California Gov. Gavin Newsom was an unexpected guest at one reality TV couple’s wedding.
The Ultimatum: Queer Love stars Haley Drexler and Pilar Dizon were about to take a photo with their photographer outside San Francisco City Hall on Thursday, Oct. 23, when they caught sight of Newsom, 58, leaving the building, according to ABC7.
“And then I turned around and that’s when I saw him, and I just started freaking out. I was like, ‘No way, we’re walking in while he’s walking out,’” Dizon told the outlet.
They then shouted out “Daddy Newsom,” and the California politician headed over to congratulate the newlyweds and took a photo with them.
“The epitome of serendipity,” Dizon said. In the moment, Dizon thanked him for his support of the LGBTQ community, “Thank you for all you do for us.”

Newsom has been a longtime supporter of same-sex marriage, and Drexler referenced his work in 2004 in their interview. When Newsom was elected as mayor of San Francisco, he ordered the city to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and, as a result, resisted the federal ban that still existed. He also married several couples at San Francisco City Hall at the time.
“He had a demonstrated history of protecting us,” Drexler said. “To see him in that specific moment, I feel like it was just such a special moment for us that we’ll never forget.”
“The queer Ultimatum girls meeting Governor Newsom on their wedding day is the most San Francisco thing I’ve ever seen,” Dizon added. “I thought that was really sweet. And the thing was just so San Francisco and queer coded.”
The newly married reality stars met as students at UC Davis in June 2012. Thirteen years later, they appeared on season 2 of The Ultimatum: Queer Love, which follows a group of women and non-binary people in relationships in which one person wants to get married and the other does not. After issuing an ultimatum, the six couples date around, enter a trial marriage, and put everything on the line in hopes of finding clarity about how to move forward.
At the start of the show, Drexler wanted to join the show to test her 10-year relationship with Dizon. They faced their own hiccups, with Dizon facing the conundrum of not only choosing Drexler but also being forced to choose between Bridget Matloff and Kyle Neal for the trial marriage.

Dizon revealed on the show that her family “openly disapproves of her queer identity and relationship.” But Drexler was eager to take their relationship to a new level, saying, “We have always been firmly planted next to one another, and I want an even deeper commitment.”
As the season came to an end, Dizon was the one to pop the question, and they announced their engagement after the July episode aired.
