The Federal Government (FG) has announced plans for a low-key celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day anniversary, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, disclosed on Monday at the Pre-Independence World Press Conference in Abuja.

Theme and Planned Activities

According to Idris, activities will be simple.

“Activities will be low-key. We started with the Jummat Prayers on Friday and the Thanksgiving Service on Sunday,” he said.

Other planned events include the unveiling of the National Value Charter by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the National Students’ Debate, which will provide a platform for young Nigerians to engage in national issues.

“The National Value Charter as championed by National Orientation Agency (NOA) will also be unveiled. The National Students’ debate is also another activity that will hold to mark the 65th independence anniversary celebration,” he added.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “All Hands on Deck.”

National Value Charter: Promoting Citizenship and Unity

The National Value Charter is a framework aimed at cultivating national pride and fostering responsible citizenship.

It is divided into two sections: the “Nigerian Promise”, outlining government commitments to values such as equality, democracy, entrepreneurship, peace, inclusivity, freedom, and meritocracy, and the “Citizens’ Commitment” detailing individual responsibilities including discipline, accountability, leadership, tolerance, environmental awareness, and resilience.

NOA’s campaign will promote these principles through sensitisation drives, collaboration with community stakeholders, and digital platforms to build a more unified and value-driven society.
