President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that 2026 marks the beginning of a more robust phase of economic growth for Nigeria, citing gains recorded in 2025 from ongoing fiscal, monetary, and structural reforms.

In his New Year message made available to Naija News, the President said the country closed 2025 on a strong economic footing despite global headwinds, noting that the difficult reforms undertaken by his administration are beginning to deliver measurable results for the economy and ordinary citizens.

Economic Gains and 2026 Outlook

Tinubu said Nigeria recorded consistent GDP growth in every quarter of 2025, with annualised growth projected to exceed four per cent. According to him, the country also maintained trade surpluses, achieved improved exchange rate stability, and saw inflation decline steadily to below 15 per cent, in line with government targets.

He added that the Nigerian Stock Exchange outperformed many global peers in 2025, posting a 48.12 per cent gain and extending the bullish trend that began in the second half of 2023.

The President said Nigeria’s foreign reserves stood at $45.4bn as of December 29, 2025, providing a strong buffer for the naira against external shocks, with expectations of further improvement in 2026.

On investment, Tinubu disclosed that foreign direct investment rose sharply to $720m in the third quarter of 2025 from $90m in the previous quarter, attributing the increase to renewed investor confidence. He noted that global credit rating agencies, including Moody’s, Fitch, and Standard & Poor’s, have continued to affirm Nigeria’s economic direction.

Fiscal Discipline and Tax Reforms

The President referenced the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly, stressing that fiscal discipline remains central to achieving long-term stability and growth.

He said moderating inflation and interest rates would create more fiscal space for investments in infrastructure and human capital. Tinubu also addressed multiple taxation, commending states that have adopted harmonised tax laws aligned with the national tax reform agenda to reduce the burden of levies and fees on citizens and businesses.

According to him, 2026 will be a critical year for implementing tax reforms to build a fair, competitive, and sustainable revenue system capable of funding infrastructure and social development.

Security and National Stability

Tinubu acknowledged ongoing security challenges, noting that economic progress must go hand in hand with peace and stability.

He said Nigerian security forces, working with international partners including the United States, carried out decisive operations against terrorist targets in parts of the Northwest on December 24, with sustained military actions continuing across the Northwest and Northeast.

The President said security and intelligence agencies would deepen cooperation with regional and global partners in 2026, reaffirming his support for decentralised policing and the deployment of properly regulated forest guards to tackle terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities.

Inclusive Growth and Social Development

Tinubu said the government would accelerate the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme in 2026, with a target of empowering at least 1,000 people in each of Nigeria’s 8,809 wards, bringing about 10 million citizens into productive economic activity.

He added that agriculture, trade, food processing, and mining would be prioritised to stimulate local economies, while investments would continue in roads, power, ports, railways, airports, pipelines, healthcare, education, and agriculture. He assured that all ongoing infrastructure projects would continue without disruption.

Call for Unity

The President urged Nigerians to embrace unity, patriotism, and shared responsibility in nation-building, stressing that collective effort is required to achieve the government’s goals in 2026.

He wished Nigerians a peaceful, productive, and prosperous New Year, praying for continued peace, security, and protection for the country and its armed forces.

A Migili-speaking residential area of Ashige in the Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State was thrown into chaos on Tuesday night after unknown gunmen invaded Akunza community during a traditional wedding ceremony.

Naija News learnt that the attack reportedly occurred while the wedding festivities were ongoing, leaving residents in panic and mourners fleeing for safety.

A youth leader from the community, who confirmed the incident to Daily Post, said at least three people were killed in the attack, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

He disclosed that women and children were among those injured and are currently receiving medical treatment at a health facility.

As of the time of filing this report, details of the motive behind the assault remain unclear.

In other news, several persons have reportedly been abducted by suspected gunmen along the Omi-Odo Ara Road in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to SaharaReporters, sources confirmed that the incident occurred on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, but the exact number of victims and their identities had yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

Residents said security agencies had been alerted following the incident, while people living in surrounding communities were advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary movement and promptly report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities.

Naija News reports that the fresh incident came barely a day after tension was reported in the Odo-Ere community in the same local government area following a coordinated attack by terrorists on Sunday night.

During the raid, at least four residents were reportedly abducted by the assailants. Those kidnapped were identified as Engr. Shina Ajere, Mr Kehinde Afolabi, Damilola Ogun, and a woman popularly known in the community as Iya Lara.

The Chairman of  Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area (LCDA),  Daniel Odunayo, has promised more people-centered projects as he marks 100 days in Office.

Odunayo, who inaugurated seven roads, also  donated three buses to the Council  Legislators, Office of the Chairman and National Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE), “to boost economy and improve accessibility”.

He added that the council would embark on construction of additional primary schools, markets, housing units, sporting facilities, expand local markets and inaugurate a 45-member task force to enforce cleanliness in  the council.

He said his administration has impacted the education sector with the distribution  of GCE forms and learning materials to pupils and also embarked on   youth empowerment and skills acquisition.

“Today, we open seven strategic roads, one in each ward, to boost our economy and improve accessibility. This is just the beginning of our infrastructure revolution. We also believe in investing in our future – our children. That’s why we’re distributing free exercise books and school bags to our students. Education is key, and we’re committed to supporting our young minds,” he said.

Lagos State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, while commending the council boss for policies aimed at improving residents welfare, said plans were on the way to deepen public accountability through engagements where achievements will be showcased and residents would question elected officials, followed by an independent performance assessment of council chairmen by a designated committee.

He added that the local government autonomy in addition to the tax reform starting in January would increase council’s revenue and enable them to embark on more developmental project.

Ojelabi  urged council officials to improve their  performance, warning that underperformance would be reported to the Local Government Commission for necessary actions.

Birnin Kebbi: A section of a private rice mill in Birnin Kebbi metropolis collapsed on Tuesday, leaving one staff dead and five others trapped under the metal wreckage.

Upon receiving the report, Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, visited the site and ordered immediate rescue efforts, which are ongoing.

The state government expressed deep sympathy to the management and staff of NIA-AGRI following the partial collapse of the facility. During the on-the-spot assessment, the Project Engineer confirmed at least one fatality, while five others remained trapped under the rubble.

A combined team of the State Fire Service and emergency response workers is actively engaged in locating and rescuing the victims.

The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, and the Deputy Governor stated that a full investigation would be launched once the rescue operations are concluded.

The government has pledged continued support for the rescue efforts until all affected individuals are accounted for. As of the time of this report, the fate of the five trapped workers remains unknown.

December 31 marks not only the eve of a new year, but also the birthday of Dr Dakuku Adolphus Peterside—known as DAP—a public figure whose blend of political instinct and administrative discipline symbolizes leadership in Nigeria: grounded in service, shaped by learning, and focused on results.

At 55, Peterside’s path spans professions and institutions, beginning on December 31, 1970, in Biriye, Opobo Kingdom, in Rivers State—an area marked by both oil wealth and vulnerability. Growing up there posed early questions: What does development mean if the basics are missing? Who is responsible when plenty brings little dignity? Why does potential often end in disappointment?

Those who knew young Peterside recall resolve and curiosity that sought answers beyond the simple. Moving across different Nigerian cities broadened his view. He learned to see the country as a shared project, reinforcing his conviction that national renewal requires both local loyalty and national imagination.

Education shaped Peterside. He finished secondary school at Okrika Grammar School in 1986/87 and studied Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Science and Technology (now Rivers State University), specializing in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. This background built precision, process, and an intolerance for sloppy conclusions—habits that persisted into public life.

He returned to Rivers State University to pursue a Master’s degree in Management and later enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Port Harcourt. Along the way, he broadened his exposure through leadership programmes at institutions including the Harvard Kennedy School, the Kellogg School of Management, the Stanford Graduate School of Business, the Stellenbosch Business School, and the Wharton School. In an era when many treat education as a credential rather than a craft, Peterside’s relationship with learning appears different: learning as a tool for clarity, and as a discipline of responsibility—an insistence that leadership should be prepared for, not improvised.

But education alone does not build or reform; it is practice that tests principles—revealed when challenges arise, and power tempts.

Peterside entered the political spotlight between 2002 and 2003 as Chairman of the Opobo–Nkoro Local Government Area during the tenure of Dr Peter Odili as Governor of Rivers State, during which he was recognized for implementing initiatives that improved local administration. Later, between 2005 and 2007, he served as Senior Special Assistant on Works to the Governor, contributing to major state infrastructure projects. From 2007 to 2011, he was Commissioner of Works under Governor Rotimi Amaechi—a role that placed him at the intersection where policy meets potholes and demanded practical delivery. In this capacity, he supervised significant road construction efforts and modernized public works processes. In a country where infrastructure is both a technical challenge and a political metaphor, the Ministry of Works is not merely an office; it is a classroom in which leadership learns either the discipline of systems or the habits of excuses.

From 2011 to 2015, he represented Andoni–Opobo/Nkoro Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives. Observers say he distinguished himself with uncommon insight and courage, sponsoring key motions on revenue allocation and transparency. This period sharpened his profile beyond local politics. His interventions on national questions—especially around revenue, governance, and development—cast him as a politician who spoke from the Niger Delta but refused to be imprisoned by regional sentiment. He carried his constituency with pride, yet framed its struggles within Nigeria’s broader crisis of institutional trust and performance. It is one thing to demand justice for your people; it is another to insist, publicly and consistently, that justice must be built into the architecture of the nation, not negotiated only when passions rise.

It was perhaps unsurprising, then, that in 2016 he was appointed Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), a position he held until 2020. During his tenure, Peterside initiated reforms that streamlined agency operations and enhanced maritime safety standards. Maritime administration is a demanding arena: technically complex, economically strategic, and crowded with competing interests. In such a space, leadership cannot survive on charm alone. It requires systems thinking, stakeholder discipline, and the steady temperament that can absorb pressure without losing direction—qualities that separate reform from performance and seriousness from showmanship.

Commenting on his roles, Dr Eretimi Tonu called Peterside “one of Nigeria’s foremost public intellectuals and political thought leaders,” highlighting his belief that leadership, rooted in responsibility, can redefine Nigeria. Supporters say Peterside sees public office as a trust to be earned.

Engr. Ahmed Ganu argues Peterside’s ideas have enriched public debate and inspired leaders. Ganu notes Peterside remains alert to ordinary Nigerians, advocating for accountable, development-focused governance.

Yet perhaps the most compelling dimension of this portrait is that it does not rely only on offices held. It leans equally on the life of the mind. Peterside has remained, by temperament and habit, a thinker and a writer—one who believes that Nigeria’s troubles are not only political but also intellectual; that a nation fails repeatedly when it stops interrogating itself honestly. A close observer describes his most recent book, Beneath the Surface, as a powerful collection of essays on Nigeria’s political life—candid in diagnosis, solution-oriented in tone—reinforcing his reputation as a voice that seeks to improve the country not by accident but by design.

His commitment goes beyond writing: Peterside mentors younger Nigerians, advises leaders, and coaches executives—quiet acts that help build continuity and national renewal.

At home, Dr Peterside is married to Elima Dakuku, a lawyer, and they have three children. His private life is where values are practiced daily, not in front of microphones but through routine responsibility.

As December 31 returns, the date prompts reflection on what a life represents. DAP’s story shows a leader who believes institutions can work, insists on accountability, and sees transformation as a sustained effort.

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, has accused the Federal Government of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to “persecute” him and members of his cabinet for refusing to join the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Mohammed made the allegation, yesterday, while receiving an ambassadorial award for safety from the Institute of Safety Professionals in Nigeria.

Recall that on Tuesday, the EFCC arraigned Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, over alleged N5.79 billion money laundering.

Adamu is accused of conspiring with Managing Director of I.S. Makayye Investment Resources Limited, Ishaku Mohammed Aliyu, and one Muntaka Duguri, both currently at large, to launder N4.65 billion between June and December 2023.

But Governor Mohammed expressed sadness that despite constitutional immunity, he is being named in the EFCC motion, which targets members of his cabinet.

“As a governor, someone who is the head of the opposition, my commissioner has been kept and will not be released by the EFCC,” he said.

“Even when I have immunity as a governor, my name was stupendously mentioned in a motion in a court of law in Nigeria: me, Bala Mohammed.

“I woke up to a notification where I was told I am being accused of terrorism. I don’t have to say anything. I don’t even have to go to the public court. But certainly, politics has become something in Nigeria.

“The APC-led federal government thinks they can use the courts and institutions of government, like the EFCC, to persecute and prosecute Nigerians who are not within their own party.”

Mohammed, who chairs the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, said he would not bow to pressure allegedly being mounted on him through the prosecution of members of his administration to join the ruling party.

The governor said he had remained silent in the interest of peace and security but warned that he would no longer stay quiet if the federal government continued its actions.

“If they don’t stop, we are going to declare war. I assure you, we are not going to keep quiet any longer. I won’t allow anybody to criminalise me because I’m not in their party, and I refuse to join their party, and I will not join their party,” he said.

The Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has expressed optimism that 2026 will mark a period of renewed hope, institutional stability and steady national progress for Nigeria.

“As we enter the year 2026, I extend my warm wishes to Nigerians for a peaceful and fulfilling year. I commend the resilience, patience, and civic maturity of our people, even in challenging times,” the Senate President said.

Akpabio noted that while the Executive arm of government continues to implement policies, the National Assembly remains firmly committed to its constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking, representation and oversight to ensure governance outcomes align with the aspirations of citizens.

According to him, the Senate will continue to provide legislative support where necessary, exercise oversight where required, and act in the best interest of national unity, economic stability and social justice.

He expressed cautious optimism that ongoing efforts to address insecurity, economic pressures, infrastructure deficits and youth unemployment would deliver more tangible results in the coming year, stressing that sustainable development depends on strong institutions rather than individual personalities.

“Our democracy is strengthened when institutions function properly and leaders remain accountable. The National Assembly will continue to work to strengthen these institutions and to ensure that public policy is people-centred and forward-looking,” Akpabio stated.

Looking ahead to heightened political activities as the country moves toward the 2027 general elections, the Senate President cautioned against divisive politics and what he described as false messianic narratives that could undermine national cohesion.

He warned that individuals who portray themselves as sole saviours often deepen divisions rather than resolve them, noting that democracy thrives on ideas, responsibility, accountability and respect for national unity.

Akpabio urged political actors to conduct themselves with restraint and a sense of national duty, assuring that the Senate would continue to uphold democratic norms, parliamentary discipline and the rule of law.

He also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to constructive engagement with the Executive, the Judiciary and other stakeholders to build a more united, just and prosperous Nigeria.

The Senate President concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain hopeful, vigilant and actively engaged in democratic processes, while wishing citizens a peaceful and prosperous 2026.

…says no leader can move country forward by copying, pasting models elsewhere

The Presidency has said that only a madman would be comfortable handing over power to the former Anambra state governor and the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Presidential election, Peter Obi.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said this on Wednesday while responding to Obi’s comments in Enugu, where he officially dumped the LP for the new African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Onanuga on his X handle wrote: “At his event, Obi’s bitterness was evident. What concerned me most were his references to books, professors, and other nations to buttress his belief that he has learnt from the masters and that Nigeria should be entrusted to him because he claims to know the secrets of national development.

“This posturing should be taken with a pinch of salt, coming from a politician who was an abysmal failure in a small state like Anambra, which he governed for 8 years.

“Because Obi sorely lacks the leadership pedigree, beyond being a successful importer, only the madman he consults in Onitsha would be comfortable handing over Nigeria to him.

“However, Obi’s reasoning is flawed. Nations are not identical, and what worked in Indonesia or the USA may not necessarily work in Nigeria.

“No leader can move a country forward by simply copying and pasting models from elsewhere. Nations require original thinkers, not copycats. Homegrown solutions are essential for proper development.

“This is precisely what President Bola Tinubu has been doing since May 29, 2023—a fact that Obi is too consumed by animosity and his small-mindedness to acknowledge.

“In less than three years, the Tinubu administration has restructured the economy, eliminated wasteful petrol subsidies, and reduced its dependence on the oil sector. The administration is focusing on gas development and has attracted both foreign and local investment to the industry.

“Foreign reserves have risen, and the exchange rate has stabilised. Inflation is decelerating. The administration has also embarked on ambitious road projects, such as the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry superhighways, which Obi and his associates consider impossible.

“With tax reforms beginning in January, the Tinubu administration is set to harmonise the historically fragmented tax regime, increase the tax-to-GDP ratio, enhance revenue, and boost prosperity.

“For the past two years and seven months, Tinubu has demonstrated effective leadership anchored in strategic policies and reforms.

Obi is so blind that he cannot see all these achievements, as he jumped from Labour to ADC, where he will play second fiddle and end up being Atiku’s running mate in 2027, like we witnessed in 2019.”

Nigeria will clash with Mozambique for only the sixth time at senior level, as both teams go for each other’s jugular in one of the Round of 16 games of the ongoing 35th Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco.

The 35,000-capacity Complexe Sportif de Fès, which has been home to three-time African champions Nigeria in their entire Group C campaign, will be the venue for the encounter that will commence at 8pm on Monday, 5th January.

Nigeria swept through their group phase campaign like the harmattan, winning all three games while scoring eight goals and conceding four.

Ademola Lookman and Raphael Onyedika have scored twice each, with Semi Ajayi, Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Paul Onuachu supplying the other goals.

Mozambique lost their opening game to Cup holders Cote d’Ivoire, but then dug their feet into the ground to triumph over Gabon, before losing 1-2 to Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions on Wednesday evening.

Monday’s confrontation is expected to be explosive, as the young Mambas have demonstrated capacity to stand toe-to-toe with the big teams and pull something out of the inferno whenever they need to.

Of their five previous confrontations, Nigeria have been victorious on four occasions, including their only AFCON encounter way back in Lubango, Angola in January 2010, in which the Eagles ran away with a 3-0 win.

…Lagos, Ogun govts commend Lagoon Hospital for quality of care, professionalism

Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following the road accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, which claimed the lives of his two close friends, Lateef Ayodele and Sina Ghami.

In a joint statement issued yesterday by the Lagos State and Ogun State governments, both administrations once again commiserated with the families of the deceased, describing the incident as tragic and unfortunate.

The statement, signed by Mr Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lagos State, and Mr Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Ogun State, prayed that The Almighty grant the repose of the souls of the departed and give their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear the painful loss.

According to the statement, Joshua was discharged from hospital late in the afternoon, though heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends. He was deemed clinically fit to recuperate from home.

The statement further disclosed that Anthony Joshua and his mother were at the funeral home in Lagos earlier in the afternoon to pay their final respects to his two departed friends, as preparations were being made for their repatriation scheduled for later in the evening.

Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dapo Abiodun of Lagos and Ogun states, respectively, expressed deep appreciation for the public concern and the show of love and affection received following the incident.

They also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the fatherly support he provided throughout the process.

Furthermore, they extended appreciation to the team of doctors and medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi who attended to Anthony Joshua and others who sustained injuries, noting that the quality of care and professionalism were truly commendable.
