The New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, has appealed to Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State not to defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The Chairman of the NNPP in Kano State, Suleiman Dungurawa, made this appeal at a press briefing on Monday in Kano.

Dungurawa also debunked speculations that some party members were planning to create enmity between the governor and the national leader of the party, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The Kano NNPP chairman further advised residents of the state to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities.

He, however, warned party members not to append their names to documents allegedly being circulated by mischief makers.

“On behalf of all of us collectively, we once again appeal to them, for the sake of Allah and the Prophet, not to leave this party and not to defect to the party that we have opposed and which the masses and other voters have rejected.

“We are aware of the developments happening here in Kano State concerning some individuals who intend to defect to the APC.

“I want to make it clear that the Kano State party, the national party, and our national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, together with other leaders, do not approve of what is happening.”

Recall that the Director-General of the Protocol Directorate of Kano State Government House, Abdullahi Rogo, had said that citizens of the state and voters have agreed that Rabiu Kwankwaso and Governor Abba Yusuf should defect to the APC from the NNPP.

Ododo Flags Off APC E-Registration At His Ward

calls for Massive Participation

The Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, on Monday officially flagged off the All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic registration exercise at his Upogoro Ward in Okene Local Government Area of the state.

The ceremony, which marked the formal commencement of the APC e-registration programme across Kogi State, attracted party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters who converged to witness the Governor revalidate his membership on the digital platform.

Speaking shortly after completing his online registration, Governor Ododo called on Kogites to seize the opportunity to register en masse as members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, describing the initiative as a major step in strengthening internal democracy and party organisation.

He noted that the e-registration platform responds to the growing interest of Nigerians who desire to identify with the party’s progressive ideology and reform agenda.

“Hundreds of thousands of people have been clamouring to register as members of our party.

“This platform has created the opportunity to achieve that seamlessly, thanks to our performing President and the national leadership of the party.”

Governor Ododo attributed the renewed confidence in the APC to the bold reforms and leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that the party has become increasingly attractive to Nigerians because of great improvements in the economy.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made our party the most attractive in Nigeria today. His policies are yielding results. The economy is gradually stabilising, the naira is strengthening, food prices are easing, and agriculture is taking centre stage once again.

“The beginning was tough, but it was necessary to build a stronger and more resilient nation.”

The Governor expressed confidence that Nigerians would reward the President’s courage and reforms with renewed trust, noting that the people have faith in his leadership and vision for the country.

Governor Ododo further charged party leaders at all levels to ensure a smooth and massive rollout of the e-registration exercise across the state, describing it as a clear demonstration that the APC is leading Nigeria into a new era of digital party management.

He directed the highest political appointee in each Local Government Area to work closely with council chairmen and key stakeholders of the party to guarantee the success of the exercise in their respective councils.

“Let us open our doors wide for others to join the progressive family. Everyone who comes into this party is welcome and will be treated as an equal stakeholder,” he assured.

Reaffirming his commitment to good governance, Governor Ododo pledged to continue delivering on the promises made to the people of Kogi State, despite the commendations his administration has continued to receive.

Since assuming office, the Governor has recorded notable achievements across critical sectors, including the strengthening of security architecture through enhanced collaboration with federal agencies and local hunters, improved access to healthcare services, renewed focus on rural electrification, rehabilitation of key road networks, and sustained investments in education and youth empowerment.

His administration has also prioritised agricultural development to boost food security and support farmers across the state.

Governor Ododo stressed that the positive feedback from the people would only motivate him to work harder, declaring that his administration would not “take its foot off the pedal” in the drive to build a safer, more prosperous, and inclusive Kogi State.

Two Dead as Ogun Govt Confirms Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua — Akelicious

The Ogun State Government has expressed profound condolences to the families, friends, and associates of the victims of a tragic road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, who narrowly escaped death on Monday.

The fatal accident occurred along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, within the Makun axis of Ogun State, and sadly claimed the lives of two persons. Anthony Joshua and three other individuals were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu at the time of the incident.

Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot. Their remains have since been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu. Anthony Joshua and the driver of the vehicle were promptly rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

The sport utility vehicle conveying the occupants was said to have rammed into a stationary truck along the expressway. While the severely damaged vehicle has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division (MTD) office, efforts are ongoing to tow the truck involved to the same location to facilitate a comprehensive investigation.

The Ogun State Government describes the incident as deeply unfortunate and painful, particularly with the loss of precious lives, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving medical care.

Motorists are therefore urged to exercise utmost caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations, especially during the festive season when vehicular movement is typically heavy. Road safety officers and other security agencies are also enjoined to intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts across the State to ensure the safety of lives and property.

Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident, which the State considers a devastating loss. As we mourn collectively, we pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and for the speedy recovery of the injured. May Almighty God grant the families left behind.

Troops neutralise senior Boko Haram commanders in Borno

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai, with support from the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force, have neutralised several senior Boko Haram commanders during coordinated airstrikes in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to Zagazola Makamai, the precision strikes were carried out on December 25, 2025, following actionable human intelligence on the movement and convergence of insurgents in the area.

According to the sources, at least 10 Boko Haram terrorists were killed in the initial airstrike. Those neutralised were identified as Abul Kaka, Ibn Mu’azu, Abu Muhammad, Ba Alhaji, Bakura, Modu, Abu Hassan, Kaka Alai, Abba Yakariye, and Bamusa.

Another terrorist, identified as Ubaida, reportedly sustained severe injuries during the operation.

The sources further revealed that a follow-up strike by Nigerian Air Force assets resulted in the instant killing of three additional terrorists.

Security assessments confirmed that most of the neutralised fighters were loyal to Bafu, a notorious Boko Haram commander operating within the Bama axis.

The operation is said to have significantly degraded the group’s fighting capability in the area, particularly among elements under Bafu’s command.

While the general security situation in Bama is currently calm, the sources cautioned that it remains unpredictable due to the fluid and evolving nature of insurgent activities in the region.

Disquiet as Air Peace chair claims Nigerian air fares among world’s cheapest

Disquiet as Air Peace chair claims Nigerian air fares among world’s cheapest

The claim by Air Peace Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Allen Onyema, that Nigerian domestic flight fares are among the “cheapest in the world” has sparked a heated debate across social media and the aviation sector in recent days.

Mr Onyema made the remarks in an interview on Arise News on Sunday, responding to allegations that Nigerian airlines were hiking fares unfairly during the Christmas season.

“It’s very painful when it’s coming from agencies that are supposed to know better. Using words like ‘exploitative’ and ‘coordinated price fixing’ is very unfair to these airlines. How did you get to that conclusion?” he asked.

He said price differences between passengers on the same flight are standard in global aviation, reflecting operational realities rather than exploitation.

“It is untrue that every fare is ₦400,000 or ₦500,000. If you check the inventory, you will still see tickets from ₦150,000. During Christmas, passengers who book ahead can still get tickets at ₦150,000,” Mr Onyema said.

Passengers travelling on the same flight may pay different prices based on booking timing and availability, which he described as “standard in aviation.”

Mr Onyema explained that high fares are also linked to operational pressures.

“Almost 65 to 70 per cent of revenue does not go to airlines, it goes to taxes and levies. Yet airlines are blamed as if they are profiteering,” he added.

Aviation expert Nura Ahmed confirmed that such pricing patterns are common in the industry.

“Differences in ticket prices on the same flight, as well as higher fares during peak travel periods, are common in global aviation. Airlines adjust prices based on demand and operating costs. What Air Peace describes aligns with standard industry pricing mechanisms, although it may appear high to passengers,” he said.

Joe Abah, governance and institutional reforms expert, said high fares reflect systemic incentives beyond airline control.

“On the issue of airfares, all parties are profiting from the high fares: the government and the airlines. NCAA has the power to ensure fair market prices, but this applies only to the base fare. That is why the airlines keep the base fare low and then load up the ticket price with things like ‘fuel surcharge’, which the NCAA cannot regulate,” he said.

Mr Abah added that agencies such as NCAA, FAAN, and NAMA are self-funded and take a percentage of airline revenues, leaving little incentive to lower fares.

He said the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) can review prices to ensure they are fair, but it cannot set them.

“Everybody benefits — airlines, aviation agencies, and government. The only people who are not happy are the consumers,” Mr Abah said.

Reacting to the issue, Michael Achimugu, director of public affairs and consumer protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), said the fare surge is largely driven by seasonal demand.

“The skyrocketing airfares are simply down to market forces — the dynamics of demand and supply, especially during the yuletide season. December airfares have absolutely NOTHING to do with taxes. Taxes did not increase in December,” he noted.

He added that fares are expected to decline in January 2026 after the peak travel period.

High Prices

Independent checks on Air Peace’s official booking platform on Monday showed a wide range of fares across domestic routes. One-way economy tickets from Abuja to Lagos ranged from ₦211,600 to ₦287,800, while fares from Abuja to Enugu and Asaba were ₦335,500. Tickets from Abuja to Owerri stood at ₦287,800; fares to Port Harcourt stood at ₦240,200, and fares from Abuja to Kano ranged from ₦102,100 to ₦383,100.

For United Nigeria Airlines, routes from Lagos and Abuja to the South East and South South regions — including Owerri, Enugu, Anambra, Port Harcourt, and Asaba — are generally fixed at ₦350,500 for one-way economy travel between 1 December 2025 and 30 January 2026. Some routes from 1 January 2026 showed lower fares.

These figures show that while some lower-fare seats exist, many travellers face significantly higher costs during the peak festive season.

Debates

Many Nigerians reacted to Mr Onyema’s remarks on social media, sharing details of both local and international fares.

Tope Fasua, special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs, wrote on Facebook that a trip from London to Dublin cost him about £30 (around ₦60,000).

“These airlines should take it easy — saying Nigerian airfares are cheap seems misleading,” he said.

On X, another user, Akinsola Akin, recounted a flight from Gatwick, London, to Glasgow on EasyJet, which cost £37 (around ₦72,000) for a one-hour, 30-minute journey. “Nigerians are being overcharged,” he wrote.

Dipo Awojide said he flew from Birmingham to Scotland for about £180, while travel between London and Manchester cost less than £200.

These accounts contrasted sharply with domestic fares during the festive season, which often range from ₦300,000 to over ₦500,000 for one-hour flights.

While Mr Onyema highlighted the availability of lower fare tickets and operational challenges, many Nigerians continue to report unaffordable fares during peak travel, amid calls for greater transparency, competition, and policy clarity in Nigeria’s domestic aviation sector.

PDP crisis: INEC biased, economical with facts – Party chieftain alleges

The Caretaker Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, South South Zone, Emma Ogidi, has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is being  biased and economical with facts amid the ongoing crisis within the party.

Ogidi said this in a statement on Monday, expressing doubts that INEC could conduct free and fair elections in the country in the future.

This is coming after INEC, citing existing court judgments and unresolved legal processes, rejected the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee of the PDP.

Ogidi, while reacting to the decision, highlighted that INEC participated in the PDP national convention process that produced the Turaki-led leadership.

“INEC has been economical with facts, and this is not good for an umpire. We invited INEC to our 101st NEC meeting and our 102nd meeting. In both meetings, INEC was present and even signed the attendance register.

“They gave us their attendance register to sign, and we also gave them our copy. INEC saw us discuss the convention, including which states were qualified to attend. Yet, surprisingly, INEC has refused to comment on this, even in court,” he said.

The party stalwart equally questioned the ability of INEC to conduct unbiased elections, warning that the PDP may take the matter to the international community.

“Marriage is a union, not ownership” — Lady questions why women must change surnames

A lady has sparked debate online after questioning why women are expected to change their surnames once they get married.

She argued that marriage, being a union, should represent two individuals coming together as equals, not one person erasing their initial identity.

Marriage should be a union of equals, not identity erasure

She explained that while tradition often dictates that women adopt their husband’s name, this practice historically positioned women as extensions of their husbands rather than independent individuals.

Because it’s tradition doesn’t make it fair or sensible. If a woman wants to take her husband’s name, please take it, but let it be your choice, not something expected by default,” she said.

The post quickly drew varied reactions from social media users.

NNPP Pleads with Kano Governor Yusuf to Stay, Not to Defect to APC

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has appealed to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to remain with the party amid growing talks of a possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party said the call was necessary due to rising political speculations suggesting that the governor and some party members may be considering a move to the ruling party at the federal level.

Speaking in Kano, the NNPP Chairman in the state, Suleiman Hashim Dungurawa, said the plea reflects the collective decision of party leaders and members across Kano.

“On behalf of all of us collectively, we once again appeal to them, for the sake of Allah and the Prophet, not to leave this party and not to defect to the party that we have opposed,” Dungurawa said.

He urged Governor Yusuf and other elected officials under the NNPP platform to remember the trust given to them by voters during the 2023 general elections.

According to him, the party’s mandate in Kano was built on shared principles and promises made to the people.

Dungurawa explained that the NNPP leadership was actively working to resolve internal disagreements that may have fueled defection rumours. He said consultations were ongoing to prevent divisions within the party.

He also noted that the party’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside other key stakeholders, remained firmly opposed to any alliance or movement towards the APC.

“We did everything within our power to persuade them to be patient and not defect to the APC, because of our responsibility to them and our responsibility to the people of Kano,” he stated.

The NNPP chairman rejected claims that some party leaders were attempting to create tension between Governor Yusuf and Kwankwaso.

He described such allegations as false and misleading.

“We have never put anyone against our leader, and if anyone has evidence, let them present it,” he said.

Dungurawa further advised party members to be cautious of documents allegedly circulating online and offline, warning that such materials were the handiwork of individuals seeking to destabilise the party.

He also called on residents of Kano State to remain calm and go about their lawful activities, assuring them that efforts were being made to safeguard political stability in the state.

Reacting to the development, the Director-General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature, confirmed that internal disagreements exist within the party.

“Yes, there are issues within the party, and we are aware of the disagreements,” Bature said. “However, I cannot speak on any matter relating to defection at this time”.

Governor Yusuf, who emerged victorious on the NNPP platform in the 2023 governorship election, remains the party’s only sitting governor nationwide.

His government has not officially declared any intention to leave the party despite persistent claims by rival political groups.

The NNPP said it would continue engagements with its leaders, elected officials, and supporters in Kano to strengthen unity and protect the party’s political structure in the state.

What you should know

Four tax reform laws have been enacted under the Tinubu administration. Two of the laws took effect in June 2025, while two are scheduled for January 1, 2026.

Despite the controversies surrounding the two laws, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, told journalists on Friday that the implementation will proceed as planned from January 1.

According to Oyedele, the new laws will deliver significant tax relief across the economy.

  • He said about 98% of Nigerian workers will either pay no PAYE tax or pay lower taxes under the new framework.
  • He also noted that approximately 97% of small businesses will be exempt from corporate income tax, VAT, and withholding tax, while large companies will benefit from reduced tax liabilities.
  • The laws, he said, are intended to promote economic growth, inclusivity, and shared prosperity.

Oyedele said the tax reform bills spent nine months at the National Assembly between October 2024 and June 2025, allowing preparations to begin early.

Since the laws were signed, he said the government has spent the last six months on capacity building, system upgrades, and stakeholder sensitisation.

Ronaldo sets sights on 1,000 goals before retirement

By Adegboyega Adeleye

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has reaffirmed his commitment to playing football, as he says he will not retire until he scores his 1,000th career goal.

The 40-year-old scored a brace in Al-Nassr’s 3-0 win against Al Akhdoud on Saturday to take his tally for club and country to 956 goals. The goals ensured Ronaldo reached 40 goals for the calendar year for the third consecutive year and for the 14th time in his career.

He also holds the record for the most goals in international football with 141 in 223 games for Portugal.

Speaking after being named the Best Middle East Player at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on Sunday, Ronaldo said, “It’s hard to continue playing, but I am motivated.

“My passion is high, and I want to continue. It doesn’t matter where I play, whether in the Middle East or Europe. I always enjoy playing football, and I want to keep going.

“You know what my goal is. I want to win trophies, and I want to reach that number [1,000 goals] that you all know. I will reach the number for sure, if no injuries.”

The forward, who joined Al-Nassr in 2022, signed a new two-year deal with the Saudi Arabian club last July that takes him beyond his 42nd birthday.

Ronaldo has scored 13 goals in 14 appearances this season for Al-Nassr (scoring 12 in 10 Saudi Pro League games) so far this term to equal a personal record from his time at Juventus. His goal record has helped Al-Nassr this season, as they currently sit four points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League table.

Despite the forward’s record of 112 goals in 125 appearances, Al-Nassr have only won one piece of silverware – the Arab Club Champions Cup in 2023 – since his arrival.

Ronaldo holds the record for most goals for Portugal (143) and Real Madrid (450) and is the only player to have scored 100+ goals for four clubs – Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr.

Fish Out Attackers Of Women Protesters, Kwara Governor Tells Police

Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has directed the State Police Command to fish out the attackers of some protesting women near the gate of the Government House in Ilorin, the state capital.

A video that has gone viral showed suspected thugs manhandling some women said to be protesting insecurity in parts of the state.

However, Governor AbdulRazaq, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, condemned the assault on the protesters while restating his commitment to public safety.

“Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has expressed outrage at a footage showing some hoodlums attacking women protesters during the Christmas holiday near the under-construction Government House gate in Ilorin.

“The Governor said the assault on the protesters, whatever the circumstances, was unacceptable and should never have happened.

“Peaceful protest is a democratic right. The women are within their right to express their views.

“We, therefore, distance ourselves from the incident as it does not represent our values as a government. We call on the police to find the attackers and bring them to account,” Ajakaiye said.

The statement stressed that the government was clearly not standing aloof on security matters. “Just on Saturday, December 27, the Governor personally led the passing out parade of armed forest guards whose mandate includes flushing out kidnappers and terrorists from our forests.

“This is in addition to heavy deployment of security forces, among other investment, to secure our communities.”

Kwara abduction: Kidnappers demand N500m, families beg for govt intervention

Families of seven construction workers kidnapped in Kwara State have begged the state government to help secure their release.

The kidnapped victims were reportedly whisked away while carrying out construction work along the Sabaja–Owa Onire Road.

Making the appeal at a press conference in Ilorin, the state capital, the families revealed that the abductors are demanding a ransom of N500 million for the workers’ release.

The families, while describing the ordeal as deeply traumatic, stressed that the incident has left wives, children, and elderly parents in distress.

“We are appealing to the Kwara State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue our loved ones.

“We also solicit immediate support for the affected families while they await the safe return of the abducted workers,” the families said.
