  • The Federal Government plans to implement stricter regulations for TikTok and other social media platforms.
  • The focus of these regulations is to promote educational and skill-building content.
  • The initiative aims to redirect the creativity of young users towards more productive digital activities.

The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce stricter regulations for TikTok and other social media platforms, stating that these spaces should encourage more educational and skill-building content.

Government representatives explained that the goal is to channel the creativity of young people toward productive digital activities, rather than the entertainment-heavy content currently popular on the platform.

The proposal has sparked intense discussions nationwide, with many Nigerians questioning the government’s priorities in the face of rising unemployment and economic hardship.

The announcement was met with mixed reactions online. Critics argued that the government should focus on creating job opportunities and improving living conditions instead of policing how young people express themselves online.

One social media user commented, “Here we go again. Instead of solving economic issues, they want to regulate TikTok.” Another added, “Empower youths with real skills offline before controlling their online content.”

Some users also expressed concern that content creators may feel pressured to change their style just to meet government expectations.

“Next thing, comedians will start teaching carpentry just to stay online,” one user joked, prompting humorous responses.

While many viewed the move as unnecessary interference, others supported the idea, saying TikTok has become overcrowded with trivial content. One commenter said, “It’s a good step. TikTok has become a place where everyone begs; you barely see quality content now.”

However, some users pointed out that entertainment-based content often drives the most engagement and income for creators.

“Educational content rarely goes viral,” one person noted.

Despite differing opinions, many agreed that TikTok continues to play a major role in the lives of Nigerian youths, serving as a platform for livelihood, creativity, and self-expression.
