EPL: He’s ready-made – Crooks advises Chelsea, others on signing Osimhen
Radio presenter, Alex Crook has advised Premier League clubs including Chelsea on signing Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen.
Crook disclosed that the Nigerian international is perfectly suited for the Premier League, noting that he netted an impressive 37 goals last season.
Despite being linked with top clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United, Osimhen was unable to secure a transfer to any of them last summer.
Ultimately, the 26-year-old made the move to Galatasaray on a permanent deal from Napoli.
“Victor Osimhen scored thirty-seven goals in 41 games last season on loan at Galatasaray. He has eleven goals in 15 games this season,” Crook told talkSPORT.
“He looks ready-made for the Premier League. I am surprised that nobody went for him. He is only 26.”

Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong have been formally conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Following this, Troost-Ekong has been immensely proud and grateful while describing the moment as deeply emotional for himself and his family.
This achievement is a fitting national recognition for a decade of distinguished service to Nigerian football.
The retired defender confirmed the receipt of his official national honours certificate on Tuesday, a day after the conferment ceremony.
“A Very Proud Moment for Me and My Family” – Troost-Ekong
Writing on social media, Troost-Ekong revealed that the certificate had been delivered to him following Monday’s announcement, while thanking the President for the honour.
“I am honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (@officialABAT), for conferring on me the MFR national honour.”
“I have been sent the official certificate today following the announcement last night. It’s a very proud moment for me and my family to receive this recognition.”
The certificate, signed by President Tinubu, formally states:
“In exercise of the powers vested in me under section 1(4) of the National Honours Act, I, BOLA AHMED TINUBU, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in recognition of your outstanding virtues and in appreciation of your services to our country, Nigeria, HEREBY award to you to have, and enjoy title, dignity and all the privileges of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).”

The 32-year-old defender used the occasion to reflect on the profound role Nigeria has played in shaping both his career and personal identity.

“Wearing the green and white has always been a great responsibility, privilege, and a promise to give everything for the badge and for our people,” he said.
Born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong switched international allegiance to Nigeria and went on to become one of the most respected leaders in the national team.
He was admired for his leadership, discipline, resilience, and consistency.
A Fitting Honour After Retirement
The MFR recognition comes just weeks after Troost-Ekong officially stepped away from international football, citing the need to make room for the next generation while pledging lifelong support for the national team.
It also follows the Federal Government’s fulfilment of its promise to reward members of Nigeria’s silver-winning AFCON 2023 squad, with each player and official receiving national honours and housing benefits through the National Sports Commission.
Backing the Super Eagles Ahead of AFCON 2025
After announcing his retirement from international football on 5 December 2025, Troost-Ekong threw his full and unwavering support for the Super Eagles as they embark on their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.
“As our Super Eagles begin their AFCON journey today, I wish the team every success. As promised, I’ll be supporting them all the way. I believe in this group, our nation and what we can achieve,” he added.
He concluded with a powerful declaration of national pride:
“I am, and will always be, proud to be Nigerian.”

A Decorated International Career
Troost-Ekong earned 83 international caps for Nigeria after making his debut on 13 June 2015 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad, where he played the full 90 minutes.

Eddie Howe calls on Newcastle owners to end ‘limbo’ over stadium and training ground projects – as he lays out ‘game-changing’ target for 2026
Eddie Howe has called on Newcastle’s owners to end a sense of ‘limbo’ and show their ambition in 2026 by announcing stadium and training-ground plans.
The head coach admits he is unlikely to be in charge by the time those projects are finally delivered, but believes progress would be a signal of standards being set. It is now well over a year since then-chief executive Darren Eales said that news on those off-field developments was ‘imminent’.
But more than four years on from the Saudi-led takeover, a decision is yet to be made on whether to build a new stadium or redevelop St James’ Park, while the site for a state-of-the-art training complex is awaiting sign-off.
It had appeared to be all systems go for a new 65,000-capacity home on Leazes Park when a video of how it would look was presented to the owners in February. Since then, though, the Saudis have stalled on committing to the project.
Howe understands that the right decision has to be reached, but he is also mindful of the positive messaging and the boost such plans would provide for the club, whose training ground has been improved but remains among the least advanced in the Premier League.
Asked for ways to take the club forward in 2026, Howe said: ‘Fundamentally, looking at the club with a broader view, you look at the training ground and stadium – that part of the club is in limbo at the moment.

No final decision has yet been made, but the principal idea has been to build a new stadium on Leazes Park of around 65,000 seats
‘In terms of which direction the club is going to take, that would be a big step forward to get clarity and to take everything into the future in a really positive way. It would have a game-changing effect on everything.
‘I am also talking about the academy in that, the brilliant work that goes on down there and if we can move everything forward in terms of facilities. Not that I believe facilities are the be all and end all, but they are a great way of setting standards higher and showing your ambition in a clear and strong way. That would be a game-changer when that happens. The ambition is there from everyone to make that happen.’
Howe added: ’But it has to be right. If there is extra time taken to make the right decisions, so the stadium project is correct and it’s the right one for Newcastle for how ever many years, then take the extra time.
‘It’s the same with the training ground. You need the right site and designs. I would rather it was correct than rushed. I know there’s a 99.9 per cent chance that I’m not going to see either in my position, but I’m still passionate about making sure it’s there for the future generations of Newcastle, whether that’s supporters or players. The board recognise how important that is too.
‘So I think the ambition and drive is there to do it and work is going on behind the scenes. There just needs to be a bit of patience to make sure it’s the right solution for everybody.’

FIFA U-17 World Cup winner, Christian Ebere Osinachi, has thrown his weight behind the Super Eagles’ quest to win their long-awaited fourth Africa Cup of Nations title at the on-going continental showpiece in Morocco.
Nigeria have been crowned champions thrice in 1980, 1994 and 2013 and the Super Eagles are seeking to end a 12-year title drought after finishing as runners-up in the last edition in Cote d’Ivoire. But Osinachi who stars for Uruguayan side, Club Nacional de Football, said Super Eagles will need to overcome their recent setback in the CAF Play-Offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup where they lost the only available ticket to the Inter-Continental Play-Offs to the Congo Democratic Republic last November.
“Yeah , it’s true that the Nigeria recently lost to the Congo DR in the FIFA World Cup qualification play-off but I think the Super Eagles have another opportunity to make Nigerians happy and proud again by winning the AFCON,” Osinachi who has excelled across clubs in South America, told Nation’s Sports. “I think Nigeria can make it because we have the players.
“Nigeria have the players to compete and make it to the finals; and also to win it because last time, the Super Eagles got to the final and unfortunately lost to Cote d’Ivoire .
“But now, I think Nigeria can do it, Yes, I think Nigeria can do it,” he affirmed.
Tomorrow, the Super Eagles will play their decisive second match at the on-going Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON, Morocco 2025, against Tunisia’s Eagles of Carthage in Fez with some of Osinachi’s former teammates at the U-17 level including the striking duo of Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze expected to be in the thick of action. Osinachi said not being part of the team is not an indication that players like him who feature for clubs in South America are not good enough to wear the national team colours at the senior level.
“ I’m really very happy that I have now some of my ex-teammates from the U-17 level and I’m talking about Osimhen and Chukwueze ,” he continued. “ But I’m not disappointed that I have not been able to play for the Super Eagles.
“I last represented Nigeria at the U-17 and since then, they have not called me for the Super Eagles. I also have the hunger to play for the Super Eagles.
“Often, my teammates always ask ‘why is it that they don’t call you for the Super Eagles?’ They feel that I need to be in the Super Eagles because they usually watch Nigeria matches even as recent as when we lost to Congo DR in the Play-offs.
“ So, I’m equally waiting for the opportunity and if I get the chance today, I will be ready to give my best.”
Having featured across clubs in Argentina, Brazil and now in Uruguay, Osinachi would be the first to admit that playing in the South American leagues is not a child’s play, adding it’s about time that national team’s handlers bore that searchlight on that side of the globe too.
“ Playing in South America is not an easy task,” Osinachi who has been listed for as many as 10 South American clubs across Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, revealed. “ South American league is not a league that you’ll be given so much space to just do anything you want ; it’s hard and tough. No room for excessive dribbles rather you have to very think fast on the ball.
“Here it’s more intensive and I think they )Super Eagles’ technical crew), need to watch some players some of those players in South America because they are as good as players in Europe.
“ I think the national team’s handlers don’t look at players in the south American leagues but not knowing that players from the South American leagues play more intensive football than most other people playing in Europe.”
“ In fact, I can tell you for free that players in South America play more intensive football than players in Europe because our football here is hard. It’s not an easy football.
“So, they need to watch more of South American football too. I know it is very far is very far from Nigeria and maybe that’s why they don’t watch or see players from here in South America whereas Europe is close to Nigeria.
“I want to believe they don’t watch the South American league s as well as the Libertadores, the Champions League of South America. They don’t watch all those competitions.
“ My teammates at Nacional know how good and strong; that I’m a fighter on the ball; I have the speed and I think I can also make the difference with the Super Eagles.
“ They shouldn’t look down on players in the South American leagues because players in that region has a lot on intensity than even players in Europe,” added Osinachi as he speaks on other sundry issues. Excerpts…
On winning the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup
Yes, you are right, it’s 10 years this year since won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile and it’s always a great memory to recall. I was so happy to be part of the team and happy to have won the World Cup at the first opportunity at that level. The memory of representing my country was great and playing alongside some of my teammates especially Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze , Kelechi Nwakali, Kingsley Michael , Orji Okoronkwo, Ndidi Anumudu and the rest, it was just simply great . Of course, it was equally great playing under Coach Emmanuel Amuneke as well as the other members of the coaching crew and backroom staff. Although so many things happened along the way but i really thank God how everything went ….because we won the World Cup. I was very, very happy.
On not going to Europe after World Cup conquest in Chile
After the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, I actually had a club to sign for in Belgium but what happened was that my ex-manager had an issue with the team’s director, something like that. So they had an issue and I was really angry because that was a good opportunity for me to start. Because some of my teammates were also going to Europe and that was a good opportunity for me to start in Europe too. But because of the issue that they had, I lost that opportunity. My ex-manager told me that I should go to Nigeria and stay and that he was going to get a new club for me. But ‘I said no’ because I needed to play football and I don’t want to stay back in Nigeria and start waiting for some contracts. That was how I moved to go to South America, being Rosario Central in Argentina. I started my career there, playing in the youth team. So from there I went to Brazil and here I’m today in Uruguay.
On being called different names in Argentina
When i arrived in Argentina, some called me Lukaku while some also called me Mbappé because I have the force and i have the speed ; so it is because of these two abilities that my teammates call me so many names. I have no problem with that if they are calling me the names because of my playing abilities and not because they wanted to make jokes out of me. So, it feels good because they are calling me those names because I’m strong, I’m fast with the ball.
On playing across clubs in South America
I have had outstanding experiences playing across clubs in South America. In Brazil, they play more with tactics and techniques while in both Argentina and Uruguay, they play with both techniques and force (power). But I must confess that I’m really enjoying playing in Nacional just as I enjoyed playing at Clube Plaza Colonia in Argentina. Frankly, I have enjoyed playing in virtually all the clubs in these three countries because I’m that guy that always make my fellow teammates happy. I’m always happy with my teammates. I always cheer them up and all that, yeah.
On the ‘One-derful’ cup-winning goal for Nacional
I scored the goal that gave the Nacional the league title and I felt so happy. I feel great because the league title meant a lot for us, not only me but my teammates. Because the name on the League Cup is dedicated to one of our former teammates who lost his life while playing for Nacional. Interestingly , he had also previously played for our opponents in that final (Atlético Peñarol) but we wanted to win the cup for him. So , we did it for him. But personally, I feel great scoring the winning goal that gave Nacional the victory. I feel so happy, excited because that was a wonderful goal which makes me feel great representing the club. Nacional is a good club and they are one of the big clubs in South America. The fans they love me and I also love them too because they always cheer me up and all that. So it was great for me. It was something great, something that I will not forget. And even the club also will not forget.
On close affinity with his mother.
Yes, it’s true that I’m very close to my mum because I’m the last born and I was also with my mum while I was growing up with my siblings. Even while others will go out, I was always staying with my mum and that was how I was able to know how to do many house chores. She’s my prayer warrior ; she had done a lot to support my football career though initially she didn’t want me to play football. She wanted me to study and never wanted me to play football because of the experience of my dad . My dad actually played football but never made it professionally. So, my mum was scared that I might also waste my time going on that route with football. But along the line, I asked one of my uncles to speak with my mum that after football I’ll still study and that I’ll make her proud. That was how my mum accepted and started supporting me…by giving me money to buy boots and she was always there checking on me especially when I travel outside the state for tournaments . She played a very great role in my career and what I’ve become today.
On marriage
Of course, I will get married but not yet because I have not seen the ‘special one’. But some day, I will get married and I think very soon, I will be there (laughter).

England implode on chaotic first day that sees 20 wickets fall – as visitors trail by 46 runs after Boxing Day Test amid criticism of ‘shocker’ MCG pitch, writes LAWRENCE BOOTH
Twenty wickets fell on a helter-skelter first day’s play in the fourth Ashes Test, as England staggered their way to 110 in response to Australia’s 152, and pundits criticised the quality of the MCG pitch.
With only three Australians and two Englishmen reaching 20, it was the most wickets on the opening day of an Ashes Test since 1904. Facing one over before stumps, the Australians sent out nightwatchman Scott Boland. When he edged the evening’s final ball for four, the ground erupted.
But former England captain Michael Vaughan, commentating for the BBC, called the surface ‘a shocker for a Test match on the first day’. He added: ‘It has just done far too much.’ Stuart Broad, meanwhile, told Australia’s SEN radio: ‘The pitch is doing too much if I’m brutally honest. Test match bowlers don’t need this amount of movement to look threatening.’
As Australia’s bowlers mounted their late-afternoon fightback, few in a ground-record crowd of 94,000 seemed too fussed. The locals had turned out in force for the biggest day of the country’s sporting calendar hoping to see their team take another step towards a third 5–0 whitewash in six home Ashes series, and the rest was details.
England’s reply got off to a dreadful start. Ben Duckett’s head may still have been spinning after his late-night Noosa video went viral, so it was no surprise when he chipped Mitchell Starc to mid-on for two, taking his series haul to 99 runs at 14.
Three fatal defensive prods followed, as Jacob Bethell (out for two on his Ashes debut), Zak Crawley (five) and Joe Root (a 15-ball duck) all perished. At 16 for four, England were heading for a car crash.

Harry Brook attacked from the start, presumably reasoning that a ball with his name on it was not far away, and launching Starc over extra cover for six, then pulling Neser for six more.
His stand with Ben Stokes was worth 50 when Brook was pinned lbw by Scott Boland for a 34-ball 41, at which point the innings went back into freefall. Boland bowled Jamie Smith through the gate for two, then found Will Jacks’s inside edge: 77 for seven.
Michael Neser had Stokes flashing to slip for 16, and Brydon Carse top-edging to fine leg for four, leaving Gus Atkinson to take England into three figures with a plucky 28. England had been bowled out in 29.5 overs, the equivalent of a session.
It all meant that England’s good work with the ball in the first half of the day was almost forgotten, with Australia bowled out for 152 inside 46 overs.
The star was Josh Tongue, who was rewarded for a full, attacking length with a Test-best five for 45, including the wicket of Steve Smith, bowled through the gate for nine shortly before lunch.
Earlier, Tongue had removed Jake Weatherald, caught down the leg side for 10, and Marnus Labuschagne, driving extravagantly to slip for three, as England clawed back a loose start with the new ball from Carse.
Later, Tongue ended Australia’s first innings with the wickets of Neser and Boland in two balls, to finish with England’s first MCG five-for since 1998-99, when Darren Gough and Dean Headley both achieved the feat.

It was a mixed bag from his team-mates. Atkinson bowled with superb control on his comeback after being left out at Adelaide, removing Travis Head, who chopped on for 12, and having Usman Khawaja caught behind for 29.
Stokes chipped in with the big wicket of Alex Carey, caught at leg slip by Brook for 20, but Carse was loose again, straying in line and length as Australia’s openers put on a precious 27, and finishing only with the wicket of Starc.
Carse did effect England’s first Ashes run-out in 11 Tests, throwing down the stumps off his own bowling to remove Cameron Green for 17 and end a seventh-wicket stand of 52 with Neser. But his latest display of profligacy was the last thing England needed on one of the most bowler-friendly surfaces seen on the opening day of an Ashes Test.
Mali’s Boubou Traore will be at the centre when the Super Eagles take on Tunisia in a Group C fixture at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, DAILY POST reports.
The highly anticipated encounter is slated for the Complexe Sportif de Fès.
Boubou, 34, is one of the highly experienced arbiters in Africa.
CAF also confirmed the appointment of Senegal’s Issa Sy as Video Assistant Referee, VAR, for the game.
Nigeria and Tunisia will be targeting a win in the encounter to secure their passage into the Round of 16.
The two former champions won their first games against Tanzania and Uganda respectively.
The game will kick-off at 9pm Nigerian time.
Former Nigeria international Godfrey Oboabona has advised the Super Eagles to work as a team if they are to overcome Tunisia in Saturday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
A victory for Nigeria or Tunisia will guarantee qualification to the knockout stages of the tournament after the Super Eagles defeated Tanzania 2-1 in their opening game while Tunisia edged Uganda 3-1.
Speaking with Footy Africa, Oboabona stated that individual stars don’t win a game without team efforts. He recommended that the Super Eagles unite to defeat the Carthage Eagles.

Australia’s most vocal home supporter bays have been infiltrated by England’s Barmy Army, and local cricket fans furious.
A record crowd of 93,442 crammed into the MCG for the first day of the annual Boxing Day Test, a huge achievement considering Australia has already wrapped the Ashes series up 3-0.
The travelling English contingent arrived early in Melbourne, determined to cheer their side to a consolation victory.
And they got under the skin of Aussie cricket fans early, by filing up Bay 13 with England supporters and their flags.
Bay 13 at the MCG is significant in cricket because it has long been the ground’s most famous – and infamous – supporter section, particularly during Ashes and Boxing Day Test matches.
Traditionally located in the Great Southern Stand, Bay 13 became known from the 1970s and 1980s onward as the home of the loudest, most partisan Australian fans, many of whom attended every day of the Test.

Another added: ”Australians getting jousted from Bay 13 is beyond disgraceful.
‘Allocating Bay 13 to the Barmy Army is the reason the Aussies can’t bat today,’ another said with seveal laughing emojis.
Bay 13 at the MCG has been at the centre of several controversial moments that shaped its reputation in Australian cricket folklore.
Merv Hughes’ famous Bay 13 moment came when fans repeatedly yelled ‘stretch it, Merv’ as he warmed up near the boundary at the MCG.
Hughes leaned into the heckling, exaggerating his stretches directly in front of the crowd and turning the exchange into a running joke.
The moment became part of Boxing Day Test folklore, symbolising the close relationship between Australian players and Bay 13.

One of the most serious incidents occurred during the 2018 Boxing Day Test, when racially charged chants aimed at Indian supporters led to multiple evictions and widespread backlash.
That episode marked a turning point, forcing cricket authorities to confront where crowd ‘tradition’ crossed into unacceptable conduct.
Bay 13 was also infamous for coordinated booing of opposition players, especially during tense Ashes moments, which divided opinion between fans who saw it as theatre and those who viewed it as poor sportsmanship.

Tickets for Nigeria’s Super Eagles Africa Cup of Nations Group C clash with Tunisia at the Fez Stadium on Saturday have been sold out.
According to ticket information on the CAF’s official platform, all three categories for the match were fully booked.
Category 1 is priced at 300 Moroccan dirhams (N47,734), Category 2 at 200 (N31,822) and Category 3 at 100 (N15,911) with current exchange rate.
The Super Eagles will take on the Carthage Eagles in what promises to be a thrilling and tough contest.
Both African heavyweights opened their campaigns at this year’s AFCON with victories.

‘Just the fact that when I know it’s over, it’s over,’ he added when Gonzalez questioned what he would be returning for.
‘I still have a lot of love for this game. If I came back it would be just to answer that flame in my heart for this thing.’
Kelce continued: ‘If it was just Sundays, I think I could play until I’m 50 but obviously there is so much that goes into it.’
Led by third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun, Kelce and co will still look to deliver a gift to the fans spending their Christmas at Arrowhead, including his megastar fiancee Taylor Swift.

Head coach Andy Reid admitted that he was unsure whether it would be Kelce’s final game at Arrowhead but still took time to heap praise on the ‘phenomenal’ tight end.
Speaking to reporters, Reid said: ‘I don’t know if it is or not. I haven’t talked to him, but his numbers and personality speak for themselves. Phenomenal person.
Meanwhile, a despondent Chris Jones, the Chiefs defensive tackle, said: ‘Ah, man, it’s sad… I hope it isn’t his last ride, but if it is, I tip my hat off to him. Hell of a career.’
Kelce’s coaches and teammates joined Coach Reid in paying emotional tributes to the Chiefs tight end earlier this week.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy echoed those sentiments when speaking to the media, reflecting on Kelce’s arrival in Kansas City over a decade ago.
‘Well, I go back to 2013 when he first got here and I just think back,’ Nagy said. ‘What Travis has done to his organization, his teammates, coaches, to this city – it’s special’.

Last week, he said: ‘I think I would rather just keep the focus of the media and everything on this team right now and all the conversations I have with the team and everything moving forward will be with them.
‘I think it’s a unique time in my life and unfortunately I got three games left and I know when the season ends this year, typically we go into it and we don’t know when it’s gonna end and that’s the beauty of it.’

Kelce added that he’s: ‘Just trying to make sure that everyone here knows I’m focused on trying to win football games these last three games.’
Though the Christmas fixture against the Broncos could be his final at Arrowhead, he will still be set for a final outing against the Raiders, in Las Vegas, on January 4.
Across 15 games this season, Kelce has hauled in 803 yards and five touchdowns.
Kelce will be looking to surpass his career-low mark of 823 yards from last season but may struggle given the current quarterback injury crisis the Chiefs are enduring.
While he should pass those 823 yards, Kelce could finish with fewer than 90 catches on the season for the first time since 2017 – his fifth season in the league.
As it stands, the tight end has 68 receptions. He would need to average 7.6 catches per game in his final two contests to pass 90 catches on the year.
However, he’s only hauled in at least seven receptions in three games this season.
If January 4 does prove to be his final rodeo, Kelce will hang up his cleats and turn his attention to planning his blockbuster nuptials to Swift with the wedding expected to take place next summer.

“The organisation has been excellent,” Hassan told CAFOnline in an exclusive interview.
“Our Moroccan brothers have done a fantastic job. From a technical perspective, the level of play is increasing with every match, and you can see teams growing stronger on the pitch. Overall, everything has been going very well.”
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in African football history, Hassan was a central figure in Egypt’s unprecedented AFCON hat-trick in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
Reflecting on that golden era, the African football icon highlighted the importance of unity, mentality and pride in the national jersey — qualities he believes remain essential for success today.
“We had an immense passion for the Egyptian jersey and a deep understanding of what it meant to represent the national team. That made a huge difference.
