Presidential hopeful, Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has described the recent United States airstrikes targeting Islamic State (IS) elements operating within Nigeria as a damning indictment of the country’s security architecture, blaming what he called the persistent failure of governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC-led administration.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Hashim said the US intervention reflects growing international concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation, particularly in the North-West, where terrorist groups are steadily consolidating their influence.

According to the former presidential candidate, responsible global actors cannot afford to ignore the emergence of an IS foothold in Nigeria, stressing that the country is “too large, too strategic, and too important to be allowed to fail.”

Hashim revealed that since 2021 , and more intensely over the past year, his team had repeatedly warned that security modelling in the North-West pointed towards a dangerous trajectory, including the potential emergence of an IS-aligned enclave if urgent action was not taken.

He attributed the worsening insecurity to deepening poverty, prolonged governance failure, and weakened institutions, which he said have emboldened extremist groups while silencing moderate political and secular voices across the region.

“More worrying is the elevation of individuals who enable or rationalise extremism into positions of political influence, creating conditions under which terror groups can aspire to territorial control,” he stated.

While acknowledging that international airstrikes may temporarily degrade terrorist capabilities, Hashim stressed that lasting solutions can only come from within.

He added that as external interventions are not expected to be one-off actions, the mechanisms guiding them must be carefully negotiated within the framework of security cooperation between sovereign nations, with clear accountability structures and transparent reporting measures to prevent abuse and ensure long-term stability.

“The situation in the North-West is dire. Without urgent internal reforms, improved governance, and decisive political leadership, external military interventions will not produce sustainable results,” he warned.

Hashim further questioned the readiness of the APC-led government to undertake the critical internal reforms needed to stabilise the country, arguing that Nigeria continues to grapple with fundamental governance and security deficits that threaten its democratic future.

He also alleged that the government’s apparent reluctance to act decisively may stem from political compromises made during the 2015 struggle for power, compromises he said now constrain its ability to confront extremist elements head-on.

Concluding, Hashim warned that Nigeria can no longer afford denial or half-measures in the face of what he described as an existential threat, calling for urgent, courageous leadership to prevent further deterioration of national security.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has pledged unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu’s second term.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said Mr Wike made the pledge on Saturday while meeting PDP stakeholders in Ochigba, Rivers.

Mr Wike attended an end-of-year thanksgiving service organised by former Deputy Speaker of the House, Chibudom Nwuche, in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers.

Addressing stakeholders, Mr Wike said their struggle would not be in vain, urging them to continue supporting Mr Tinubu despite what he described as intimidation in the state.

He recalled openly backing Mr Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, even when support was difficult in Rivers.

Mr Wike said he would continue to support the president now that conditions were easier, stressing that early supporters were recognised after Mr Tinubu’s victory.

“I want to thank you for standing with us all through these years. We know those who are ungrateful,” he said.

He said political courage was required in 2023, when many were unsure of Mr Tinubu’s chances and feared openly supporting him.

“In politics, you must take a stand, believing that at the end of the day, it will be good. Now, it is good,” Mr Wike said.

He added that his supporters made Mr Tinubu “stand strong” in the state when it was difficult to declare loyalty.

“Agreement is agreement. Anything you cannot do, don’t say it,” he told supporters.

Mr Wike dismissed critics chanting loyalty slogans, saying his camp acted “when it mattered most”.

He said he remained firm on supporting Mr Tinubu, adding, “We are all in this till the end.”

Onyedega, Kogi State – The Ejeh of Ibaji, Hrh (Dr) Odiche John Egwemi, has appealed to Kogi State authorities to allocate the Chairmanship and Secretaryship of Kogi Oil Producing Area Development Commission (KOSOPADEC) to Ibaji, citing it as “the area that lays the golden eggs”.

“This is standard practice in Oil Producing Communities around Nigeria. He who wears a shoe knows where it pinches. Let Ibaji People play a vital role in managing the Oil found on their land,” Egwemi said in an interview with SummitPost on December 26, 2025.

The call aligns with Ibaji People’s aspirations, who’ve been seeking justice and equity following the amended KOSOPADEC Law of July 2025, which they deem “repugnant, oppressive, and unjust”.

“We appealed to Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo to act in good faith and facilitate the reversal of the amended law,” stakeholders said in a statement. “Ibaji stood firmly with the present administration during the last elections… it’s unjust that we’re now subjected to policies undermining our dignity, voice, and future.”

It would be recalled that the federal government, through Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), had in 2022, recognised Kogi State as an oil-producing state. Same year, the former governor, Yahaya Bello, confirmed during a State Executive Council meeting that the had received its first 13 percent derivation funds.

Linus Oota writes that Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, designed his 2026 budget to sustain the momentum of his administration’s reforms.

On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Nasarawa State Governor, Engr Abdullahi Sule, presented the 2026 appropriation bill to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.

During the presentation, the governor expressed the desire of his administration to sustain the industrialization policy he promised the people of the state in 2019 and the drive is underpinned by both the size of the budget and sectoral allocations that indicate where emphasis lies.

During the six years, six months old administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule, the dream of making Nasarawa State a harbour for investment was 90 percent realized.

The 2026 budget of Strategic Consolidation has a total size of Five Hundred and Seventeen Billion, Fifty Thousand, Nine Hundred and Ten Naira and Seventy-Seven Kobo (N517,539,050,910.77) only.

According to Governor Sule “The 2026 Budget therefore, represents a strategic consolidation of our achievements over the years and a deliberate effort to chart a sustainable path for accelerated development.

“The Budget is aimed at achieving the developmental aspiration of our administration viz-a-viz the policy direction of the APC government under the leadership of our amiable President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR),” he said.

Looking at the budget and the aspirations of Governor Abdullahi Sule, the budget is no doubt audacious in outlook. The proposed budget evidently captured the dreams of the governor to manage effectively the resources of the state to make a positive impact on the people of Nasarawa State.

The 2025 budget which was presented in November 2024 deepens the governor’s efforts in tackling security challenges headlong and ensuring profitable Agricultural yields.

Speaking on the gains of the 2025 budget in the area of Security and Agriculture, Governor Abdullahi Sule told the lawmakers that the attraction of investments into the state was directly linked to peace and harmonious co-existence of the populace.

“On agriculture, you are aware that Nasarawa is an agrarian State with good climatic conditions and soil texture. This is why we have continued to take advantage of this opportunity to prioritize and focus on boosting our agricultural production for food value-chain addition.

“We also committed to ensure full exploitation of our potential in the agricultural sector. In this connection, the government has sustained the distribution of farm inputs to our farmers in order to support agricultural development in the State.

“I am happy to inform you that in our commitment to ensure food security for the State, Government expanded cultivation to 3,300 hectares of farm out of the 10,000 hectares of land acquired in Jangwa and Agwatashi of Awe and Obi Local Government Areas respectively.  As I speak, harvest has begun and we are expecting 8 tons per hectare to be harvested at the end of the season.

“This administration has also procured and distributed tractors and other agriculture machinery, as well as farm inputs to our farmers in our determination to enhance mechanized agriculture and its sustainability,” the governor added.

The 2026 budget,  notable for its substantial increase from previous years, indicates the state’s ambitions to accelerate development and improve residents’ quality of life. Significant allocations go to key sectors such as education, health, infrastructure, and agriculture/industry, security which are crucial for stimulating economic growth, creating job opportunities, and ensuring the populace’s overall well-being.

Investments in infrastructure, including roads and healthcare, are expected to enhance connectivity and access to essential services. Specifically, infrastructure received 157.80 billion representing 30.49% , Education got 92.91 billion representing 7.95%, the Health Sector was allocated 37.19 billion representing 7.19%  while the Agricultural sector was given 31.85 billion representing 6.15% .

The budget which overwhelmingly prioritizes infrastructure, reflected the Governor’s focus on delivering critical projects he has consistently proclaimed. Tagged, the ‘Budget of Strategic Consolidation,’ the document aimed at accelerating ongoing projects and launching new ones.

Recall that, in the midst of strident calls by admirers from across his Nasarawa North zone for him to declare interest to run for the Senate, Governor Sule has consistently called on the people not to distract him but to allow him to focus on delivering critical infrastructure for the sustainable growth and development of the state.

Therefore, it is not surprising  that the 2026 financial plan allocates N157.8 billion to infrastructure—30.49% of the total budget and the largest share of any sector. This substantial investment highlights the administration’s conviction that robust physical infrastructure is vital for unlocking economic potential and improving citizens’ quality of life.

Most significantly, the budget is strategically tilted toward capital projects, with 58.88% (N304.75 billion) earmarked for capital expenditure to ensure resources are directed toward tangible development.

This infrastructure focus builds on progress made over the past six years, during which the Sule administration has constructed about 639 kilometers of road networks, with recent initiatives to include new rural road projects in Akwanga, Nassarawa-Eggon, and Wamba Local Government Areas, such as the 17km Buku/Kambre/Numa Gona/Bayan Dutse link and the 21.5km Alizaga Hill Umme to Arugbadu road.

These projects are designed to open up and connect rural communities, fostering inclusive socio-economic growth by linking agricultural areas to markets.

The infrastructure drive is also not only limited to rural communities but extends to urban centers. Residents of Lafia, Keffi, and Akwanga are witnessing transformative projects like the recently commissioned Lafia Ahmed Bola Tinubu interchange and ongoing construction of flyovers and underpasses. These initiatives are expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, facilitate the movement of goods, and stimulate commerce.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the 2026 budget is a multi-faceted development tool. The economic sector received the second-largest allocation of N221.84 billion to support job creation through industrialization, small and medium enterprise (SME) support, and agricultural productivity.

This policy thrust is in line with a recent major achievement: the groundbreaking of a $400 million rare earth and critical metals processing plant by Hasetins Commodities Limited in Uke, Karu Local Government Area.

Touted as a game changer and set to be the largest of its kind in Africa, the plant will process elements essential for electric vehicles, medical equipment, and advanced manufacturing. During the groundbreaking, Governor Sule commended the project as a historic milestone that will position Nasarawa as a high-technology production hub and create numerous jobs for the state’s youth.

The social sector is another key beneficiary, with an allocation of N170.92 billion. This includes N92.91 billion for education and N37.19 billion for health. These resources are intended to enhance the quality and accessibility of essential services, building on previous efforts such as recruiting teachers and healthcare staff, upgrading primary healthcare centers to general hospitals, and expanding health insurance coverage for the poor and vulnerable.

 To ensure sustainable human capital development beyond its tenure, the administration has also established six strategic new agencies in key sectors to drive modernization, institutional strengthening, economic growth, public safety, and regulatory framework.

 “These agencies include: Nasarawa State Fire and Rescue Service Agency, Nasarawa State Education Trust Fund (NASETFund), Institute of Leather and Science Technology, DOMA, Nasarawa State Multi-Door Court House (NSMDC) and in response to the expanding electricity market following the decentralization of power regulation in Nigeria.

 “We have also established Nasarawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission to oversee the generation, transmission, distribution, and marketing of electricity within the State.

“This new regulatory framework is expected to improve power supply reliability, encourage private sector participation, and support industrial growth across the State. We have also domesticated the made in Nigeria Project Office in Nasarawa State. This is in our commitment to promoting local content in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government

“I wish to state that these newly established Agencies Mark a significant shift towards strategic reforms, empowering citizens, driving economic growth, enhancing security, and strengthening institutions. I invite partners, stakeholders, investors, and the public to join us in supporting these Agencies as they drive transformative changes and improve service delivery across Nasarawa State” Sule had said

The 2026 budget will be funded partly through the government’s expected revenue of an estimated total recurrent revenue of N302,521,043,791.16 only from FAAC and IGR, and capital receipts which includes aid, grants, and capital development funds, which form part of deficit financing of N151, 435,982,663.34 only.

According to Governor Sule “the total expenditure budget for fiscal year 2026 is structured into N212,789,330,249.07 only, and this represents 41.12% recurrent expenditure and a total capital expenditure of N304,749,720,661.70 representing 58.88%. the ratio of the recurrent to capital spending shows another improvement in our commitment to investing in capital spending” he said

Speaking on the milestones achieved in the 2025 budget despite the challenges of an unstable economic environment, including inflationary pressures, fluctuating exchange rates and national uncertainties, Governor Abdullahi Sule told the state lawmakers that.

“I need to State that at the end of October 2025, Nasarawa State had generated a total revenue of N235.048 billion including opening balance which represents 61.16% of the total projected revenue for the fiscal year.

This includes N127.20 billion from the Federation Account Committee (FAAC) and N27.31 billion from Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). Additionally, we received N26.51 billion as capital receipts from aid, grants, and capital development funds, which from part of deficit financing.

“The total expenditure for the 2025 budget as at October 31st, 2025, stood at N226.36 billion, representing 58.90% of the approved expenditure for the year. Of this, N106.11 billion was spent on recurrent costs, with priority given to the regular payment of staff salaries, gratuities/pension, debt servicing and other running costs.

“The capital expenditure for the period was N120.25 billion, representing 53.75%, this is the highest capex performance in a fiscal year since the creation of the State. Our revenue collection and public expenditure management reforms are yielding results , with notable improvements in independent revenue (Internally Generated Revenue) performance. However, to sustain this momentum, we must make efforts to identify and tap into new revenue sources to reduce over reliance on external sources,” Governor Sule added

Our correspondent gathered that the 2026 Budget seeks to consolidate ongoing infrastructure projects to enhance connectivity and economic competitiveness, expand job creation through industrialization, SME support, and agricultural productivity, and improve the quality and accessibility of basic healthcare and education services.

Others include Intensify urban renewal efforts and strengthen environmental management, deepen the digital transformation of government operations for improved service delivery, enhance social protection mechanisms for the poor and vulnerable, sustain investments in security to safeguard lives, property, and economic activities, deepening fiscal sustainability and efficiency.

The budget equally seems to accelerate infrastructure delivery, strengthening human capital development especially in education, health, and other critical sub-sectors, as well as expanding the revenue base through improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) systems.

These priorities and policy thrust reflect Governor Sule’s commitment to building a resilient, competitive, and inclusive State and the goal is to consolidate prior achievements and accelerate ongoing reforms.

Indeed, as the 2026 appropriation bill undergoes legislative review, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dr. Danladi Jatau, has promised the Governor a diligent and speedy passage, acknowledging the budget’s clear commitment to the progress of the state.

 For the people of Nasarawa State, the coming year promises intensified activity, marked by construction, new economic opportunities, and the practical delivery of the critical infrastructure Governor Sule has been championing.

 And if the last six full budgets (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025) budgets of the Abdullahi Sule led administration are signposts to his credibility and competence, the 7th full budget will definitely be an appraisal of the administration’s performance.

 Sule has often reiterated his administration’s commitment to a partnership and inclusive governance to ensure that there is focused and qualitative governance and to create the enabling environment for a public private sector partnership which is fundamental to the creation of an enduring economic development and individual prosperity of the people of Nasarawa State.

The United States has intensified its military attention on Nigeria’s security situation following recent airstrikes on terrorist positions in Sokoto State.

Focus has now shifted to the Sambisa Forest, a long-time stronghold of insurgent groups in the North-East.

Fresh intelligence activities are currently ongoing over the vast forest area located in Borno State.

The operation involves aerial surveillance aimed at monitoring movements and gathering critical security information within the region.

A well-known security analyst, Brant Philip, disclosed the development through a post on X.

He shared flight tracking details showing the presence of a high-altitude aircraft over Borno airspace.

The aircraft identified was a Gulfstream V, commonly used for advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

The flight pattern indicated repeated movements around areas linked to insurgent activities.

According to Philip, the operation is focused on the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP.

The group remains one of the most active terror factions operating in Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad Basin.

ISWAP has carried out several deadly attacks across the North-East, targeting civilians, military formations, and critical infrastructure.

Sambisa Forest has continued to serve as a strategic base due to its difficult terrain and vast coverage.

The Nigerian government has urged regional and international actors to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing the need to support efforts aimed at rebuilding a stable, prosperous and resilient Somali state.

The position was articulated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in a statement issued on Saturday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Mr Kimiebi Ebienfa.

The statement follows the announcement on December 26, 2025, by the Prime Minister of Israel that his country had officially recognised the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, addi that a joint declaration was signed alongside Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, and the President of Somaliland.

What Nigeria is saying  

Reacting to the development, Tuggar said Nigeria maintains firm and unequivocal support for the sovereignty, unity and statehood of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

He affirmed Nigeria’s recognition of Somalia’s government as the legitimate authority representing the will of the Somali people and commended ongoing efforts toward peace, security and national reconciliation.

“Nigeria stands in solidarity with Somalia and strongly condemns any actions or rhetoric undermining its constitutional order and territorial integrity,” Tuggar said. 

Call for respect for Somalia’s territorial integrity 

The foreign affairs minister urged all international stakeholders to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and refrain from actions that could destabilise the country.

“The Government of Nigeria calls on all actors to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and support its institutions in rebuilding a stable, prosperous and resilient nation,” he said. 

“We believe Somalia’s stability is integral to peace and security across the Horn of Africa and the wider African continent.” 

Tuggar added that Nigeria remains committed to supporting Somalia through multilateral engagement and international cooperation.

“Therefore, Nigeria remains committed to supporting Somalia through multilateral frameworks and international cooperation,” he stated. 

Warning against recognition of Somaliland 

The minister warned that recognising any part of Somalia as an independent entity could escalate tensions and deepen the crisis in the region.

“The Government of Nigeria urges international actors to desist from recognising any part of Somalia as an independent entity,” Tuggar said, warning that such actions should be avoided. 

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all United Nations and African Union member states.

According to him, Nigeria will continue to uphold these principles as enshrined in the United Nations Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.

The Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) has, in seven months of operations, killed 438 Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists.

Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, the Theatre Commander, OPHK, North-east Sector 1, who made this known on Saturday at the Christmas Luncheon in Maiduguri, said the operations were coordinated between May and December.

Abubakar said the operatives have also recovered 254 assorted weapons, 300 units of Starlink communication devices and rescued 366 civilians from various terrorist enclaves.

“The surrender of 881 JAS/ISWAP fighters and their families, among other accomplishments, further underscores the progress made,” he said.

The army general said that the Christmas celebration coincided with their dry season operations in the Theatre.

He, however, assured the Chief of Army Staff of the unwavering commitment of their gallant forces to maintain the tempo of operations.

Abubakar also attributed the successes recorded in the Joint Operations Area (JOA) to the Chief of Army Staff’s interventions.

The Customs Area Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Compt. Aliyu Gambo has cautioned smugglers operating across land borders and Nigeria’s waterways in the South West to desist from illegal activities, stressing that, there will be no safe routes and no hiding places.

Speaking to journalists, the newly appointed Customs CAC, stated that, surveillance, patrols, and intelligence-led operations would be intensified to ensure that smugglers are apprehended and prosecuted.

According to him, anyone involved in smuggling, regardless of scale or route, will be made to face the full weight of the law.

Gambo also warned importers and clearing agents who believe they can short-change the government through under-payment, under-declaration, false declaration, or trade misinvoicing that such practices will be uncovered.

He said, “importers who think they can evade their obligations through under-declaration or under-payment should rethink, because Customs will detect these practices and recover every kobo due to the government.”

He explained that, “Customs is strengthening risk assessment systems, post-clearance audits, and intelligence collaboration to track consignments from origin to destination, noting that “distance or foreign shipping points will not shield non-compliance.”

While reaffirming Customs’ commitment to facilitating legitimate trade, Gambo stressed that compliance remains non-negotiable, stating that “those who play by the rules have nothing to fear, but compliance is not optional.”

On Reputational Management, the Controller said accountability and transparency are central to public trust, noting that the ethical tone set by the CGC has significantly improved public perception of the Service.

He assured that FOU Zone A would sustain and deepen these gains, emphasising that “Customs has a social contract with Nigerians and must deliver value without losing sight of its mandate in the trade value chain.”

Beyond revenue and trade facilitation, Gambo highlighted the security dimension of Customs operations, warning of the nexus between smuggling, illicit drugs, arms proliferation, and rising criminality.

He observed that, challenges such as banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping make effective border control a national security imperative critical to protecting lives, the economy, and national stability.

Gambo has pledged to intensify intelligence-driven operations, strengthen stakeholder collaboration, and promote welfare and professionalism within the ranks ensuring that FOU Zone A not only sustains its anti-smuggling successes but also advances the broader objectives of the service economic protection, trade facilitation, and national security.

He stressed that, sustainable reform begins with mindset change, noting that, officers must internalise professionalism, discipline, and service values, while stakeholders must appreciate that Customs operations are guided strictly by national interest and the rule of law.

He explained that, Customs operates within a complex, post-globalisation trade environment that demands adaptability, intelligence-led enforcement, and constructive stakeholder engagement, adding that, change must be both internal and external, reshaping behaviour while strengthening institutional culture.

On compliance management, Gambo emphasised strict adherence to procedures and ethical standards, balanced with an understanding of Nigeria’s trade realities.

He made it clear that compliance would not be optional, but enforcement would be firm, fair, and intelligence-driven.

They are now currently carrying out intelligence and surveillance operations in the large expanse of land within Borno State.

Kwara State Governor, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said that there is no place for terrorists and kidnappers to hide in the state anymore with the full deployment of Forests Guards across major areas of the state.

Governor AbdulRazaq thanked the security forces for their commitment to protect lives, saying a synergy with the new auxiliary forces who were all drawn from local communities will strengthen the campaign to fight terrorists and kidnap purposes.
He stated, “Today opens a new page in our campaign against all forms of terrorism, kidnapping, and opportunist attacks on our people by bad faith actors who exploit our vast territories for evil purposes,” he said.

“And the message is very clear: more than ever before, the terrorists now have the option of immediately leaving our state or paying a heavy price.
“Today’s launch of the forest guards simply means that we are going on the offensive because our people deserve their peace as freeborns. We have had enough Anyone who thinks or acts otherwise is our enemy who will not be spared.
“Distinguished Forest Guards, you are embarking on a national assignment to protect our people from all criminals in our forests. Working with gallant officers and personnel of the security forces, you are to go all out to flush out the terrorists, restore sanity in our forests, and keep our communities safer than they ever were.

“I commend the President of the Federal Republic for this bold policy response to the security situation in our country and the larger Sahel Region. I thank the leadership of the National Security Adviser for pulling this through.
“I am also confident that all the security forces will work together with the forest guards to end this menace once and for all.
“More importantly, I urge the people of Kwara State to work with the security forces and the forest guards to flush out the terrorists and make our state uninhabitable for them,” the governor added

At least 141 Nigerian nationals have been arrested in Ghana over their alleged involvement in cyber-enabled financial crimes, including mobile money fraud and business email compromise scams.

Ghana’s Commissioner for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel George, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

The statement said the arrests came after a coordinated early-morning operation carried out by the Cyber Security Authority of Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Security and the Ghana Immigration Service.

According to the statement, the operation was conducted across key locations in Tabora and Lashibi.

It revealed that 100 suspects were arrested in Tabora, while 41 others were apprehended in Lashibi, bringing the total number of arrests to 141.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects are believed to be Nigerian nationals.

Law enforcement agencies also recovered 38 laptops and 150 mobile phones suspected to have been used in perpetrating cyber-related financial crimes.

During the operation, a Ghanaian landlord who allegedly accommodated about 100 of the suspects in his house was also arrested.

The authorities warned that landlords have a responsibility to ensure their properties are not used to facilitate criminal activities.

The suspects were allegedly involved in offences including mobile money fraud, romance scams, sextortion, business email compromise and wire fraud.

“Forensic analysis of the seized devices is underway, and individuals found culpable will be processed in accordance with Ghanaian law,” the statement said.

The Ghanaian authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious digital activities, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to combating cybercrime.

“Ghana remains welcoming to all friends and neighbours interested in legitimate enterprise. However, if you are interested in committing cybercrime, we will find you, arrest you, and deal with you decisively according to our laws,” the statement added.

Borno South Senator, Ali Ndume, has urged President Bola Tinubu to extend ongoing United States-Nigeria operations against terrorist groups to the north-east region of Nigeria.

Mr Ndume, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram maintain strongholds in the North-east that require immediate military action through targeted aerial bombardments.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the senator welcomed Nigeria’s collaboration with the United States on counterterrorism operations but stressed that such efforts should not be limited to parts of the North-west.

“We welcome this cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in targeting terrorist hideouts.

“I am calling on them to extend it to the North east where ISWAP and Boko Haram have their three known black spots: Lake Chad, Mandara Mountain and Sambisa, which are exclusive strongholds of ISWAP and Boko Haram,” he said.

The North-east region comprises Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states.

The US airstrike

PREMIUM TIMES had reported the joint US–Nigeria operation against identified terrorist targets in Tangaza and Tambuwal Local Hovernment Areas of Sokoto State.

The operation, which took place on Christmas Day, targeted locations believed to be hideouts of Islamic State-linked militants along the Nigeria–Niger border.

The attacks were the result of intelligence sharing and strategic coordination between the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Nigerian military.

In recent years, Tangaza has seen the emergence of a group known as the Lakurawa. Originally a group of foreign herders from Sahelian countries, they have evolved into a terrorist group that imposes taxes on locals and enforces their own version of justice, often clashing with traditional authorities.

A US military official told The New York Times that the strike involved more than a dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from a Navy ship in the Gulf of Guinea, hitting insurgents in two ISIS camps in Sokoto State.

US Africa Command said its initial assessment indicated that “multiple” ISIS terrorists were killed at the request of Nigerian authorities.

Nigeria’s foreign affairs minister, Yusuf Tuggar, later confirmed that President Bola Tinubu had approved the strikes and that Nigeria had shared intelligence with the US to ensure the strikes’ success.

Call for expanded military support

Mr Ndume further urged the federal government to ensure that the collaboration with the United States goes beyond airstrikes.

He called for enhanced training, intelligence sharing, logistics support and the deployment of attack helicopters to assist Nigerian ground troops in combating terrorism.

“I also want to suggest that the military cooperation with the United States should extend to ground troops in training, intelligence and logistics. They should also back it up with attack helicopters support for ground troops,” he stated.

Reacting to the recent suicide bombing at a mosque in Gamboru, Maiduguri, which claimed five lives, the senator expressed condolences to the victims and their families.

“I also sympathise with the bomb blasts victims in Borno State, where many people were killed and injured. The incident in the mosque in Gamboru is a clear indication that the terrorists don’t care about religion.

“In this instant, on the eve of Christmas, all the victims were Muslims. So, the narrative of Christian genocide doesn’t exists. The terrorists making life unbearable for our people are blind to religion.”

Fresh political tension may be brewing in Rivers State following comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, which suggest that the long-running political rift in the state is far from over.

Wike’s remarks have raised questions about the sustainability of the widely publicised peace arrangement involving him and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

His latest statements point to a possible renewed political confrontation as the new year approaches.

The former Rivers governor spoke on Saturday during a meeting with political stakeholders from Ahoada East and Ahoada West Local Government Areas.

He disclosed that political activities would resume fully from January 2026, a declaration that immediately stirred reactions across the state.

The meeting took place shortly after a thanksgiving service organised by Chibudom Nwuche, Chairman of the South-South Development Forum. The event was held in Nwuche’s hometown, Ochigba community, in Ahoada East LGA.

While addressing his supporters, Wike took a swipe at unnamed political actors he accused of reaping benefits from the sacrifices of others during the 2023 general elections.

He alleged that some individuals failed to show courage when political tension was high, especially during the campaign period that led to the emergence of President Bola Tinubu.

According to the FCT minister, many who now openly associate with the President did not publicly declare their support when it mattered most. He insisted that he and his political camp stood by Tinubu at a time when it was risky to do so.

Wike said, “In that 2023, it was difficult for so many people to come out to say, vote for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“But we did it, when it was tough for people to say on your mandate we stand. We stood firm and said on your mandate we stand.

“And to the glory of God, we stood and on your mandate we stand today is very strong.

“So you are the ones who made the mandate to be strong as far as Rivers State is concerned.”

He questioned the sudden loyalty of those now praising the President, asking where they were during the peak of the electioneering period. He noted that such individuals neither spoke openly nor mobilised their supporters in support of Tinubu in 2023.

Wike assured his followers that their efforts and sacrifices would not be ignored or wasted. However, he refrained from mentioning names while making the allegations.

Reaffirming his political readiness, Wike told the crowd that the time for political engagement was approaching. “And we are going forward from January next year. Let me inform you, we will start politics. Let me inform you, we will start what, politics,” he declared.

The minister also spoke extensively on the issue of trust and political agreements. He stressed that he does not believe in agreements that cannot be respected or implemented.

“You know me, I believe in agreement is agreement. Agreement is what, agreement,” he said.

“Anything you know you cannot do, don’t say it. Don’t enter into it.

“Nobody can use us to say let me say yes I agree, later. No, you can’t do that. Whatever you have agreed in the morning, you must agree in the night.”

Wike added that those making loud political declarations now only did so because others had already laid the groundwork earlier. He maintained that firmness at critical moments defines true loyalty.

The FCT minister noted that he has never concealed his political stance and described himself as one of the most criticised politicians in the country. He attributed this to his refusal to compromise on agreements and principles.

Despite the political undercurrents, Wike reassured the people of Ahoada of his continued support and appreciation. He urged them not to be worried, saying they had no reason to fear and that events would unfold at the appropriate time.

He also reaffirmed his unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu, stating that his political alignment remains unchanged.

The thanksgiving ceremony attracted several prominent political figures. Those in attendance included Senator Magnus Abe, Senator Philip Aduda, Senator Wilson Ake, and Senator Olaka Wogu.

Others present were ambassador-designate Aaron Chukwuemeka, OCJ Okocha, Ferdinand Anabrabra, and other notable political associates.

Recall that, Politics Nigeria previously reported the fragile political truce reached between key power blocs in Rivers State following months of legislative paralysis, street protests, and federal intervention.

President Bola Tinubu’s Presidential Forest Guards Initiative launched in May 2025 as part of the renewed efforts by his administration to tackle the nationwide insecurity has yielded fruits as over 7,000 newly recruited Nigerian Forest Guards graduated yesterday following the successful completion of an intensive three-month training programme.
The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), which announced this development, said the graduation ceremonies were held across Borno, Sokoto, Yobe, Adamawa, Niger, Kwara, and Kebbi states.

Meanwhile, some security experts have lauded President Tinubu’s plan to mobilise the forest guards to ungoverned forests in the seven pilot states, saying their knowledge of forest terrains could significantly enhance the effectiveness of security operations.
The Forest Guards are indigenous to their respective local government areas, enabling them to leverage terrain familiarity and community trust in countering banditry, kidnapping, and the illegal exploitation of forest resources.

Speaking on the mandate of the guards at the graduation ceremonies, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, said they would guard Nigeria’s natural environment and also serve as a critical force multiplier in national security architecture, particularly in supporting the efforts of security agencies to checkmate perpetrators of insecurity.
He stated that the Nigerian Forest Guards is an inter-agency initiative established under his leadership and strategic guidance, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Ribadu noted that it was coordinated operationally by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Park Services.
“It draws strategic input, doctrine, and operational alignment from the Defence Headquarters, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). This synergy ensures unity of purpose, seamless command and control, as well as operational effectiveness,” he added.

Ribadu described the initiative as a decisive step toward restoring state authority and protecting vulnerable communities.
He lauded the contributions of the training instructors and coordinators from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police, DSS, NSCDC, National Park Service, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and the governments of the seven pilot states.
“I wish to assure the public that the Forest Guards will be deployed immediately to identify hot spots to enhance existing security architecture, particularly in forested and ungoverned areas. As first responders, they are expected to dominate and ensure the security of the forest ecosystem, gather actionable human intelligence, support ongoing security operations, and enhance presence in hitherto ungoverned spaces,” Ribadu explained.

According to the NSA, the training programme was deliberately intensive, structured, and demanding, designed to transform loyal and committed Nigerians into agile, disciplined, and capable field operatives.
The curriculum integrated environmental conservation principles with advanced security competencies, ensuring a balanced, professional, and mission-ready force.

Trainees underwent extensive physical and mental conditioning, including endurance exercises, obstacle-crossing drills, and long-range patrol simulations to prepare them for sustained forest operations.
They were also trained in tactical fieldcraft, including movement techniques, enemy-contact drills, ambush response, rescue operations, and coordinated offensive actions—equipping them to deny criminal elements any form of sanctuary within Nigeria’s forest spaces.
The training programme was said to have recorded a 98.2 per cent completion rate.

A total of 81 trainees were disqualified on disciplinary grounds, while two trainees passed away due to pre-existing medical conditions.
Governors and Deputy Governors from the seven participating states attended the ceremonies, including Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, with other states represented by their deputy governors.
AbdulRazaq called the initiative a game changer, which he said would leave the terrorists and kidnappers with the option of either leaving Kwara State or paying a heavy price.

“The enlistment of armed forest guards to complement the patriotic efforts of our security forces is a game changer in this campaign. It shows very clearly that the government is committed to the mission of ridding our country of all forms of terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings,” the governor said.
He commended President Tinubu for “thinking out of the box” to repossess Nigeria’s forest resources, expel all the bad faith actors occupying the forests, and strengthen public safety.

Security Experts Hail Plan to Deploy Forest Guards against Kidnappers, Bandits

Meanwhile, some security experts have lauded President Tinubu’s plan to deploy forest guards as a strategic measure to combat banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria.
The experts noted that combining local expertise with formal security forces would improve intelligence gathering, disrupt illegal activities, and strengthen national security.

A retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Edgal Imohimi, who was Lagos State Commissioner of Police, described the initiative as a step in the right direction if properly structured.
He said an effective forest guard would complement national security by providing local intelligence and filling security gaps in forested and semi-urban areas.
Imohimi noted that recruiting personnel from local communities would enhance terrain knowledge and intelligence gathering, while training in jungle warfare and tracking would improve effectiveness.

A retired Commissioner of Police (CP) Emmanuel Ojukwu, described the plan as a welcome development, noting that the fight against insecurity requires coordination and collaboration between security agencies and the public.
“Forest guards have strong familiarity with the terrain. They are well acquainted with the forest environment and know how to navigate it. They understand human movement as distinct from that of animals, and this knowledge allows them to assist security agencies in identifying the locations of terrorist and bandit camps,” he said.

A retired diplomat, Ambassador Ejike Eze, also praised the initiative, but stressed the need for clearly defined roles.
“It is a laudable initiative, but the government must ensure that every security agency adheres to its constitutionally defined responsibilities. Forest guards should not be guiding VIPs or remaining in offices, as some other agencies do. They must operate fully within the forests, permanently deployed where they are most needed. Our forests should be divided into operational divisions, and commanders must be directed to man these divisions effectively,” he said.

 Eze drew comparisons with Cuba, noting that authorities there monitor their forests around the clock.
“You cannot drop a pin in a Cuban forest without operatives identifying its location. Those who terrorise us operate from our forests, and a well-deployed local force can play a crucial role in tackling these threats,” he added.

However, a former Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Lawrence Alobi, expressed reservations about the plan.
“I don’t share the president’s sentiment. Some advisors are guiding the president based on political interests rather than the country’s security needs. Each state already has a police command, military base, Civil Defence, DSS, and other security actors. Creating a Forest Guard raises questions: What will they do, and who will supervise them?” he queried.

Alobi argued that national security would be better served by strengthening the Nigeria Police through reform.
Former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Owoseni (rtd), who is currently the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Oyo State Government, said the problem is not the creation of new units but poor integration.

The sustained offensive by troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), has continued to yield significant gains, with no fewer than 438 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists neutralised within seven months.

The Theatre Commander, OPHK, North-east Sector 1, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, disclosed this on Saturday in Maiduguri during the 2025 Christmas Luncheon organised for troops in the Theatre of Operations.

Abubakar said the period under review also witnessed the recovery of 254 assorted weapons and about 300 units of Starlink communication devices, which had been deployed by terrorists to enhance their command, control and intelligence-gathering capabilities.

According to him, the troops equally rescued 366 civilians, including women and children, from various terrorist enclaves across the North-east.

“The surrender of 881 JAS and ISWAP fighters and their families, among other accomplishments, further underscores the progress made by our troops in degrading the operational strength and morale of the terrorists,” the theatre commander said.

He described the achievements as a reflection of the resilience, professionalism and sacrifice of officers and soldiers operating under extremely challenging conditions in the Joint Operations Area (JOA).

Abubakar noted that the Christmas celebration coincided with the ongoing dry season operations, a critical phase traditionally marked by intensified military action against insurgent hideouts.

Despite the demanding operational tempo, he assured the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, of the unwavering commitment of troops to sustain pressure on the terrorists until lasting peace is restored in the region.

“The gallant officers and soldiers of Operation Hadin Kai remain fully committed to maintaining the momentum of our operations, in line with the strategic guidance of the Chief of Army Staff,” he said.

The theatre commander attributed the successes recorded in the JOA to the COAS’ timely interventions, particularly in the areas of logistics support, welfare of troops, improved firepower and enhanced intelligence coordination.

He added that the synergy among the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies and other security stakeholders had also contributed significantly to the operational breakthroughs.

Abubakar used the occasion to commend the Federal Government, the Defence Headquarters and the Borno State Government for their sustained support to military operations in the North-east.

He also paid tribute to fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in the fight against terrorism, urging troops to remain steadfast and disciplined as operations progress.

The Christmas luncheon, which featured prayers and goodwill messages, was aimed at boosting the morale of troops deployed across the Theatre during the festive season.
