Google now allows university students in Nigeria to access its premium AI Pro plan for free over the next 12 months. This promotion, which began this week, is available to eligible students over the age of 18. It offers access to advanced AI tools designed to enhance learning, research, and creativity.
With an AI Pro subscription, students can utilise Deep Research for their academic assignments, use Veo 3 to create short video projects, and access Guided Learning for personalised assistance on challenging subjects.
The aim is to include AI as an active study companion in schools and labs all over the country so that students can learn better and work more intelligently. By doing so, routine scholastic activities like research on complex topics, summarising large quantities of information, or preparing visual presentations are now possible within shorter durations and more accurately.
The use of the tools as a combined package is aimed at reducing workload and allowing students to focus on mastering concepts rather than memorisation. This project is part of Google’s bigger scheme to enhance digital literacy in the continent of Africa and prepare future generations with skills relevant to the global trend towards AI-enabled jobs.

Just a few weeks ago, Google introduced Gemini AI Plus to Nigerian subscribers for $5 per month (approximately ₦7,450). This package included access to programs like Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, and 200GB of storage. Today, by offering this access for free to students, Google is eliminating one of the biggest obstacles to adopting AI in schools: the cost.
The AI Pro plan provides features that effectively tackle learning and creative challenges. The Deep Research tool enables students to gather and summarise information from various sources in just minutes. Veo 3 allows for the rapid creation of videos from text or images, while Guided Learning offers step-by-step instructions on difficult topics. Together, these tools make learning engaging and streamline the research process.

How to activate the Google free AI plan
In order to activate the 12-month free AI Pro, eligible students in higher institutions of learning can visit gemini.google/students and validate their academic qualifications. Validation can be done through a student’s email address or validation from university systems. Once validated, the tools are accessible to users immediately, and the investigation process starts.
The sign-up window will remain open from October 7 to December 9, 2025, when new sign-ups will be discontinued. This is in addition to Google’s prolonged efforts to help Africa rise digitally through programs such as Digital Skills for Africa and the Google for Startups Accelerator, both aimed at equipping youth with the requisite tech competencies.
