I won’t defect with Obi, I remain in Labour Party — Gov Otti vows

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State says he will not defect from the Labour Party despite plans by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to leave the platform.

Otti made this declaration on Tuesday during his monthly media briefing in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, saying he had decided to remain in the Labour Party to help rebuild and reposition it.

He revealed that Obi had personally informed him of his intention to exit the party and that he had no objection to the decision, but emphasised that his own political path would be different.

“If you remember, I joined the Labour Party before Peter Obi, so I did not join the party with him. He has communicated to me that he is leaving the Labour Party. I gave him my blessings. But I will remain in the Labour Party, and I told him that I would continue the struggle to rescue the Labour Party,” Otti disclosed.

The governor also described the Labour Party as the platform that brought him to office, noting that his loyalty remained with the party for now.

“That is the party that brought me to power. If we fight and get to the end, and we are able to reposition the Labour Party, then we can discuss other options. Therefore, for now, I am not defecting to any party,” he added.

He equally reacted to recent calls by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, urging him to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Otti said he was not interested in being drawn into political distractions.

Otti acknowledged Kalu’s recent distribution of financial support to vulnerable people in the state, saying it aligned with his own appeal for assistance to the less privileged during the Christmas period.

“There’s no way anyone should even be speeding like that without any intervention by any of our agencies on the road. There should be penalties for exceeding the speed limit. The road safety guys should be all over—especially during this time. We need those cameras everywhere. And most importantly, our rescue team should be on alert. Group raises the alarm over alleged plot to remove Akpabio as Senate President

A group, National Grassroots Movement (NGM), has raised the alarm over the alleged plot to remove Godswill Akpabio as  Senate President.

The plot, according to the NGM, was a calculated move to destabilise the National Assembly and undermine President Bola Tinubu ‘s administration ahead of the 2027 election.

In a statement by the Hon. Tunde Felix, National Coordinator and Alhaji Musa Mustapha, National Publicity Secretary, the group fingered a prominent senator from the South south as the mastermind of the plot.

According to the NGM, the South south senator intends to take over as Senate President, alleging his desperation to cause confusion in the National Assembly.

The statement reads in parts: “The National Grassroots Movement raises the alarm over credible political maneuvers pointing to a well-coordinated scheme by a bloc of Northern senators to remove the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for selfish and destabilizing purposes.

‘This scheme is not motivated by principle, reform, or legislative conscience, but by desperation—a calculated power grab fueled by wounded pride and the pursuit of political relevance, aimed at installing a prominent Senator from the Southsouth as Senate President through orchestrated alliances and sectional maneuvering.

“The National Grassroots Movement views this as a dangerous escalation by the Senator, who has lost political confidence within the Presidency and is now seeking relevance by turning the National Assembly into a theatre of distraction—intended to slow, frustrate, and weaken the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“Senator Godswill Akpabio has provided steady and nationally balanced leadership to the 10th National Assembly, refusing to turn the Senate into an opposition arena. His collaborative approach with the Executive has been crucial in stabilizing governance at a time when Nigeria requires discipline, unity, and decisive action”.

The statement further reads: “While leadership changes in the National Assembly are constitutionally permissible, deliberately engineering such changes through premeditated alliances, sectional calculations, or personal vendettas—rather than genuine national interest and broad consensus—raises serious concerns about motive and its impact on legislative stability.

“The National Grassroots Movement condemns any attempt to weaponize ethnicity, region, or numerical strength to seize Senate leadership. The National Assembly must not become a battleground for personal scores or fading political influence.

“The Movement therefore warns, unequivocally, that Nigerians are watching. Party members are alert. Any effort to create crisis for narrow ambition will be resisted politically, exposed publicly, and rejected morally.

“The Senator must be reminded that the APC is not a vehicle for personal vendettas, nor is the National Assembly a tool to destabilize a government elected by Nigerians. Loyalty to the party, respect for institutions, and commitment to national stability must take precedence over personal ambition.

“The National Grassroots Movement calls on all party members, patriotic Nigerians, and democratic stakeholders to remain vigilant, reject manipulation, and defend institutional integrity. Sectional ambition must not override national interest, and anyone attempting to sabotage the Tinubu administration or destabilize the Senate will be held accountable

‘The National Grassroots Movement stands resolutely with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, and the Tinubu administration, and will mobilize politically and intellectually to defend legislative stability, party unity, and democratic order”.

CBN projects inflation to ease to 12.94% in 2026, sees bullish capital market outlook

CBN projects inflation to ease to 12.94% in 2026, sees bullish capital market outlook

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has projected that headline inflation will moderate to an average of 12.94% in 2026, driven by easing food prices and a decline in the cost of premium motor spirit (PMS).

The projection is contained in the apex bank’s 2026 Macroeconomic Outlook for Nigeria.

According to the CBN, improved domestic supply conditions and stabilising energy prices are expected to reduce cost pressures on households and businesses, supporting overall price stability.

What the CBN is saying

In the outlook report, the CBN said inflationary pressures are expected to ease in 2026 as food and energy prices decline.

“Headline inflation is projected to moderate to an estimated average of 12.94 per cent in 2026, driven by declining food and premium motor spirit (PMS) prices,” the apex bank said.

The CBN also projected a bullish capital market outlook for 2026, supported by ongoing bank recapitalisation, rising investor confidence, and policy measures aimed at fostering economic growth.

The apex bank identified several factors expected to influence growth in monetary aggregates in 2026, including exchange rate movements, fiscal operations, election-related spending, and the continued implementation of prudential and regulatory measures.

According to the CBN, these variables will shape liquidity conditions and credit expansion in the economy, particularly as political activities ahead of elections increase government spending and financial flows.

The outlook builds on recent policy tightening and structural reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability after a prolonged period of elevated inflation and currency volatility.

What this means

If realised, the projected moderation in inflation would mark a significant improvement in Nigeria’s price environment, potentially easing pressure on consumers and improving business planning.

A bullish capital market outlook also suggests stronger investor participation, particularly as bank recapitalisation and policy reforms deepen market confidence.

The CBN said it remains committed to deploying appropriate policy tools to sustain macroeconomic stability, support economic growth, and strengthen the financial system amid domestic and global economic uncertainties.

What you should know

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate moderated to 14.45 per cent in November 2025, marking a significant slowdown from the 16.05 per cent recorded in October 2025.

The decline of 1.6 percentage points month-on-month signals easing price pressures across the economy after several months of elevated inflation, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

In December 2024, President Bola Tinubu declared the Federal Government’s commitment to reducing Nigeria’s inflation rate from 34.6% to 15% by the end of 2025.

NGO Urges Govts, Individuals to Collaborate against Violent Extremism – THISDAYLIVE

Onuminya Innocent in Sokoto

A non-governmental  organisation (NGO), The PAVE Network, has urged government at all levels and individuals to collaborate in combating violent extremism.

The organisation said it has made significant strides in preventing and countering violent extremism (PCVE) in the North-west region,

At  a press conference yesterday, the organisation highlighted  key achie-vements such as multi-stakeholder workshops, peer learning exchanges, and community resilience campaigns focusing on peace education and tolerance messaging.

The organisation further explained that these efforts have enhanced collaboration among government agencies, security forces, and civil society, which led to the drafting of State Action Plans (SAPs) and Local Action Plans (LAPs) to address the complex security challenges in the region.

The Sokoto State Chair of The PAVE Network, Dr Ahmad Surajo Muhammad emphasized, that despite progress, challenges still persist.

He said the challenges include: the presence of armed groups such as Lakurawa , youth unemployment, and weak intelligence linkages, which fuel vulnerability to extremist narratives.

He further stated that to address these issues, The PAVE Network is calling on residents to stay vigilant and reject extremist ideologies, traditional leaders to amplify messages of peace and tolerance, and government agencies to integrate PCVE priorities into planning and budgeting.

He urged security agencies to deepen engagement with communities and respect human rights in all operations, emphasising that security operations alone cannot end violent extremism.

“This is a shared governance, development, and community resilience challenge,” he said.

He said the NGO is committed  to a collaborative, inclusive and evidence-based approach to PCVE, emphasising that peace and resilience are responsibilities of every member of society.

He said the network’s efforts have already recorded notable gains, including the setup of Technical Working Groups for SAPs and LAPs, introduction of PCVE into state budget proposals, and participation of critical stakeholders, including the private sector.

Fire razes 10 shops at Oshodi’s Arena market

A fire outbreak on Tuesday evening gutted a section of the popular Arena Market in Bolade, Oshodi, Lagos State and destroyed about 10 shops.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Controller General, Mrs Margaret Adeseye.

According to the statement, the Service received a distress call at about 5:50 p.m. reporting a fire outbreak at the market, prompting the immediate deployment of firefighting units.

The responders arrived at the scene within five minutes, at approximately 5:55 p.m.

Adeseye said the fire affected a section of the market comprising five 40-foot container shops arranged in two rows, bringing the total number of affected shops to 10.

She explained that the shops were mainly used for the storage and sale of clothing materials, which were stocked in bales. She added that the swift intervention of firefighters ensured the blaze was contained and prevented from spreading to other parts of the market.

“The situation is firmly under control, and there is no risk of the fire spreading to other parts of the market,” the statement said.

Adeseye assured members of the public that all necessary measures had been taken to protect lives and property, adding that an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the fire, with further updates to be provided as required.

Nigeria records overall .60 bn balance of payments surplus in Q3 2025 – CBN

Nigeria recorded an overall Balance of Payments (BOP) surplus of $4.60 billion in the third quarter of 2025, marking a turnaround from the deficit position in the preceding quarter.

This is according to data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The apex bank said that the improvement was supported by a sustained current account surplus of 3.42 billion dollars, supported by stronger trade performance, resilient remittance inflows, increased financial flows, and continued accretion to external reserves.

The CBN reported that the goods account remained in surplus at 4.94 billion dollars, reflecting higher export earnings during the period.

“Crude oil exports rose to 8.45 billion dollars, while exports of refined petroleum products increased by 44 per cent to $2.29 billion.

“This indicates further progress in domestic refining capacity and Nigeria’s gradual transition from a net importer to a net exporter of refined petroleum products.

“Total goods exports stood at 15.24 billion dollars, while imports of refined petroleum products declined by 12.7 per cent, resulting in an improved trade balance.

“Workers’ remittances also remained strong, with the secondary income account recording a surplus of 5.50 billion dollars, including $5.24 billion in remittance inflows from Nigerians in the diaspora,” it said.

The apex bank said that developments in the financial account further supported the overall BOP outcome, with Nigeria posting a net lending position of $0.32 billion.

It said that foreign direct investment inflows rose to $0.72 billion, while portfolio investment inflows remained robust at $2.51 billion, reflecting improved investor sentiment and continued non-resident participation in domestic financial instruments.

“The country’s external reserves increased to $42.77 billion at the end of September 2025, up from $37.81 billion at the end of June, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s external buffers,” it said.

According to the CBN, the Q3 2025 BOP outcome underscores strengthening external sector fundamentals and firmer investor confidence.

“It also underscores the continued impact of reforms in the foreign exchange market, monetary policy implementation, and the domestic energy sector,” it said. (NAN)

Mutfwang Okays Scholarship For 200 Undergraduate Plateau Students In India

Plateau State Governor, Barr Caleb Mutfwang has approved the sponsorship of 200 students for undergraduate degree programmes in Medical Sciences, Engineering, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at Sanskaram University, India.

Presiding over the farewell ceremony for the beneficiaries, the Governor described the initiative as a strategic, merit-driven investment in human capital development aimed at securing the future of Plateau State through education, discipline, and global exposure.

He emphasised that the beneficiaries, drawn from across the three senatorial zones of the state, emerged through a transparent, competitive, and strictly merit-based selection process.

“This process was not manipulated or influenced in any way. Everyone selected is here because of hard work and excellence. If they did not earn it by merit, nobody would be discussing them,” he stated.

The governor added that the selection was independently supervised by the partner university to ensure credibility.

Mutfwang further clarified that the programme was deliberately insulated from political, institutional, or quota considerations.

“We did not allocate slots to politicians, local governments, or institutions. We insisted that this first batch must be purely merit-based because Plateau State has produced some of the brightest minds in this country, and we believe God has blessed us with excellence,” he said.

While addressing the departing students, Mutfwang charged them to uphold discipline, moral integrity, and academic excellence as worthy ambassadors of Plateau State and Nigeria.

“What God is giving you through us are wings to fly. Wheqn the hour of temptation comes, remember where you are coming from. Devote yourselves to excellence, because the future of Plateau State and Nigeria will depend on you,” he admonished.

He also unveiled broader reforms in the education sector, disclosing that the 2026 budget provides for a special research fund for Plateau indigene in tertiary institutions, expanded postgraduate programmes at Plateau State University, and enhanced support for Master’s and PhD research.

“This is just the beginning. We are deliberately investing in our institutions so they can compete favourably at national and global levels,” he said, reiterating his administration’s resolve to build “a new Plateau where no one is left behind and where religion or ethnicity will not hold us back.”

In her remarks, the Commissioner of Education, Dr Kachollom Pyam Gang, described the scheme as a historic milestone in Plateau State’s educational advancement, noting that it was unprecedented for a sitting governor to sponsor as many as 200 students for overseas studies at once.

Gang commended Governor Mutfwang’s vision and personal sacrifice, affirming that the beneficiaries’ admission into Sanskaram University was earned through discipline and academic excellence.

“Excellence is not a destination; it is a habit. Return with knowledge, with stories, and with the fire to build a healthier and more prosperous Plateau State,” she charged.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Scholarship Board, Nankus Adams Ngwalang, applauded Governor Mutfwang for the novel initiative, describing it as the most impactful intervention the board has experienced.

Ngwalang noted that the administration has increased bursary allowances for students, sponsored scholarship programmes to Liberty University, and granted the board the autonomy to operate in the interest of peace and progress in the state.

Speaking on behalf of parents, Mr. Fabong Adanchin expressed profound gratitude to the Governor, describing the initiative as transformative.

“I did not support you in the last election, but good leadership won me over. Today, my son is going to India purely on merit. This seed you have sown will outlive us, because the child of a widow, a poor man, and an orphan can now access quality education,” he said.

The event, which drew government officials, parents, traditional rulers, and religious leaders, underscored the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, as beneficiaries comprised both Christians and Muslims. Traditional leaders urged the students to return with value and impact.

“You are going to India not just for yourselves, but for Plateau State. Bring back knowledge and excellence. Promote our oneness and make us proud,” they charged, while offering prayers for their success and safe return.

Police arrest 22-year-old for alleged rape in Ibadan

A fraudster handcuffed by Police

The Police Command in Oyo State says it has arrested a 22-year-old suspect for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl after intoxicating her with a substance.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement to newsmen on Tuesday in Ibadan.

Olayinka said that the Alakia Adelubi Police Division received a report of sexual assault on a 17-year-old female on Thursday and immediately began investigations.

“The victim was promptly taken to a hospital for medical examination, while the scene of the incident was visited, and the suspect was arrested and taken into custody,” he said.

He said that preliminary investigations revealed that the 22-year-old male suspect allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor after administering an intoxicating drink to her.

The PRO said that the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Femi Haruna, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation.

He said that the Commissioner of Police has warned that the Command will not tolerate any violent acts against women or offences targeted at women or any member of society.

Olayinka reassured members of the public that the Command remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all citizens in the state.

Insecurity: Group demands Amotekun overhaul, cites leadership failure

A civil society group, The Osun Masterminds, TOM, has criticised the operations of the Osun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, citing alleged misconduct and leadership failure.

The group made its position known in a statement delivered by its Executive Director, Prof Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli during its December 2025 State of the State address on Tuesday in Osogbo.

According to the group, the corps has failed to meet public expectations following reported cases of murder, extortion and high-handedness by some of its operatives.

Referencing the killing of some residents in Akinlalu community in September, Prof Oyedokun-Alli described the incident as unfortunate and troubling.

The group alleged that “the current leadership of the corps, headed by retired Assistant Superintendent of Police Omoyele, had fallen short of acceptable standards.”

It compared the performance of the Osun Amotekun unfavourably with those of Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti and Lagos states, where it said the corps had recorded notable successes.

The Osun Masterminds recalled what it described as the lofty strides of the corps under former leaders, Comrade Shittu Amitolu and Brigadier General Adewinnmbi.

The group called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to urgently reorganise the Amotekun Corps in the interest of public safety.

“We are calling for a total overhauling of the headship of Amotekun in Osun State. We need a total overhaul,” Oyedokun-Alli said.

He added that the group was raising the alarm to prevent the spread of terrorism and banditry into the state from neighbouring areas.

“Let it be on record that we are warning again in order to curtail insecurity in Osun State before it gets to that point,” he said.

The group also acknowledged a reduction in security challenges during the recent Yuletide season, commending the Federal Government’s efforts.

However, it cautioned against what it described as potential threats to Nigeria’s territorial integrity, urging the government to remain vigilant in matters of national security.

Orji Kalu’s Family Supports 9,500 Abia Families

A Baptist Church cleric, Rev. Samson Okoro Elekwa, has commended the family of the former Governor of Abia State,  Orji Uzor Kalu, for what he described as an outstanding act of compassion and service to humanity during the Christmas season.

Rev. Elekwa disclosed that the Kalu family, working alongside the senator’s brothers, Chief Nnanna, and Mascot Uzor Kalu, reached out to over 9,500 families across the 17 Local Government Areas of the State, gifting each beneficiary a cash support of N25,000 as part of the 2025 Christmas celebration.

He said the gesture was not surprising to many residents of the state, noting that the scale of the intervention prompted him to personally verify the information.

According to him, upon hearing the report, he contacted the Chairman of the Abia State chapter of the OUK Movement, Hon. Sunday Ojisi (Abacha), who confirmed the distribution.

Describing the initiative as a rare demonstration of genuine love, Rev. Elekwa said the Kalu family’s action aligns with the core teachings of Christianity.

“This is the spirit of love. Christ preached love while on earth, and this family has clearly shown that love in practical terms,” he said.

The cleric further stated that Senator Kalu and his brothers have continued to exemplify generosity and empathy, particularly at a time when many families are grappling with economic hardship.

He urged other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the gesture by supporting the less privileged within their communities.

Beyond the Christmas outreach, Senator Kalu has been widely acknowledged for his long-standing philanthropic interventions across Abia North and other parts of the state.

Over the years, he has supported education through scholarships, classroom construction, and the donation of learning materials to schools.

The lawmaker has also played a visible role in healthcare delivery, facilitating medical outreaches, hospital equipment donations, and assistance to patients requiring urgent medical care.

These efforts, observers note, have complemented government initiatives in underserved rural areas.

In addition, Senator Kalu has been credited with various empowerment programmes aimed at youths and women, including skills acquisition, financial support for small businesses, and community infrastructure projects such as road rehabilitation and water schemes.

Rev. Elekwa prayed for God’s continued guidance and strength for the Kalu family, stressing that acts of kindness and selfless service remain the true measure of leadership. He said such gestures not only bring relief to the people but also promote unity, peace, and shared responsibility within society.
