Super Eagles Top Group C With Maximum Points Going into Round of 16 – THISDAYLIVE

* Tunisia scrap into the knockout phase with 1-1 draw with Tanzania

Duro Ikhazuagbe

Nigeria’s Super Eagles finished the group stage campaign of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with maximum nine points to top Group C.

Opening goal from Paul Onuachu in the 28th minute plus a brace from Raphael Onyedika in the 62nd and 67th minutes ensured that Nigeria repaid a 47-year-old debt to the Ugandans that defeated Green Eagles at the 1978 edition hosted by Ghana in Accra.

What even made the victory sweet for Nigeria was that it was achieved with a largely second IX and coach Eric Chelle rested the bulk of his starting line up.

Only Victor Osimhen and Calvin Bassey can be said to be amongst the first IX players in the squad to reduce the match to a training session for the East Africans who were looking for their first win to wrestle the second placed ticket from Tunisia who drew 1-1 with Tanzania in the second game of the Group C.

Nigeria dominated the first half and to Eagles’ credit, they showed ambitions to win this encounter even though they had already qualified for the knockout rounds of the tournament.

Moses Simon was lively on the left side of attack, while there were interesting duel between two big men – Calvin Bassey in the Nigerian defence and Uche Ikpeazu, whose father is Nigerian, in the attack of the Cranes of Uganda.

At the return from the first half break, Uganda’s experienced goalkeeper, Denis Onyango, who was injured in the first half, had to be substituted by second choice goalkeeper, Salim Magoola.

Magoola stayed barely 10 minutes on the pitch before getting a red card for stopping Victor Osimhen’s goal-bound ball with his hands outside his area.

Coach Paul Put then had to pull out a player to field Uganda’s third choice goalkeeper.

Three minutes later, Raphael Onyedika coolly collected Samuel Chukwueze’s lob to increase Nigeria’s tally to 2-0.

And in the 67th minuted, Onyedika scored his second and Eagles went up 3-0.

Rogers Mayo however pulled one back for Uganda in the 75th minute to give the Cranes a false sense of hope of a possible equaliser coming.

A flurry of changes of bringing in majorly defenders effectively sealed off Eagles backline, while the match dragged on with no more goals coming from either side.

RESULTS

Uganda 1-3 Nigeria

Tanzania 1-1 Tunisia

PROFILES: Anthony Joshua’s two friends, Sina and Latif, who died in Monday crash

Two of Anthony Joshua’s closest friends have been named as the individuals who died in a car crash, which left the two-time world heavyweight champion injured in Nigeria.

Joshua’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing, identified the victims as Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, both long-standing members of the boxer’s inner circle. The organisation confirmed the tragedy in an official statement.

The outpouring of tributes from across the boxing world — from rivals to champions — speaks to the profound respect and affection they commanded.

Sina and Latif, both long-time friends of Joshua, were killed after the Lexus SUV they were all travelling in smashed into a stationary truck shortly after 11:00 am on Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Makun.

Joshua was seated in the rear of the vehicle when the collision occurred.

Sina Ghami was Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach for more than a decade.

He also co-founded Evolve Gym in London.

According to the gym’s website, Ghami is a certified sports and exercise rehabilitator who specialises in musculoskeletal injuries and corrective exercise.

Ghami had worked with athletes across several sports, including the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and the Michigan State University football team.

He was a key presence in Joshua’s corner during several landmark bouts, most notably the historic 2017 victory over Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium — a defining moment in modern heavyweight boxing.

Latif Ayodele, widely known as Latz, was Joshua’s personal trainer.

Ayodele regularly posted photos with Joshua on his Instagram page and was seen with the boxer shortly before the accident.

While he officially served as Joshua’s personal trainer, Latz was also one of his closest friends.

According to The Mirror, he was deeply passionate about fitness and played a central role in Joshua’s day-to-day training routines.

Born Kevin Ayodele, he later converted to Islam and adopted the name Abdul Latif. Those who knew him described him as deeply committed to his faith and dedicated to inspiring others through discipline, training, and example.

With over 11,000 followers on Instagram, @Healthy_Mindset was not merely a username but a philosophy. Latz built a community by authentically promoting a lifestyle built on discipline, rigorous physical training, and mental resilience. He lived the creed he preached, becoming a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes and fitness enthusiasts worldwide.

Akanni Thumbs Up Eagles Win Vs Uganda

Mr Chef AFCON Match

Former Nigerian international Waidi Akanni has lauded the Super Eagles’ performance in their 3-1 win over Uganda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles took the lead in the 28th minute through Paul Onuachu before Raphael Onyedika netted two goals.

The Cranes did manage a consolation in the 75th minute when Rogers Mato, who made a fine diagonal run across the pitch, was found by Allan Okello and applied a chipped finish over the onrushing Francis Uzoho.

Reacting after the game, Akanni, who was a guest on Afrosports AFCON 2025 coverage, stated that he’s impressed with Nigeria’s performance against Uganda.

He also urged the team to maintain the winning form in the Round of 16.

“I think this match is good for the confidence of the players ahead of the round of 16. Winning the game will help boost the confidence of the team, and that is what the players have done.

“I pray they keep going into the round of 16, quarter finals, and semi-finals till the final stages. Basically, I don’t think those nine points matter when you play in the round of 16. Again, it all depends on our opponent in the round of 16.

“However, it’s a different occasion now that we have the likes of Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, and others in top shape, and we can see the way they played in their last two matches.”

AFCON 2025: Onyedika wins MOTM award in Super Eagles’ win over Uganda

Raphael Onyedika claimed the Man of the Match award following the Super Eagles’ 3–1 victory over the Cranes of Uganda.

Onyedika, who made his maiden AFCON appearance in the match, scored a brace for the Super Eagles. He also formed an effective partnership with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru in midfield.

The midfielder was in action for the full duration of the game.

Before the encounter, the 24-year-old had scored only once for the three-time African champions. That goal came in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in March 2024.

Onyedika has now made 19 appearances for the Super Eagles.

NFL bad boy Stefon Diggs in more hot water as cops charge him with assault and strangulation

NFL bad boy Stefon Diggs in more hot water as cops charge him with assault and strangulation

New England Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs is facing charges of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery after an alleged incident on December 2, court documents show.

The exact allegations remain unclear. Diggs’ attorney, Michael DiStefano, made a virtual appearance at Dedham District Court on Tuesday to argue that the details of the police report should remain impounded.

Whatever occurred, DiStefano say his client has made a financial offer to settle the dispute with the victim, who remains unidentified publicly.

As first reported by Boston 25, the 32-year-old NFL star is scheduled to be arraigned on January 23 – days before the AFC Championship is scheduled to be played. The Patriots have already clinched a playoff berth entering the final week of the NFL season thanks to Sunday’s blowout win over the rival New York Jets.

That victory gave the Patriots their first AFC East crown since 2019 as Diggs hauled in his 80th reception of the season to qualify for a $500,000 bonus. He signed a three-year, $63.5 million deal with the team before the season.

Digg has denied the allegations to the team, as Patriots spokespeople revealed in a statement provided to the Daily Mail.

‘The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs,’ the statement began. ‘Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations.

‘We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.’

His status for Sunday’s season finale against the visiting Miami Dolphins remains unchanged, but the Patriots have already clinched a playoff berth, so there is a chance he could be rested.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection has made a number of headlines in 2025.

The father of rapper Cardi B’s fourth child, Diggs was seen partying aboard a boat in a viral clip back in May, showing the former All-Pro handling a pink substance believed to be drugs. He would ultimately discuss the incident with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, who has agreed to keep the conversation private, but was never punished by the team or league.

Meanwhile, Diggs and reality TV star Mulan Hernandez are in a legal battle after he sued her for allegedly assaulting him and attempting to extort millions of dollars from him.

Hernandez (real name: Mia Jones) fired back earlier this year, alleging Diggs’ lawsuit was an attempt to get ahead of the truth. In a statement given to TMZ, she claimed Diggs assaulted her, leading to a concussion.

‘On June 7th [of 2024] I was assaulted from behind by Stefon Diggs at our residence an incident that resulted in a concussion,’ she said in February of 2025.

‘This is clearly an attempt to try an get ahead of the truth that is to come,’ she continued. ‘I WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED NOR SILENCED.’

He has also taken criticism from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) over his bespoke furniture and lifestyle brand, which uses real animal fur.

‘Is Stefon Diggs the only person alive who doesn’t understand that, whether they’re killed for clothing or a hideous piece of wall décor, the agony is the same for the terrified coyotes whose limbs are mangled in steel-jaw traps—especially the mothers who know their babies will starve to death without them?’ read a statement from the group.

‘These family-oriented Song Dogs can suffer for days before the hunter returns to shoot or bludgeon them to death and peel the skin from their bodies, so PETA urges Diggs to stick to football and use faux fur for his next arts-and-crafts project.’

NCAA sparks college basketball meltdown with statement on shock ruling that could change sports forever

NCAA sparks college basketball meltdown with statement on shock ruling that could change sports forever

College basketball has descended into chaos after the NCAA spoke out on its shock decision to grant eligibility to a former NBA Draft pick.

There are fears that the decision to allow James Nnaji, a 21-year-old Nigerian-born professional basketball player who never played in college, to join Baylor could change the sport forever.

The NCAA granted Nnaji four years of eligibility and he will be cleared to play for the remainder of the 2025-26 season – despite the Charlotte Hornets drafting him 31st overall in 2023.

Until now, basketball players were not allowed to return to college if they are part of the NBA draft. Traditionally, players have had until mid-June to withdraw their names if they want to stay in school.

Amid the furor, the NCAA has now muddied the waters further with a cryptic  statement about the future of NBA players in college basketball.

‘Schools are recruiting and seeking eligibility for more individuals with more international, semi-pro and professional experience than ever before and while the NCAA members have updated many rules following the House injunction, more rules must likely be updated to reflect the choices member schools are making,’ the NCAA told The Field of 68.

John Calipari goes OFF on the NCAA and eligibility 😳

“THE RULES BE THE RULES. If you put your name in the draft, I don’t care if you’re from RUSSIA, you can’t play college basketball! If your name was in that draft, and you got drafted, YOU CAN’T PLAY COLLEGE BASKETBALL!” pic.twitter.com/s6p8PoOJID

‘At the same time, NCAA eligibility rules have been invalidated by judges across the country wreaking havoc on the system and leading to fewer opportunities for high school students, which is why the Association is asking Congress to intervene in these challenges.’

The affair sparked a furious reaction from Arkansas’ Hall-of-Fame coach John Calipari, who warned the NCAA that they could face legal action.

In an impassioned statement on Monday night, he said: ‘The rules be the rules! So if you put your name in the draft – I don’t care if you’re from Russia – and you stay in the draft, you can’t play college basketball.’

He continued: ‘I don’t blame coaches – I have friends that are playing with 27-year-olds and they feel bad. I say: “Don’t feel bad, we don’t have any rules – why should you feel bad?”‘

Xavier head coach Richard Pitino, meanwhile, responded to the NCAA’s statement on social media. He wrote simply: ‘Yikes’

Nnaji never played in the NBA or in the G-League but he has been playing professional basketball since 2019. Nnaji also took part in NBA Summer League games this year.

Earlier this week, longtime Michigan State coach Tom Izzo savaged the authorities over the ruling.

‘I thought I’d seen the worst — then Christmas came,’ Izzo said, per USA Today. ‘Now we’re taking guys that were drafted in the NBA and everything… if that’s what we’re going to, shame on the NCAA. Shame on the coaches, too, but shame on the NCAA because coaches are gonna do what they gotta do, I guess.’

He added: ‘Those people on those committees that are making those decisions to allow something so ridiculous… I just don’t agree with it.’

Purdue coach Matt Painter, meanwhile, said: ‘We just want to know the rules so we can abide by them. We don’t know what’s going on.

‘We need some leadership, we need someone to step up and [break down] how it’s ran… give us the rules and we’ll abide by them. Because that’s who the rules are for, the rules aren’t for the people who cheat.’

He added: ‘This all goes down and there’s no communication. We just want to know. Tell us what to do… there’s a lot of gray area right now.’

Gonzaga coach Mark Few claimed ‘it’s wild out there right now,’ claiming: ‘We really don’t have any organizational or any real rules right now. So I think guys are just trying to do whatever they can and until there’s a rule that says you can’t do it, it’s hard to blame anybody for doing what they’re doing.’

He added: ‘A lack of leadership has really shown. Now it’s probably time to get some help from Congress but they’re more screwed up than the NCAA is!’

Tyson Fury Reacts To Anthony Joshua’s Accident, Hint On Return To Boxing

British heavyweight boxer, Tyson Fury has broken his silence following the serious road accident involving long-time rival Anthony Joshua in Nigeria, as the former heavyweight champion also dropped a fresh hint about a possible return to the ring.

Naija News reports that Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal crash on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Makun, where two key members of his team, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, lost their lives.

The SUV carrying them reportedly slammed into a stationary truck, triggering scenes of devastation that have since grabbed the attention of the boxing world.

The police confirmed that Joshua escaped with what were described as minor injuries.

However, sources close to the 36-year-old have raised concerns that the extent of his injuries could be more serious than initially made public, especially after footage from the scene showed him wincing as he was assisted away from the wreckage.

Reacting to the tragedy, Fury took to Instagram to write: “This is so sad. May God give them a good bed in heaven.”

The message came only minutes after the 37-year-old appeared to tease a return to boxing in 2026, despite previously insisting he had retired for good last January.

Fury posted a photograph of himself with his sons, Prince and Johnboy, all wearing shirts bearing the message: “I’m back. Fury. My legacy. Old School.”

Tyson FuryTyson Fury

The timing of Fury’s post has inevitably fuelled speculation around a long-awaited showdown between him and Joshua.

A clash between the two dominant British heavyweights of the past decade had been widely discussed for 2026, particularly after Joshua’s recent comeback victory over Jake Paul. Those plans, however, now appear uncertain in light of the accident.

Joshua’s promoters, Matchroom Boxing, confirmed the deaths of Ayodele and Ghami in an emotional statement released on Monday night.

“It is with the deepest and most profound sadness that we confirm, following a road traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria earlier today, the death of Sina Ghami and Kevin ‘Lateef’ Ayodele,” the statement read.

“Both were close friends and integral members of Anthony’s team.

“We respectfully ask that space and privacy be given to the families at this time while they process this truly shocking and devastating news.”

Earlier, officials in Nigeria confirmed that Joshua was awake and able to speak with his family after receiving medical attention. A spokesperson for the Ogun State Government said Joshua and another passenger were swiftly transferred to a specialist medical facility in Lagos.

“Following comprehensive clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time,” the spokesperson said.

“Anthony Joshua is conscious and has been in communication with his family. A full medical team will continue to monitor them closely.

“The Governments of Ogun and Lagos States are closely monitoring the situation, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have commenced. We kindly request privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family at this time.”

AFCON 2025: Rohr Upbeat Benin Can Upset Senegal

Mr Chef AFCON Match

Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr is upbeat the Cheetahs can get a positive result against Senegal, reports Completesports.com.

Rohr’s charges will be up against the Terangha Lions in a Group D clash at the Grand Stade de Tanger on Tuesday night (today).

The Cheetahs lost 1-0 to the Leopards of Democratic Republic of Congo in their first game.

They however revived their campaign securing a historic first AFCON victory in open play against Botswana to place qualification firmly within reach.

A win would see Benin advance automatically, while a draw could also prove sufficient depending on results elsewhere.

Rohr said it is important for his team to be resolute at the back.

“The priority is to be well organised defensively against top-level attackers,” Rohr was quoted by CAFonline.

“But we don’t want to just defend. We want to be united, combative and take our chances — especially from counter-attacks or set pieces.”
