind Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, ahead of future elections, openly backing him for a second term in office following his move to the ruling party.

The endorsement came as the APC urged voters in Rivers State to mobilise massive support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Fubara, describing the governor as a key political asset whose performance has strengthened the party’s standing in the state.

Speaking during a public engagement in Rivers, APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, praised the governor’s leadership and called on party members and residents to reward the administration with their votes.

His remarks were made at the commissioning of the Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters in Elimgbu.

Basiru congratulated both the governor and the party, noting that the quality of governance in Rivers reflects directly on the APC’s image at the national level.

“I congratulate our governor, I congratulate our party because when the governor is doing well, it simply means that our party is doing well,” he said.

He stressed that the most meaningful way to support the governor and the ruling party was through continued electoral backing at all levels.

“But the only way you can compensate the governor, compensate our party people of Rivers State, is to continue to vote for our party, the APC, in all elections.”

The APC scribe expressed strong confidence that Rivers State would deliver overwhelming votes for the party in future polls, including presidential and governorship elections.

“And I know that in the fullness of time, in the general election coming, the votes for our party, the vote for our governor, the vote for our president, will be very massive in Rivers State,” Basiru added.

Governor Fubara’s defection to the APC has reshaped the political landscape of the South-South, a region long considered a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party.

With his move, the ruling party has tightened its grip on the zone, marking a significant shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defection followed months of political tension in Rivers State, which saw a bitter fallout between the governor and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The crisis resulted in a split House of Assembly, impeachment threats, and eventually a six-month state of emergency imposed by President Tinubu.

Since joining the APC, party leaders have intensified efforts to position Fubara as the party’s leader in Rivers State and a central figure in its electoral strategy.

The open call for votes and public endorsements have further fueled speculation that the party is preparing the ground for his second-term bid.

Basiru’s comments also align with earlier statements credited to former presidential aide and ambassadorial nominee, Ita Enang, who indicated that there was an understanding within the APC leadership to offer automatic return tickets to governors who defected to the party.

By directly linking party loyalty with sustained support for Fubara’s administration, the APC leadership appears to be sending a clear signal about its plans for Rivers State.

In a related development, the National Security Adviser visited Governor Fubara in Port Harcourt on Monday, conveying President Tinubu’s satisfaction with the governor’s leadership style and handling of security-related matters in the state.

The visit was widely interpreted as another sign of growing federal confidence in Fubara’s administration amid ongoing political realignments in Rivers State.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, performed the switch-on ceremony to restore electricity to 33 communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area, ending a nine-year power outage.

The project was executed by the Abia State Government through the Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ASOPADEC).

Speaking at the power switch-on ceremony in Obehie on Monday, Governor Otti said the project aligned with his administration’s commitment to improving the living conditions of oil-producing communities that had suffered years of neglect.

He urged residents of Ukwa to safeguard the electrical infrastructure and ensure it is not vandalised or stolen.

“I believe we all have a responsibility to protect what is in our community. Nobody can do it better than you. Those thieves do not come from heaven; they are part and parcel of the community,” the governor said.

Responding to calls for the subsidisation of electricity bills following the restoration of power, Governor Otti directed that selected stakeholders should meet to explore possible solutions.

In his remarks, the Abia State Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, said the project involved the rehabilitation of 30 transformer distribution substations, the installation of 12 new transformers, and the restoration of 34 kilometres of high-tension lines as well as 3.5 kilometres of low-tension lines.

He added that the benefiting communities are currently being metered to ensure effective billing, stressing that electricity remains a critical component of Abia State’s development agenda.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has declared that the National Identification Number issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has now automatically become a Tax ID for individual Nigerians.

The Service announced this in a public awareness campaign on the new tax laws posted on X on Monday.

For registered businesses, the FIRS said their RC number issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) automatically becomes their tax ID under the new tax system.

This declaration comes amidst concerns over a provision of the tax laws mandating Tax ID for bank account ownership.

What the FIRS is saying 

According to the FIRS, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) billed to come into force from January 2026, mandates the use of Tax ID for certain transactions.

It, however, noted that this requirement is not new, adding that it has existed since the Finance Act 2019 and has been strengthened under the NTAA.

“The Tax ID unifies all TINS previously issued by FIRS and states IRS into a single identifier.  

“For individuals, your NIN automatically serves as your Tax ID, while for registered companies, your CAC RC number is used.  

“You do not need a physical card, the Tax ID is a unique number linked directly into your identity,” the FIRS stated.

The FIRS added that the new tax ID systems simplify identification, reduce duplication, closes loophole for tax evasion and ensure fairness so that everyone who earns taxable income contributes their share.

What this means 

With this development, all Nigerians with NIN now automatically have a Tax ID and can be easily brought into the tax net, provided they receive taxable income.

What you should know 

Amid the concerns by Nigerians over the new tax laws, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, had dismissed claims that all bank accounts are mandated to have Tax Identification Number (TIN) before January 2026.

• According to him, Section 4 of the NTAA requires a taxable person to require and obtain a Tax ID, and a taxable income is anyone who earns income through trade or any economic activity.
• He said individuals who do not earn income, such as students and dependents, do not need to obtain a Tax ID.
• He added that since 2020, anyone operating a bank account for businesses, or a corporate account, has needed a tax Identification number.

Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), on Monday repelled a coordinated terrorist attack along the Maiduguri–Damboa Main Supply Route (MSR) in Borno.

A credible military source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the attack occurred at about 3:10 pm on Dec. 22.

He said troops of 25 Brigade, while conducting MSR dominance patrol and escorting civilians along the Maiduguri–Damboa axis in Damboa Local Government Area, came under attack by ISWAP/JAS terrorists.

The source revealed that the terrorists reportedly employed multiple armed drones, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and an ambush in an attempt to disrupt military movement and civilian traffic along the route.

According to him, reinforcements from Brigade Headquarters were immediately mobilised to the location, enabling troops to counter the attack and stabilise the situation.

He said the troops had dominated the area and denied the terrorists freedom of action.

The source added that troops had sustained offensive operations across other sectors of OPHK under Operation Desert Sanity IV.

In the North Central, he said the troops under Operation Enduring Peace and Operation FANSAN YAMMA had continued to record successes against kidnapping and criminal activities in Kaduna and Plateau States.

The source said the troops of Sector 5 in Kaduna State, working with local vigilantes, apprehended two suspected kidnappers during an intelligence-led operation at Pari and Rahama villages in Kauru Local Government Area.

In Plateau, he said the troops of Sector 2 OPEP responded to a kidnapping incident in Panyam town, Mangu Local Government Area, where one person was abducted and another killed by suspected kidnappers, adding that efforts to rescue the abducted victim were ongoing.

“However, troops recorded a major breakthrough in Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau, where swift military response forced kidnappers to abandon a Reverend and his three children abducted from a church premises at Makundang village.

“The victims were successfully rescued, debriefed and reunited with their family, while troops continue the search for the fleeing kidnappers in surrounding mountainous areas,” he said.

The source reaffirmed the commitment of the military to sustaining pressure on terrorists and criminal elements across all theatres to ensure the safety of lives and property nationwide. (NAN)

Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. W. Shaibu, has commended Major General Emmanuel Jebe Atewe (rtd) for what he described as his outstanding and meritorious service to Nigeria.

Shaibu said Atewe exemplified discipline, professionalism and patriotism throughout his military career.

The commendation was delivered on behalf of the COAS by Brig-Gen. Folu Shonibare during the funeral service of Atewe’s late elder sister, Mrs Comfort Atewe, in Agbor, Delta State.

The Army chief was represented by a high-powered delegation of senior officers, a move that underscored the institution’s respect for the retired general.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shonibare described Atewe as a seasoned military leader, mentor and role model whose contributions left a lasting imprint on the Nigerian Army.

He said Atewe served Nigeria in “huge and enviable capacities” across different platforms of the Army, both locally and internationally.

According to him, Atewe’s leadership, discipline and strategic insight contributed significantly to the growth and professionalism of the service.

Shonibare also disclosed that the retired general played a key mentorship role in his own career.

“From my early days in the Army, General Atewe mentored me. His counsel, discipline and leadership style shaped my career. Even the Chief of Army Staff holds him in very high regard,” he said.

Members of the Army delegation noted that many of the positions held by Atewe during active service remained dream postings for serving officers.

The occasion was also used to urge Nigerian youths to embrace discipline, hard work, perseverance and integrity.

“Young people must learn from the life of General Atewe. With vision, discipline and commitment to service, it is possible to rise to the highest levels of leadership,” Shonibare said.

Although a solemn funeral, the event also served as a moment of honour and reflection on a legacy defined by service, mentorship, and patriotism.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Cross River State Caretaker Committee has expelled the party’s former State Chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, Esq., and upheld the suspension of the State Special Leader, Dr. Juliet Ebuo Diwa, over alleged misconduct.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Caretaker Committee held on 22 December 2025 at the party’s state secretariat, under the leadership of Ntufam Ekum Ekok Ojogu.

The committee said the expulsion of Eba followed the invocation of Article 21.5(v) of the APC Constitution, as amended on 26 March 2022. The motion was moved by the party’s Vice Chairman for the Central Senatorial District, Dr. Abubakar Efoli, and seconded by the Youth Leader (North), Dr. Joseph Idagu Ogar.

According to the committee, the constitutional provision stipulates that any member who institutes legal action against the party or its officers on matters relating to the discharge of party duties, without first exhausting internal dispute-resolution mechanisms, automatically stands expelled upon filing such action. It further provides that no appeal against the expulsion shall be entertained until the court action is withdrawn.

Based on this provision, the committee affirmed the expulsion of the former state chairman from the party.

In a related decision, the committee considered a formal letter from the Boki Local Government Area Chapter Chairman, Chief Engr. Kelvin Njong, JP, on the suspension of Dr. Juliet Ebuo Diwa.

Dr. Diwa was accused of gross misconduct at the ward level, including an alleged assault on the Ward Chairman, Mr. James Abang, which reportedly resulted in injury. After deliberation, the committee upheld her suspension, pending the outcome and recommendations of the party’s Disciplinary Committee.

The Caretaker Committee reaffirmed its commitment to party discipline, internal democracy, and strict adherence to the provisions of the APC Constitution.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has assured indigenes of Irele in Irele Local Government Area that the long-standing obaship dispute in the community will soon be resolved.

The governor gave the assurance during a thank-you visit to communities in Ese Odo, Okitipupa, Irele, and Ile Oluji/Oke Igbo Local Government Areas, following his victory in the last governorship election.

Aiyedatiwa said a monarch who would be acceptable to the people would be installed, stressing that the process must strictly follow the existing chieftaincy declaration.

He recalled that during the electioneering campaign, residents of Irele had clamoured for the installation of a king, adding that he made it clear that the responsibility rested with the people.

According to him, the two ruling houses have been directed to withdraw their cases from court to allow the selection process to move forward.

The governor disclosed that the warrant chiefs’ list is already with the state government and will be presented at the next State Executive Council meeting for approval, expressing confidence that the dispute would soon be resolved.

Clarifying that his visit was not to solicit votes, Aiyedatiwa reminded residents that they freely gave him their mandate about a year ago, delivering what he described as an unprecedented 18–0 electoral victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reflecting on the campaign period, the governor said he often arrived in the communities late at night but was met by residents who waited patiently to receive him, a gesture he described as a strong sign of trust and solidarity.

While acknowledging that all amenities could not be provided at once, Aiyedatiwa assured residents that electricity challenges would be addressed, stressing that development is a gradual process.

Reviewing the achievements of his administration, the governor highlighted milestones in education, infrastructure, and employment, including the renovation of schools, construction and rehabilitation of roads, and massive job creation.

“Over 2,000 teachers have been recruited into primary and secondary schools — the first major recruitment exercise in about 15 years-while pensioners are now being paid regularly,” he said.

On security, Aiyedatiwa said the protection of lives and property remains a top priority, noting that residents can now conduct their businesses without fear. He added that local private security outfits have been engaged to secure the waterways.

The governor also said his administration has deepened inclusive governance, making what he described as the highest number of political appointments in the history of Ondo State to ensure broad participation.

On investment and economic growth, Aiyedatiwa cited the revalidation of the Ondo Deep Seaport licence as a major breakthrough, explaining that errors associated with the licence under previous administrations had stalled the project until his government corrected them to attract investors.

He further disclosed that the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a modular refinery operator, with plans underway for the construction of housing units around the refinery.

Assuring residents of more dividends of democracy, the governor announced approval for key road projects, including the Agadagda–Obon Road and Sabomi Road.

He said each commissioner has been directed to nominate five kilometres of road from their local government areas for construction, with submissions already before the Ministry of Infrastructure, Lands and Housing.

According to him, the Agadagda–Obon–Ilerikiri Road, covering five kilometres, will be the first major road project in the area in over 10 years, urging residents to closely monitor and supervise the project.

Governor Hyacinth Alia presented the 2026 budget estimate to the Benue State House of Assembly on Monday, proposing a total outlay of ₦605.5 billion for the fiscal year.

The proposed 2026 budget represented a 10 per cent increase over the 2025 budget.

Presenting the estimate, the governor said that the theme reflected the administration’s development philosophy, with a strong focus on transforming rural communities as a pathway to inclusive growth and economic stability.

He noted that Benue’s rural areas, which formed the backbone of food production and cultural heritage, have suffered years of underinvestment, stressing that the 2026 budget was designed to reverse that trend.

A breakdown of the proposal showed that ₦281.09 billion had been earmarked for recurrent expenditure, accounting for 46.4 per cent of the total budget size.

The recurrent component represented a 21.69 per cent increase over the revised 2025 recurrent expenditure and was expected to cover the payment of the minimum wage, salaries, and other overhead and incidental costs of governance.

On capital expenditure, the governor proposed ₦342.42 billion to fund development projects aimed at sustaining economic gains and stimulating growth in the rural economy.

The capital allocation reflected a 1.66 per cent change over the revised 2024 capital budget, with emphasis on infrastructure, livelihood support and long-term development initiatives.

Mr Alia described the presentation as an expression of duty, responsibility and optimism, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to addressing the aspirations of the people of Benue.

The speaker of the assembly, Alfred Emberga, thanked the governor for presenting what he described as the third budget of the administration in line with constitutional provisions.

The speaker said that the presentation reflected the governor’s vision and commitment to improving the welfare of Benue citizens and pledged the assembly’s readiness to give the estimates prompt consideration.

He assured that the house would work speedily to process and return the budget, urging ministries, departments and agencies to cooperate with standing committees during budget defence to ensure passage of a workable, people-oriented and transparent 2026 budget.

Police operatives in Benue State have successfully freed 19 travellers who were abducted by suspected armed bandits along the Ohimini–Otukpo Road in Ohimini Local Government Area.

Security sources disclosed to Zagazola Makama that the abduction took place in the early hours of December 22 after gunmen mounted a roadblock at Mechanic Village on the Ohimini–Otukpo corridor and intercepted two commercial vehicles, forcing their occupants into the surrounding forest.

According to the sources, the attack was reported at about 2:00 a.m., involving a Toyota Hiace bus travelling from Oju to Ibadan with nine passengers.

Another vehicle, a Toyota Hummer bus belonging to Plateau Riders Company, was also ambushed.

The bus, driven by Igoche John from Jos, Plateau State, was heading to Bayelsa State with 11 passengers on board.

Following the distress call, police authorities immediately deployed patrol teams and tactical units to the area. Operatives advanced to the scene and carried out an extensive search of nearby bushes.

The strong police presence reportedly pressured the attackers to flee, abandoning the captives. As a result, 19 passengers were rescued safely without any ransom being paid.

After preliminary questioning, the rescued individuals were cleared and allowed to proceed with their respective journeys.

However, one passenger, identified as Boniface Ndukwe from Jos, Plateau State, is still suspected to be in the custody of the kidnappers.

Police authorities stated that operations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and ensure the safe rescue of the remaining victim.

Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has made an allegation involving a wealthy Nigerian family who reportedly lost a loved one and a large amount of money after relying on spiritual healing for cancer.

Naija News reports that Kuti spoke in a video that has been widely shared online, where he narrated how the family turned to faith after doctors overseas reportedly told them that nothing more could be done medically for the woman, who was battling terminal cancer.

According to him, the family brought the woman back to Nigeria and took her to the Redeemed Christian Church of God camp, believing prayers would restore her health.

He said the church environment was filled with religious activities and assurances that she would recover despite her condition.

Kuti claimed that after days of prayers at the camp, the woman eventually died, leaving her relatives shocked and heartbroken.

He further alleged that the family spent about $250,000 during the period, driven by hope that spiritual intervention would save her life.

The singer also alleged that after the woman’s death, Pastor Enoch Adeboye told the family to stop crying and asked them to kneel beside her body while he went in to pray for her revival.

Kuti claimed that after about an hour, the woman did not come back to life, and the family was later told to go home.

Kuti criticised the encouragement of faith healing in cases of terminal illness, stating that such beliefs can give families false hope and leave them emotionally unprepared for death.

He argued that situations like this often end in deep pain, financial loss, and lasting trauma for those involved.
