Presidency Breaks Silence on Sacking of Gbajabiamila as Tinubu’s Chief of Staff
The Presidency has reacted to widespread reports claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Femi Gbajabiamila as his Chief of Staff.
According to the report, it alleged that the President had appointed his Principal Private Secretary, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, as a replacement.
The reports, which gained traction on social media, sparked intense public discussion and speculation about an alleged shake-up within the Presidency.
Several posts claimed the decision was based on information from unnamed “insider” sources, raising concerns about possible internal changes at the highest level of government.
However, the Presidency has firmly denied the claim. It described the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said there was no truth in the story circulating online.
“The attention of the Presidency has been drawn to a viral falsehood circulating on social media suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has replaced his Chief of Staff, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, with his Principal Private Secretary, Hakeem Muri-Okunola. There is absolutely no truth to this story. We advise Nigerians to disregard it entirely.
“The Chief of Staff remains in his position. The Principal Private Secretary likewise remains in his role. Hakeem Muri-Okunola has not replaced Femi Gbajabiamila as Chief of Staff.”
The Presidency stressed that both officials continue to carry out their assigned duties without any change in status. It also warned against the spread of unverified information capable of causing confusion or tension within government circles.
According to Onanuga, the report was deliberately fabricated by individuals bent on spreading falsehood and creating unnecessary discord within the administration.
“The viral claim is a fabrication by mischievous purveyors of fake news whose sole aim is to create disharmony within the government. We reiterate that news media should always verify their information before publishing or sharing on social media,” he said.
The statement urged Nigerians to rely on official channels for credible information regarding government activities and appointments.
It also called on media organisations and social media users to exercise caution and professionalism in the handling of sensitive political information.
Femi Gbajabiamila, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, was appointed Chief of Staff shortly after President Tinubu assumed office.
Hakeem Muri-Okunola, a former Lagos State Head of Service, currently serves as the President’s Principal Private Secretary.

The lady, @lashed_by_oyiza, alleged that she was pushed down the stairs and claimed she sustained varying degrees of injuries.
In her TikTok video, she informed her followers about her situation, saying:

Speaking further about what led to the incident, she explained how it escalated, saying:
“Me, I came to collect my child. His father, his mother, his sister all of them gathered and started beating me. They threw me down the staircase and carried my child inside the house. My child is 2 years old. You people should come o.”

Six members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing deep internal crises within the PDP and what they described as poor governance in the state.
The lawmakers announced their decision on Thursday through separate letters addressed to the Speaker of the House.
Those who defected are Bashar Aliyu Gummi (Gummi I), Nasiru Abdullahi Maru (Maru North), Bashir Abubakar Masama (Bukkuyum North), Bashir Bello (Bungudu West), Amiru Ahmad Keta (Tsafe West), and Muktar Nasir Kaura (Kaura North).
In their letters, titled “Notice of Resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC)”, the lawmakers said persistent crises within the PDP forced their decision.
They said the crises had resulted in factional leadership within the party.
One of the letters read: “I write to formally inform the Honourable Speaker and Honourable Members of this Honourable House of my decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to lingering and unresolved crises in my party, which have resulted in factional leadership.”
The lawmakers said their defection was in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
They cited Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows a lawmaker to defect if there is a division within their political party.
They also accused the PDP-led government in Zamfara State, under Governor Dauda Lawal, of poor leadership.
According to them, the administration has failed to adequately address insecurity in the state and has not fulfilled its campaign promises.
Another part of the letters read: “My decision is in line with Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and is also based on the poor leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal, particularly his failure to address security challenges and fulfil campaign promises.”
Two persons have been confirmed dead after a bicycle conveying two youths rammed into a commercial jeep along Okigwe road in Owerri, Imo state, on Christmas Eve.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were returning from a football training session in Orji, Owerri north local government area, when the collision occurred.
They said the crash was head-on and the youths died instantly at the scene, causing a traffic gridlock on the busy Okigwe road, leaving Christmas travellers stranded.
Eyewitnesses said traffic wardens struggled to control the situation as some youths reportedly swarmed the area, triggering a stampede that worsened the congestion.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deceased were from Amatta in Ikeduru local government area.
The source said the bodies were later evacuated by an ambulance and taken to a mortuary.
Henry Okoye, police public relations officer in Imo, said investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the Orji accident that claimed two lives.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said his administration places a high premium on the health and wellbeing of every Lagosian, stressing that no resident should feel forgotten, especially during a season associated with love, hope and celebration.
The governor made the remark on Thursday while addressing patients and staff of Gbagada General Hospital. He was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Dayo Lajide.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the decision to hold the Christmas celebration in hospital wards was deliberate, aimed at identifying with patients who are away from their families and reinforcing the administration’s people-centred healthcare policy.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has deployed 152 personnel in Ebonyi to ensure safe roads during the yuletide.
The Sector Commander, Daniel Asanya, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abakaliki.
He said the deployment covered 258 special marshals across its six units in the state.
Asanya said that the zero tolerance to road crashes programme would last till Jan. 15, when it is assumed that the traffic flow from the festivities must have reduced.
He said emphasis would be on ensuring free flow of traffic and prompt evacuation of damaged vehicles on the roads, especially articulated vehicles.
“The public is advised to call our free toll number 122 for immediate evacuation of damaged vehicles on the roads.
“We have identified hot spots across the state and have ensured adequate deployment of personnel to such areas.
“The presence of our personnel on the roads has positive effects on drivers as they are aware of our zero tolerance to flouting traffic regulations,” he said.
According to Asanya, the corps will sustain enlightenment to sensitise motorists to obey traffic regulations during the period because only the living celebrate.
“The predominant mode of transportation in the state is the tricycle, and we continue enlightening tricyclists of its limitations. The tricycle is not enclosed as vehicles and stands on three wheels.
“They should apply the passenger watch approach of checking the tricyclist whenever his actions are inimical to their safety,” he said.

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, on Friday, December 12, 2025, unveiled the Nigeria Customs Service’s maiden Tombola Night funfair as part of efforts to strengthen staff morale and promote work-life balance among officers.
The event, held at the Service’s headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, was chaired by Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs (DCG) in charge of Strategic Research and Policy, DCG Dera Nnadi, on behalf of CGC Adeniyi.
Speaking at the event, DCG Nnadi said the initiative reflected the CGC’s consistent emphasis on the welfare and well-being of Customs officers.
“The CGC has always stressed the importance of work-life balance for officers who are daily involved in revenue generation, trade facilitation and national security,” DCG Nnadi said.
He explained that the Tombola Night provides officers with an opportunity to step away from the rigours of operational duties.
“It is not only about revenue collection and border control. Customs officers also need space to unwind, improve their emotional state and maintain good health,” he added.
DCG Nnadi described the Tombola tradition as a regimental practice inherited from the military, noting that it promotes discipline, transparency and unity.
“It is an opportunity to mix, interact and distribute gifts in a disciplined and transparent environment, as we have witnessed today,” he said.
He described the maiden edition as a success and called for the event to be organised more frequently.
“We should not wait till the end of the year. It can be organised mid-year, and Commands with mess facilities across the zones should replicate this initiative,” DCG Nnadi said.
He also noted that the presence of representatives from the Nigerian Army, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), and other ministries, departments, and agencies, added value to the event.
“This platform allows us to interact with colleagues from other agencies and exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere,” he said.
Also speaking, the Comptroller in charge of Special Duties, Comptroller Haniel Hadisson, said the event underscored the CGC’s commitment to staff welfare.
“This initiative shows that the CGC genuinely cares about officers and men beyond revenue generation and anti-smuggling operations,” Comptroller Hadisson said.
He commended members of the planning committee for the successful organisation of the event and expressed optimism that future editions would receive the CGC’s approval.
A highlight of the night was the raffle draw, during which the star prize was won by a Customs officer, while about 60 per cent of the prizes went to invited guests, reflecting what officials described as the spirit of fairness and sportsmanship.

Controversial Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has declared that foreign involvement cannot be ruled out in terror attacks.
Gumi said Nigeria is on the radar of some Western countries for clandestine operations aimed at justifying external intervention.
He made the remark in a post on X while reacting to a Kaduna-based activist, Mahdi, who accused a former American envoy, Russell Hanks, of masterminding the bombing of a bookshop at Durbar Hotel in Kaduna in 1995, during the era of former Head of State Sani Abacha.

There was tight security around major recreational parks around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday as residents in large numbers trooped out to celebrate Christmas with family members.
Well armed operatives of a combined team of the Police, Department of State Security (DSS), Civil Defence, other paramilitary organizations and members of the local vigilantes were sighted at the popular Millennium park and the Unity Fountain.
The tightened security was also observed at the privately owned Magic Land Amusement park and other places.
At the Millennium park, residents were not allowed to move in with their vehicles, but directed to the Unity Fountain to park and then walk back into the expansive recreational green area of the Millennium park.
While no security operatives spoke on the tight security arrangements, it may not be unconnected with the breach of security in Maiduguri, Borno State, following a bomb blast inside a mosque, said to have killed some worshippers while also injuring many.
Earlier, FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike had directed security agencies to beef up security across the nation’s capital, to ensure that residents celebrate the Yuletide with adequate security.
Also, the FCT Police Commissioner, CP Miller Dantawaye had also directed officers of the Command to conduct a show of force and confidence building patrol across strategic locations within the FCT metropolis.
New Telegraph learnt that the exercise was aimed at boosting public confidence, deterring criminal elements, and demonstrating the Command’s operational readiness to safeguard residents and visitors ahead of the festive season.

The Jigawa State Police Command says it has arrested several suspected drug dealers and recovered more than 4,600 wraps and quantities of illicit drugs during raids across the state.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Shi’isu Lawan Adam, on Wednesday, the police said the arrests were made during intelligence-led operations carried out in different local government areas as part of efforts to curb drug trafficking and related crimes.
According to the statement, one of the suspects, Mutari Shu’aibu, a 20-year-old man from Dutse Local Government Area, was arrested alongside others in towns including Guri, Gumel, Sara, Shuwarin, Sundimina, Kazaure, Miga/Madori, Ringim, Birnin Kudu, and Kafin Hausa.
The police said the suspects were found with a total of 4,658 wraps and quantities of suspected hard drugs, believed to be meant for sale within local communities. The drugs have been recovered and documented as exhibits.
After investigations, the police said all the suspects were charged to court.
Commending the operation, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Dahiru Muhammad, praised the officers involved for their conduct.
He said the command would not slow down its fight against drug-related crimes.
“The Commissioner of Police commended the officers involved for their professionalism, diligence, and commitment to duty,” the statement said.
It added that the police boss “reiterated that the command will not relent in clamping down on drug trafficking, abuse, and other criminal activities that threaten public safety and the future of youths in the state.”
The Jigawa State Police Command also appealed to residents to support the fight against crime by sharing useful information with security agencies.
The command assured the public of its commitment to keeping the state safe and free from drugs.

The Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agaba’Idu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John PhD CON, has declared 23 December as Idoma Day, to be observed annually by Idoma people worldwide, while unveiling a far reaching blueprint aimed at safeguarding Idoma identity, restoring unity and repositioning culture as a pillar of development.
The royal proclamation was made at the Idoma Cultural Day celebration held on 23 December 2025, under the broader vision of the Idoma International Carnival.
Describing the occasion as a day of pride, remembrance and renewal, the monarch said the gathering was neither for colour nor spectacle alone, but a deliberate declaration of identity and a return to the values, memory and heritage that define the Idoma people.
According to him, Idoma Cultural Day represents the public presentation of the people’s language, rites, dances, proverbs, attire, folklore, food, values and moral order, warning that a people without culture risk losing both direction and future.
The Och’Idoma commended Ochetoha K’Idoma for assuming responsibility for this year’s celebration, praising the President General, Professor Yakubu Aboki Ochefu, for what he described as clarity of thought and seriousness of purpose. He stressed that sociocultural institutions thrive only under focused leadership anchored on vision, structure, discipline and continuity.
He also paid glowing tribute to Chief Dr Edwin Ochai, President of the Idoma Association in the United States and a leading driver of the Idoma International Carnival, noting that for thirteen years he sustained the initiative largely with personal resources to ensure that Idoma culture did not fade into silence.
Beyond celebration, the monarch spoke candidly on threats confronting Idoma cultural heritage, identifying insecurity and displacement, erosion of language especially in homes and the diaspora, cultural shame among youths, fragmentation of cultural structures, poor documentation and social media ridicule as major dangers.
To address these challenges, he outlined clear pathways including strengthened community vigilance, deliberate language transmission, restoration of cultural pride through excellence, alignment of recognised institutions, systematic documentation and the promotion of responsible digital conduct, urging every Idoma son and daughter to become a gatekeeper of the people’s image and values.
In a major institutional move, the Och’Idoma announced that activities marking Idoma Day would commence annually from 21 December and culminate on 23 December, with the Och’Idoma Palace designated as the central home of the celebration. He further unveiled plans to upgrade and rebrand the Palace Square to international standards and called on well meaning individuals, corporate bodies and partners to support the project.
Emphasising unity, the monarch warned against rivalry and fragmentation, declaring that the strength of the Idoma Nation lies in one people, one identity and one cultural umbrella guided by mutual respect and shared purpose.
He also announced a series of strategic initiatives, including the establishment of an Annual Idoma Cultural Calendar, standardisation and documentation of heritage, structured youth engagement, deliberate diaspora inclusion, development of cultural tourism and the creative economy, and stronger partnerships with government and institutions.
To guarantee sustainability, the Och’Idoma proclaimed the establishment of an Idoma Cultural Endowment Fund as a permanent financial backbone for cultural development, as well as the institution of a Royal Order of Cultural Merit and Palace Roll of Honour to recognise exceptional service to Idoma identity.
He further directed the development of a Unified Idoma Cultural Brand and Insignia to protect symbols, protocols and presentation from misrepresentation, and adopted cultural competitions in schools as a structured programme to make cultural excellence aspirational.
The monarch also highlighted Idoma cuisine as a tool of cultural diplomacy, identifying Okoho soup as the flagship delicacy, alongside Okpehe seasoning, Okpehe rice and other traditional meals, which he said should be packaged for global recognition.
On unity within the foremost sociocultural structure, he directed that Ochetoha K’Idoma must operate under one harmonised name and identity worldwide, stressing that unity protects diversity rather than erasing it.
As he concluded, the Och’Idoma charged the people to see the celebration as a movement and an enduring institution, expressing hope that Idoma Cultural Day would heal divisions, restore language, protect heritage and announce to Nigeria and the world that the Idoma Nation stands firm.
He offered royal blessings on the renewal process and the Idoma Nation, affirming commitment to cultural continuity, unity and dignity.

A young lady has shared a disturbing account of alleged harassment and brutality by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, claiming the incident occurred on December 24, just a day before Christmas.
According to her account, she was stopped and subjected to an unlawful search by the officers.

During the encounter, she alleged that a firearm was pointed at her, prompting her to flee out of fear for her life.
She further claimed that she was physically assaulted, including being choked, before being apprehended.
The woman also alleged that she was unlawfully detained and placed in a male detention cell alongside men, an action she described as degrading and traumatic.
