  • Aloy Ejimakor, lawyer to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, was teargassed by police during a peaceful protest in Abuja on Monday.
  • The demonstrators had gathered for the #MNKOct20 rally to demand Kanu’s release.
  • Ejimakor said the teargas caused irritation to his eyes and throat, describing the crowd as “mammoth” before police dispersed them.

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has raised alarm after being teargassed by police officers during a peaceful protest in Abuja on Monday.

Ejimakor, who joined other demonstrators calling for Kanu’s release, said the police fired teargas to disperse the large crowd gathered in front of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel for the #MNKOct20 rally.

According to him, the incident caused severe irritation to his eyes and throat.

He wrote on X, “I’m in front of Transcorp Hilton with a mammoth crowd that gathered for #MNKOct20 and the police just exploded teargas. My eyes and throat hurt. They’re scattering everywhere.”

The protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, was organised to demand compliance with previous court orders directing the Federal Government to release Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021.

The incident has sparked outrage among supporters, who described the police action as another attempt to silence peaceful advocacy for Kanu’s freedom.
