The Federal Ministry of Education has reaffirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory for all students registering for their O’Level examinations, despite recent changes to tertiary admission requirements.
In a statement, Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, emphasized that the updated admission rules do not exempt any student from taking these two core subjects.
Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, Honourable Minister of Education, explained that the reforms aim to create a fairer, more flexible, and inclusive system for higher education admissions in Nigeria.
“This adjustment ensures that talented students are not barred from accessing tertiary education simply because they do not have credits in subjects unrelated to their chosen courses,” Dr. Alausa said.

Earlier, the Ministry announced that students specializing in arts and humanities would no longer need a credit pass in Mathematics for admission into universities and polytechnics.
However, all students must still register for and sit for both English and Mathematics in their Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE).
The Ministry highlighted that these subjects are essential for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning. Completing them ensures students are adequately prepared for academic progression and future opportunities.
To avoid misinformation, students, parents, and stakeholders are urged to rely only on official Ministry communications.
The clarification underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive education, equitable access, and human capital development, ensuring academic quality is maintained while giving all deserving students the opportunity to succeed.
