Court restrains Nigerian Police from enforcing tinted glass permit policy

The Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, has ordered the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to suspend the enforcement of the tinted glass permit for vehicle owners across the country.

The interim order came on Friday as the court opened hearing in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025, filed by legal practitioner John Aikpokpo-Martins against the IGP and the Police Force.

The lawyer approached the court to challenge the legality of the newly reintroduced tinted glass permit enforcement.

In its ruling, the court directed the Police authorities to maintain the status quo and “respect judicial processes pending further proceedings in the matter.” Senior Advocate Kunle Edun, SAN, who led the petitioner’s legal team, confirmed the development, describing it as a major step towards upholding the rule of law.

This ruling follows months of public backlash after the Police resumed the issuance of tinted glass permits nationwide in April through the Police Specialised Services Automation Project.

The policy had been suspended since 2022 but was revived earlier this year, sparking concerns about harassment, extortion, and unfair treatment of motorists.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun had initially set an August 12 deadline for vehicle owners to obtain the permit, later extending it to October 2.

For now, the order means the Police must pause all enforcement activities related to the tinted glass permit until the case is fully determined.
