A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has escalated a public dispute with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over federal intervention funds approved after the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan, alleging that the fund was largely diverted to other purposes.

On Friday, Mr Fayose appeared on TVC’s political programme, Journalists’ Hangout, where he accused Governor Makinde of failing to disclose the N50 billion support he received from President Bola Tinubu’s administration following the Ibadan explosion.

He said Governor Makinde only mentioned the part where he declined the president’s request to help organise the APC in Oyo State but did not tell Nigerians about the help and support the president gave to him and to the people of his state.

“But you did not tell Nigerians you got, at the prerogative, at the mercy of Mr President, you got 50 billion Naira in support of the explosion in Ibadan. He never said that to Nigeria. So, the president can say the explosion is not worth more than 10 billion,” Mr Fayose said.

Recall that Mr Makinde had granted an interview where he revealed that Nyesom Wike offered to “hold” down the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to strengthen President Bola Tinubu’s second term ambition.

Governor Makinde also said the president personally asked him to help organise the APC party in the state but he refused.

Responding to Mr Fayose, the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Makinde, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, challenged the former Ekiti State governor to prove his allegations.

“He who makes an allegation must provide evidence. Let him produce proof of what he is claiming. It is important to note that Fayose lacks credibility. Even members of his family have publicly disowned him.

“What credibility does such a person have? People like that speak carelessly, and ordinarily, they should not be taken seriously. But since he has made a claim, let him substantiate it,” he said.

Acclaimed ‘evidence’

In a statement signed by Mr Fayose and posted on the X page of Lere Olayinka, a media aide to Nyesom Wike, the former governor said he decided to make the documents public in the interest of transparency, arguing that the disclosure was necessary after the Oyo governor spoke about private discussions with President Bola Tinubu on the matter.

“Two days ago, I said on national television that Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde got a sum of N50bn from the Federal Government as intervention on the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan.

“Yesterday, the governor responded by asking me to provide evidence that he received such money, and here is the evidence he asked for.

“Meanwhile, only N4.5bn was released to victims of the Ibadan Explosion. Rather, he diverted this fund and many others to his Presidential ambition, which is the reason for the crisis in the PDP and his attacks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his government,” Mr Fayose said.

Mr Fayose further alleged that the unaccounted funds were channelled into political activities, including Governor Makinde’s reported presidential ambition.

He accused the Oyo governor of being less than forthright with residents of the state about the scale of federal support received after the explosion.

He also claimed that Oyo State had benefited from other intervention funds from the Tinubu administration which, he said, were not disclosed to the public. In addition, Mr Fayose alleged discrepancies between the state’s actual internally generated revenue and figures publicly presented by the Makinde administration, saying he possessed documents to substantiate the claim.

“ I challenge Governor Seyi Makinde to sue me on this. Let me also tell him that there are proofs of other intervention funds received from Tinubu’s administration by the Oyo State Government, which the governor refused to disclose to the people.

“Also, there are documentary evidences on the actual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Oyo State, as against Governor Makinde’s claim, but we will keep our gunpowder dry for now,” he said.

As of press time, the Oyo State Government had not issued a fresh response to Mr Fayose’s latest claims

The document

A close look at the “evidence” indicates that the document is a memo from the office of the Accountant General of the Federation to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy addressing a request from the Oyo State government, rather than a payment receipt.

The document dated 29 August 2024, is titled “Requests for Special Intervention Funds”.

It outlined requests from several state governments seeking special intervention funding amounting to N915.5 billion. It explained that the requests could not be fully met due to the low cash balance in the special accounts designated for such interventions, even though some of the requests were submitted earlier in the year.

The letter states that N450.7 billion had already been disbursed, leaving an outstanding balance of N464.7 billion. An attached schedule lists the beneficiary states, the purpose of each request, and the amounts sought.

One entry shows Oyo State’s request for N50 billion for reconstruction works following the Bodija explosion.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration over the recent United States airstrikes on suspected terrorist locations in Sokoto State, describing the development as a sign of failure in handling Nigeria’s security challenges.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said while it recognises the serious security threats facing the country, the involvement of foreign troops on Nigerian soil raises serious concerns about sovereignty and governance.

The ADC said protecting lives and defeating terrorism should remain a top national priority, adding that it supports all lawful and effective measures aimed at restoring security.

However, the party stressed that Nigeria must not allow desperation to weaken its independence.

“We have always opposed the physical presence and operations of foreign military forces on Nigerian soil,” the statement said.

“Our current security challenges should not be used as an excuse to compromise the sovereignty of the country.”

Reacting to the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) airstrikes carried out on December 25, 2025, the ADC said it could only accept the action as a desperate and temporary step, warning that it must not replace Nigeria-led solutions to domestic security problems.

The opposition party went further to accuse the Tinubu administration of incompetence, arguing that the foreign strike reflects a failure of leadership.

According to the ADC, this is what happens when a government treats national security and diplomacy as secondary issues, while focusing mainly on revenue generation.

The party also faulted the way Nigerians were informed about the airstrikes.

It described the communication as troubling, noting that such a sensitive and historic issue was first announced through a social media post by the American President.

“When it suits political messaging, the President addresses Nigerians directly,” Abdullahi said.

“But on an issue as serious as a foreign military strike on Nigerian soil, Nigerians heard it first from the U.S., while the only response from Nigeria came through a spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

The ADC said this approach shows a worrying lack of understanding of the gravity of the situation and called on the federal government to be transparent.

It urged authorities to clearly inform Nigerians how many terrorists were actually killed in the strike and to take full responsibility for securing the country.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, has warned that domestic economy airfares could climb above N1 million from next year.

He made this known during an interview on The Morning Show on Arise News on Sunday, linking the possible hike to the upcoming implementation of the new tax reform laws set to take effect from January 2026.

According to him, the laws remove several tax exemptions previously granted to airlines under the 2020 Finance Act, which had helped reduce operating costs.

Onyema said the removal of these incentives would sharply increase the cost of operations, forcing airlines to pass the burden onto passengers.

What Allen Onyema is saying 

Onyema explained that the new tax reform reintroduces Value Added Tax (VAT) on aircraft, spare parts, and air tickets, which were previously exempted under the 2020 Finance Act.

He noted that, for instance, airlines importing aircraft valued at around $80 million would pay 7.5% VAT, adding billions of naira to costs.

He added that Nigerian airlines already operate in a high-cost environment, with borrowing rates of up to 35%, making it impossible to absorb the added expenses. Onyema also cited the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) annex, which states that VAT should not be charged on air transportation services.

He warned that if the law is implemented in 2026, economy-class fares could rise significantly.

“By the time you bring these things in, at the end of the day, the cost of operation will be huge… your ticket fares will hit N1. something million soon,” Onyema said.  

He further stressed: “If we implement that tax reform, Nigerian airlines could go down within three months.”

He clarified that the increase reflects operational costs, not profiteering, and argued that aviation should be supported to ensure connectivity and economic growth.

Operational hurdles and financial pressures  

Beyond the upcoming tax reforms, Onyema highlighted persistent challenges facing Nigerian airlines, including high fuel costs, foreign exchange constraints, and multiple statutory charges.

He explained that for a domestic ticket costing around N350,000, only about N81,000 actually goes to the airline, with the rest consumed by taxes, levies, and other charges.

Onyema pushed back against claims that airlines overcharge passengers, stressing that Nigerian domestic fares remain among the cheapest globally when converted to dollars. He also noted that several domestic routes—particularly to the Southeast—are barely profitable, as aircraft often return with few passengers.

He addressed criticism over flight delays and cancellations, pointing out that many disruptions are caused by factors outside airlines’ control, such as bird strikes, limited airport infrastructure, and errors by ground handling companies.

Onyema warned that without supportive policies and reforms, the sustainability of Nigeria’s aviation sector could be at serious risk in the coming years.

What you should know  

For years, Nigerian airlines have complained about the heavy burden of taxes, levies, and charges that eat into their revenue. Earlier in December 2025, an additional $11.5 security levy under the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) took effect, raising the total charge on international tickets to $31.50.

From 2026, the aviation sector and passengers will be watching closely to see how ECOWAS’ reforms fit into Nigeria’s system and whether they ease airlines’ high operational costs.

The immediate-past governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has condemned in the strongest terms the violent attack and abduction of his cousin and journalist, Dr. Pedro Obaseki.

In a statement, Obaseki said, “I strongly condemn the violent attack, maiming and abduction of my cousin, Dr. Pedro Obaseki, by thugs who are said to be acting under instructions of the palace of the Oba of Benin.”

Dr Obaseki, a former Managing Director of DAAR Communications PLC and a renowned journalist, was attacked at Uwa Primary School, where he was subjected to physical assault, intimidation, and torture by the thugs before being forcefully taken to the palace.

A viral video circulating on social media shows the thugs taking the brutalised Dr Pedro, who was already stripped of his clothing to the palace, where they were ceremoniously received by some palace chiefs.

Reacting to the development, former Governor Obaseki described the incident as a grave violation of fundamental human rights and a reckless disregard for the rule of law.

While expressing disappointment, he said: “This is not only embarrassing but deeply troubling. I call on security agencies to immediately investigate this matter thoroughly and transparently, identify those responsible for this barbaric act and ensure they are held accountable in accordance with the law.

“A situation where thugs and non-state actors appear to freely take the law into their own hands on behalf of high-profile individuals and those in positions of authority can only result in one outcome, a degeneration into a state of anarchy, which will do no one no good.”

He further charged, “I urge human rights organizations, civil society groups, and all well-meaning Nigerians to lend their voices and speak out firmly against this injustice and gross violation of human rights.”

Zaynab was formerly married to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in a highly publicised traditional wedding held in Benin City on March 12, 2016, with a reception in Ile-Ife the following day.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has said the actions and deeds of Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, suggest he is above the law.

Naija News reports that Gumi has been very vocal since the multiple airstrikes carried out by the United States in Sokoto State.

The airstrikes, which were conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian government, were targeted at ISIS and Lakurawa terrorists.

Amid the controversies surrounding the attack, Gumi has continued to rubbish the multiple airstrikes in several commentaries.

Igbokwe, in a post via his Facebook page on Sunday, said Gumi is speaking in favour of bandits as if he were their commander.

He wrote, “Is Sheikh Gumi above the law? I have heard him speaking in favour of the bandits. I have seen him having a meeting with well armed bandits.

“He speaks as if he is their commander. His actions and deeds suggest that he is above the law.”

Meanwhile, Nigerian lawyer cum human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has slammed Gumi over his criticisms of the United States’ airstrikes against terrorists in Sokoto State.

In a post via 𝕏 on Sunday, Adeyanju said Gumi should not be ‘crying’ if Trump’s airstrikes failed to kill any ISIS terrorists in Sokoto State.

He said, “If the Donald Trump air strike against Nigerian ISIS didn’t kill any terrorist, why is Gumi crying? Should he not be happy that all his colleagues are still alive?

“Why the tears? We need more collaborative efforts between the US and Nigeria against these barbaric terrorists terrorizing our nation.”

The Jigawa State Government has released N167,251,255 to sponsor six medical students to study in India, even as it earmarked N10 billion for the State Scholarship Board’s 2026 foreign study programs.

The announcement was made at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on Sunday, as the students departed for Integral University, Lucknow, for their medical studies. Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Scholarship Board, Said Magaji, said the funding covers tuition fees, accommodation, living allowance, resident primary health insurance, air tickets, and other necessary allowances.

Magaji stated that the scholarship reflects the commitment of Governor Muhammed Badaru Abubakar to human development and the prioritization of education in the state. “When you look at the infrastructure development in Jigawa State, especially in health, more hospitals are being built, rehabilitated, and reconstructed,” he said.

The six students were selected based on their exceptional performance in the 38th and 39th National Quranic Recitation Competitions held in Kibbe State. The government is sponsoring them to pursue Doctor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Nursing, and Engineering courses at Integral University.

Magaji added that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision for human development, ensuring that students trained abroad return to contribute to local hospitals and other infrastructure projects.

He also highlighted the case of Adam Isa Adam, an engineering graduate from ABU Zaria, who represented Nigeria in a global AI competition in China. Adam will pursue a Master’s degree at Integral University, India, supported by the state government, to further enhance his skills for national development.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Adam Isa Adam said, “I am traveling to India for my MTech at Integral University, Lucknow, because of my achievements in the global competition in China. This scholarship from Jigawa State Government will help me expand my potential for the betterment of Jigawa.”

The spokesperson for Osun State Governor, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being unsettled by the growing popularity of the Accord Party ahead of the 2026 governorship election in the state.

Rasheed made the remarks while reacting to calls attributed to federal lawmaker Wole Oke, who reportedly urged the deregistration of the Accord Party.

He described the call as unconstitutional, illegal, and a sign of desperation by the opposition.

According to Rasheed, Accord has emerged as a strong and viable political platform for Governor Ademola Adeleke, a development that he said has caused panic within the APC. He accused Oke of engaging in “undemocratic advocacy” to satisfy political interests within the ruling party.

“The fixation of the APC on deleting Accord from the electoral process instead of facing the electorate raises serious questions about its confidence,” Rasheed said.

“If the APC is certain of its popularity, it should submit itself to the will of the voters.”

Rasheed further alleged that the APC has engaged in plots aimed at undermining democratic governance in Osun State, including attempts to financially pressure the state by withholding local government allocations.

He warned that such actions were inconsistent with democratic principles and could destabilize the state’s political environment.

The governor’s spokesperson emphasized that Governor Adeleke would approach the 2026 election on the strength of his administration’s record since taking office in 2022, which has received positive reviews from both local and international observers.

He highlighted key achievements of the Adeleke administration, including significant progress in primary healthcare, education, infrastructure, agriculture, and pension administration.

Rasheed noted that Osun moved from 33rd to 7th position in national NECO and WAEC rankings, constructed over 250 kilometres of roads, and cleared more than ₦100 billion in pension and half-salary arrears.

The spokesperson also cited support for farmers with tractors and farm inputs, strengthened cooperatives and artisans through funding, upgraded sports facilities including Osogbo City Stadium, and improved the ease of doing business to attract private sector investments.

Rasheed challenged the APC governorship candidate, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, to campaign based on his party’s record between 2018 and 2022, while stressing that Governor Adeleke would present his own record from 2022 to date. “The people of Osun have experienced both good governance and maladministration. They know the difference,” he said.

He called on the APC to embrace issue-based campaigns and democratic competition, urging the party to seek power through the ballot rather than shortcuts.

Rasheed expressed confidence that the electorate would deliver its verdict during the governorship election scheduled for August 8, 2026.

The ‎Edo State Police Command has arrested one Amadin William for allegedly killing his Europe-based childhood friend identified as Eghosa Osarietinomwan.

DAILY POST reports that the Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this to newsmen on Sunday in Benin-City.

Ikoedem also confirmed that two other persons were arrested following a reprisal attack by angry youths that greeted the killing.

The angry youths in the community were reported to have set the suspect’s house ablaze.

The police spokesperson said the murder suspect has been taken into custody.

“The deceased sustained deep machete cuts on the neck after stepping out to ease himself during the house-warming celebration.

‎“He was rushed to the hospital for treatment, where he was confirmed dead.
‎
“The suspect, after committing the crime, absconded and went into hiding but was tracked and arrested on December 27.
‎
“Meanwhile, two other persons have been arrested in connection with the arson that followed the incident,” she said.

DAILY POST learnt that the killing of Eghosa Osarietinomwan, a Europe-based man took place in Oben community, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.

The suspect was said to be the deceased’s childhood friend.

The suspect was said to have lured the victim to a bush path during his house-warming ceremony on December 22, 2025, where he allegedly attacked him with a machete.

The suspect was said to have  fled the community shortly after the incident but was later apprehended in Benin City.

‎It was further learnt that the deceased had returned from Europe to celebrate the Yuletide with his family before the tragic incident occurred.

Following the attack, angry youths in the community reportedly set the suspect’s house ablaze.

Seeing what the US military did to ISIS in Sokoto, he said that he is heading to the north to support and protect communities against attacks, as well as to support the soldiers there, adding that there is no room for terrorism or hiding places for terrorists.

His statement read:

“Good morning fam, inspired by President Trump’s airstrikes smashing ISIS camps in the Northwest, I’m fired up to do my part for Nigeria and heading North today to support our communities, stand with victims, and back our brave armed forces all the way. No more hiding for terrorists, peace must return to this great nation named Nigeria.”

A Nigerian soldier has shared the touching reason behind his unusual daily routine at a POS withdrawal stand.

In a video that has gone viral on TikTok, the soldier, identified by the username @Oliver, revealed that he withdraws ₦7,100 every day a habit that eventually caught the attention of a security guard.

According to the soldier, the guard once asked him why he made daily withdrawals instead of withdrawing enough money to last several days.

A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, group in Oyo State, Oyo PDP-Visionaries, has criticised former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, over his claim that Governor Seyi Makinde received N50 billion from the Federal Government as relief funds for victims of the January 2024 Bodija explosion.

The group described the allegation as false and misleading.

DAILY POST reports that Fayose had accused Makinde of diverting part of the N50 billion allegedly received from the President.

The group dismissed Fayose’s claims in a statement signed by its coordinator, Qudus Olayide, and released to journalists in Ibadan on Sunday.

Olayide faulted Fayose for trying to justify the claim by presenting a letter from the Ministry of Finance, which the group said merely contained requests from states and did not indicate any approval or disbursement of funds.

According to the group, it was regrettable that Fayose would attempt to misinform the public in a bid to discredit Makinde, adding that it was even more troubling that he allegedly presented a request letter as proof of approval.

The group challenged Fayose to produce a document showing actual approval or release of the N50 billion, insisting that Nigerians are capable of distinguishing between a request and an approved allocation.

In a strongly worded response, the group stated that “half-education is more dangerous than evil,” arguing that Fayose’s actions reflected a misunderstanding of basic governance procedures.

It further accused the former governor of being driven by personal motives in his attacks on Makinde, describing his conduct as unserious and likening him to a “court jester”.

The group urged Fayose to refrain from actions that could further embarrass him and Ekiti State, noting that as a former two-term governor, he should know better.

Oyo PDP-Visionaries also praised Makinde for what it described as transparent and people-focused leadership, warning Fayose against distracting the Oyo State governor with what it termed “opportunistic and low-level politics”.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Lagos on Sunday, December 28, 2025, for Europe to continue his end-of-year holiday.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu had earlier arrived in Lagos on December 20 to spend the Christmas holidays after official visits to Borno and Bauchi States.

What the statement is saying 

According to Onanuga, the President will also make an official trip to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), during the break.

“His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed AlNahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, has invited President Tinubu to participate in the 2026 edition of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2026) Summit, which will take place in the emirate early in January,” Onanuga said. 

The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week is a weeklong annual event that brings together leaders from government, business, and civil society to chart the next era of sustainable development.

The 2026 edition, themed “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go”, will focus on connecting ambition with action across innovation, finance, and people, showcasing pathways for global progress with confidence.

Onanuga confirmed that President Tinubu will return to Nigeria after participating in the summit.

Commitment to Nigeria’s stability 

In his Christmas message to Nigerians on Wednesday, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s security, unity and stability, assuring citizens that the government remains steadfast in upholding religious freedom and peaceful coexistence across the country.

The President said his pledge to protect lives, and property remains firm under God and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Since I assumed office in 2023, I have continually reassured Nigerians of our unyielding commitment to safeguarding the security, unity, and stability of our nation. That commitment remains steadfast under God and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Tinubu said.

Last month, Tinubu postponed his scheduled trips to the 20th G20 Summit and the 7th AU–EU Summit, holding in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, citing “security breaches” in Kebbi and Kwara States.

In his stead, Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg.
