SOKOTO:– As Christians across Nigeria and the world mark Christmas, the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, has urged Nigerians not to surrender to despair despite the nation’s deepening insecurity, economic hardship and social anxieties, describing the season as one of enduring joy, hope and divine presence even in times of tribulation.

He said Christmas arrives at a moment when Nigeria appears trapped in a valley of violence and sorrow, with citizens daily confronted by insecurity, fear and uncertainty, yet the message of the birth of Christ remains a powerful reminder that God abides with man even in darkness.

Bishop Kukah recalled the words of Prophet Isaiah that people who walked in darkness have seen a great light, stressing that the light of Christ is one which darkness cannot overcome, and that Nigerians must deliberately choose hope over despair.

He challenged political leaders at all levels to strengthen their resolve to alleviate the suffering of the people, noting that while greed among the elite appears insatiable, Nigeria still possesses enough resources to care for its citizens if justice, equity and compassion are prioritised.

The cleric noted that Christ remains the cornerstone of the Christian faith, warning against the temptation to grow weary or despondent in the face of prolonged violence, communal conflicts and loss of lives that have torn families and communities apart across the country.

Drawing parallels with the first Christmas, Bishop Kukah reminded Nigerians that Jesus was born into poverty and violence, as King Herod ordered the killing of innocent children, a tragedy still commemorated by the Church, underscoring that suffering has always accompanied redemption.

He said it was symbolic that the poor and vulnerable shepherds were the first to receive the good news of Christ’s birth, emphasising that Christmas calls on Nigerians to renew their strength and refuse to give up, trusting in God for restoration.

The bishop lamented that violence continues to stalk the cribs of innocent children today, both globally and within Nigeria, where abductions, displacement, abuse and exploitation have robbed thousands of children of safety, dignity and a hopeful future.

He recalled the painful memories of the Chibok and Dapchi schoolgirls and other victims, noting that similar tragedies continue to unfold across the country, exposing children to early marriage, slavery and psychological trauma, with devastating consequences for national development.

Bishop Kukah stressed that Nigerians must renew their belief that evil can be defeated, insisting that the battle against insecurity and moral decay is one for the nation’s soul and cannot be outsourced or solved by force alone.

He urged citizens to reflect honestly on what has gone wrong and to draw from the shared goodwill that has historically bound Nigerians together, reminding them that the nation has mourned, suffered and buried its dead collectively.

According to him, faith must not be abandoned in moments of darkness, nor should Nigerians resort to the weapons of hatred and revenge, as the true instruments that cannot be taken away are faith, prayer and steadfast witness to justice and truth.

The bishop identified toxic politics, greed and selfishness as the roots of much of the violence, arguing that those perpetrating crimes are products of societal failure, poor governance, miseducation and moral collapse.

He observed that northern Nigeria has become a major theatre of violence largely due to entrenched poverty, illiteracy and disease, warning that the nation must either renovate its values, educate its people or risk collective ruin.

Bishop Kukah reminded Christians that persecution is not new to the faith, noting that Christianity was born under severe oppression, yet endured and overcame empires through sacrifice, resilience and unwavering trust in God.

He said Christians must reject violence as a response to violence, recalling Christ’s command to put away the sword, and affirming that true victory comes through faith, patience and moral courage, not brute force.

The bishop called for prayers for all victims of violence, those killed through abduction, banditry, robbery or communal clashes and urged Nigerians to honour them by working towards a society where peace and justice reign.

He encouraged Nigerians to see Christmas not merely as a date or celebration, but as a vocation to reflect the face of Christ through love, reconciliation and service to others, especially the vulnerable.

Despite the dangers confronting the nation, Bishop Kukah said Nigerians must continue to act as ambassadors of Christ, carrying messages of peace, joy and reconciliation in a world marked by fear and uncertainty.

He concluded by expressing gratitude for the safe return of abducted persons and commending all who worked and prayed for their release, while stressing that such ordeals must end, and wishing Nigerians a Christmas filled with renewed hope, faith and determination for national renewal.

Nigeria is set to commence full implementation of its End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Policy in 2026, a move aimed at strengthening automotive waste management, curbing environmental pollution, and generating employment nationwide.

Under the policy, vehicle manufacturers, importers, owners, and recycling operators will be required to comply with regulations governing the proper treatment and disposal of obsolete and decommissioned vehicles.

The development is contained in a document released by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), which details the Federal Government’s strategy for rolling out the policy across the country.

According to the Council, the 2026 rollout is designed to fully activate existing ELV and automotive waste recycling regulations nationwide.

NADDC noted that implementation will be supported by extensive awareness and sensitisation campaigns targeted at vehicle owners, mechanics, transport unions, and the general public, highlighting the environmental, economic, and safety advantages of ELV recycling.

The Council also disclosed plans to introduce capacity-building initiatives to equip recycling plant operators and auto technicians with the skills required for safe, standardised, and environmentally responsible ELV dismantling and handling.

“The implementation of the End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Policy in 2026 will focus on putting the approved ELV and other automotive waste recycling regulations into full operation across Nigeria,” the document read in part.

It added, “Overall, the 2026 implementation of the ELV Policy aims to reduce environmental pollution. improve automotive waste management, create jobs, generate revenue, and support sustainable development of the Nigerian automotive sector.”

NADDC further explained that the licensing and certification of ELV collectors, dismantlers, and recycling facilities will be undertaken in collaboration with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

To enhance oversight and compliance, the Council plans to establish a national data management system that will track vehicles, recycling plants, and trained technicians, while also supporting monitoring and long-term planning.

Additionally, NADDC revealed plans to encourage research and development in vehicle recycling, as well as set up a pilot ELV recycling plant to assess the feasibility, safety, and efficiency of the initiative.

Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS)

The Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, has warned the men and officers of the Service to desist from acts capable of damaging the image of the agency.

He gave the warning at the decoration of 16,582 newly promoted senior and lower cadre officers of the Service on Tuesday in Abuja.

Nwakuche, who commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as a landmark achievement in terms of the highest number of officers ever promoted in the history of the NCoS, said any officer found guilty of acts of corruption will not be spared.

He said the best way to show appreciation and reciprocate the good gesture of the President is by showing “higher standards of discipline, integrity, leadership, and professionalism.”
“Let me emphasize that promotion is not an end in itself; it is a renewed call to service — towards humane custody, effective rehabilitation, public safety, and national development.

“As a Service, we must continue to grow as a disciplined, professional, and reform-driven institution worthy of public trust. Remember this: To whom much is given, much is expected,” the CG stated.

He continued: “Let me issue a strong and unequivocal warning to all officers and men of the Service: this administration has zero tolerance for acts of indiscipline, particularly trafficking, compromise, or any form of unwholesome association with inmates.
“Such actions erode public trust, endanger institutional security, and sabotage the reform efforts of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

I wish to state clearly that this administration will not condone such misconduct and will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law and relevant service regulations against any officer or staff found to be involved, regardless of rank or position.”

Giving a breakdown of the promotion, he said 11,417 were within the senior cadre, while 4,253 were junior officers.

“Specifically, 11,417 officers were promoted within the senior cadre, while 4,253 junior officers were promoted to their next ranks.

“In addition, 128 junior officers were upgraded to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Corrections (ASC) following the acquisition of the relevant academic qualifications.

Eighty-nine (89) correctional assistants were upgraded to the inspectorate cadre upon obtaining diplomas and NCE qualifications, while 689 chief correctional assistants were converted to inspectors of corrections after successfully attending and passing the prescribed conversion course,” he explained.

The Service commended six officers who received special promotion to the rank of Inspector of Corrections in recognition of gallantry and exceptional performance.

“Your actions exemplify courage, professionalism, and devotion to duty, and they reflect the finest traditions of the Nigerian Correctional Service,” Nwakuche told the gallant officers.

The traditional ruler of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom, in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, His Royal Highness, Igwe Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr (Ubojene II), has released the list of his cabinet members for easy administration and effective service delivery, with a university don and renowned journalist, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, appointed as the Palace Secretary and Head of the Palace Media.

The monarch also appointed the former State Director, National Orientation Agency, Dr. Augustine Okolie, as the Special Adviser on General Matters, while a former Local Government chairmanship candidate of the United Progressive Party (UPP) was appointed as the Personal Assistant on Special Duties.

The appointments also became the first of their kind in the community in 26 years.

In a statement personally signed by the monarch and made available to newsmen in Enugu on Sunday, he stated that the nominees were carefully selected across clans, villages, and wards in the community based on good track records, academic excellence, service to the community, competence, among others.

He stated that the selected persons will serve in various capacities such as Igwe’s Cabinet, Igwe’s Advisory Council, Ndi Ichie, and Cabinet Mothers.

Igwe Ogbonna also called on all the nominated sons and daughters of the land to prioritise community development and unity while discharging their duties.

He further called on the good people of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom to give all the needed support to the appointed chiefs, sons, and daughters, as the goal is to achieve disruptive progress in the community.

Speaking with newsmen, the newly appointed Palace Secretary, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, expressed his joy over the appointment, which makes him one of the youngest in the state to hold such a revered position.

He stated that it is a call to serve and assured that he would do his best to deliver on the assignment given.

The Police in Imo State have arrested a 43- year- old man, Kelechi Nwosu, native of Umuobi Umukam in Obollo Autonomous Community, Isiala Mbano, for allegedly defiling his seven year- old niece.

The suspect was arrested by his kinsmen and handed over to Police at Isiala Mbano Divisional Headquarters from where he was taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, in Owerri.

The incident was brought to the public domain through the effort of a human rights organization, Stand For Humanity Foundation, the group that escalated the matter that led to the picking up of the suspect.

The group’s Coordinator Chidiebube Okeoma, disclosed that the organization collaborated with the suspect’s kinsmen to effect his arrest.

He informed that medical investigations carried out at the Police clinic in Owerri revealed that the child was abused.

A statement made by the minor revealed that the suspect defied her on two separate occasions when everyone had left the home for the farm.

The organization commended the youth of the Community for demonstrating that they are true apostles of justice and urge other Communities in the State and beyond to emulate the youths of the Community in fighting child abuses in the society.

The organization also commended the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal and Investigations Department – Owerri, for the professional commitment he deployed since the incident was reported to him.

The Spokesperson for the Police in the State, Henry Okoye, disclosed that the suspect would be arraigned at the conclusion of the investigations by the Command.

A 22-storey building located on Martins Street, Marina, Lagos State, caught fire on Wednesday, 24th December.

According to information credited to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire started on the 4th floor and has spread to the 6th.

At the time of filing this report, firefighters are on the ground working to contain the fire, Naija News reports.

According to a situation report by LASEMA, the fire at the building, which serves as a warehouse for clothing materials, started at about 5 p.m.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, narrated that the number of casualties could not be ascertained yet as rescue operations were still ongoing.

“Upon arrival of the Shark Response Team at the scene, a 22-storey building (Great Nigeria Insurance House) was found to have been engulfed by fire.

“Preliminary investigation conducted by the Shark Response Team revealed that the fire started from one of the apartments on the fourth floor and quickly gained momentum, spreading to other parts of the floor and escalating upwards to the sixth floor within the 22-storey building.

“Currently, the number of casualties cannot be ascertained, as firefighting operations are still ongoing,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

Similarly, the Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said there has been no record of casualties as firefighting and rescue efforts continue.

“The fire is currently affecting up to the fifth floor of a 25-storey building. It originated on the fifth floor and has spread downwards from that level.

“The affected building is primarily used for warehouse storage and the sale of clothing materials, with corporate offices and a few shops also located within the premises. There has been no record of casualties as firefighting continues,” Adeseye stated.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on Nigerians to reject what it called distorted or falsified tax law, stressing the importance of inclusivity and fairness in the formulation of fiscal policies.

The NLC emphasised that laws affecting workers must be carefully crafted to avoid serious errors or political manipulations that could harm the majority.

The President of the Labour union, Joe Ajaero, in a statement titled, “Our hope lies in collective action”, highlighted the need for workers to unite in protecting their interests, wages, pensions, and dignity.

He called for social and tax justice, insisting that all citizens must have access to quality healthcare, education, and security, while workers’ rights and rewards are respected.

“It is better to patiently craft a law that is broadly co-created and owned than rush into one filled with serious errors and outright political manipulations.

“We must insist on social justice where all citizens have access to dignity, good healthcare, and quality education; greater equity for workers where labour is justly rewarded and rights are respected; and a safe and secure nation where lives and properties are guaranteed and people can move about their businesses without fear or intimidation,” the statement read in part.

Ajaero further emphasized that the power of workers lies in unity and collective action. He urged Nigerians to stand together to resist policies that inflict suffering and exploit the population, warning against divisions based on tribe, religion, or region.

NLC demands total rejection of tax law

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has approved the appointment of 15 aides as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s administrative and strategic framework.

Naija News reports that the appointments, which cut across Special Advisers, Advisers and Senior Special Assistants, were announced on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

The development was disclosed by the Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy to the APC chairman, Abimbola Tokin.

Tokin explained that the appointments were aimed at improving coordination, policy formulation and stakeholder engagement at the party’s national secretariat.

According to him, the newly appointed aides are expected to bring their wealth of experience and professionalism to bear in supporting the national chairman in driving the party’s agenda.

Tokin noted that Prof. Yilwatda congratulated the appointees and charged them to show dedication, loyalty and commitment to the ideals and objectives of the APC.

“The appointments take immediate effect,” he said.

Those appointed as Special Advisers include Sen. Danladi Sankara (Political Matters), Daniel Oritsegbubemi (National Assembly Matters), and Dr Sorochi Longdet (Research, Strategy and Planning).

The Advisers are Mr Jubrin Surajo (Community Engagement), Mr Paul Domsing (Special Duties), Mr Suleiman Bukari (Intelligence Coordination), and Prof. Taiwo Balofin, who will serve as Honorary Adviser on Diaspora Coordination and Mobilisation.

The Senior Special Assistants appointed include Imran Muhammad (New Media), Mildred Bako (Civil Society Organisations), Juliet Obinta (Youth Mobilisation), and Ismaila Mohammed (Conflict Management).

Tragedy struck the Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday as two serving lawmakers were reported dead within minutes of each other, sending shockwaves across the state’s political landscape.

Reports indicate that Aminu Saadu, representing Ungogo constituency, fell ill shortly after arriving at the Assembly earlier in the day and was immediately rushed to a hospital, where doctors later confirmed his death.

While the lawmaker representing Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, reportedly passed away barely minutes after news broke of the death of his colleague, Hon. Aminu Sa’adu.

The close timing of the deaths of the two legislators, both prominent members of the Kano State House of Assembly, has left lawmakers, political stakeholders, and residents of the state in deep shock and mourning.

On this Holy Day, I wish all Christians in Nigeria and around the world a Merry Christmas. I thank God for the opportunity to serve as the leader of our great country, and I pray for peace in our land, especially among individuals of differing religious beliefs.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, let us also reflect on the many contributions that Christians in Nigeria, as followers of Christ, have made and continue to make toward the progress of our country.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed sadness over the loss of its 7th Director-General (DG), Brigadier General Soyemi Ayodele Sofoluwe (Rtd.), who passed on recently.

During a condolence visit to the deceased’s family in Lagos, the incumbent DG, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, paid tribute to him for his remarkable contributions to the growth of the NYSC during his tenure as Chief Executive.

The DG described his death as a great loss, not only to the family, but also the NYSC and the entire nation.

He prayed God to grant the late General eternal rest, and comfort his family.

Nafiu also assured the widow and matriarch of the Sofoluwe family, Colonel Kehinde Sofoluwe (Rtd.) of NYSC’s support during the funeral rites.

Sofoluwe, fondly called ‘Oga Show’ by Corps Members and NYSC staff, was known and loved for his amiable, compassionate, and witty personality.

He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.

Lady angry at boyfriend over Christmas money

Seconds into the TikTok video, a WhatsApp chat was displayed, showing the conversation between the lady and her boyfriend.

According to her, @bluzie05, her boyfriend sent her the money to plait her hair and instructed that she should not remove the hairstyle until a specific date, which she mentioned.

After sending the money, the boyfriend told her:

“Money wey I send give you so, na March you for lose the hair o, make them tight am well oo.”

In response, the lady fired back and described his statement as rubbish talk.

She said:

“I no really understand, which kind rubbish talk be all these ones. You send me 35,000 make I take do hair and I go use am till March. No be your mate dey send their babe 200k, 500k no dey give me condition o.”

She explained that she only wanted to keep the hairstyle for December and asked her boyfriend to send his account number so she could refund the money if he didn’t agree.

She continued:

“Na only December I wan carry this hair. If you know say you no go gree, send your account number make I send your money back. Which kind rubbish talk be this, I no dey like am.”

Her statement got him furious, as he responded angrily to her words:

“All these your pickup line, you go cut am off o. I send you 35k make you take plait hair, the only thing wey I talk be say no lose am till March. Simple as that, I no talk another thing. You come dey complain say babe wey dey give their babe 200k, 500k. If e easy, go find the boy wey dey give 200k and 500k. Which kind mumu talk be that one.”When me and you meet, you plait hair? A Nigerian lady has stirred conversations online after opening up about a missed romantic opportunity that ended almost as quickly as it began.

In a viral video shared by Teniola on X, she explained that the man in question was tall, attractive, and appeared genuinely serious about pursuing a romantic relationship with her.

She explained that she did not want to accept his advances immediately because she felt everything needed time to process.

However, before she could circle back and soften her stance, the man had already disappeared completely.

In her words, she said:

“I give in easily before. So this time, I tried to act hard to get. Before I turned back, he was nowhere to be found. Men, if you’re asking a woman out, always be patient. And the guy is tall and fine. I’m so pained.”

Now she is left with regret, along with a hard lesson learned.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Working Committee, NWC, loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has approved the appointment of a Caretaker Committee in Oyo State.

A statement by Umar Bature, the National Organising Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, named Prof Abdulrahman Akinoso as Chairman and Biola Olanipekun as Secretary.

The statement titled: “Appointment of Oyo State Caretaker Committee,” said: “The National Working Committee (NWC) of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has approved the appointment of the following as OYO STate Caretaker Committee.

“Accordingly, the assignment takes effect from December 24th 2025 and the Committee is charged with the responsibility of running the affairs of the Party in Oyo State as stipulated in Section 21(2) (a-b) of our Party Constitution for a period not exceeding 30 days.”

Those appointed include, Prof Abdulrahman Akinoso – Chairman, Mr Adio daudaTolani – member, Hon Ali Hammed Okesola – Member, Prince Adewale Lukuman Adewale – Member, Mr Tunde Sikiru Adeniran – Member, Alhaja Risikat Kola Popoola – Member, and Hon Kabiru Adesokan- Member.

A former Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Abiodun Adigun-Hammed, has predicted a landslide victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Oyo State in the 2027 elections.

Adigun-Hammed described as “unthinkable” the idea that President Tinubu would entrust the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State to Governor Seyi Makinde. 

His comments came in reaction to statements attributed to Makinde during a media chat on Tuesday, in which the governor allegedly claimed that former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike offered to deliver Oyo State to Tinubu—a proposal Makinde purportedly declined.

In a statement, Adigun-Hammed dismissed Makinde’s claim as false, asserting that the governor could not be trusted with any political arrangement. He cited Makinde’s alleged betrayals of former governor and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, Senator Sarafadeen Alli, and other political stakeholders who supported him in 2019, warning that such behavior could extend to anyone.

The former lawmaker also raised questions about a contract Makinde said he was awarded in 1997, reportedly valued at $1 million, urging Nigerians to seek clarity on its execution.

Adigun-Hammed further claimed that the APC was gaining momentum in Oyo State, arguing that residents were beginning to see through what he called Makinde’s “pretence and political games.”

“Makinde has proved to be a serial liar and pretender. How can his ally ask President Tinubu to give Oyo State to ‘arrange’ for us, when we have three senators, nine House of Representatives members, three former deputy governors, ex-ministers, and experienced politicians? Such a claim is a lie from the pit of hell,” he said.

He also accused Makinde of failing to acknowledge the support he received from the President and other stakeholders during his re-election bid in 2023, instead repaying them with falsehoods.

Looking ahead to 2027, Adigun-Hammed expressed full confidence that President Tinubu would defeat Governor Makinde—and any candidate Makinde supports—predicting a decisive victory for the APC in Oyo State.
